I am in dire need of something to replace my Incredible s.
I work around steel fabrication, meaning lots of steel dust and shavings. After a year, I already had to replace my Incredible s speakers because they became loaded with metal dust, and they are already going out again after a few months.
Anyone use their Nexus in smiler conditions?
I was about to hit the buy button when I read Sony announced the Xperia ZR (water and dust proof/resistant), and now am holding off to see the pricing. It also does away with the two only things that made me hesitate on the Nexus in the first place, memory (I can slide my 32gb card into it) and no glass back.

Hm, metal shavings aren't gonna be good for any phone, even less so for the n4..
The grill holes for the ear piece are small and metal shavings shouldn't get in it to bad I've had to blow mine out a couple of times with canned air but it was from dust of mudding and then sanding dry wall.
Now as for the speaker I think this would go out very easily as the grill holes are bigger
Personally I would look at the HTC one, it's made from a solid price of aluminum and Injected molding for the plastic parts however I do not know what the speaker grills look like for the one. Just seems like it may do better around metal

If you can get a hold of something to block the openings on the phone, the N4 should be fine. I have no experience with anything near metal dust, but I imagine it could be pretty bad for any device's internals having direct exposure to it (short circuiting and whatnot).
That Xperia ZR sounds like it would be a better choice though.
The only real problem I have is that the speakers have magnets, and hold onto any steel dust that get through the screen covering them. The rest of the phone stays clean with a screen protector and tpu case. I never find any more then a few specks under the case or under the back cover.
when I pulled the speakers out they had a good teaspoon of steel dust stuck all around them.
I'm a steel fabricator as well. What I do is keep my nexus 4 in a zip lock bag. A thicker and smaller one that I got from a shipment of bolts.

Well.... I weld and work on heavy equipment everyday and have never had a problem. That said I take caution with my phone but there has been a few "incidents" and the only issue I have ever had was caused by media from a blasting machine scratching the screen. I am sure it has been exposed to metal shavings but have never seen any on the speaker grills. I love my nexus, but it isn't the most rugged phone. If I had genuine concern for contaminates from the work environment I would look into a dust and water proof model. Speaking of which Cat has its own android phone coming out....

why not put some extension at your tpu case to prevent metal dust to infiltrate?

Not that it matters much here, but the "Z" has a glass back, the newly announces "ZR" is reported to have a plastic back.
what if you stick a piecee of tape over the speaker and ear piece before going to work everyday? sounds kinda cheap but it might work
Take a look at the Cat B15 http://catphones.com/ or JCB Toughphone http://www.jcbtoughphone.com/ or Fortis phones.
They are all listed on Amazon and would likely hold up better than the Nexus even in a hard case.

If you dont like typing through a loose peice of plastic like myself
Clean out speaker ports daily with a magnet
Do not use compressed air. I have damaged several speakers with this method.

i rate it a 5 cuz its AWSOME!!! btw i have a few scratches on the battery door cover. can i polish it too to hide the scratches?
What i done was use sand paper designed for metal Or wet and dry sandpaper would also do just fine. then just use a cloth and apply metal polish to it along with the grain of the metal. took me 30 minutes and the metal polish was under £5. And it got rid of all the scratches that were on it so its a good scratch remover too
It looks good. I did this on my HD2. The only problem is it becomes tarnished, scratched and rather unsightly in no time. I often wondered if some sort of lacquer may have been the answer.
i might think of doing this later. is the door more prone to scratches after the polish?

I should probably consider doing this, it looks pretty sweet, and my battery door is currently covered in scratches, and the whatever the coating that goes over the aluminum is, is starting to peel off.
Although I'm likely going to get an extended battery from Seidio, so I'll probably hold off until then, since I'll be getting a new battery door with it.
Might try something like this too. My G2's battery door has the stock clear coat plastic flaking off. I've started to just peel all of it off so I can do something else to it.
i done it a week ago and its just fine no scratches at all, if im not sure the coating they put on the battery door is what scratches because once i had taken it off the scratches disappeared. its like a mirror if you put enough metal polish on it i notice people admiring themselves in the back of my phone when im texting

Ya thats my biggest complaint. That film is peeling off my back cover also. If i could get that off i would be a happy camper! Not really looking to go to the hardware store to buy **** though. Would rather use some type of household product if that is even possible

I remember when this was done a while back, it's still pretty cool. I scraped off my coating when it started peeling. Just use something like copper or a hard plastic so it doesn't scratch the metal. Not sure, but something like acetone should be able to soften the coating and remove it.
By the way - how in the hell did you remove the 'G2' on there? It's recessed just as much as the 'HTC' and I wouln't grind the plate down that much personally. So how did you do it?
EDIT: Took a second look and saw the 'with htc sense'. No wonder it doesn't say G2 lol.

Ok, so I've had the Note for only a week and just today I noticed three scratches on the metal frame around the back camera lens. I've really babied this phone and only kept it in my pant pockets. It seems that its really easy to scratch it. Anyone else notice this?

