Earpiece scratches - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, i've noticed that the earpiece on my s4 scratches way easier than on my s3. It's due to the fact that it is slightly more raised off the front glass than on the s3. Is anyone else noticing small scratches on the earpiece?

Same here,
The chrome like ring around the earpiece easily scratches off

Tried to scratch mine with no help, still intact :good:

Don't try. It should scratch easily with reuglar use..lol im also seeing it scratched in alot of review videos if you look closely...in my opinion the earpiece on both the s3 and s2 were less sratchable...

I already tried, even with scissors :silly:

Yep I got a scratch already on the metal cover for the ear piece. I also notice that the second and third little hole (from left to right) seems to be clogged or a metal part just underneath - oh an the last one too. I even attempted to unclogged one of those holes with a very sharp pin and that's when I notice they are not clogged. Those holes look just look clogged but it's just components under the grill.

I got massive scratches on the first 3-4 days of use on the camera metal ring. It should be made from the same material on the sides.

Same here also got scratches on the camera grill!

Just got my mercury screen protector today

Anyone have an tips for putting it on as I've had 0 luck with screen protectors in the past.

And why is there 2 screen protectors one coloured round the edges and one just clear?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Crisis averted. Did the ole scotch tape trick to remove the dust particles. That should be in all screen protectors instructions as it works a treat.

Good luck

My general rules are (1) try to do it in a humid atmosphere, so there's less dust in the air, eg. a bathroom with a shower running, (2) to wash the back of the protector with water just before applying, and (3) try to fix errant dust motes with tape on the front to peel up a corner, and tape underneath to grab the dust, which it sounds like you've done. Personally I'm a big fan of the Brando ultra-clear protectors. Good luck!
I'm really loving the look of the phone with the colour change but the screen seems to have a kind of static look to it. Hopefully I'll get used to it as the phone looks great

I bought some SGP protectors for my S III. Well one of the kinds I bought was the ultra optics or whichever the the one that resists fingerprints is and it has almost like a texture on the screen which is kind of annoying to look at. I feel like it dulls the whole thing. I may take it off eventually and put the remaining ultra crystal I have from my i747
Really loving this screen protector.
The galaxy's s3 seems to me like it is very prone to scratches.
I always keep my phone in a pocket with nothing in it like keys or money yet I've got some pretty deep scratches on it.
I didnt get anywhere near as much with my s1, s2 or galaxy tab p1000.
Basically this screen is giving me protection and I'd even go as far as to say that it is making the scratches that I've acquired less noticeable.
Feels great too. I'm my opinion better that original screen and you have the added bonus of the anti fingerprint.
Defo recommend this

Best way to clean the earpiece speaker grill?

So far I've tried canned air, a speaker cleaner app, a qtip, tape, microfiber cloth, and vacuuming, yet my speaker grill remains gray from dust. This doesn't just affect this phone, everyone phone I've ever had has this issue. Anyone got a method I haven't tried?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
I use my dust destroyer!
It worked for me. You can try to make your own little q-tip using a tooth pick and just a small amount of cotton and make your own little q-tip and use that to clean.
If that doesn't work, you can always try WD-40. Lmao. I'm kidding.

Would compressed air be a good option? Along side a cottonbud?
I am very interested in this subject. Subscribed.

Compressed air works well so far. Sorry to hijack, but what is the red light on the right side of the earpiece speaker grill? Does everyone have this? I looked and couldn't find anything about it.

Red light? There's no red light...
Edit: Are you talking about the front facing camera?

I thought that was the brightness sensor.

No. Have you ever seen a HOX with the light in the speaker grill? It looks like that! It may be a piece of red glitter that's stuck in the grill, but it looks just like a faint red light. Compressed air didn't get it out so I figured it was a light!

Worked on it tonight with a toothpick, vaccum, and microfiber cloth looks better but not perfect. Also realizing google choice of chrome plated plastic around the edges was a fail as the crime is starting to get scuffed up.

I find that compressed air with the straw attachment works perfectly.
I use a soft toothbrush to clean out the speaker and all of the fine particles of dust and lint that seems to get stuck between the bezel and glass at the top.

