So the Galaxy Nexus released in Canada today and I went to a local store to play with a live demo. Now am I just spoiled from using the I9100 (I imported one right when it was released), because although the Nexus felt generally smooth, my S2 feels so much faster in most aspects. I thoroughly played with it for 30 minutes and tested as many functions as I could.
This is disappointing because I felt Ice Cream and graphics acceleration would make this thing fly, even though the internals are inferior to the S2.
Now the reason I bring this up, is that from some perusing through these threads here, the Note is generally claimed to be slower than the S2 (as it has more pixels to push). I guess my S2 has spoiled me since anything else I use now feels sluggish, except of course for when I play with my buddy's iPhone 4S. So, my question to those coming from the S2 to a Note, how much slower is it and does it take a while to get used to it? Extra bonus points for those who have played with all three devices and can possibly rank them from fastest to slowest.
It just sucks that we don't have the Note in Canada so I can't really test the speed difference for myself
sgs2 has had tons of updates and development. Galaxy Note is a brand new device and have little development right now. It will speed up and with the great supercurio coming aboard we should see some new improvements. Give it a little tim e.
Even though I had a defective unit, it was just a fast as my sgs2. I really didnt experience any real lag until I tried go launcher.
Im coming from the sg1 to sg2 and now the note.
The sg2 blows the sgs out of the water and in my experiance is a fair bit smoother then the note. I use launcher pro and have a few widgets on screen, using the same widget setup as my gs2 its a bit slower.
But ive got more icons on screen on the note so it does test the sysyem a bit more, its noticably a little laggy in comparison. You have such a big hi res screen your bound to put more stuff on it.
Im sure if i set the screen for the same icon grid and made an exact comparison it would perform similar to the gs2.

After updating to the XXKK9 firmware the Gnote is much faster compared to the S2, everything else is better on the Gnote.
Opening apps is much quicker then the s2 the only slight lag I get is flicking between home screens. Doesn't bother me, I prefer having more stuff accessible to sacrifice a little UI smoothness.
I have the same XXKK9 firmware which i got via an ota update the day i powered my phone up first time. Its still all stock only been a couple our days for me.

Thanks for the input, everyone. Just a little nervous to drop $700+ on a device only to have it underperform to my expectations. First thing I will do is load KK9 then. The Note seems like the perfect device since it's basically a beefed up S2 which is my fav device of all-time, with a huge screen (something I've been looking for) and a stylus (so I can keep my gloves on through these harsh Canadian winters). Very excited, going to order it now!
I still feel Note is slightly slow than S2 while page flicking and scrolling (huge list like 700 contacts). My region hasn't upgraded to 2.3.6 and maybe it will go away. The satisfaction you get from large screen outweighs that minor hiccup.
My Note is still on KK1 (Kies reports this is the latest firmware available for my version of the phone). I first set up my Note just like my S2, with a lot of Widgetsoid widgets. The extra screen space provided space for like 45 widgets. It was laggy. I ditched all but about 5-6 Widgetsoid widgets (the larger screen allows enough Touchwiz icons for my purposes), and I stopped experiencing any lag. Subjectively, though, the S2 somehow seems a bit more responsive, even overly responsive because the screen is set to a more sensitive setting. But when I look at it objectively, I think there's no difference in lag between my S2 and my Note, now that I have a sane home screen.
A couple of the widgets I had been using have just been updated used with launcher pro now my note is running as smooth a the gs2.
I think with newer firmware and a bit of time for apps to update so they run better on high resolution screens this thing will be awesome.
The hardware is there it just needs the software to back it up and not hold it back.

Loved the SGS2, had it ages, thought I would try the dreaded FruityPhone, lasted about a week, now getting a NOTE end of today...
What will I notice between the SGS 2 and the NOTE, I'm hoping for the usability of the SGS2, the screen resolution of the Iphone 4S
I have all three of the phones you mentioned. To see which one I use 99.9% of the time please see my signature.

