While charging and streaming TuneIn radio app through Bluetooth speaker. It's pretty hot though..
Here's mine, ambient temp is 28c. Not charging only TuneIn Radio dreaming on data.
46 degree c now. It's not that bad considering it was 64 earlier when charging and I live in Singapore

That is nothing, my GS2 would get to 80c.
It's the battery I worry about as 25c is peak operation 40c it's already lost half of its life before recharge. The batteries get hot during charge though isn't probably a bad thing because it increases capacity.

This is what i am worried about too. Since the battery are not removable. Hopefully the heat won't cause any damage to the battery. :fingers-crossed:

Batteries are made to withstand much hotter than 40c If it wasn't the case, batteries would just die in ambient temp in some summer countries

It wont do damage to the battery as long as the battery doesn't go over 60c. It just means it'll discharge quicker and you'll have to put it through another cycle. Modern phones have like 2 years of cycles in them in you charge each day before until the life starts to become noticeable that it dropping off. I think I saw something where they're at about 80% after a year of charging per day. At the same time not using the battery is bad for it too..
So tbh I wouldn't worry about it as contracts last 2 years.

Yeh but they discharge quicker as they become hot, usually the battery doesn't get hot on a summers day unless you leave it out in the sun. That is why they die so quickly under heavy use because they get really hot.
I've seen my battery hit 47 degrees. I asked HTC tech support about this. The guy clearly had no idea but went away and asked someone and came back with the answer that, so long as it's below 55, you should be okay. I hope he's right.

get kernel tuner and look at the "battery temperature". Some apps like GSAM takes the processor temperature and not the battery temp.
Or also dial *#*#4636#*#* and go to the battery statistics page. You should see there your real battery temperature. It's kinda strange about you guys reaching 40c on battery temperature as I live in a tropical country and this month is peak of summer season. And I only get like 27c on my battery temperature right now with regular use.

I fully agree with @Terrorantula the problem is at hot temps it consumes battery quicker
i was using my uncle's unit for a while and i reported it doesnt get hot easily, my own unit is different though, its around 40C all the time during ordinary use as well
im worried about both drain and throttling in gaming
now i have a like an OCD about the previous unit
definitly we need to look into this, the funny part my own unit is supposed to consume less since its PVS3 vs PVS2, im even thinking we got it all wrong about PVS maybe the lower PVS is the better one?

DH4?
Dungeon Hunter 4. It's a decent looking game, so I imagine it pushes the phone fairly hard. I've come across times when it has noticeably slowed down. But that may be due more to lack of optimizations for the S600.
It's a gameloft game though, so you know they will try to screw you for money. And that is definitely the case with this game. Really good game, but you gotta be patient.

I get high temps very often, I guess this is the cost of the premium aluminum build.
I'd think the aluminum build would help keep temps lower as it transfers heat more easily. I'm guessing the S600 and the battery combination are the cooker in this one.

When gaming, it gets so hot that it makes me think "this should definitely not be this hot", I would categorize it as "an unusual amount of heat". It makes me afraid I'm going to melt something on the inside haha so I give it a break. I know it's hard to describe temperature over the internet but is yours getting uncomfortably hot?

Mine sometimes gets on the warm side, but the Nexus 10 has safeguards to prevent "dangerous" temps (your CPU clock will downclock in increments of 100MHz until the CPU gets cooler, and then spike back up to 1.7GHz; lowest I've seen it go was 800MHz).
Download Cooltool at play store and set up what you want to show as a floating widget. This is how I monitor my cpu, batt temp, ram, wifi strength etc. This way you can be more accurate in determining wether your device is too hot and if you should be worried.

Mine gets really damn hot as well near the removable cover. I really pondered removing the cover and back and seeing if I can make vents in the back, with a screen, then I can remove that removable cover while gaming. It's most noticeable during Need for Speed most wanted.

It doesn't really bother me, per say, but I'm just worried that its going to mess it up, but at any rate good to know it's "normal"

Mine does that too. I have noticed that the case is starting to warp where the heat is most concentrated... Just to the left side by the power button. Between the power button and the camera. Almost like some glue came off and the casing is separating...

