[Q] Custom kernel and reverting to stock kernel - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Long time reader, first time poster. I just unlocked the bootloader and flashed the latest franco nightly with fastboot and have two questions:
1. From what I've understood, in order to perform OTA updates, I have to be on the stock kernel. Do I just flash the stock boot.img extracted from the factory image? I think I may have read something about additional changes being done to the system partition after flashing a custom kernel, but I can't seem to find the thread.
2. If I want to flash a different kernel or update the existing one, do I just flash the fastboot image? Does it just overwrite the existing one or do I have to perform any additional steps, like a wipe?
I have not flashed a custom recovery or rooted the device and would like to keep it that way.

Yes. Some kernels do modify system files. If you wanted to get back to stock for an ota you'd flash both the boot.img and the system.img

Thanks for the quick reply.
Do I keep my current settings and SMS messages when I flash system.img?
I'm guessing this is only necessary before performing an OTA update. If I'm only updating the kernel I just flash boot?

Yep your data will stay intact.
Yep just flash boot. Some say you should clear dalvik cache as well.

The 4.2.1 OTA Help

So i just switched from HTC ONE X to the nexus 4 and my version is 4.2 and i just rooted it. I have the system OTA update 4.2.1. Should i take it or is there another way to update my phone to 4.2.1 without OTA?
Do not OTA update once you're already rooted; flash this stock ROM (https://www.dropbox.com/s/syi2vmxh0noi2bv/occam-jop40d-factory-ca7602f0.tgz) and re-root.

That is a tgz file, not a zip. You'll need a PC, 7zip and fastboot.

Yes yes i figured it out
I've been trying to do this without wiping my device. It's still downloading so I haven't seen the contents, but I'm assuming just flash the .img files with fastboot and it won't erase anything? Would the Rootkeeper app work for this?
if you're only rooted, ota will work and would install without issues. it will only fail if you have modified some system files or the recovery. no need to reflash anything except the supersu for root if you don't use rootkeeper
I'm using Franco's kernel and CWM recovery. I have the stock system files, so if I flash those back, how do I go about applying this update? I'm so sick of seeing the update message in my notification bar and do not want to wipe to flash a new ROM.
Edit: I have previously tried flashing the stock boot.img and recovery.img, but trying the update via the notification still failed.

Flash the stock recovery.img and boot.img. You won't lose anything.

Your settings probably also modified the system files. Try flashing that too since you have the stock files. Just don't do userdata so your data is kept intact

why it is not possible to make OTA update on rooted phone?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
I rooted, unlocked bootloader and flashed recovery yesterday then installed the OTA after, had no issues at all. If you are using cwm recovery it re-roots and prevents stock recovery being flashed after the ota is installed.
So am running rooted 4.2.1 at the mo.. And its sick

You can, it's fine and will work as long as you have stock recovery. You might lose root but can easily re-root if necessary.

Custom Reovery failed to install OTA update

Hi All,
Want to OTA update my N7 3G (2012) to 4.4.2, but failure to update in TWRP.
Since OTA update not allowed in custom revovery, it any way to update it ?? Or I must wipe and fresh install 4.4.2 ??
Otherwise, is OTA update alloed in rooted device ?? (keeping stock recovery)
Thanks
OTA updates are possible with both, standard and custom recovery, but if you have done modifications to kernel / system most likely the OTA will fail. Or, if it doesn't fail after the update you will loose the custom recovery.
The easiest way to update is flashing boot.img and system.img (extracted from the appropriate Google factory image) by fastboot.

You can find a description how to do it on my blog, even if it explains haow to install Android 4.2, the steps are the same.
OTA's are crap. If you're rooted w/custom recovery there is never (IMHO) any good reason to take an OTA.

Flashable Factory Image zips - Android 5.0 LRX21P

This is essentially the Nexus 7 2013 WiFi's factory stock image in flashable zip format, so you can flash the device back to factory stock using CWM or TWRP, without having to rely on fastboot. It is useful for people who broke their USB port, but still have custom recovery. Or messing with roms on the go and wanting to return to stock without having access to a computer.
Included are separate zip files that will flash specific partitions of the device. To have a complete stock form of the device and preventing any issues, make sure you flash all zip files. More advance users can choose to only flash specific partitions to suit their needs.
>>> DOWNLOAD: razor_lrx21p_stock_flashable_zips <<<
Flash instruction (Important):
0. (optional) Create a full nandroid backup before flashing is recommended.
1. To have a working and stable OS, make sure you flash all the zip files, unless you know what you're doing.
2. To prevent serious incompatibilities, do a factory reset if you are coming from KitKat or from a custom rom. I would only skip doing a factory reset if the device is already running stock Lollipop.
Note: If you do not want to erase your custom recovery, do not flash the "recovery.zip", this will return your custom recovery back to stock.
I have tested flashing these multiple times with my Nexus 7 WiFi 32gb with no issues. Before proceeding with flashing, each zip files will check to make sure if the device is a Nexus 7 2013 WiFi (flo), so it won't allow you to accidentally flash on a wrong device.
If you have any issues after flashing these, even after factory resetting, follow this guide to use fastboot instead to return the device to stock.

Thanks a lot.
I am currently using Cleanrom. I have download the stock rooted Lolipop, and wish to flash that. It was said in that thread, that I need the latest bootloader. So from the zip file above, should I only flash the bootloader and then flash L? Or would it not make a difference if I flashed all the zips (besides the recovery)?
No, I do not want to get rid of my custom recovery. I am using the latest version of TWRP
Flashed with TWRP, works well. Thanks a lot!