The screen on the note is awesome. Once you spend a day with it you'll never want another phone.
By the way.... an S2 to an Iphone 4s?? why downgrade that much?? lol
I had an sgs2 also and upgraded to the note just because of the screen, its really superb.
Overall the note is an sgs2 on steroids imo, bigger stronger faster + the S-pen apps are not bad at all.
Biggest difference you'll find is screen size. Had the sgs2 and loved it, especially in white:-D I saw the Note and had to have it. Once you're used to the size of it, you'll wonder how you actually used the sgs2. The 4s, well, my ipod touch has the same screen size and man is it small! Enjoy your Note. I am;-)

Right had my NOTE a few days now...
First thing the Screen is absolutely superb, GPS fixes faster and more accurately than my SGS2 ever did, the sound quality seems better and you do start to get used to the size...Battery life seems pretty good but then so it should with a 2500 battery inside.
But if feels sluggish compared to my SGS2 on a standard GB rom, almost feel like its in slow motion, sometimes even laggy, tried lets golf 3 from the market, on my old SGS2 is was slick smooth and frame rate was a joy, on the Note its a little jerky and laggy, the S-Pen is superb, but seems ever so slightly off calibration, I cant find any way to calibrate it in the system settings, thinking about Rooting and flashing some custom roms or even the ICS that's not ready kia Kies yet, but it all seems amazingly more complex than the SGS2 ever did...

If I remember correctly, there is a way to help with the pen....Someone else can confirm if I'm right, but I think in Pen settings change from left dominant to right dominant and then back again(to whichever your preference is) it should help with the S-pen calibration...
What a blooming donut i am, when i first got the note i installed spare parts. Something i always used to do on the sgs2, to speed up the transitions etc...but i must have set it to very slow by accident, no wonder things seemed slow and ponderous...tried the setting for the pen left to right handed, seems slightly better thanks for that, let's golf is still a little slow, but all games simply look stunning on this screen

Well what happened yesterday wasn't planned but I was out shopping with my wife, and I happened to see that the Carphonewarehouse had a white Samsung Galaxy S3 on show. Both my wife and I agreed the S3 was gorgeous to look at. And then I succumbed and bought one sim free. CPW also bought my Note which was a surprise. They also had a range of cases, so I bought one and a Zagg Invisible Shield screen protector which they fitted and guaranteed for 25 years. A good deal and service.
Below are some early opinions vs the Note -
1. The S3 feels more like a phone. Being honest it is far more manageable to use. It is incredibly thin and light and looks amazing.
2. Speed. This things flies compared to the Note. It reads the media on my SD card like a bullet.
3. Touchwiz. The version on here is much better. Then again every piece of software is far more advanced than the Note. Sorry to say this, but Samsung have clearly gone overboard with the S3. Example. The lock screen displays 4 apps for quick launching, weather, and news ticker if you want. Also, can use motion control on the lock screen to launch camera from lock screen. Volume hard keys adjusts ringtone volume, but also has a settings icon. Tap this and then the 3 volumes are available to adjust. In fact as you explore all the software and options there are improvements everywhere.
4. Camera. Rips the Note apart. There is no contest. The S3 is the best camera. It is better than the iPhone 4S too. The quality of the shots is amazing.
5. Audio. Use a wolfram DAC. Therefore after listening to some music, can confirm sound quality is superb.
6. The S3 has a front notification light. Very useful.
As this wasn't planned as such, I have many cases all good ones available. Plus a spare battery and the Samsung battery charger/stand. I will make a list so if anyone wants them, just make me an offer.
If anyone want to know anything specific ask away.

2. After you launched the Calculator, how is the lag when switching between

I got mine yesterday too. Not had it long enough to comment on battery life, but it seems to be really good. Tried draining it so I could do a full charge cycle on it. But I gave up after two hours, it was just taking too long to drain the battery.

I assume you're referring to the main camera. What about the front camera? That's one thing that drives me crazy about the Note -- poor front camera quality compared to the iPhone 4.
I think I'm going to buy it as my 3rd handphone
My main would be Note, 2nd iPhone 4s (company gave me one as part of my job scope).

