So I was just chillin...watching live stream of Google I/O and suddenly I see Hugo pulls out a Galaxy S4...I was shocked and amazed at the same time, like "is this really happening right now?!" and BOOM! It was running vanilla jelly bean.
Now, my question to you guys and maybe a few devs if they see. Is it possible that we will be able to port the rom over (when/if the bootloader gets unlocked) to the already existing devices and get updates directly from Google like the owners of the Google S4?
Just curious thats all.
There are about five threads on this in the general subforum.

Has there been any word of a GSM version for the rest of the world like me?
I assume this is rootable and Samsung will not use locked bootloaders like Motorola Milestone (which I regret even owning) ?
Is it possible to port Cyanogenmod to this or Galaxy S?
Should I pick this or an HTC phone with a QWERTY keyboard instead for ROM compatibility? (The rumored HTC Vision)
In an experienced person's opinion, Should I go for this or keep saving my money and go for an Android 3.0 phone instead? (rumored to come out in Q4 2010)
First question I don't know the answer to.
Second question yes it will most likely have root upon release.
Third question is most likely not. With Samsungs complicated file structure and lack of open source code the phone will most likely only receive custom roms based off of only Samsung firmware. That means the only way you will get froyo is when Samsung releases it.
Last question yes I would wait for an HTC device. The community already has a good grip on these devices which should give you a much better chance of having a large choice of custom roms. (mind you I'm not saying the phone won't have custom roms its just they will all be based off of Samsung releases. If you don't believe me take a look at all Samsung android released so far and where the I 9000 is currently at right now)

Hi everyone,
I just switched from an iPhone 4 to an S4 and so far the experience has been great, however, I wanted to know if there's a way to run 'Pure Android' on it.
From what I THINK I know, Samsung's version of android has a bunch of pre-installed crap. Call me crazy but this bothers me, I just want a clean OS, and that's something I liked about iOS. I don't know if it has any other limitations, I haven't gotten that far into it yet, except from the home dock being locked.
Anyway, I'm a complete Android noob, but I can follow clear instructions.
Is it even possible to do what I'm after? Is there a clean, safe and fast way of doing it for somebody like me that doesn't know much about these things?
Also, I don't have access to a PC as I am a mac user.

If you can't wait for the Galaxy S4 Google Edition , why don't you just buy LG Google Nexus 4 instead of Galaxy S4 before that ?

The S4 is still pretty new so development is still picking up, but AOSP roms are supposed to give you that pure android experience. Cyanogenmod (CM), AOKP and others add some great tweaks and settings for further customizations. You can check the Original Android Development for Cyanogenmod and AOKP, but I would suggest you wait a while as things are still being improved. They should get more stable soon and have clean and clear installation methods.
Android differs from iOS in that you get a lot of customization options. Different people have different choices and android can be adapted for anyone. Some like the pure android experience and go for either a Nexus phone, which is pure android, or install an AOSP rom on their non-nexus phone.
Some people like Samsung's Touchwiz while others do not. Other roms add even further customizations, etc. Welcome to android..!
Hi All,
Sorry if this is a really stupid question.
I bought a Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition like 2-3 weeks ago and have been using it ever since. I switched from iPhone to Android and bought the GPE based on many recommendations that the stock OS is better.
But for some reason, I want to experience the features that come on the TouchWiz as well. After a lot of googling and looking around on the forums, I can't seem to find the solution.
Is there anyway to install the TouchWiz interface on my s4 and get all the features that come with the s4 (like Air Gestures, Smart Pause etc) ?
Youll never know until you try. We can flash ge editions to touchwiz but dont know about vice versa..

I tried flashing my Google S4 to stock samsung firmware.
For me I was never able to root the phone using the method for i9505 model. My phone almost got bricked and luckily one of my friends who is a CS major and develops apps for android was able to unbrick it for me.
I don't think a method exists yet, someone needs to work on this...
isnt ur phone like 19500? try using a TW rom from there/
Hello guys, good night, how are you?
I'm currently planning on getting the Galaxy S4 I9505 but I was wondering about some things regarding the model. I'm a little bit new to the Android experience (I only had one smartphone until now, and was the Xperia Mini) and wanted to know if you guys could help me.
I am sorry if I am just at the wrong space and if there are a topic that already cover these questions, I will just read it with no problem.
Let's go:
1. I am tempted to get it transformed to the Google Play Edition, are there any way to transform it "totally", I mean, like if it was bought directly from the Google Play Store, with the original ROM and getting further upgrades via OTA?
2. I saw in some reviews that the App Menu Button on S4 is at the last position at the right side. Can I move it to the center?
3. How big it really is, and is it a problem? Could you guys give me a simple overview regarding it?
4. I saw some news around a new model released by Samsung, which comes equipped with the Snapdragon 800. If there is a way to totally transform the 9505 to the Google Play Edition as original, can we expect the same for this new model, or we can't just say that yet? I am asking this mostly because perhaps it would be best to wait for this new model (but we don't know if Samsung will release an International version), but the possibility to install the Google Play Edition on the 9505 is a huge driver actually, as the pure Android experience seems to be very, very good.
5. How "future proof" is the S4 when talking about games, as it sports a Full HD screen? That screen and the model specs are sure fantastic, but won't a Full HD screen demand much more from the GPU in the future, with newer and heavier games being released? Does it perform well today? By the way, can we change the resolution of the games on Android?
Guys, I appreciate a lot the help, thank you! :good:
Guys, I'm sorry, it seems I just made a mistake and posted a thread in the wrong section, It was meant to be on the Q&A Forum.
Could you guys delete this thread?
Thanks and sorry for the trouble.
Okay so my Note 2 is sold and I am buying the S4 (I9500) tomorrow or the day after, but I was shocked after going to the Development section! There is no Android Rev HD ROM for I9500 but I9505 version is there! Why?
Also more things are available for I9505, but for I9500 very least amount of mods! Since I used ARHD on my Note 2 I never ever used any other ROM, as it was so fluid (never thought Android could be that smooth!) and never went back to stock ROM! And I hate AOSP ROMs, so if I buy I9500 my option is to stay on Stock ROM now or what?
This could well be a deal breaker for me!
The i9500 is only available in cirtain countries and is isn't very favourable to devs because of all its closed source hardware. It's why cm etc find it a lot harder to develop for. You can get really good stock based ROMs such as omega etc but due to its restricted availability you won't get as many devs for them.
Would still be a really good buy though. Give it time, as contracts get cheaper over time there should be more interest in them

Hi,
Welcome to the S4 forum.
Please check out the Help Thread for the S4 in my signature.
Senior Member 123hiten had the i9500, and managed to get hold of a i9505.
You might want to talk to him about how he was able to do that.

Yup, that got to me too, unfortunately i didn't do my homework first by checking the development section. One of the main reasons is the CPU chipset, and the amount of people who own the i9505. First it is easier as i understood to work with the snapdragon than the exynos and also most people which includes developers have the i9505 and the ROMs cant work on both devices because o the chipsets.
Now about lag, you dont need to worry, I am still in stock rom rooted and there is DEFINITELY no such thing as lag....runs smooth as butter, but i was still disappointed in the lack of ROMs which I like to flash for fun.
