Hey guys,
I really like the pie controls for the larger screen and I would like to keep using them. The problem is that I'm still quite slow using them and now I'm wondering how quickly you permanent users got used to them.
Thanks in advance

It's really fun now with the Pie Controls.... It took me not even a day to get used to it... I'm on it all the time.. Need to turn it off when I'm handing over my N4 to someone else.. and when I'm using the Pie Controls everybody around is like :cyclops::cyclops::good::good:
You'll get used to it very soon... and then stay on it forever..... :good:

pratice makes perfect, still learning myself. I'd suggest try using pie for the tasks/things u do most and turn em off for what you do the least on your Nexus.
Do you guys now how to add the cool clock when the pie shown up? In the pie pro control setting there's an option to add click but it's different (very lame clock) please help me..

I've tried pie on plenty of roms and can't seem to get used to it. Its so damn pretty though.....but It's easier from a functionality standpoint (for me) to decrease the size of my nav bar and make it semi translucent(i do the same with my status bar). I do this because It annoys me to no end when I can't trigger pie and I need to do something, like, right at that moment
I've attached a pic of my home screen so you can see what it looks like. It's pretty close to pie....you can achieve that pie full screen without using pie, just play with your interface settings(nav bar, status bar, I forgot to add that I use a hidden status bar) and get a decent launcher if your Rom doesn't support these tweaks. I use nova prime, I don't think I could live without it lol. If you have any questions on my setup just let me know.

I really don't like pie tbh. It just seems like a novelty to me, and using the navbar will always be quicker imo. That being said, I do like the fact that you can gain more screen real estate with pie by disabling the navbar and using pie for control, and it looks awesome when it is engaged. I guess its all down to personal preference. If pie works for you than use it. :good:
At first I didn't like pie, thought it was too slow and stuff. I test the waters for a week by enabling it by putting nav bar to 0%. Now I'm so used to it im faster with pie than normal navi bar. Its funny cause when I use an iphone or another android i try to enable the pie but its not there. There is one thing that does annoy me. While my screen is locked, pie does not come out
After using them for a day they already feel much more familiar so I think I will stick to them

Apparently it's going. I will really miss it. I don't think there is any need for two thick black bars on a 7 inch device. I like having the extra space and I like the aesthetics of the tablet UI, especially with a reduced nav bar. I don't know why they are removing tablet UI and if the devs can do anything about it. I hope they can! Will you miss it too or is it just me?
Edit: Turns out it's just a rumour, phew!
Most will miss the 10" tablet UI but honestly, I don't expect that I will. The centered buttons are not that big a deal and the "Odd" way the Nexus 7's notification system lurks around, unobtrusive enough that I probably won't care.
I will be more interested in things like Miracast support and web browsing performance than I will be in the UI changes.

There are a bunch of ROMs with tablet UI actually. I'm using smooth ROM with it and its irreplaceable
I know, I'm on PA, but once the update kicks in the ROMs won't have tablet UI. Correct me if I'm wrong!

I will miss it alot. I do not see why they would get rid of something like that.
Btw where did you see it was removed and are we talking about the 4.2 update?

I thought I would hate it when I first saw it
But honestly, I like it. I was forced to use it for the first month before I rooted my n7, and I got used to it. Then I installed a tabui ROM and imo it doesn't work properly on a 7 inch screen. I know a lot will disagree but I am just sayin
I use the normal phone ui now, its just more consistent and easier to use for me. If I want more screen space, I will remove the bars with 'expand desktop' on the ROMs I use

things i hate about standard nexus 7 UI
no quick access to brightness. in tablet UI i can quickly tap the time in lower left hand corner and adjust brightness on the fly.. cant do that with nexus 7 UI
i hate how i dont get Tablet APPs and instead get the phone app for youtube gmail etc..
those are the only things that make me to to tablet ui..
if i could have quick access to Brightness AND native tablet youtube and gmail apps in the standard nexus 7 UI then id be fine.
i really do love the expanded youtube app in tablet UI 4 nice rows in portrait mode compared to phone youtube app. yuck.
Yea the tablet mode is supreme. If it doesn't "work" right then it isn't implemented right. EOS has it so stupidly simple that it is a godsend. You can enable/disable it on the fly and it doesn't screw with your other apps. Just combines the bars into 1.
The notification pulldown menu on the stock UI is horrible. Needs fullscreen or something. Looks tacked on like an afterthought.
I will be disappointed once 4.2 hits and it goes away. Remember tablet UI has to be present to unlock it. Google may remove it completely to streamline their OSs.

It's all over the place in the ROMs threads but there is a discussion kinda starting here in the PA thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33692765 . Reading this again there seems to be some uncertainty about it. So that's something I guess...

I have it, it is very nice, not too many features yet, and it has a very noticeable lag time. Otherwise it looks great and has good ideas, just not implemented to the top standards yet.