I certainly don't want to trade my Note, at least until the Note 10.1 is out but was curious so valued my phone on their website. It offered £205.
The reason I got the note was very simply the bigger the screen you have the better the experience where it counts - web browsing, games, movies.
Therefore personally there is no way the S3 can compete with the note, all of the things you mention are nice to have compared to the must have of the much larger screen.
I suspect from your comments about size and handling you probably weren't suited for the Note, not being funny but it seriously isn't for everyone

Always best to write a review on a phone after using it for a good week or so, using it as much as possible, i'm sure once its been on XDA for a while it will have as many issues as the next phone.
I tried one for 10 mins in the phone shop. So can only comment on very instant issues.
First thoughts too much like the ONE X, too small now I have used the NOTE, would miss the S-PEN,
nice phone it will sell similar to the S2 I'm sure, I guarantee buy one now at full price your loose way over a £100 by this time next month, wait a month until Samsung leak another super phone they going to release and the price will have dropped.
but that's me being a cynical ole tosser

Are you sure it takes four seconds to do that flip? Mine (running on stock LPF) almost flip instantly.
Answering all your questions.
The calculator switch is fast like under a sec. Yes I got about £200 but I only gave them the handset. I still have the headphones and charger. eBay would fetch £300 but after ebay takes it fees I would be left with £250 approx. I was happy to take the hit to avoid the hassle and have an instant solution.
I had told my friends that I would keep the Note for at least 2 years. But after seeing and actually holding the Note I was blown away. It is so good looking and it's light thin profile is far more manageable. So yes, from a size point of view I can agree the Note was not for me, even though I had been happy with its size.
However, remember the S3 is only half and inch less screen. Doesn't make a massive difference, but the Note still has the edge.
The link to the comparisons are inaccurate. The S3 has wolfram DAC for audio. There is no contest in that the S3 sounds better. There is a thread in the S3 section all about this.
Camera. The quality of the camera is better. I have taken several photos yesterday. The S3 HDR mode is better than the HDR mode on the iPhone 4S.
Some of the features I like are ICS based but it's the combined effort that makes this phones so good. I have read the comments on the S3 threads, words like epic performance appear, and these are from Note users.
Don't get me wrong, the Note is still a unique product. It's also old now so a new released device should in theory always be better.
I don't regret owning the Note. It caused many conversations with people, like what is that. Any I enjoyed it.
The battery life is epic. Waiting still for it to run flat. It was at 60% out of the box yesterday at around 1pm. It's 40% next day at 7.50am and I have been tweaking it a lot.

This is exactly what I'm afraid of I'm getting too used to the big screen, S-Pen, and larger keyboard. If I were to get the S3 in a few months down the line the Note 2 had everything S3 has including that Wolfson DAC I would've wasted my money on the S3. So while the urge to get the latest and greatest tugs at me, I will have to put it off until more information is released on the possible Note 2.
The Wolfson DAC is really the only thing that would make me jump early. Everything else I could live without for now.