No they should all work. The phone will boot correctly as long as you have all the proper kernel (boot), system (OS) and bootloader installed.

You should flash both the bootloader and DDR zip. Then flash the the rom, it should work. Also if you are coming from KitKat, you will need to factory reset or you will get lots of errors.
Marvellous!

Did the update remove root, or is this one of those issues related to not doing a factory reset?
All else seems to be working at the moment.

So the bootloader and DDR zips can be flashed through TWRP to update the bootloader only, and then a separate rooted ROM (ie scrosler's) can be flashed through TWRP with the help of the updated bootloader?
I did try to flash the bootloader only, but it failed. The need for the DDR would explain why.
Cheers.

Bought my nexus 7 2013 3weeks ago it came with 4.4.2 and i towelrooted it n flashed twrp now on a custom rom but wish i didnt coz i wanted the updates 5.0 but i dont have a pc so this is what i needed.
So if i flash all zips does that mean il be stock 5.0 and ready for future updates?
Aslo my bootloader is already 4.04 so should i stil flash the one above?
Is it possable to flash jus system+boot zips as a second rom (multirom)?
I am not going to install 5.0 yet because some of the apps I use are not yet compatible. If I just flashed the boot loader but stayed with my current ROM , cleanrom, would that be a problem?

Hi James,
You'll need to re-root your device after you flashed these images.
CF-Autoroot will help you here; click.
You'll need to reinstall your custom bootloader as well if the stock bootloader does not meet your requirements.

It depends, for normal Android devices, if you factory reset using stock recovery it will wipe everything in the device. For TWRP and CWM, if you factory reset it will leave your internal storage alone.

None of them control userdata, I excluded that partition image. If you want to dirty flash, just don't do a factory reset or wipe your /data folder.

Do not flash these zip as a secondary rom for multirom, this is meant to flash for the entire device only. This is factory images, not roms. You could download some type of stock based roms and use it with multirom instead. If you have the latest bootloader you don't need to flash it again, but it won't hurt if you do. Yes, flashing all the zips and factory resetting will return the device to stock.

Because this is Android 5, it have extra security to prevent rooting like in the past. I believe to get root you need try Chainfire's CF-AutoRoot method, or use a custom kernel and flash SuperSu.

This isn't an update. It is a factory image that return the device to stock form. You will lose root and every changes to the system partition in the process.

No only on Nexus 7 2013 WiFi 32gb

Getting my 6p tomorrow. Suggested first steps?

Been looking through the root guide and of course will be unlocking and rooting. Should I first unlock, flash TWRP, load stock. Set up stock with my accounts and settings. Reboot to TWRP. Make NAND back up. Then root and then flash a rom? I'm still confused about the library IMG file. Will I need to do anything with it assuming the phone I receive was manufactured within the last 2 months?
Any other tips/suggestions would be much appreciated.

If you plan on unlocking bootloader, do that first. Device has to be wiped clean when doing so.
update to the March MHC19I update before modifying the system partition. It'll save you the headache of doing it via fastboot and re-rooting.

Unlock bootloader then upgrade to latest FW by OTA (or vice versa?), then flash TWRP and nandroid. Now root.
Great. I hope the OTA will pop up as soon as possible or is there a way to manually search for updates through system settings? By the way, thank you everyone.

Unlock your bootloader, then take the OTA(s) to the latest build (MHC19I). You can't take an OTA with TWRP installed so don't flash that first. If for some reason the OTA doesn't appear you can just flash the factory images for the latest build in order to update. Once you're fully up to date you can flash TWRP and make a nandroid backup. Then just flash whatever ROM you want to use. Keep in mind that after flashing the ROM + gapps you also need to flash the appropriate vendor image to suit the build of the ROM you're flashing. You can flash it with fastboot, or use the "install image" option in bottom-right corner of the install menu in TWRP (TWRP can flash some images now).

Yes it is possible. Just download the complete N factory image, plus the modified boot image (kernel).
Extract the system.img, and vendor.img out of the factory image.
And now, flash the three files using TWRP - system.img (system image), vendor.img (vendor image), and boot.img (kernel).

flashfire is a great app, does it all for you...
I simply downloaded OTA through the system update, then after it was downloaded instead of allowing it to "Restart and Install" which would have failed due to my custom recovery, I just opened flashfire. It found the OTA automatically and I hit Flash button. Done!
I ended up loading up from the PC. It's better this way because I only had 2gb of space on my 64gb!!! Bad thing is, I have spent about 2hrs installing!

Foes your custom recovery still work? I tried this method and it just wouldn't boot into TWRP. Been trying all day thru different methods. Idk how to use adb fastboot on a computer so I'm a lil lost when trying any other method. I've been using Wug's toolkit but until he pushes an update for it I'm on stock MM until i can figure something out.

why does the wug toolkit not work?
I don't know a lot about Flashfire as far as it's compatibility with Custom Roms and such. I was previously on stock android Marshmellow with root and twrp. My phone downloaded the OTA for Android N when I "enrolled" in the beta program. I chose not to allow the phone to attempt to install the OTA as it would likely fail due to my custom recovery, to my surprise when I opened flashfire it offered to install the "update.zip" (AKA the OTA) and I simply hit "flash". It installed the OTA (did not use TWRP) and rooted my phone all on it's own, I did not lose anything no data was lost.
As a side not I would not recommend using Flashfire if you don't know how to use fastboot commands and the Android SDK. It is not complicated and it is a almost certain way to fix your phone when things go haywire. I strongly encourage you to learn how to use it as it is essential to owning a Nexus imo. These root kits and flashfire programs are cool, but they are always subject to failures...