Indeed, and I'm waiting for mines, which should be coming in this week. But even a case is not gonna protect the camera or the metal frame, but I guess it will lower their height a little bit due to the higher case.

The DAY I bought my Galaxy Note it was put inside a protective pouch...
Been 2 weeks and looks like it was just unboxed...
I had the Galaxy S for one year before upgrading to the note. I carried it without screen or body protection on many pants pockets, backpack pockets, carried it to the beach, mountains...
After purchasing the Galaxy Note I gave it to a friend, and after a good cleaning, it looks as new. The screen is absolutely untouched. It only has a scratch on a corner of the metal on the border after a fall on concrete.
I don't know if the Note can endure this, for the moment I'll be very careful with it.
I just felt this is exaclty what is going to happen the moment I unboxed the phone. My solution was putting an old (but good quality - Vikuiti) screen protector so it covers the lens and surrounding plastic and carefully cutting around it with a hooked scalpel. Works perfectly.

I dropped my tabby lightly today (something that Doesn't happen). despite it being in a case, I managed to scratch the corner up pretty nasty and unclip the clips holding the back plate in the corner. Wow.
A few minutes later totally unrelated (I hope), I felt that the center of my screen very warm. I took off the case to check the temperature in the back, behind the case where it cant ventilate and Wow! it's running hot! mostly Under the ffc and close to the left side of the tablet holding it landscape. I wasn't even doing anything heavy.
So yeah. I love this thing but I gotta say. I hate the choice of materials here Samsung, Plastic just isn't right for a 500 $ flagship. I gotta say, I'm pretty amazed with the gps on this thing though. .. I know it wouldn't be possible without the plastic construction. I gotta wonder why the compass is so bad though.
Anyway, thats my rant for the day. enjoy.

Also which part of your tab hit the ground. Though i feel for you and your tab, a lesson can be learned from this on how (if ever) in an event you drop your device, how to drop it "the right way" to avoid damage such as this.

If it were a metal back that's tightly bonded to the frame your post would be about how easily the screen cracks. My OG G-Tab 10.1 got run over by an "excuse the cart" after it fell out of my briefcase at DFW airport. It survived unscathed. You spin the wheel and take your chances.

I wouldn't have another metal one. They don't give for the screen and moreover, just check how poor wifi and gps signals are on tablets that are made of all metal... such as the TF201... or even more famous tablets...
Well how about wood? Jk idk.. maybe thicker plastic, or a metal structure/bezel with plastic for the back. The iPad feels pretty solid though so idk if metal is always bad.
My case is a poetic faux leather case.. I think it had 'slim' in the name.
It slipped off my car's seat thanks to my dumb disobedient cat and landed right on that corner

Love the materials rants. First week I dropped my n7k from about 5 ft with only a thin elago case and a screen protector of course and it lands face Down on rough gravel and only a tiny Nick on the very outer bezel between screen protector and case . Nice job Sammy . Last week a co worker drops her iPhone 4 like 3 ft on flat asphalt and crack screen . Hahaha get what you pay for I guess . ....

Sorry to hear. My luck, thankfully, has been different. Dropped mine twice now and nothing wrong. Both times were without a case. Finally got a case and no drops since.
You should know for the asus transformer prime that metal backs are more pretty than functional.

Well from what I understand though I am not an expert on this the plastic material is better then metals on Ipad as it can absorb most of the shock bot none the less because of the weight of the tablet you will damage it no matter how lightly it is dropped but that said I have a micromax tablet which has been droped kicked around by my sisters kids to an extent where the casing has cracked but tablet is still running
I sugguest you look at rubber casing because they have the tendency to absorb shock more then anything else only draw back they do not look fancy

once and forever: Samsung devices are cased in polycarbonate and not plastic !!!!!! And this material is used in aircraft and space engineering, it is light and robust and exceeds cheap aluminum in most parameters !!!!!!

I do not know how you define plastic, but that sounds like plastic. It is the other way around. We are flying in plastic planes . And I do not think that planes are built out of the same polycarbonates than this tablet. That is far too simplistic.

For sure the note 10.1 feels like the cheapest device I have ever got , (in materials and build quality) specially the back blue plastic cover, but if it wasn't made like this it would have been allot heavier and very expensive so get a silicon case or something for it, forget about its build quality and enjoy the real power underhood

Ive had my nexus 4, for about a 1week. I'm very careful with my phones. Had the iPhone since the 3G-till the 4S switched back and forth beetween android. Having the G1 and the G2 then G2x and the GS3 now I have the nexus 4. Never having problem with a cracked screen on ANY PHONE. After a long shift at work 12hrs at a (Nissan dealership) I take my phone out of my pocket and the back is cracked?!?! Not once did I drop it or bump it in my jacket. So my only conclusion is that the phone is very sensitive and maybe with the slight pressure with crack? Anyone have same problem or info? Currently waiting for Google to send me my replacement. Hopefully I'm under warrnty for the crack. (fingers crossed)

You must have bumped it or bent it. Glass doesn't crack by itself. Otherwise there would be tons of these posts on here.
That being said the back glass does look pretty thin, so a hit in the right (wrong) place could do the damage maybe. I dunno. Mine is caseless and it's still perfect.