Yeah I did notice that too, the bezel and the glass aren't flush and thus dust can easily get stuck in between

How about compressed air and maybe a bit of blue-tac, not too much as you dont want it going between the mesh. Could be a good idea (Or horrible on thoughts?,)

Brilliant! I found a forum on google that suggested tape, but I tried that and ended up just getting nasty adhesive over the glass. Sticky tac might work better, I'll give that a try

Let us know how it goes. Mines too new to gather anything worth cleaning off.
May be a stupid idea, but what about static electricity to magnet it off?

Dropped my GD phone. Four days old.

I was walking down the street. Get a notification. Go to pull it out of my pocket. Snags my coat and slides right to the sidewalk. Only dropped two feet at most cuz I kinda fumbled it with my other hand. Quite irritating as there is no way to fix it but to find a new chassis or buy a new device. I'm usually so careful. Never dropped a phone before. Seriously ever. I'm super ocd about the condition of my devices. I dunno if I can handle looking at the little dings for as long as it takes to afford a new device/parts. Might post pictures later if anyone cares to see the results of a standard pocket to concrete drop. Luckily no cracks or scratches in the glass. Tiny dings and tiny tiny scratches on the back.

Any scratch on Front + Back screen? (With Protector/ case)? Picture would be great and thanks for sharing.
I did not have a case on it at the time. There was a small ding on the front glass but removing the OEM film cleared that up. The rear has a few tiny dings and itty nitty scratches. The aluminum frame has a couple dings. Nothing that most people would crap about but most of us here at xda are kinda nutty about clean devices. I'll post photos as soon as my wife comes home.

Sorry to hear that. But lucky the screen doesn't crack/ shutter. Thanks and looking forward to see the details.

i could see it happening easily enough myself. this is the first phone iv had with a shiny back on it. my last phone was a cheap samsung so the plastic makes it easier to grip. it would be even worse with cold hands id say. ill probably try and get some skin for the back of it when they are out, something with a bit of texture on it would be better. and it would cover the logo too!
what does the screen feel like with out the screen protector on it? its just regular glass? and did the logo come off?
The logo did come off. Its kinda cool. The glass underneath feels harder and less slick I guess. It's hard to explain but the glass underneath doesn't grab fingerprints and oil and dust as much as the film did. Also when there are finger prints and smudges you can't see them as much when the display is on. I took the film off my xperia ion as well.

Keep an eye on http://www.witrigs.com/ currently they have only Z1 but surely soon they will have compact.

Bent screen

No I do not own a flex
Anyway when I put it screen down on a flat surface and touch the corners it starts rocking.
How to describe better.
One finger on left upper, one on the right down corner and touching once up once down. (Or the opposite corners, has to be diagonal)
If you have the same issue, your should feel it.
It does not distort the screen, but not sure it won't get worse in the future.
Anyone else encountered this?
Sent from my LG-D802 using Tapatalk
I have this but it's because I manually replaced my screen and did not have something to put in so t wouldn't rock but since I use a case that covers the bezel it's not a problem

In my case it's the glass that's bent. Not like it's lifted, but deformed. Not sure how it really happened. Maybe the original quick window cover... or just having it in my pants

The multi-element lens is made out of plastic, but the lens holder that is facing the outside world is cut out from glass. As said before, it will take some scratches, but same rules apply as for the screen: try to protect it from damage.
Can it take being put on the surface of a smooth table? Yes. Can it resist keys, sand and knives? No.

Some phones have the lens protector, some don't.
I am on my third gs5, first 2 didn't even have a protector over the camera lens and the 3rd one does
I'm going to leave it on since there's a nice cutout for the camera optic, so it doesn't interfere with photos

why was it a pain? the cutout hole is perfect size and doesn't get in the way of the quality of the photos......
i remember i took a picture of something with the cover on, and then without it, and it was exactly the same...no loss in quality
It was causing some users interference with the camera. That was the issue I had at least.

Scratched camera lens, photo quality
My S5 camera quality has dropped significantly lately. The photos have become quite grainy, especially in mid and low light. I compared it to friend's S5 and you can see the difference right on the screen even without taking a photo. My camera lens is with scratches, friend's not. Can it be the reason ? If so, is it possible to get the scratches out somehow ? I have seen videos of scratch repair for HTC One M8 (http://youtu.be/xhhOcIRMfWc ). Can it work on S5 ? Any advice, any solution ?