That's not good
I was using mines for google talk video chat and it got really hot. I checked the temps and it was at 91F.
Ok I did a test again and it went up to 105F. All this just by video chatting. Thats not normal!
Mines getting hot too just an hour of browsing the web and its extremely warm.

Why do you think that? It's perfectly normal for a chipset like this.
Its not just the top part thats hot like it should be. By holding it with my hands on the side you can feel the heat.

If you blast through the battery in a few hours with 3D gaming or the like the battery will get warm, too (40-50°C).
it was only like 20 minutes. I'm not saying the device getting warm isnt normal. I know that it is. However the first device i had did not get as hot as this.
The N10 is thin and very powerful so heat might be more noticeable. As long as it's "only" getting warm and not slowing down/stuttering in this state, there's nothing to worry about.
lol thats kinda the problem. the video keeps stuttering and freezing and so does the game....
everyone should be undervolting the nexus 10
this device can't even run at stock speeds for extended lengths of time without throttling due to high temperature...
it's easy to test, just run StabilityTest (search google play) and run the Classic Test... you'll eventually see your CPU throttle down from 1700MHz (mine goes down to 1400MHz every so often... i'd probably go down even more if i hadn't undervolted it)
therefore, undervolting it will help it run at stock speeds for longer
I noticed mine heating up for the first time. Don't play many games at the moment. Heated up quite a bit between camera and buttons just like others have mentioned. I was playing ingress when I first noticed. Also when I was just using browser to the ingress/Intel page. I was thinking it had to do with GPS but after reading other comments I guess CPU was working hard refreshing page.

Mine hasn't gotten to hot.
Those reporting this problem are probably a minority of all nexus 4 owners.

Yes the phone does get hot sometimes especially after 10-15 mins of continuously browsing the web on 3G+ or 3G and after 15-20 mins on wifi.. But that's for stock 4.2.2 and 4.3. After undervolting and underclocking the device using custom kernels and ROMs the phone does not get very hot.. It's between 37-40 even after playing games like nova 3 and nfs mw for an hour if you hold the phone with your bare hands and it obviously depends on your configuration.

Thin glassy phone + powerfull cpu = heat Nothing to worry about.
It gets hot, at least on stock firmware, although my definition of hot might be more sensitive than others. I don't know what it would be like talking on the phone for an hour with it getting hot next to your face, although I haven't done that. I have to use custom rom and underclock the cpu a bit, so it's not an really issue anymore. I probably will get flamed for this, but I don't recommend this device to you if you don't like phones getting hot. But I guess lots of these newer flagship phones that has thin plastic casing probably gets hot too.
With normal usage the phone doesn't get too hot or anything. If you are fond of overclocking and disabling thermal throttle you will get pretty high temperature's. Around 70 degrees celcius.
It get's hot as any other phone but because it has got a glass back you feel the heat better.

It didn't feel warm at all after undervolting and limiting heat using Trickster Mod (and has been yundervolted for the past 3 months).
Before that it could sometimes get really hot though.

Yes it gets very hot but the thing is you can still use it without getting very hot if you play games then yes it will get hot.

Is your phone undervolted and temprature limited?
My temprature never goes over 40 degrees celsius, and feels rather cold most of the time.
Even with rather intensive games like NFS Most Wanted
This phone will not burn you. There isn't a real reason to consider the heat a problem. The temperature of the phone is regulated by the kernel, if it gets too hot the kernel takes measures to reduce the amount of heat being produced. This is a non issue.
Before I swap this thing out, I just wanted to poll you guys and see what the general concencus is.
I'm leaning towards "that's just how it is" after seeing Pocket Lints review that actually called it hot, not warm, but hot.
I have a Note 2 now and doing the same things, replying to forum post emails and browsing around, on WIFI no less, barely gets warm. G2 on the other hand becomes a heating pad...from top to bottom.

How I mention already before in other posts. That is a build in feature of the phone. It is an automatic hand warmer. Specially useful in the winter time.

Mind blowing...
The only time mine gets warm, (never hot) is after some graphic intensive gaming or Qi charging for a prolonged period (Nokia DT-900)
My Droid MAXX HD was a nice hand warmer though.

If it's running "hot" and you've already checked to make sure no apps have gone rogue, then I would definitely return it for another. We have 2 G2's bought from different parts of CA and neither have heat issues.
Hot means its eating battery too. Wouldn't be shocked if you got one from the bottom of the speed bin.

