Riding the motorcycle home tonight I got drenched for about 6 miles... normally not an issue and never has affected my phone in my back pocket before... but for some reason tonight was different...
about a mile from my house my music stopped working and didn't think much of it... but when I pulled into the garage and found my s4 was a bit wetter than normal and would not turn on my concerns grew...
Currently have the entire thing apart.. batter... case... even sim and microSD card out... there was not a lot of visible moisture on the inside... but I did find a few drops on the SD card once removed. Also the phone will not indicate a charge by led or on-screen.
I'm letting it dry out as much and as long as I can... other than just waiting it out... any tips somebody can give me? anything phone specific that I could do to help it turn on? (power+vol up+home something?) and is there a wet indicator on the phone some place? above the SD slot there are 2 brass connectors and a bright pink dot in a hole above them... is that anything unusual?
The phone does have liquid detectors. If you tried to turn on the phone you probably fried it. If you didn't turn on the phone yet leave it in ziploc bag with rice for a few days.
Put it in a jar of dry white rice for 24hrs. It will absorb all the mosture .. one of my friends drop his g3 in tolit and he did that ...booted again...trip..

You beat me to it...damn...
If your daring enough you could try opening the phone and use 99% isopropyl alcohol (technicians alcohol) to clean the parts. Alcohol displaces the water so as you use a small brush (we call thrm acid brushes....not sure what the 'normal' world calls them) use a single ply tissue to absorb the water/alcohol.

I can't make money!) so I'm looking at resurrecting old phones... but I was hoping for a quicker solution... but I'd rather take my time and save my phone... There is no quick solution. Keep it in the bag of rice as suggested, and leave it for at least 24 hours and I would even say try to go well beyond that for as long as you can hold out. Gotta make sure as much moisture as possible gets sucked out before trying to turn her over.

I had a coworker do this.
put it in a bag with the moisture absorbers, silica gel, he left like over night in a zip lock and in the morning it started working again.
I would do the bag of rice or moisture absorbers as others mentioned. The worst thing you can do when a phone gets wet is plug it in or try to turn it on. It seems you tried both. Hope for the best. Next time, if ever there is one, if you see your phone is wet, quickly dry it up and take it apart as much as you can. Kill any power going to it (ie. remove the battery immediately). Then place it in a bag with rice or other moisture absorbers. I would leave it a day or two. Make sure it's fully dry. If you are brave, take a torx bit to it and open it up. Make sure everything is dry inside. Put it back together once it's dry and try to power it on. Most cases this will work. I hope it works for you. Sadly it's on the heels of the leaked image of the waterproof S4.

Because the sim is too small? Just line up the gold contacts. I was able to get the microSIM working in my old captivate which takes a standard sized SIM just by carefully lining it up.

Could also go to a local AT&T store and have them swap you to a full-sized SIM for a few days, if they're willing to work with you. Some reseller stores (non-corporate) may charge a nominal fee for the card. Keep in mind that once they deactivate a SIM card, it's toast.
But as the others have said, electricity to a wet device is typically fatal, so keep the battery and charger out as long as you can. As for the red/pink indicator: your warranty is now void. I've heard of ways to "bleach" the indicator, but I'd imagine that might be against XDA rules to even speak about. Also, check out some of the disassembly vids out there, they may be helpful in getting the water out or finding more indicators. *shrug*

See that pink dot? That means the phone got wet... it should be white.
Trust me, I know. I dunked a brand new 32gb S4 into the pool on the day it was released and had to buy a brand new one at full price later the same day. Most expensive upgrade ever.

That "trick" is pretty well known by the manufacturers. It may get by people at the store but the phone sent back to Samsung can be checked with Orthotolidine and show evidence of chlorine from residual sodium hypochlorite it will be billed to the original customer. Since it's obvious fraud further (legal) action may be taken so be warned before trying these "tricks".
according to the tmobile site, there should be a sticker somewhere in the back of the phone, and red/pink means water, white means normal

Actually, not a LOL at all (well maybe a chuckle), but it is a well known practice to avid motorcyclists to keep a few Ziploc baggies with them for such uses. I use to ride with a regular Garmin GPS mounted on my bars (before Smart phone days) and a Ziploc baggy saved it many times...and still let me use it at the same time. They save wallets, phones, and anything electronic small enough to fit in them.

