Keyboard issues? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Currently having a problem using stock rooted rom with any keyboard I install. When swyping, the keyboard does not recognize my swype. It also is having issues with long pressing on any of the keys on the keyboard. Is this a known issue? Anyone know of a fix? It does not happen all the time and is impossible to try and force to happen. Currently I have enabled tracing to see if the issue is with my screen not completely recognizing my finger or unsure if it is an issue with the rom.

Do you have the same problem with the stock keyboard, or do you only have issues with custom keyboards?

That's odd. Maybe you could try uninstalling some apps or factory reset to check if you still have the problem with nothing else added on. Some apps can really cause problems.

HTC Keyboard calibration bug

is anyone else having a problem on R2BA020 where when you try to calibrate the htc keyboard all it does is force close on you. I reinstalled the keyboard and I even put the updated one (wasn't keeping track of it and didn't know they had new versions) and the same thing still happens O_O
Mines fine...
Mind you tho' i always do a factory reset after a firmware update. Im just a*&l like that lol..

Mine is fine upto the point that I don't use the calibrate option.
AFAICT, the keyboard actually performs better with no calibration data. If I do calibrate it... it is more error prone in the sense that key presses are out of whack. No crashes or other bugs, just calibrate seems to un-calibrate... thats all

What is up with the keyboard on 3.1?!

Has anyone else noticed the keyboard has taken a turn for the worst in 3.1? Multi touch no longer seems to work, nor does holding a key produce key repeat or shift characters. What the hell?! Can someone shed some light on this? Pretty please? It's driving me crazy.

Yeah, I just can't get used to the split layout.
keyboard working fine for me. Multitouch and all. Still a tad laggy on XDA though. Although I should say that scrolling and general performance on XDA is great now.

I thought so at first, too, especially since I'm not used to tap typing at all. I swipe using Ultra Keyboard on my Evo. But after a little while, it became pretty easy. Easier, of course, in portrait, especially for small hands like mine, but I don't have much problem now in landscape, either.
i agree. Its pretty frustrating actually
I dont got any prob with my multi touch either. Verizon 3g xoom 3.1

I reapplied the 3.1 update, and that seems to have solved the issue, although I have to start from scratch again. Thanks for your help, everyone.
Edit: Nevermind. The problem's back.

Two suggestions that may or may not help:
Go into recovery and
1) Do a fix permissions.
2) wipe dalvik cache in advanced. (note: this will cause a longer that usual boot up time on the next reboot)
3.1 rooted wifi, no problems here
Latest version of thumbs keyboard has a mode to go back to the full keyboard.
Click the thumbskeyboard icon and it will switch modes
Thanks again, everyone. Third time wiping and reflashing was, apparently, a charm. Hopefully it's for real this time, otherwise my Xoom might just find itself transformed into an expensive frisbee. I still don't know what went wrong. I never did get a chance to try fixing permissions or wiping Dalvik cache. Anyway, it's appropriate that today is Friday the 13th.
i never rooted the Zoom and I have that problem with my keyboard too. Long press on the / sign and the @ don't pop up like it used to. Or any other keys showing there alternate. Or holding the Backspace button and it doesn't delete charectors all together?

How do you do this?
2 factory resets fixed the problem. Wtf
Same problem on my wifi only xoom non root. Is there a way to get this keyboard working without having to factory reset as more then half the memory is already used and I really don't want to move it to my computer.
just switched to thumb keyboard and did a long press and it worked like normal so I left it in caps lock and switched to the stock keyboard and it starting working again.
I'm really confused about this now???
Working just fine here.

Keyboard Issues...Just me?

In the past few days, my keyboard has been acting up. I've been using Smart Keyboard pro since the day I got my phone and LOVED it, but for the past few days, it's been acting the bollix. Basically, I could be pressing the delete button for maybe 4 or 5 times, and it would enter 2 z's and delete 3 charachters?
I thought that it might just be the keyboard, so I switched to the default one, and it did happen, but not as much. I have just installed the Gingerbread Keyboard from the market, and it seems to be working ok, but it's still annoying. Anyone else had any problems with their keyboard entering random letters?

Try removing the factory installed screen protector... it does wonders for touch sensitivity and brightness of the screen. I highly recommend it.

already done that
I too have had this problem twice now.
The first fix was to install Gingerbread Keyboard and it seemed to fix.
Then i had the same problem again (If i pressed "p" it would also press "t" and pressing "delete" would also press "c") and fixed it by cleaning the screen with a wet wipe.
The problem for me when it happens is basically when you press the right hand side of the screen in landscape mode, it also think you are pressing the middle of the screen at the same time.
Its only happened twice so im not all that bothered.
Try cleaning the screen with wet wipe and see if it fixes.
I've been using swype...and as cool and innovative as it is...I'm always having to double our triple check my text msgs and posts...lately I've been having to correct my corrections..its a bit ridiculous so I'm trying to get into the habit if reading what I type every few words..

