[Q] Streaming Apps that require WiFi - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So the other day I was planning on using the Xfinity Player app lo and behold I forgot I can't stream unless I'm on Wi-Fi. Is there any way to make the app stream even if I'm not on WiFi and just use data? Not sure if there is already a question like this posted but I tried looking some up but no posts were found. I know its possible in some form of way since there are tweaks on iOS for facetime while using 3g even though you technically need Wi-Fi.

Best free music streamer?

Can anyone recommend a good free music streaming solution for the Desire Z? (i.e. to stream music from a PC server). I currently use Squeezebox Server, but I don't think there's a streaming solution for it so I'm looking for an alternative.
are you looking to do this over wifi or via 3G too?
Just wifi would be fine
you could try vlc stream and convert however the free version does not allow playlists. i dont think many free ones do to be honest.
have you used audiogalaxy? free & amazing.
here's the app download, but you need to get it configured on the PC side before installing the app if I remember right.
I stream in "high quality" mode via wwan or wlan without issue several hours a day.
Ive been using Amazon Cloud drive. Got 20 GB of storage.

how is that working? I've heard that there have been some streaming issues over mobile networks with it - is it functioning as it should for you?

YouTube slow?

Is it just me, or is the YouTube app really slow to load videos? And when I skip ahead or go back, it just refuses to go, even after twenty minutes of "loading".
I went to go to the play store to give a comment that is was being slow, and then I realized it said the app wasn't compatible, and the YouTube app we have isn't the same as the one from the play store.

I have this same issue. Youtube app is so slow in loading videos that it is unusable on my Nexus 7. Using Youtube via browser is a bit better but still way too slow. Does anyone know what might be causing this?
Btw, what do you mean by different app? I think nexus7 yt app is certainly the same app as the one on Play store..
Not for me. Videos start streaming nearly instantly on the YouTube app. I jut tried a random HD video. It started in ~one second. I tried changing the location slider and it responded fluidly.
In fact, this is one of the things I like a lot about the nexus 7.
I have noticed that while Netflix is very responsive its try difficult to get the position slider to nudge just a little forward or back.
Stock, rooted.

That is strange because for me, it just keeps "loading" forever when I try to watch a video (the menus and search etc. still work nice and fast in the Youtube app).
Maybe I should do a factory reset to see if that fixes this issue. My Nexus is stock, unrooted. I love the way this tablet handles but this issue is driving me crazy..

I've noticed youtube videos take a while to start but once they've started there's no buffering issues and skipping to different parts works fine,
It seems Nexus 7 doesn’t like my internet connection / wlan router (Cisco epc3825).
When using 3G connection (using my Galaxy Nexus as wlan access point), Youtube works fine. But with my 40mbps cable connection, it’s a no go.
This sucks, especially since my 1st gen iPad works fine using the same connection. I guess there is no workaround other than to buy a new wlan router - anyone know of one that would work well with Nexus7?

EDIT: I switched to Zyxel router and everything works fine again.
Guys, i had the same problem and i just went into play store and deleted the last update.... There are a bunch of bad reviews for the latest update... Give it a try, it might work for ya as well ^-^
I tested with the stock rom and it loads fast. With custom roms it loads slow. Check it out.....

Plex on the Nexus 7?

I have been looking for some apps that can stream outside of my home network. Plex looks pretty good since it categorizes your videos pretty well, gives good descriptions and movie art. I was wondering has anyone tried this on the Nexus 7? If so how was it? Did it work with a variety of formats? Did it work well outside of your home network? Like streaming on another WiFi network or through tethering (Bluetooth or WiFi).

(?) [Live cable TV] app

Do anyone know any good apps for streaming live cable TV?

Time Warner's is OK
The only streaming cable app I've tried so far is Time Warner Cable's app. Of course, I think it will only work if you're already a cable subscriber. Most channels are available to stream, plus some channels that are streaming only and aren't even available on the cable service. We have a pretty fast wifi here, so the video/sound quality is great on the streams. Biggest drawback is, you can only stream to your device while on your home wifi network...nowhere else. If you're trying to use it at work, you're S.O.L.
Also of note: I had rooted my Nexus, but found that the TWC app won't let you stream on a rooted device (or with USB debugging enabled). I don't know if that's the same with other cable streaming apps, but it's something to keep in mind. I ended up un-rooting my Nexus so I could use the TWC streaming (and Google Wallet, as it also will not work on a rooted or unlocked device). Sorry I can't point you to any better options as this is all I've tried so far.
Yeah, i need one for the road.

Just wondering if anyone has thought to set up a home VPN and tried the app? I don't have time warner but in theory it should work.

[Q] [FIX] Reduce Buffering in YouTube Streaming

Will this reduce buffering on the Nexus 4? I constantly have to wait for YouTube to buffer, even on fast WiFi connections. I found this in the GalaxyNote 10.1 forum. A couple posts through someone mentions using init.d to utilize. Will it work for us?

Of course all credit goes to kcrudup, I just found the thread.

Thats whats i get!!
I'll give it a go in the morning after i've changed roms and let you know. Hope it does though :good:
well I youtube a lot and get massive buffering whenever I turn on HD, it's a total pain knowing that nexus 4 is one of the few phones with HD youtube yet it buffers so much it's actually unusable.
hope this'll help.
It didn't really make any difference for me
precisely why I use tubemate, just download video and go

I got the same issue and found out that the nexus 4 has ****ty wifi drivers.
Having my phone 1 feet away from the router yields me 2-3Mb/s download speeds. My internet connection is 50Mb/s.
2Mb/s is probably not enough for smooth YouTube HD playback.
Did the same test with my Nexus 10, I max out my Internet connection (47Mb/s) and of course, YouTube plays HD vids flawlessly.
Get the speedtest app and do some testing. I bet you have the same problem.
I believe not everyone has this issue and it comes up to what router and what router settings you use.