Im super bummed. I dropped mine in the toilet about 6 hours ago. I was half asleep so all I did was put it in rice. I started googling and saw to turn it off an take the battery out. I just tried to turn it on and all it does is pulsate. I have a bad feeling I ruined my phone......and no insurance

I've had my myTouch for about a month now and have been lurking around the forums for about the same amount of time. With adequate research, I've been able to successfully root, install and run my phone with Maxismo's HERO rom. Successfully meaning have done all that can be with a 4GB class 2 SDHC.
Now to the title. Yesterday morning after a quick McDonalds run, a friend and I decided to post and enjoy our 600 calorie breakfast in the car while I had Pandora running on my Magic through the car audio jack. To no surprise, friend decides that it is a good idea to slide my phone off the armrest, onto the cupholder where a half-filled cup of McD's orange juice parked itself with no cover.. I blame the lady at the drive-thru for not giving us straws. It was in there for a good 5 seconds.
A **** load of used Kleenex's later, I examined the phone and found that the water-damage indicator was still solid white. Aside from the apparent stickier feel, everything seemed fine.. Until I got home. A couple hours later, I reached for my phone to find that it was vibrating. No call, no vmail, not even a text from homegirl to see how my phone was doing. I had tried all the "phone-drying" methods, from Dust-Off to submerging your phone into a bowl of uncooked rice and I still sit here writing this, with my month-old myTouch dancing around my desk like it was happy to see me.
My first question is, has anybody encountered such a problem? If so, has anyone devised a way to remedy this? Second, I have PHP through T-Mobile (phone insurance for those overseas).. Should I just un-root, suck it up and pay the $130 deductible?
I met up with homegirl later on that night and yes, she was happily myTouched.
I shall await replies if any. Thanks for reading.
does the phone still work besides that. cuz if you are going to pay the deductible, i say just report it stolen and pay the fee to get a new one and use the water damaged one as a back up to flash test roms. the only reason you would unroot it and return it is if you are going through warranty, but it would fail, because though the indicator is still white, they open it up and check for water damage there, so you would still have to pay an out of warranty fee, which is like 400 when I had to return my mytouch for warranty purposes.
Just out of curiosity, where is the water indicator?
Also you should leave the phone submerged (cover off and battery off) in rice or packs of silica if you kept those from packaging of electronics for about 2 days. The longer the better. Then see if the phone still works.

Water level indicator is on the lower right hand corner of the battery compartment. It's a round white sticker.
Phone was left (battery and cover off) in a bowl of rice as I mentioned in my post. I think it's the dried up sugar stuck on the board that's causing the phone to act up.. Gives a whole new meaning to "sweet phone".

Phone is still running fine aside from being stuck on vibrate.. The volume button seems to be the only other that's acting up but it's sporadic. If I do end up keeping the phone I'll open it up and have a look-see. I imagine it isn't gonna be a walk in the park like my N95.
Good point on the warranty, my friend who works for T-Mobile said I could return it at her store though.. Will they crack it open later on and possibly bill me?

they send it to their return center and there they open it up. it happened to me on my sidekick. My trackball on it wasn't working so i returned it to warranty. They billed me 3 months later because they said it was an out of warranty product because they found water damage on the inside of the phone and the water damage indicator was still white. I didn't even know that it had water damage when I returned it. It must have gotten water in it when my hands were wet or when I had it in the rain.
Have you tried to turn off the vibrate feature from the settings to see if that turned off the vibrations?
All stickied up is what your volume button is. That is why it is vibrating and why the volume is acting up. The trick would be to get the sticky orange juice out from under your volume rocker. My menu button was sticking so I used a tiny piece of paper to stick in the very tiny gap between button and phone, maybe you will be able to dislodge the sticky stuff. Its a thought.
But insurance wise I think I'd say I lost it at Mcdonalds (snicker).

