Remember that web browser that was found hiding in the Nook's search function? It's time could be nigh. According to a leaked memo acquired by TechCrunch, Barnes & Nobel will be updating the Nook Simple Touch and Simple Touch with Glowlight with an email app, web browser and an updated store next month. The update will reportedly be sent over the air starting on June 1st and rolling out to all devices in the following weeks. The idea isn't too far fetched -- the Simple Touch is running a skinned version of Android. Nook owners not willing to wait for the official patch can always root the device of course, which comes with some peripheral advantages. Check out TechCrunch for a look the full memo.

I doubt it. The hardware is really old now and there are severe storage limitations.

Interesting; I wonder if they've got a newer kernel as well, or just tweeked there existing ancient one.

Very interesting, can't wait for the update!
Anyway I was hoping for the store, I would like to install apps without root, but I guess it's never going to happen!

I would doubt that we could get the Play store as someone noted that the new design of it does not work with our venerable Nooks.
Still it is a nice update, not sure if I would get it though as mine is rooted etc and thus it might prevent it from downloading.

This Nook is over a year old now (isn't it?)... There can't be that many tablet manufacturers still willing to perform hefty developments on hardware that old. So web browser and email client announcement will be just that. And no more... no kernel, no other android support. I guess the 'updated store' is their B&N book store, not any kind of android store.
(I omit other bug fixes and reading-centric improvements)
(and as someone who has rooted and set up their nook just nicely, I don't think I'll care about this update, unless it does anything useful for me).

It would be lovely have a official service to send and parse content to nooks, a kind of "Send to Nook" from web browsers and smart phones.

That's what I'm hoping. Even if it just lets you import epubs from email I'd be good with that, it'd allow things like News Beamer and the like to work, as well as adding new sideloaded books without plugging into a computer which is honestly the thing I miss most from the rooted version since I accidentally triggered a reset to stock
==EDIT== some way to import books without plugging in, ability to edit the screensaver banner (had it as an "if found, contact" statement), and a persistent 1 px battery bar at the bottom of the screen and they'd cover all the root features I personally usedwith any regularity

A web browser might mean the device will get official multi-touch support.
The increase from 1.2.1 to 1.5.0 would suggest a bunch of under the hood stuff.

looks more like its showing off future smartphone and ppc phone technology. cant really tell
why couldn't it be wm7?
If they want to have an operating system that can compete with apple's then this looks promising to me.

Thanks for the link. Interesting read so far. I'm not done with the Blog.
I'm just wondering though. It says that the camera will be used to calcullate certain activities (which may include gestures such as shake, twist, etc.) instead of using gyroscopes and accelerometers.
While it is too early to tell, it seems that this approach (already attempted with current devices in field) would have a negative impact on battery drain since the camera would have to be "always on" in order to comprehend your movements.
Secondly, what if someone came up with a camera hack? Could you imagine having your camera phone hacked and just being on all the time, displaying your personal life to some freak? I don't know if that is possible or not, but, it would be kinda scarry for me.
The article contradicts itself in a few areas; such as saying scroll bars will be done away with, then later stating that the scroll bars can be dynamically resized. LOL.
Still, it's fun for me to read about forthcoming technology - vaporware or not.

In theory, yes. It will most likely not need different hardware than it needs today.
From the looks of it, WM7 will be a lot more powerful that WM6 and require a lot more processing power. I'm sure there are a few HTC devices which will be able to run it, but I don't think I waoul want to run it on my Touch since it can barely handle WM6.
I don't think there's been any official announcement about the date of release, but end of 2008 or beginning of 2009 sound like the right time frame for Microsoft to roll this out. http://htcsource.com

It will probably hit on a weekend to avoid their support getting inundated with initial update calls. A weekend gives people a chance to figure out the issues themselves and not bother support needlessly and if still a problem then they can phone on the Monday.
I believe that is the usual tactic. So maybe we will get it this weekend. You never know!
Good News!!
ASUS had real good jobs in these few updates.
They paid musch focus on Table this time.
What will 3.2 give us? it's mainly for small screen tablets.

besides the improvements to allow more sizes of tablets (smaller ones) the Android Developer site lists the following:
Compatibility zoom for fixed-sized apps
Android 3.2 introduces a new compatibility zoom mode that gives users a new way to view fixed-sized apps on larger devices. The new mode provides a pixel-scaled alternative to the standard UI stretching for apps that are not designed to run on larger screen sizes, such as on tablets. The new mode is accessible to users from a menu icon in the system bar, for apps that need compatibility support.
Media sync from SD card
On devices that support an SD card, users can now load media files directly from the SD card to apps that use them. A system facility makes the files accessible to apps from the system media store.
But that's just what comes with stock android 3.2. Asus no doubt will have added some fixes and improvements of their own (everyone hopes one such improvement will be Netflix compatibility).
bug fixes i hope

I fully agree with that
I think 3.2 will should fix the lack of fps in rotate 90 & 180. Motorola Xoom [3.1] , Galaxy tab 10.1 [3.1] have got this same low fps problem like TF. This is honeycomb problem.... and 3.2 on Xoom fixed it... I hope that update will fix some problem and UI will be smoothh I wanna netfix too Better battery life? Fix of SoD? Fix somme issuses with copy/paste when u using custom screen keyboard. Add pinch to zoom on touchpad ? -> we can use 2 fingers to scroll in menu or internet browser ...and why we can't pinch to zoom? Asus please add it
With 3.2 Nova Xoom version will be working on TF

I'm hoping it activates the size down function that turns the tablet into a 7" one for portability.
I just want the battery stats to be recorded and reported correctly. Would love to know what takes up battery life on standby...
Ever since the new update browser and Opera has been crashing a lot more. It's pretty annoying. Hopefully that gets fixed too but it may be a TF thing.

