[Q] Camera issue! Will not focus - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I have the i9505 (QUALCOMM in case I got the number wrong) and my camera fails to focus. I tap the screen and the square just turns red. It does not focus by itself either when moving the camera around to distant and close objects. I searched and found some threads on the S3 and captivate but there were no answers so I'm hoping someone here has the technical knowledge for this. I am stock and have only lightly dropped the phone once during the short time I've had it. Also, upon opening the camera app there is a mechanical "tick" noise that occurs near the rear camera. I tried recording a video as well and it did not focus at all and just took one horrible blurry video. I did look at the settings and reset the camera app. This sucks.

Looks like a hardware issue to me... exchange it if you're within the return period, send it in if you aren't.

Hi,
Silly question:
Have you removed the plastic lens cover?

^^This.
Here's is what you're looking for. If you look closely, you can see the plastic protector with a hole in it for the lens. If that is partially covering your lens, that could be your issue. I have yet to remove it on this phone.

Camera not focussing
I have the exact same issue, and i have removed the plastic..
Anybody please help

Have you guys tried a 3rd party camera app? The Samsung one sometimes has an issue focusing for no apparent reason for me.
If that doesn't work then it does seem like a hardware issue.

Hey guys just a quick update. No, I haven't removed the plastic cover but I don't see how that is an issue since the camera was perfectly fine before as well. I have also tried 3rd party apps and same issue. Anyway, I contacted T-Mobile and after doing their troubleshooting (soft reset, hard reset, complete data wipe [cringe]) they are going to replace the phone, which I am extremely happy about. On their website it says they charge $20 to replace the phone, but the rep I called said she will waive the fee for me. Good result in my opinion.
If any of you continue to have this problem try calling your carrier and hopefully they will resolve the issue accordingly.
P.S. please recall that I mentioned the phone made a "tick" or "click" mechanical noise near the rear camera upon opening the camera app which I do not believe is something normal and led myself to believe that it was not a software issue.

Also, upon further inspection of what is making the ticking noise, when I open the camera app and I look at the rear camera, I can see it move slightly backwards (towards the front hearing piece) and that is what makes the noise. Can anyone inspect their rear camera to see if it moves back right when opening the camera app? (I know it's tricky to touch the screen while looking at the rear of phone)

wierd ticking noise when shaking the phone

Today i noticed a wierd ticking noise when shaking my phone . It's not that loud , it's around the phone-speaker and i suspect some kind of spring from the slide , because when i hold the phone firmly in the speaker area the noise dissapears , also when sliding the screen(during the slide. when completly opened it reappears) the noise deissapear , and when i push a bit the screen in the direction that it is (forcing it to stay closed or open).
Does anyone else has this problem ? Because i don't thing that warranty will consider this as a problem , and change my phone.
The phone is not having any hardware problems , but the ticking noise just annoys me .
I believe this is just the slide mechanism.
What are you doing shaking your phone anyway?
Hmm I think I found this problem discussed b4.
The sound came from some part under the optical pad, and as I know, every X1 is.
a normal sound coming from the sliding mechanism.
please check my thread

Yes we all hear it, it is normal, not something broken or loose.
thanks for sharing , i also suspected the slide mecanism , but i didn't know it this sound is normal . now i feel better knowing that there is nothing wrong with my phone , but is still pretty iritating , hearing it sometimes when using the phone (voice call)
LOL=) It's the pen!
If the sound originates from the top of the phone, most definitely it's the camera; more specifically the auto focus mechanism. From what I read here on XDA, it would seem that it's not a Q.C. problem and it's normal for it to "rattle", "click", "tick" or whatever else you can make sense of it.
I've had a few devices from just about every manufacturer, and I've noticed the sound you're describing in about 30% of my devices. Some manufacturers are worse than others - like Motorola - but I've never seen a link between the "rattle" and phone malfunction. In my opinion, it's perfectly normal - best not to think about it

what i was hearing was the sliding mechanism, if you hold the 2 parts (bottom and top) and press them (the gap between them will become almost zero) the sound will disappear

i don't think so, the pen is in a fixed location, and it exactly fits there so i don't think it can move in the compartment.
Hi,
I also have this ticking noise, and has some one posted before, I found out it comes from small wheels between the screen and keyboard of the sliding mechanism.
I post here some pics that show them:

}
The two wheels in each side on back of the screen.
One wheel in more detail:
These wheels I believe they should run on the sides of the keyboard as I show on next picture.
I think the problem is that this wheels are loose and flying in spite of running on top of the keyboard. I also note that my screen is not totally stable, specially when open, and is a bit loose in relation to the X1 body.
I believe that this wheels should be there for stabilizing the screen and to give a smoother sliding effect, which I find not very the case of my X1.
I also think it's not normal to put wheels that are never grounded (as far as I can see on my X1) and only are there for making noise.
An easy way to check and patch the problem is to put two or three slices of paper stacked over the sides of the keyboard (on the red lines of last picture). In this way you fill the gap between the wheels and the keyboard body and the noise will stop. Besides the slide is smoother and screen is more stable.
I think this is a major fabrication issue, because apparently, at least I couldn't find anyone that doesn't have this problem.
Anyone doesn't have this issue on X1?
I believe that som X1's have the wheelrattle, but not all that rattle are because of the wheels.
There's an example on how my phone sounds after the second repair of the batterycompartment crack.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=482022
Guys!
Its just the sound of the sort-of-free volume/camera buttons
If you just touch both during shacking, you will make sure that there is no tick sound
I guess
nu it's the wheels guiding the screen. if you press the screen up and down , you will see that the noise dissapears. it's as clear as possible explained in the pictures above

My noise does not dissappear when putting pressure on the wheels..
Listen to my X1 rattle here and see if you have the same rattle.

small hole next to the camera - what is it?

Hi!
if anyone wondered what are that little hole marked on the photograph?
Found in all versions Defy / Defy +
and it is not a second microphone

i hadnt noticed it till you put up this topic! :S
does anyone know what that is? now even i'm curious!lol
now i am curious TOO....
I gees it's the 2nd microphone, which is used for noise canceling.
Don't know what it is but it's not the noise canceling mic. That is located under the screw on the top right (when looking at the back with the battery cover off), there is actually a hole in the battery cover for noise cancellation mic.
Well its right in the middle of the phone, maybe its used during manufacturing?
I always thought it was the motion sensor myself.
Hole for a HW reset ???
Hi all,
While using my new defy+ with a CM10 rom, it was seriously blocked, without any capability to recover it, no USB, no boot, nothing could wake it up again
I decided to disassemble it, and found out that behind this hole was a kind of button
Isn't it a HW reset button ?
this question because once reassembled, my Defy booted again, came up to life again
Any idea, confirmation about this ?
regards and thank's to all of your contributions
Well it might be 18months late but It looks like a tiny external antenna socket or test connection, presumably used for setup and testing by factory/repair depot, judging by this picture:
Its a microphone used to record sounds while taking videos.
Try tapping the hole when recording videos and tapping the hole at the bottom.of the phone and see when you hear the tappjng noise

Did you try tapping it though?
I did try tapping it and it isn't the microphone! with the back cover removed and in record video mode I tapped the middle hole and the hole to the right, clearly the mic is on the right hand side just under the screw (where the hole in the back cover is, oddly enough) It would make no sense to have a mic made of brass and with no hole in the back cover for it to receive sounds.
On the picture above you can even see the mic has a little orange rubber seal around it, it's the square rubber just below the round orange rubber screw hole.
Yes i did try tapping it. I did it long ago to see what it was
hi, this hole is for water detector.
The detector is only a small paper which change color in contact with water.

[SOLVED] Faulty proximity sensor - hardware fix

Caution: not-so-skilled people ask for help to more skilled friends !!!
How a proximity sensor works:
Basically there is a modulated infrared emitter and a correspondent IR receiver. When the modulated light is reaching the receiver, the sensor will become active.
In the mobile phones, the structure is built like in the below drawing. When an object is close enough, the reflected modulated light will be captured by the sensor and it will activate it.