Had the same thing happen with cranberry and vodka. pull the battery. Get the assembly manual off of the forum. Dissasemble and clean any and all boards with 90% isoproyl alcohol and a childs soft bristle tooth brush. Do not blow on the boards to dry them as condensation can occur. Just use a fan at room temperature. Make sure you don't get a bunch of alcohol in places it won't come out of (speakers, Microphones, any type of button, USE COMMON SENSE), and only use as much as absolutely necesary. I did mine about 24 hours after it happened and it is still working 3 months later. Sugar will kill it eventualy if left inside so it needs to come out. I have had not one single issue since iI cleaned mine. BE VERY GENTLE. There are a total of FOUR liquid indicators on the unit. One in the battery compartment, and two you cant see, and yet another behind the tab for holding a lanyard. If you need better instructions shoot me an e-mail. [email protected]

Haha. I tried it out with a bunch of post-its and it seems to have alleviated the volume issue slightly. I think I do have to open it up though coz it's still acting up. Thanks for the tips.. Maybe I should blame it on a McDonalds staff member.

it's a good thing you have insurance then and you told them that you "lost" it or it was "stolen"
Thankfully it was a quick dip. Took it out and blow dried it. After some Initial problems everything seems to be working. Was doing some weird things at first. Think I can expect any issues down the road?
How long did you wait before you put the battery in? It may seem dry, but there may have been moisture on the inside..
Honestly I didn't wait too long because I was expecting a really important call and there was no moisture under the screen. I think the case helped protect it a bit. I'm replying to this thread with my phone so sofar so good. *fingers crossed*
Was there piss and poo in the toilet? That will corrode it. However, I do plan on throwing my Hero in the toilet as soon as the Nexus One comes out for Sprint

my girl was "helping" by doing the laundry and my hero made it thru the washer and half way thru the dryer i dryed it out for a few days got stuck on the boot screen ,wiped and flashed a new rom to it and it works perfect this was last month and still no problems .... knock on wood
I did the EXACT same thing. Dropped in in the toilet, snapped it out really quickly and yanked the battery out and let it dry for about 24 hours. Plugged it in and turned it on and it worked perfectly.... for about 2 weeks. After a couple weeks, it wouldn't power on. All that it would do is the orange indicator light would come on when I plugged it in. The water indicator strip on the battery and the one underneath the battery weren't even red but when I took it to a sprint store that had a tech, they showed me that there was corrosion on part of the board when they took it apart and the indicator on the board was solid red. If you can, I would recommend taking it apart further and trying to dry it out even deeper. That's what caused the ultimate demise of mine.

I would do this after completely dissasembling every layer of the phone and carefully drying it all out with a blow dryer.
All it takes is 1 drop of moisture, in one of the many layers of these complicated devices, to cause a short and cripple the phone.
i was at a bar i didn't even want to be at in a small town in colorado.
at first i just stared at it for 10 seconds thinking "at this point i should just leave it there because the damage is done"
then all of a sudden it started goign crazy with lights and "samsung vibrant" flashing everywhere on the screen, so i decided to dive in and save it. then i violently washed it with hotwater under the sink and only after washing my hands did i finally open it and take out the battery (at this point, the screen shown brightly with "samsung vibrant).
3 hours later, hoping it had dried completely, i put the battery in and again it came to life with the samsung vibrant text. i quickly took the battery out.
i jsut tried it again and it wont turn on at all. is it over?

You shouldn't have done that, the phone was still wet. When you did that you fried your phone. If you would have put your phone in a bag of rice or let it dry out for a few days then it might have been ok. Hope you have insurance.
Yeah, I always heard that half the time, if you power it off and let it dry, and make sure it's dry before trying to power it on again, you can luck out.

when you responded, my heart dropped and then i ran over to see if it would start again one more time (i plugged it into the charger) and i pressed the on button and it showed it was charging. i'm goign to leave it alone now in a bag of rice like you said. but i dont know if i can wait 3 days.... i never learn my lesson

My son left his ipod nano in his pants pocket. It got washed. I dried it and did the rice thing for 2-3 days (can't remember how many). Charged it up. Just like new.
The moral of the story? If you can't wait 3 days to see if it has been salvaged, you don't deserve a new phone...