I just posted a thread about a multitouch issue on the xperia play. I think it may be causing your problems. It may not make sense what I am saying right now but if you read my thread it might make sense.
Basically when you are typing fast you will definitely have 2 touch points on the keyboard. and the Xperia Play is counting more than 2 touch points. So your third touch maybe registered as a 3rd finger.
Here is my post if you want to take a look
OK. I've just cleaned the screen with a wet wipe. I'm going to post this message and leave it if it makes any incorrect entries.
Seems to have worked. I will now try landscape orientation.
OK, so portrait seems to have worked well enough. I'm trying out the landscape input now. Seems to be working. I was kinda worried about this problem, but cleaning the screen seems to have sorted it out.
Also, I have installed swype, but I do not really like it. Its awkward. I used to love it on my WinMo 6.1 phone (Omnia) however, I do not feel that i should be restricted to what keyboard I can use because of the phone not responding to input properly.
Back to portrait, OK. Seems to have worked. Nope, its doing it again now. Dunno why?

I have a question.
Is this problem consistent like it happens every single time or does it come and go?
I personally use swype and I love it. I have not had this problem yet.
It's not a software problem, it is hardware.
When mine has had the problem, it does it on stock keyboard, chinese keyboard and gingerbread keyboard.
Basically, for me, when i touch the furthermost right hand side of the screen in landscape mode, it also registers as touching in the middle of the screen too.
Well it only started happening in the past few days. I'm gonna reflash back to 2.3.3 stock and see does that fix the issues. If not what's everyone's suggestions?

Tried to replicate this problem using the stock keyboard, and couldn't get the problem to happen.
So i'm not the only one who is having this problem?

Well that was just my theory to the OP. The multitouch problem does exist but I thought the problems with the OP's keyboard was related to this. Turns out its not.
I flashed CM7 and haven't experienced this problem yet, but I'm sure I will at some stage... *sigh*

Screen bug?

In locksreen I have this deadspot where it don't recognise touch. If you use hovering effect and move your finger over the spot, you can see the effect dissappear.
Sometimes when typing message with SwiftKey's flow, same problem occurs. Don't know if it's software or hardware bug.
Haven't seen problems anywhere else, only those two places.
Do you have same kind of problems?
Phone is 9505 and firmware is xxuamde.
I don't have this problem.

Try using a touch screen test app. There are a few on the play market. Sometimes the touchscreen comes right after a restart.
If it doesn't work, try a factory reset. If still not, you may want to get it replaced as the screen could be faulty.
*#0*# there I have tested screen and hovering. Everything works there. Very strange.

Yeah, really strange. Does a reboot fix it by any chance? It happens to my older i9000 too at times, and a reboot generally fixes it.

Lockscreen bug still there but maybe it helped with keyboard.
I may have to install firmware again if that solves the problem.

I changed SwiftKey to swype keyboard. I think keyboard problem is related to SwiftKey.
I don't care about locksreen problem anymore.

In that case, I think reinstalling the firmware would be a better choice. It should fix the issue. If the firmware image on the phone itself has the error then you may need to download the correct firmware for your phone and flash via odin.
I have gone through 2 i9505 handsets and both of them had this dead spot on lockscreen.
Towards the bottom just left of the centre.
They were also both on UMDE firmware.
I'm pretty sure it's a software issue.

[Q] phone does not wake up

Sometimes, when i try to wakeup my phone using home or power button, the capacitive keys light up but the screen is black.. I have to press power button to "sleep" and wake it up again... any idea? It was like this since I got it.... I updated recently and the problem still persists... it's not a big deal but a bit annoying at times.

It may be due to firmware bug or some installed app.
You didn't tell what rom you are using (stock or custom). And also check for installed apps that you suspect.

It's a hardware defect. Mine was like this too since 11th april. After changing the motherboard to the newer, 1.1100 version, the problem is competeley gone away. It's waking up every time correctly.
We had a topic about this earlier...
Hardware defect? Are you sure? I dont have a warranty. Bought it abroad. I was hoping it was just a software glitch. I am on stock unrooted

I'm totally sure because i had this bug from the beginning. I was trying all firmware updates, factory reset, etc. It's not related to the fingerprint sensor or any app installed or not.
Ok i have no choice. Will try the solutions i read from google, seems to he a common issue
