Favorites Tray locked. Unable to customize icons. - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone. First post on what I hope will be many.
I've had my S4 for a week now having come from iOS and one thing I can't find is how to customize the apps in the favourites tray. Ive tried long-holding icons in order to move them out of the tray to make room for the ones I want to put in there, but there's no response to the long-hold. It's as if the icon is permanently locked.
I've googled everything I can think of, and so far the only advice I can find is to do it the way I've been trying. I can't find anything that looks relevant in the settings either.
Do you know if this is a carrier thing or a region thing, as it's strange I can't find anyone online with the same issue.
Running on Vodafone Australia with a plan.
I'd really appreciate any help because I want to replace that Internet icon with Chrome!
Cheers
DrT

It's a restriction on Australian firmwares... you're options are, install another launcher (such as apex or nova), root your phone and change a system file or flash another regions firmware.

Thanks for that. Well that's two region-oddities I've found so far. The other one being unable to turn off or change the camera shutter sound. Bizarre. Thanks for your help. I might go down the system files line or try a new launcher.

The third oddity is being unable to turn on lockscreen shortcuts (menu item doesn't exist).

as well as auto rotation in gallery...

Lock screen sucks

Does anyone know a way of getting rid of the ugly sgs lock screen???
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I was hoping they would change it with Froyo, guess that is not the case. Its the worst lock screen I have seen on any phone, period. I actually don't mind touchwiz but this lock screen is so ugly, it does not go with the tw launcher at all. You may need to go with a custom rom or some app that may change it.
Yeah i guess was hoping i wouldnt have to go the app install route, more system overhead :'-(

Widgetlocker is our only hope
you can use the Mod to restore the Android Lockscreen but it caused a bootloop on mine and I had to reflash so...forget it
I wish we had the Fascinate Lockscreen it uses the "Fit Puzzle" even if you dont have a message
Or just download No Lock from the market for free and remove the lockscreen..
Check out these 2 threads if you're interested in reverting to the stock android lockscreen.
[MOD] Android Stock Lockscreen for JM8,JPH,JPK,JM9,JPM,JPA,JP6
[MOD] Change Glass-Lockscreen to Android with a script
The problem with Widgetlocker is that it is a bit funny I've found sometimes (it isn't always instantaneous. My main problem with the Samsung lock screen these days, is that you can't disable the music widget on it (so if it's sitting in my pocket, the music sometimes turns on and off. I worked around it originally using another music player, but now I just put up with widget locker
and then what? a crappy lockscreen is better than none

I used Tayatuma Lite ROM on my SGS and he includes a really easy way to use the default android lock screen (just involved renaming a file IIRC).

thanks! they both seem waaaaaaaaaay to hard for me to follow though!
Its simple as overwriting a file in the phone rom (have to be rooted)
I gave up cause I tried the JPM odexed file and it just gave me a bootloop and I had to reflash
Using Root Explorer (requires root I believe) it's really easy to do: just download the android.policy.odex (from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=784992) according to your firmware version and replace the original in the folder system/framework. Do a backup of the original in your computer before.
To replace the file, put it in the internal sd of the phone through usb and then move it to the system/framework folder using root explorer. Then reboot the phone.
Easier to than to explain, really.

Out of curiosity, why don't you guys like the lockscreen?
Another: se video
http://it.androlib.com/android.application.com-teslacoilsw-widgetlocker-jqpAj.aspx
You know the stock lock screen looks lame and gives almost zero "look at me flavor" BUT... after using the stock lock screen I came to the realization that this one provides an effortless usability by being able to swipe the screen in any direction, with any finger or thumb, without looking and with any hand. It takes no effort and that is just plain good. My $.02
The problem with the bootloops with the stock android lockscreen mod is caused by file owner and group.
I faced this issue and after 3 re-flashes I finally decided to check the file details on root explorer beofre rebooting (duh). Turns out you just need to go to the market, download terminal emulator and write this there: chown root.root /system/framework/android.policy.odex (for odexed firmwares, check if the path is correct. Can't really recall)
That fixed it for me
if only the text can be removed, and we can add calendar reminders, all that good stuff.