Uh, dude, it would not be a software problem... If it doesn't boot up its a hardware problem.
Just make sure its sitting nicely covered in the dry rice....wait...you did use dry rice right? Not cooked rice??? lol kidding...

we'll see. the green charging light gives me hope. i will definitely not pay full price for a new one. this was $99 through costco-- which is what a phone should cost.
Don't over cook the rice. Stir-fry it with some egg, carrots, scallions, peas, and barbecued pork. Everything should be okay.

This is why the data is so expensive in America. The companies need to get back the money they lost on the phone.
The phone might be fried since you didn't wait to turn it off. I've read the bag of rice will work. Next time wait until you phone is dry and just reroute you calls with Google Voice. I'd still try the rice too.

To clarify a little... when you drop the phone in water, the FIRST thing you do is take out the battery and sim card. Then you let it dry COMPLETLY, this takes days, not hours. Like said above, rice does good, you put it in a zip lock, take out the air and seal it.. leave for AT LEAST 3 days so the rice can absorb the moisture, THEN you try to turn it on for the first time. If you try turning it on when there is moisture you will fry the phone, water conducts electricity and brings power where there is not supposed to be and burns circuits, so by putting the battery and attempt to turn it on prematurely, you are killing it causing short circuits internally.

If you try turning it on when there is moisture you will fry the phone, water conducts electricity and brings power where there is not supposed to be and burns circuits, so by putting the battery and attempt to turn it on prematurely, you are killing it causing short circuits internally.

+1 and ty , I just read through this post and wondered when someone would point out the OP already turned it on to "check" it after being in the water.
Time to order a replacement, even if it does for some magical reason power on that phone is going to be issue city.
So I do a lot of reading on this forum but rarely post.
Last night, my phone fell out of my hands while I was sitting outside the hottub and went right into it. It was like how something falls to the bottom of the ocean in a movie. I got it out right away dried it off, took out the battery and sd card and looked at it.
It seemed that no water got into the system at all. The phone works just as it did when before the dive. The only thing that is touchy is the charger now, but oh well.

My friend dropped his Incredible in tea. He thought the same thing, but now, the phone reboots itself when it gets warm at all, and if it gets cold, the touchscreen becomes unresponsive. It was stupid to turn it back on. You should have immediately stuck it in dry rice and never turned it on, as that can prevent damage from happening.
Yeah, regardless of manufacturer/model, never turn a dunked phone on until you're 100% sure it's as dry as you can possibly get it.
Pull the battery and SD card, then shove the whole mess into a bag of white rice for AT LEAST 24 hours, more if you can. The longer it sits in the rice with no power, the more likely it is to survive the dunking.

Anyone know of any cell phone shops that have a wet phone recovery service?
I would place the phone inside a small pressure vessel and pull a deep vacuum for 15-20 mins (or until I archived 1000µm). Then break the vacuum with dry nitrogen. Repeat 3x's.
This is the method for pulling moisture out of refrigeration systems and it does work well.
I would think a small phone shop could easily get $50 a pop to save someones phone.

I would worry about the screen in a vacuum.
If it were my phone though, I would completely disassemble it and make sure I got all of the water out that way, maybe hit it with some 99% isypropal to help get any water out from under chips and in tight places, and let it dry for a few days in silica beads.
A hairdryer is a horrible idea. It can't pull the water out. On the contrary, it's more likely to force the water into worse places.

I know that, but there are people that will blindly follow anything they read on these boards, and I've seen a hairdryer suggested before.

Rice is a good option and works well, but the small silica packets that are used as desiccant work even better and can be purchased very cheaply.
Putting your phone in some sort of vacuum or near-vacuum is probably a bad idea because the hardware was likely not designed to withstand such conditions.