Stop reading any old tripe you read on the internet. The HTC thing isn't MALWARE. Thats just silly sensationalist reporting. You out to punish the tech idiots reporting that crap by going elsewhere for your tech news.
As for this, i'm guessing it's something like Android Lost, where you can send a push notification from the web (after logging on with your Google account) and your tablet will enable GPS or Wifi and work out where it is and respond back.
Try Android Lost to see what it's all about... It's unlikely to be a permanent tracker, more an on-request location service.

I agree. The mobile phone insurance company Asurian had /has an app called Mobile Recovery. Once you log in securely from a PC you can activate your phones GPS for its location. You can also set off an alarm or wipe it remotely.

When an application can cause DAMAGE, in the HTC case, STOLEN PERSONAL INFORMATION, then its MALWARE, pure and simple, When its fixed so that only HTC can get the logs of what you type, do, use, your location, then it becomes SPYWARE. No need to try and convince me otherwise because of the amount and specifics of the data collected and inability to opt-out.
Nice try however.

Plenty of applications in the world have the ability to cause damage. To call every single one of them malware is plain stupid. yeah well to be honest i couldnt wait for the acer push and flashed the civato flexreaper rom......ater using the stock 1.103 leak.....and boy was i amazed....to all others ....seriously forget acer ota's the MOST RECENT ota from acer didnt even include the acer ring.....but civato's rom DOES , im with flexreaper /civato all the way from now.
i skiped the ots mainly and i have NO NO NO NO NO NO NO ISSUES!
no drops in wifi
no sod
no boot reloop
the audio is 300% better sounding! its like goin from mono-£5-radio to a sony-3d-theater system
and have the acer ring.....IN GOLD!
i mean seriously civato managed to incorporate this feature into his rom, but acer couldnt incorporate the acer ring themselves??!!!! wtf. simply.

Well I will be darned it does have folders, props to you (and I hit the thanks button too). I hadn't done the ICS folders on my phone in forever and forgot to drag and drop shotcuts, not Widgets.
So other than the Acer ring I saw on the A200 at best buy I don't feel like anything is missing, and I really don't know why I would want to have that ring cluttering my clean home screen anyways.
My sig states what I am on: Acer A500 - Rooted Stock 4.0.3 - rooted to add USB 3G support, and VPN support
No drugs at the moment, atleast that i can remember.
I completely agree. The acer ring is just bloat quite frankly. It's a failed attempt to differentiate a OS that is just fine when stock.
I don't see why people even expected them to include the ring, it was new for the new tabs, and the early ICS leak we had didn't have it in it, its all marketing, release a new feature that is nothing but I candy. Don't get me wrong its cool, but its nothing super over the top.

"Couldn't" doesn't have a damn thing to do with it. Of course they COULD include it, if they wanted to. It's not there because they've made a BUSINESS DECISION to only make their Ring app available to their newer devices, from the A200 upwards.
After all, it makes little corporate sense to update your older stuff to the same feature set as your new stuff. Where would be the incentive to buy the new stuff?
they probably left it out, since our tablet didnt come with it to begin with, good props to them too, not forcing bloatware onto a product we have owned for close to a year
THere has been issues with the ring on the A200. It also wasn't a widely accepted thing, unfortunatly it decreases over all performance and memory availability and performance users simply don't use it. Folders are just easier.

THe A200 was released later, but it really isn't newer, just a price point economical version of the A500 with soem htigns removed. I guess the ring was meant to composate.

Kingroot did not work.
The lack of root was the reason I sold my Zenpad. Great device and specs, very smooth and quick responsive display. But no Nougat in sight AND no custom ROMs meant I was stuck with ASUS's custom UI for life. That wouldn't be too bad if they actually updated it to Nougat and gave me multiwindows.
We need somebody that's able root from the source code given from asus's site

No progress as far as I know, but I messaged ASUS about the nougat update and they confirmed it would be released at the end of the 2nd quarter. I asked about the Z500KL, but I guess the Z500M will get it as well.
I can't find any bootloader's that works with the p027 tablet. The installed Asus launcher, keyboard, and just about every other thing loaded on this tablet is crap. But........ If you ditch all that crap and get Nova launcher, new font packs and Gboard ( Google's new keyboard) you will find your experience much improved. It will give you alot of the functionality and speeds of nougat. Force stop and disable all the bloatware, ditch the Facebook and Twitter apps which are battery and memory hogs and get Metal for Facebook. This fix will give you a tablet that's on par with the Pixel C. Still have yet to figure out the Quick charge issues with this tablet.

Force stop and disable all the bloatware, ditch the Facebook and Twitter apps which are battery and memory hogs and get Metal for Facebook. This fix will give you a tablet that's on par with the Pixel C. Still have yet to figure out the Quick charge issues with this tablet.

What Quick charge issues? I use my Google pixel charger and it works flawlessly
I emailed Asus support and was told there won't be any updates. Which just adds to the confusion.
For those of you who don't like the launcher - there are lots out there on the Play Store you can try. I have Action Launcher running on mine .. works fine.