Download location of apps since ICS

Hi guys, I have two issues that I really need your help with...
1, since installing ICS all of my apps that I download save in my Applications screen and my Home screen, how can I stop them saving in my home screen?
2, since buying the phone I have always seen the message ERROR!: I/O No Root Permissions.. does anyone know what this means and how I rectify it???
thanks
James

its the market putting a shortcut on the homescreen, it isnt installing them there, go into the play store - settings - and untick automatically add to homescreen
was the phone new or 2nd hand?
Thanks Richie....
What you suggested for the shortcut issue worked a treat, and thanks!
The phone was brand new on the 3 network

Upload various APK's

Hi there, I have an aussie galaxy note 3, and it came with a series of quirks that are really annoying me
First, the touchwiz launcher - you cannot edit the bottom row of icons in the dock, they are fixed.
The camera - The autofocus and camera shutter are ridiculously loud and cannot be shut off
The gallery - There is no auto rotate, to rotate to landscape, you must put your phone in landscape mode and then click on an icon to rotate.
Could someone please upload the above apks from their non aussie device? This means I could install them over the top of my existing ones?
Or is there an easier way of doing this? I tried deleting all the sound files in system/media/ui (everything like camerashutter.ogg) and still no success.
Cheers.

You may need to push them to /system/app via adb. Additionally, you might just need to resign them. Sorry I didn't test it beforehand. I just pulled them straight off my N3. I can try it once I get home from work later tonight.

Thanks, much apprecited.
Not sure if Im doing anything wrong.
Mounted apps as r/w
I moved those apks to system/apps
Changed permissions
Still failing.
Use root explorer and drop them in /system/app folder. Fix permissions, and reboot. No need to sign system apps.

Fyi. Don't delete old apk's until you are sure the new ones work. For example, rename systemuiapk to systemui.apk.bak

Thats what I did, maybe the apks the guy uploaded were bad. - I deleted the old apks after making backups with titanium so no issue
A guy on whirlpool said he just flashed another regions firmware, and that let him silence the camera and modify the bar at the bottom.
I don't have mine yet so can't test...
Does anyone know if that would mean the region locking would suddenly apply if i did that?
(Australian models don't have region locking...)

I dunno what to tell you. The apks were pulled straight from my phone which is running this rom
If your phone is N9005 then you did a huge mistake ..
Extract what you want from omega rom.

You got it all wrong guys. Changing the apks won't do sh*t.
You need to remove a few of lines in your others.xml relating to this. I am on Aussie firmware and have done it already.
Search system/csc/others.xml and open with text editor in Root Explorer. I am in a rush now but if you can't locate the lines to remove I will find later for you.
Once deleted save & exit then reboot.
Done and enjoy
Just intalled omega rom, so don't worry about it. May as well post it for others.

This happened to me, the weather widget disappeared, i was using new zealands metservice one and was stumpped for days....
So, have you recently moved it to sdcard in the application manager recently as that was what i did and it disappeared, when i moved it back device storage and then the widget was back.
THANK YOU ! you have led me in the right direction , turns out I have disabled the widget in the applications section and have completely forgot about it . Also the weather widget only works with the TouchWiz not the Nova Launcher .

Got the s5 today, few questions

I like the phone, but the 16gb causes a lot of concern. After downloading my music from Amazon, it's almost gone.
I can't find an option to put music from Amazon on my sd card, is that hte new kit kat "feature"?
Also, the test message preview on my lock screen only says "New Message", ther eused to be an option that gave me a preview of the actual message..is it gone?
On the Note 3, it had a setting where screenshots would enter auto edit mode, came in real handy for me. S5 doesn't seem to have this?
When I disabled my magazine, my home screen transitions isn't continuous ..I know I seen the s5 do this in review videos.
Did you root your phone yet with Towelroot? If so go to play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix and install this to get read/write to your sd card. The other stuff I can't help you with. Sorry.

Not yet. I will this weekend tho. Thanks bud
Before you root you may want to look into fix for SHealth and ISIS Wallet (if you use it). You have to stop SHealth and Health Services in app manager and clear data and cache before you installed Xposed. You may even have to uninstall their updates if I remember as well.
Install xposed and it's service , then update Shealth and it should work fine. Once you get that done install ISIS Root Bypass 3.0 module for xposed and check it in modules and reboot and the Wallet will work fine after that.
These were two things that I use often and really had to get working to be happy with root.

Why put off until tomorrow, what you could do today, and prevent yourself from being screwed by VZW when they push 4.4.3 soon, and Root may not work with it?
In the text messaging app you'll see a setting to display the message on the lockscreen instead of new message.
Plug your phone into the computer and drag and drop the music to the SD or use root explorer to move it there.. You don't need root to do this.
No, the S5 cannot auto enter edit mode as far as I know, maybe clear defaults of gallery and set images to auto open in an editor?
As far as continuous transitions just use apex or Nova.

You'll have to edit a file using Root Explorer then if you disable My Magazine you'll have endless home screen scrolling. I use Nova launcher which already has the option in settings. If you definitely have to have the stock launcher and you can't get infinite scrolling to work let me know I'll tell you which file to edit.