Just under a second for my Note, running ICS LPY.
Are you comparing the S3 to the note with Gingerbread or Ice Cream Sandwich?
Most of your comments seem software based - and all my speed/software issues with the Note seemed to be solved with ICS (apart from the bugs!).
I wouldn't touch Touchwiz after using the alternative launchers and only use the camera for happy snaps (The DSLR comes out for anything serious!). And now too used to my stylus!
Would love the notification light tho!
Advice from current S4 Owners Required!
One month before launch of S4 i sold my One X to buy S4 when it comes in market. When it finally came out, it had known issues of
>Screan Smearing/Pink tint
>Over Heating & Battery Drain
>Lags, Lags and Lags as compared to iPhone specially.
So i skipped S4 at launched and for the first i decided to try iPhone in my life, after 10 or so Android Phones!
NOW I WANT TO ASK FROM CURRENT S4 USERS, IF THIS PHONE IS STABLE ENOUGH AND FREE FROM ABOVE ISSUES FOR ME TO BUY IT NOW, OR SHOULD I WAIT S4 WITH GOOGLE AS I HATE TOUCHWIZ AND STOCK MAY BE LITE WEIGHT OR EVEN WAIT FOR NEXUS 5?
I like smoothness of iPhone, almost all softwares like, Viber, Skype, Facebook or more smooth and beautiful on iPhone than any android i ever used, they usually stutter on Android, my problem with iPhone at times is small screen, at times i feel smaller screen is blessing to carry phone around easily in pockets.
Sharing limitations of iPhone was taken care with Dropbox as i can share songs and videos with any phone via dropbox, at times i think of absolute sharing like in any Android Phone?
I have budget now a days to sale my brand new iPhone and add money and try S4 now? but on net too much confusion, thats why i ask users to give me there say.
Thanks in advance in case if you give me piece of your precious time here and give me your thoughts.
Kind Regards!
I have s4 its good in every aspect except the heating problem
If u play any game which requires a good level of ram than it gets heated up like an oven
U cant even put it on your ear after playing games

Feels like downgrade
I had a Galaxy Note II before S4 I9500, and to be frank, it feels like a downgrade. No amount of tweaking seems to improve the lag, overheats like crazy and battery life, especially when compared to GN II, is much worse. Screen is good, but really, cannot tell the difference with naked eye. The only benefit for me was the size, as GN II's size was starting to get at me.

I don't know if its just me or I'm really a nitpicker. I have an officemate who has a note 2 and I can see the jagged edges of the icons on his screen. I must say the s4 is well worth it for a flagship device. I looked around today with a friend that is looking for his next phone.. we compared my phone to other phones and he's really amazed at my s4. He will get his own s4 next week.
I have the i9505 version.
Personally i didn't notice any overheating. Its same as s3 after 1h playing, just the s3 gets warm on bottom and s4 on top. I have nothing like some said here that phone got so hot that couldn't be touched
I noticed the smearing. Doesn't bother me at all and today was released new update , which is fixing the smearing problem.
LAGS? My s4 stock with all samsung's bloats on, is pretty damn smooth, i just noticed sometimes when closing multiple apps a bit of stutter in animations but nothing major here.
If you are not interested in Note 3 which anyway you will have to wait for, go for the s4. This is my opinion.
I remember when s3 came out with ICS on, was so so laggy and buggy and everything..after updates > jellybean was perfectly smooth.
So i'm sure s4 will get just better and better with every update.
If size isn't an issue, then wait for note 3, it will be a supreme device I feel so.

Well, it means this heating issue is having by majority of people, which means it is genuine issue and its not just playing games, i guess its by doing anything extensive, like chatting hard or surfing etc? So i should try to relax and may be wait how stock S4 pans out? as strangely i am doing with iPhone too, only smaller screen has advantage and disadvantage, at times i feel, both phones do OK, so better stick to iPhone and think about other things in life

My dear, size is not that much of an issue, being a man here, but S4 had to be supreme of them all device as well if you remember, but cartoonish touchwiz is an issue, specially now as touchwiz often connected to lags. Plus with Note my concern is, Gosh we came out of Stylus Era, putting stylus again in phone, causing it to gain weight and size, you can't take notes on screen better then on actual paper i feel.
Yet i hope Sammy may not let you down again here with your expectation with Note 3, as you are saying, next time they will do a better Job!
My own little hope is Stock Android, but again Nexus 4 may be still have over heating less battery issues!

So basically you are saying, Buy it and wait/hopes for updates to fix the problems, like stay on chances, little heating is not that of an issue, but something beyond that is not a pleasant feeling, but as people saying, its uncomfortable at times.
You are breaking news here i guess, that today smearing issue will be rest in peace, though i heard they are solving pink tint issue.
Moral of the story, which is sad, that, some users are having problems more than others, so i am not sure i will fall in which category, as usual!