The problem in some phones is that for various reasons the sensor is hyper-sensitive. This should be translated to sensor becoming active when an outside object is even fairly far from the glass surface. But the problem is exactly the glass surface. The sensor is so sensitive it will catch even the refracted light from the glass (remember optics studied in school ?). Some of the light emitted by the emitter will be refracted from the very glass body back to the receiver.
The temporary fix was to "rub" the sensor area while in a call and suddenly the sensor was acting normally. This was caused by the fact that all that reflected light (from the finger) was supersaturating the sensor so, when obstacle was removed, the sensor was no longer hyper-sensitive, at least until the next power-up (next call).
The solution I tested (and apparently it works) is to create some sort of a light attenuator to place in front of the proximity sensor, but under the glass. Well .. the idea came to me while fixing an old remote control .
I'll let the pictures below to speak (thousand words for each ... pretty long story ) ... click on thumbnails for full 1200x800 size.
In case you are applying the mod, please leave a word here, so me (and others) will know the outcome.
I had not even a proximity misfire since I implemented this (roughly 48 ours ago) .

Very cool!
The proximity sensor is actually a part of the motherboard, interesting.
So in my case that my proximity sensor is broken and my LED is permanently on, the only way to fix it would be getting a new motheborad, in another words a new phone. Right?

A surprising fix for Proximity sensor problems

Hi there,
Quickly after installing a new screen protector sheet on my Motorola Defy, I discovered that it is causing my proximity sensor to be next to useless.
By peeling off the screen protector off the proximity sensor I verified the source of the problem. (The sensor worked properly without the protector sheet on it.)
I used a black permanent marker to mark out the proximity sensor area, to cut out a little window through the protector sheet with a knife.
Drum roll please, we arrive to the part where Newton got an apple to his head and Archimedes ran naked out of his house yelling "Eureka!",
The black permanent marker fixed the problem. once I painted over the proximity sensor (On the screen protector sheet of course!!), It started working fine again. Yeah. Weird.
Yes, Yes, I know, this is life changing information for many of us who just couldn't hang up after dialing the wrong phone number because of sensor problems...

wow.. epic fail on the part of the screen protector maker. did you bring this to their attention? good thing it has an easy, albeit, chinsy fix!
Long ago, I discovered something similar on the myTouch 3G Slide. That phone has a small rubber box cover over the proximity sensor, with a small hole for the sensor to peek through. When I changed the flex ribbon cable, the sensor wasn't working anymore. I eventually realized that on the old cable, there was that small rubber box over the sensor, & the new cable didn't have that. I put the rubber box over the sensor, & now it worked again. It seems that if the sensor is left wide open, it won't work right. I notice that on newer phones, the sensor is usually encased in its own little box in the housing. I guess they need most light around it blocked off in order to work right.

This is a well known fix for the proximity sensor issues with aftermarket replacement iPhone glass that doesn't have dark enough tint over the sensor.. (cheap import products not oem) good to know it works in this case too.

Proximity Sensor Issues fix

Hi all, had to post coz this produced such an excellent result for me. I'd had the same trouble many of us have had with screen still working in call leading to random button pressing or holding the phone away from ur ear and people not being able to hear u. I'd used the Proximity recalibrator and it worked at first but I had to keep decreasing the high/low values till it was right down to 3 on low 4 on high and even with this the screen only turned off intermittently. So search on YouTube for a disassembly video and watch it, take ur battery, sd and sim card out, pop out ur GPS antenna take out the 5 screws, take out ur volume button and take care of the volume button PCB as u take the case off. Clean the phone with a fine dry brush all round the sensor, ear speaker and front speaker grill. Before u put it back together gently and carefully bend the GPS contacts out a little to get better contact with the antenna. I put it back together and my proximity sensor is like new! I had to adjust Proximity calibrator to 28 low/ 29 high. Our DHD's are getting old now and I had plenty of crud in mine, bending the GPS contacts out has also produced excellent results with a far quicker fix even indoors. So my DHD will live on for a while longer, hope this helps u too.
Yep i do agree that this is a great fix, having done this myself.
Just make sure before doing anything to your DHD you set yourself up so you know which screws go where after you remove them. Also Lift the Sticker with the IMEI number on carefully if you rip it off forcefully you'll snap the volume ribbon.
It does work it also allows you to clean the speakers too and the camera len too.