I haven't noticed any lag with it And I agree it looks great and has great ideas, but it's just lacking in features. The way I use my phone tho, the missing features don't bother me.
It's a launcher developed by Chris Lacy. He does good work. I use his twitter app, tweet lanes. It's one of the better twitter clients imho. He's very responsive to user feedback. This launcher is in its infancy so it'll get better

$4 is the going rate. It's the same price as apex and Nova even when they were brand new. It's very nice because it's actually different than the standard android launchers besides obviously the $10-17 ones.

I'm using this one since today on my Xperia Play ( My N4 hasn't arrived yet.. Germany - 'preordered' ****up )
And it runs smoothly even on this old device.
What stopped me from using it is the app drawer in the top left. It'd be a nuisance for me to reach all the way up there every time I needed to access the drawer o_0

Nova and Apex are free, there are paid versions which you can unlock certain features. Completely different to Action Launcher which doesn't offer a free/trial version.
At least with Nova/Apex you can see how it runs on your device over a day or two compared to Action Launcher which you basically have 15 minutes to trial it and if you don't like it you only have 15 minutes to request a refund.

I was concerned about this too - I think you can open the app drawer with the home button, but some apps you want will still be at the top of the list. Infact, if you use the A-Z most will be at the top.
Does anyone know if there is a way around this (e.g, when you press the letter they are offset from the top by a couple of apps)?
I will certainly keep an eye on this, I was quite impressed with the frequent updates for tweetlanes.
The app drawer isn't really on the top left, you can press the home button and it will open, and you can also just swipe right when you are on your "left most" home screen.
I use this on my Nexus 7, and I think its great, good to see something different and not horrifically overpriced!
For me, all it needs is a landscape option, I wouldn't really use landscape on my N4, but I would use it quite a bit on my N7!

Hey there,
I'm used to pull down the notification bar from any possible app (even games) on the sgs3.
I noticed it isn't possible on the nexus... Is there any mod or something for that? :/
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
its sdk functionality. if an app requests the statusbar should be hidden the framework has to do that in order to not get in the way of gestures and swipes on which the app relies. if touchwizz ignores that it would be a pretty evil abuse, something that should get them in legal trouble. i dont think it would be hard to realize but i know of no mod or rom who's got that.
Oh I see thank you very much for the explanation.
I got pretty used to it as it was really convenient checking my notification bar without minimizing my current app. (Change music, brightness , GPS etc....)
Oh well will have to get used to it then.
Thanks for the reply again

For the time being you could use this app:

I'm not sure what ROM you're using, but normally PIE controls work at the bottom of the screen only when the nav bar is hidden in extended desktop mode.
Paranoid android 3.97 and I know I have full screen enabled but the pie won't show up with the normal swipe up from the bottom, nor can I use the stock navigation bar when not in full screen,

Had the same thing happening on my mothers N4. Been searching and it seems to be a hardware issue. Something got screwed up over time in the digitizer on a lot of N4's lately, and switching ROMs, wiping and so on doesn't work.
Sorry, bro.
Hi everyone!
A couple of months ago my mother bought a Nexus 5 because she really disliked that she wasn't able to change anything to her then current mobile phone other than the background: she had an iPhone. Now she's been getting used to the whole Android ecosystem and the look and feels, however, certain simple tasks are still difficult for her. What I then noticed was that none of the official Google apps (camera, gmail and settings f.e.) had the same management. The buttons aren't in the same places and therefore you have to learn what to do per app. There is just no consistency.
That's the reason why I made these mock-up/concepts. Simple and easy to understand. Easy to get from one place to the other. Also, apps which are really close to one-another, like the contacts app with the phone and messages app, are connected via the tab-pullout.

Feedback is welcome. Please keep in mind that this was just something I decided to do in my spare time and I thought would be fun to show you guys. Also, I am sorry certain texts are in Dutch, I made screenshots from my phone and didn't bother to change them .
EDIT 31-5-2014:
I've been thinking about how I could improve my last concept/mock-up and now I've come up with this idea.
It is a combination between the new looks of the Google Keep-app, Facebook-app and the camera app.
Now all navigation is in the bar on top, including the "sub-navigation". All the actions are in the lower bar, which looks just like the bar in the camera-app. I don't know what would be best: to make the actions disappear like the three-dot menu in the camera-app or like the actions in the facebook-app: disappear when scrolling.
Also, with apps like the music-app or youtube-app which have a thumbnail, they can take up some space on the action bar.
If there is not enough room for the actions, the action bar would be scrolable.
If a message or anything is selected, an action bar will pop-up below that message.
The action bar is in the bottom because it is easier to touch with your thumb on big phones (and maybe with some smaller phones as well).
I've put all the navigation stuff together and i've put all the actions together so it is more clear for newcomers and also so you immediately know where to go to instead of searching for what you want.