Its not about hopes, because it will happen and updates will iron out all the issues, they always did it properly for their flagships. It was confirmed that smearing is gone on the newest update, so i guess the rest of the problems will be ironed out soon enough. Its true some has more problems than others, but this happens on all phones, not only samsung ones.
Will see what else is fixed in the new update. Looks like some camera improvements are done also.

I don't paint any rosy picture here, i was very upset last year with the s3 and all the SDS problems and all the rest, but samsung ,,fixed'' it with an update and things got better. It was confirmed by other users that flashed the new ROM that the smearing is gone. I'm not sure about the pink tint as this sound more a hardware problem on AMOLED screens, but if they will fix this somehow...even better. I have very very little pink tint at the bottom on the screen ( barely noticeable ) and this doesn't bother me.

If you want stock android then you can go for stock google version of S4. It won't be directly available in Pakistan I feel so you will have to got for used one.
Regarding stylus, we it i useful as well as gimmek. Its up to you how you want to use it.
Curious to see why all fellow members haven't changed from their SGS3 to a newer phone.
In my case, I still haven't found a phone that is at least 2x superior in every aspect. The SGS3 still has a very good camera, big HD screen, 1080P video recording, lots of storage (48GB in mine), Android 4.3, etc.
I tried the Nexus 5 recently but ended returning it. The vibration and Wi-Fi signal were very weak. They were worse than on my SGS3. Also had the microphone audio problem when recording videos. Screen was great. Camera was worse than my SGS3. The overall tone and colors were darker and pictures were a downgrade. I'm still amazed at the picture quality of my SGS3. It takes great pictures, and I like having the peace of mind of having enough storage to shoot 100 minutes of 1080P video (I do record a LOT of videos using my phone).
Also battery on the Nexus 5 is not such a big improvement. It's better, but I would have preferred to upgrade to 3000 battery and maybe a 13Mpx camera.
Only thing I dislike of my SGS3 is the speed animation and fluidity. Animations are not consistent. I tried turning animations off but don't like it either. I've also tried CM11 and it's good, but still animations are not 100% consistent and quick.
So what about all of you? Why are you still using your SGS3 and haven't upgrade?
I will wait for SGS5 and LG G3.

I've paid 600€ for my s3... And the next time im gonna paid so much money for a smartphone it must be the ultimate high end smartphone.. At the moment there is no Phone i would buy.. Maybe Note 3 But better wait for s5.... And i defenitly stay on Samsung.. Best Displays for.. Hardware is top.. Only the Software could be better.. And if you drop ur smartphone often u gonna like the plastic .. Also Samsung is the Only one Who still bring update for a 2 years old device.. (Google too But dont like their devices.).. So I am Lucky with my s3.. Still Stock Sammy look and firmware... No issues with the Phone even i have an insane Chip..

Because it's still being a very good option comparing it with other phones. I will wait for S5 or a Nexus.....
I'm still locked in my contract until June, also there's nothing that exciting right now.
In June the S5 will probably be out, but I'm reluctant to buy Samsung again with the Knox BS, so I'll see what I can get.
It's a solid device
Like other posters said, the performance gap between an S3 and say a Nexus 5 isn't really enough to justify a new expensive handset. I'll reconsider later in the year when the Nexus 6 is announced.
The replaceable battery and SD card have really made a difference that I didn't expect (I only got the S3 as an insurance replacement for Nexus 4). It would be hard to give them up.
The S3 is still very popular worldwide so there is a solid dev scene - example OmniROM - which means I don't really miss out too much on a Nexus device.
i dont like the direction phones are being designed, everyone is putting HD or UHD screens on phones (read: overkill), faster hardware to match, most getting too big also, battery usually stays the same in terms of how much you can actually use your phone...
would only wish for lil more horsepower on s3 gpu and it would be a perfect phone
S3 could be the successor to the HD2, nearly 5 years old and still being developed.
As many people updating to the S4 find, it's no fun owning one on your own -developer support is everything and the S3 has such a huge user base