Or it could just mean the phone doesn't dissipate heat very well. I've noticed the screen in particular feeling warmer than I'm used to after some casual usage, but nothing that alarms me.
Have heard some people having heat and throttling issues with heavy graphical applications. However, it has seemed to be coming from the T-Mobile variants. I haven't heard a vzw user complain (yet)

Yeah no issues here either. and get an app that reads batt. temp at least if ur gonna compare heat levels. Mine never gets above 100 F. my s4 only got to about 96 on heavy usage. And i just returned a Moto x cause it climbed to the highest ive seen a phone, 117.

I truly believe these issues belong to people who came from older phones and are not well educated on how to efficiently use a smart phone. They load their phones with garbage apps and let it all run in the background while running game or streaming video in the foreground. They have a smoking fast phone that can run it all at once, but they are the first to cry and blame the phone when the battery drains fast or the phone gets hot.
Mine doesn't even get warm, let alone hot.

Replacement gets just as hot. I highly doubt I got 2 bad phones, tho I can't get GPS working on the new one. Went back to the Note 2...barely warm. I am surprised by the amount of you that are saying it doesn't get warm @ all though. I think I'm just more sensitive to heat and have a lower tolerance threshold than most of you. Mine was getting warm from the start. Thought it was lack of SIM, put that in and made some adjustments and its getting pretty darn hot... Am I alone on this?
When I first got it and put it on the fast charger and was playing with it. I noticed same thing it felt really warm even after i had it off the charger, but today I have not experienced the same. I have been using it pretty regularly but have not had it on the charger or played any games (at work) so I will report back once I do

Good to know I'm not alone. Good thing I got this at BB. If it's just a small percentage maybe I can just swap it out. It feels about 100 degrees + right now. So I'm using my tablet. I don't want to unlock bootloader until I know for sure.

Wanted to let everyone know it does cool down a lot after charging to 100%. You will receive it at about 35% and it gets hot fast. Idk why, even with SIM... It adjusts though and can't wait for a recovery to root!

I always wondered why my ear glowed the the dark after using my phone.
@Fantach read up on SARS levels on phones. It also makes the area of the body warm.
I plugged mine in with the Turbo charger when I got it (was at 43%) and did all the downloading and updating apps. It felt pretty hot, so I checked it with Gsam battery and it was 118 degrees. That's hotter than my M9 gets doing the same thing, but the M9 stays hot longer.
After it reached 100% (which was pretty fast), it cooled down pretty quick... It also didn't take too long to get back down to 70% (maybe 3 hours). Standby time is pretty good, but SOT seems to drain the battery pretty quick. But this is a new phone (basically a new ROM flash) and will settle in a few days and I expect to see better battery stats.

Heat is 100% fine. And Motorola Nexus 6 was a lot lower than iPhone.... Like myself and 2 other guys said. It's like the phone adjusts. It gets very hot AT FIRST, then it drastically cools down. Did an Antutu and it didn't even heat up. I swear, heat isn't an issue.

Mine got hot today as well. It was downloading my apps. A little more past 100 apps from the Play Store. It's not a constant issue since I have been using the MXP
I've had this phone for 3 days and it has not calmed down. Still gets hot and this screen destroys battery time. It has nice standby but when the screen is a battery hog. The temps get high with any real usage. My Nexus 6 has been much better with temps and battery. Wondering if it's a bad faulty batch or if this is the processor/screen.
It's a shame because this phone is a dream besides all that. But I am suspect to keeping this with the overheat and battery drain.

Everybody knows the snapdragon 810 runs too hot, and quick charging doesn't help. But with this year's hot summer it's getting to a point where I can barely use my phone because it's throttling and what's worse, it can't even charge correctly because the battery is too hot. It's just crazy, it's topping off at 300mA with a battery at 39°C, and if I put the phone in the fridge it's charging at 2.8A again.
So my question is: how do you guys cool it down? I can't be the only one in this situation. I'm to the point where I could try a gentle hack like a USB powered fridge you could put under the case, or something similarly ridiculous.
Any ideas?