Ok guys update.
So its been what a couple of days now, and my phone is working pretty good. all the main things work. the only thing that is a little touchy is the charger, and it keeps saying usb connected, but i can live with that.
I uses to work at a sign shop and my bosses kids were terrible about throwing phones in water so he found the little pink water detector strips so I know if you do that you can put it on and trade out your phone

Anyways, I just want to say Samsung FTW because this phone has just been amazing in so many ways. Abilities to super customize in any way, shape and form, awesome screen...I was VERY hesitant on buying an all touch screen phone. Coming from a Blackberry Tour I was very use to a real keyboard and buttons. Yes this phone has it's up's and downs, but all in all the pros really out weigh the cons.
I'm in absolute NO rush to get a new phone any time soon. I love my Fassy

Saturday(8/3/13) morning I was out by my pool with my five year old daughter and her friend that spent the night making sure they were "ok". I hadn't planned on going swimming but after a while I got bored and hot and decided I was going in. I was wearing my "gym shorts" and didn't mind if they got wet and typically do Not put my phone in the pocket of these shorts except for this particular morning I did have it in there for whatever reason and needless to say my phone was in the pool for over 5 minutes before I noticed. DAMNIT!!! I am really depressed over this as I had tons of photos/emails/texts/passwords/other info stored on it. Basically that phone had been an essential part of my life since I had it and had everything set up JUST the way I want it. I put it in rice as soon as I could but with very little hope. I left it in the rice for over 24 hours before trying to put it back together and of course, No power! =( I figured the warranty was voided so I took it apart to see if I could see visible damage. I didn't notice anything but a little dirt, put it back together and tried it again. It did not come on, But I noticed after a few seconds about the middle of the screen and middle of back started getting warm to the touch. Doesn't this mean power is coming from Somewhere? Is there Any hope here? Thanks for Any information and for reading. Sorry this is so long but I had to tell the story to "someone" and I feel too stupid to tell anyone in real life.
If it still has the ability to use power, the screen may be the only thing damaged, assuming all the chipsets are fine.

Most people keep it in rice longer than 24 hours. Sometimes several days is necessary. You could also try pulling it apart and submerging the parts in as near pure isopropyl alcohol as you can find. Then, hit it with a blow dryer for a while. Isopropyl evaporates at a much higher rate than water, it displaces any water that might be there, and it does not corrode parts. Then, put it back in the rice for a day or so to make sure all of the moisture is gone. Of course, it might already be to late, but it might be worth trying.

Rule of thumb is 3 days in rice. The obove comment is also viable. I personally have had success with using an oven at 200f for about 4 hours, but you have to disassemble the entire device.
It seems that you screwed the pooch by trying to turn it on after 24 hours.

Thanks all for the info. I took the phone apart, cleaned each piece with 91% alcohol + toothbrush, then put it back in rice (sealed) until this afternoon. I have just taken the parts out and put the phone back together. I plugged it in nothing. I put the battery in, pushed power and still nothing.(I didn't really expect anything just small smidgen of hope). When I put battery in and push power button and leave it a few seconds though, it starts getting pretty warm to the right of the rear camera. The battery is not warm at all, does this mean battery is fried? And if there is heat being generated should I still have any hope? It seems if it was totally "dead" no heat would be generated?
It means that it is getting power, but something fried...

I doubt its your battery man. If the phone is heating up, it could only do that if it was drawing power. The heat also means ur CPU has to be working too, i think your screen is shot.
I think you're probably right about screen. I guess I should give up but I just got a new 2-yr contract when I bought the phone (on release day). I really just want to get all my photos(including ones of my now 9 month old, most of her pics were on there). I've never done anything like this to a phone so never bothered to get insurance or anything. Bet I will now!
You could have the screen replaced. Might be a bit pricey, but it's better than spending anywhere from 400 to 650 for a whole new device.

I dropped my phone off at a cell phone repair shop. They called today and said "water damage repair was unsucessful" is there still a chance replacing lcd screen may work?

Something could have fried when it was dropped into the water. It could be anything from the battery to the motherboard or even the daughterboard. Also insurance wont help. It doesn't cover water damage. You could try a new battery because it could be just that. You should also let it in rice for a few days. Take it apart as much as you feel comfortable with and put it baggy of rice