No money to afford it

here in brazil phones are very expensive
Because I paid 40k (indian rupees) for it:laugh:
Anyway the device is still pretty solid overall with no major limitations and awesome dev support. I think i will consider upgrading it when Note 4 comes, I will buy the, then cheaper Note 3 :highfive:
No need, still works like a charm. I don't see anything compelling for me to upgrade, I'll be keeping this for a couple more years easily.
Because bought it half year ago lol, with contract. And I won't have money after the contract will end to buy a new phone,so I think I will stay with this one for 2 or maybe even more years.
But S3 is the world's best selling phone. It's popular, huge user base,it has one of the best development support, and S3 is already fast enough in real world performance and even new games,so I don't need a new expensive phone to just do the same I do in my S3 but have A LITTLE smoother animations.
Because I was saving money for vaction and on top of that, the S3 is still a very solid performer. So there was no real need to upgrade. The ROM developments are active, it has Android 4.3, and the screen is still awesome. I will be changing phone this year though, most likely to the S5.
Simply because my SGS3 is so fast with Nova Launcher, it has great battery life, a pretty good camera and every app I want to use works perfectly fine with it. I only upgrade when the apps I want to use do not run or run bad, or when my phone dies of course
I had the SGS1 before this, I really felt the urge of upgrading when the SGS3 came out, but now I never even thought about upgrading.
EDIT:
Also, when 4G gets mainstream (read:affordable) I will probably want to upgrade, but only if there are proper 4G phones that work on practically all 4G bands. That is a feature that might get me to buy a new phone, as you will get real internet which can be used to properly video call and game on the go.
Coming from the s3 lte to a note 3. The difference is huge but not praticle. I love the note 3 but in some ways the s3 lte was just perfect. Had great size, speed and also every app was designed on it.
Like even mc4 is optimized on the s3 but not the note 3. So we don't get the good graphics.
Anyways everyone stay with the s3 till it dies

Ive had mine for 1 and a half year and i see little incentive in changing it. Buying it for almost 65k Pak rupees and now finding the resale is less than 40% of that value, Maybe 25k for one in perfect condition, but going as low as 10k if it has a damaged screen as mine which is absolute rubbish.
Its a legendary phone that started the high end smartphone battle. Its just a pity about the electronic wastage that goes on, in 1 year a device can not only become old and outdated but turn into an antique, a term that used to be used for being decades old. Camera never ceases to amaze, half HD and full HD screens look the same if your not holding it close to your face and focusing on the pixels.
Battery? Smoothness? I can say my s3 feels just as fast if not faster than the s4 and note 3. The great dev support is pushing battery and performance capabilities to never before seen limits. Theme changes make you believe you own a new phone. In the case of the S4/note3 roms, you are convinced you have an S4/note3 as in S4 Revolution or Glamour S4/Note3.
The cool gimmicky but useless features you might ask about? Smart Pause/Smart Scroll have already been ported. The Note 3's air command is hardly hardware related, and could show up in a few months if not less. So we got all and ever more that we need from our S3.
Im proud to have an S3.
Because my work pays for my phones, i get 230 euro a year to get phone for, if i don't buy one i can save the money so the year after have 510 euro to buy a phone for. So i´m saving money right now
I don't see any reason to buy a new phone other than a old gpu in s3, but i'm sure it'll run fine for next 1 year
To be honest, custom samsung roms 4.3 made me not want to change so soon. Before that, phone was really bad. Lagfest with 4.1 with no ability to multitask. Aosp melted way to much battery for my liking. With 4.3 I got some of the multitasking power back, nearly no lag and very good battery. If it dies, i'll get a nexus 5 as it's the best bang for the buck. If not, I'll stick around. Depending on samsung with their knox tech though, the day they shove such crap down my throat is the day they lose me as a client.

I am seriously still with my Galaxy S2!!
This is because it worked great, until now ;P
I hope I switch soon to OPPO's new winner, or cyanogenmods new phone !