Time your charging to your commute, with a vent-mounted clip, AC blasting it. I've done that with my Note4 "optimizing" apps, even while charging, phone's ice cube cold.
Also, charging any Lithium battery under high temperatures shortens its lifespan. Not a big deal with a removable battery, but with the 6P you want to avoid that as much as you can.
Funny, I did that with the note 4 too (did nobody tell you that flashing while driving is dangerous? ^^)
The thing is now I commute by bike. Anyway, I charge the n6p at least twice a day (sigh) so that would still be a problem.
Also, I forgot to mention it but of course the loss of longevity associated with overheating is what worries me most.
To be honest i never recognized this and the lifetime is for me not a killer feature anymore,
i know ill buy every two years a new phone (even if i try not to ).
Its so hot in your room?
Well I'm definitely not buying a phone to keep it more than a year / a year and a half either. But the thing is a hot battery may die on you very quickly. My note 4 battery died after 8 months (quick charge and QI charge cooked it). But it was removable...
And it's not *that* hot in here, but you can reach 30°C inside so it's fairly easy to get a 40°C battery.
I usually keep my (naked) 6P on a slate or marble surface while it's charging, so that the good conductivity and high thermal capacity of the surface completely absorbs the generated heat. My phones battery is about 30-31° with 28° room temperature.
Also, I rarely charge it with its bundled charger, and use a 1.2A one whenever I'm not in a hurry

I also keep mine on a cool granite floor while doing a full charge and it keeps it a little cooler!
I used a ice pack whenever I wipe the dalvik and cache and the phone has to optimize all my apps. Ice pack keep the back of the phone cold, i avoid resting it on the camera though.. don't want to risk cracking.
Mine gets warm to the touch but you guys really have phones that get so hot you feel you need to actively cool them? That seems, well, a little over the top...

Same here. Just a bit warmer when optimizing apps, but that happens once a month (when I install google updates)
The rest of the time is just a bit warmer, when heavily used.
I've had the 6P for 3 months now and I've experienced zero overheating or the need to cool it down. Does it get warm? Yes when playing games or running many apps like any phone would but I never have to do something like that and go out of my way to bring it down, just let it sit and it cools itself.
I feel your pain. LA has been warm lately and my apt is usually a few degrees warmer than it is outside. My 6P is burning up sometimes.
My solution has been to use a 3D printed phone stand that I have (I'm sure most phone stands would help) and place it front of a small desk fan that I have while it charges. I noticed that it gets most hot when it's charging and lying flat on a surface (desk, my bed, etc.), so I prop it up in the stand and that seems to help.

Well no, I just made up everything so you guys have something to talk about. XDA has been so quiet lately...

Yep, I'm tempted to do that when it's really too hot but I'm afraid it could to as much damage as too much heat. Definitely works though. It's just fun to watch the amps go back up in the Ampere app when the phone is cooling down.
I run the phone in Hexamode (core 6 & 7 offline). Seems to help keep the phone temps lower. No real life performance impact. The reduced number of cores won’t adversely affect performance, as Android, and the majority of its apps, still aren’t optimised, nor demanding enough to need octa-core power. Give it a try!

It all depends on your ambient temperature. Battery capacity is notably reduced over time if it experiences temperatures over 35°C, and since the 6P is not that easy to take apart it is worth finding a solution to keep the battery cool.
The room temperature can easily be over 30°C in most places during summer, therefore it is common for batteries to overheat while charging.

Low temperatures cannot cause any permanent harm to batteries instead. They might temporarily shorten battery life, but it is always good for batteries to be stored in cold environments (they are kept at around 8°C in labs to maximize their endurance).
So no problem from this point of view! just avoid condensation of humidity, which can actually kill your phone

If anyone is worried about heat definitely don't create a backup in TWRP with compression on lol. I have a lot of data so it takes a while and wow does it get hot. I'd imagine thermal throttling is shut off while in twrp so the cpu just blasts away full speed.

Very interesting, thanks! Here in summer we are always between 25 and 35°C, and my battery is at least at 37°C (idle phone in the morning). So I'm pretty much guaranteed to destroy my battery
I live in place where in summer the avg temp is 40°c so it is hot and if i use outdoors i can definetly feel my device is warm even in my pocket
Also whenever it throttles i just keep it untouched for about 5 to 10 mins and it gets relatively cool again