Not sure if it was in that thread or another but I saw a user say they had it on their desk, heard small popping/crackle noise, and the back of his N4 spider webbed from the bottom corner, which would support the idea of the temp changes causing it.

Because of its size it seems easy to angle it in a way where it can get flexed. I experience this using my.phone in my pockets often.
Two weeks of your time and $64 + shipping there is what it cost me. Google will not cover damage as a warranty claim and LG won't quote a price to repair. Good luck

These phones can't really be kept in a trouser (pant) pocket without some potential problems. I think the main issue is when you go to sit down, your pocket bends into a right angle, and your phone wants to follow that shape. Being a fairly large phone it can't get find a space in your pocket where it isn't under some forces trying to bend it.
Eventually your phone starts to bend slightly, this at best may just cause the glass back to pull away from the back adhesive, at worse it bends enough to break the glass. It seems a similar issues were the cause of Wi-Fi antennas disconnecting internally on the HTC One X.
These type of devices are not called "pocket phones", they are called "smart phones" and don't respond well when stuffed into a trouser pocket.

My nexus 4 cracked as well. Had it inside a warm gym changing room then put it in my coat pocket ,which btw is big enough and located so that it wont bend the phone at all. I then went outside (imin the uk where it is snowing hence cold) then pulled it out and it had got a crack on it. Not happy to say the least, and no its not covered by lg warrenty.

Afternoon peeps
I have discovered something a little concerning about the XZ.
I clean my phone on a regular basis of fingerprints and dust, today I noticed the little rubber covers were dirty around the sill so I decided to clean them. with a cloth I wiped down the phones glass slabs and then wiped the rubber gaskets as with these ports there are nooks and cranies where dirt can get so I got out the compressed air to blow out any small particles.
To my horror the phone inflated making the screen and the back glass flex out off the phone like a balloon, I was sure I was seeing this so i held the phone in a manner where i could watch the reflection on the glass and sure enough it's bending to accommodate the compressed air. This may explain the glass being very sturdy to drops due to this flex, but how thick is it if it bends so easily?
For reference I was using canned compressed air, not a high powered high compressor.
I thought I'd share with the community about this, I suppose it shows it's water tight as it didn't escape out a gap etc.
Either way i'm a little shocked at the glass thickness.

That sounds like the battery expanding. It could indicate a faulty battery.

As I said gentlemen, the phone expands with the air pressure from the compressed air canister. The phone returned to its original shape as soon as I stopped spraying the air.
This isn't a case of the phone staying like it, but seeing glass flex that much is worrying

I would much rather see it flex alot then shatter personally. If it can take as much abuse as you say then it simply makes me more confident in its ability to survive damage

Not surprising, if it bellows out then that means its perfectly sealed. Other IP57 phones would do the same.
Try doing it with a non-IP57 phone and there are plenty of gaps for the air to escape..

Yeah. Because the phone's shell is sealed. So nothing comes in means nothing will come out.
The phone itself uses thin glass and is flexible. I remember the YouTube videos of the Korean guy who bent his Z into an arc shape (it was fine). So yeah, I'd say what you are seeing is correct.

I read the title of the post and got scared -_- lol. After reading it thought I fully understood what went on with the "balloon effect". The glass for these phones are amazing...very strong and flexible...like a pole dancer

Inflexible glass would shatter the instant you dropped it from waist height on to any non carpeted surface.
The glass on the Z is much more intelligently designed and expensive than that.

Agree with the above post. People are really taking the Glass by the conventional sense of the word. Windows and such. I much prefer the flexible variety. Which you may or may not know traces it's roots back to Roman times. Bit of useless information for you.

Totally.
And some people just don't know how tempered glass works.
I'm a builder and when we demo houses we throw hammers, bricks whatever we can find to smash tempered glass. 99% of the time everything just bounces off.
But tap the raw edge with a chisel and the whole pane literally explodes.

i see you ride DH so lemme ask you this : is your visor flexible or not ? Yes it is... so it doesn't shatter on impact. the same applies to the glass ! Anything that is flexible is a-okay !

People expect lightweight & affordable phones. If you take away those two factors, it would be easily possible to use more advanced materials, but your phone might be a couple of times more expensive and certainty a bit heavier.

I'd only be concerned if it DIDN'T expand at least slightly. It just proves that it's properly sealed and air/water tight.
Blasting such a small device (or any device) with so many sensitive parts all located close to each other with any form of compressed air (be it canned or motorized compressor) is never a good idea. Unless you truly understand what you are doing and know what will happen as a result.
e.g. no consideration was taken into account that the device is water tight and therefore air tight; the effects of using compressed air on it could have been much more severe given there is no where for the air to depressurize. A bending case/glass is nothing compared to potentially cracking the LCD screen underneath the exterior glass.
An old (clean) toothbrush would probably be the better choice for your next spring cleaning session
This is the so called dragon trail glass I believe its a very strong and flexible glass. Do some research
