Newb Guide To Root - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I replied to a thread with what's below so i figured i would make a thread for anyone else who is kinda slow like me! This was my very FIRST root i have ever done! I'm quit proud of myself! Seems like a long process but once you get into recovery its a cake walk! I was on MDL build to start,
Make a folder on your desktop and drag all files into it. Make sure your drivers are up to date. I put everything on my external sd card. Other than odin..lol.
Odin V3.07 (Download)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2189539
Recovery (TWRP) Dowload tar (Ablsolute Best Recovery)
http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/jfltespr (I did the one with most downloads obviously)
Force Rom 1.0 (Force Rom 1.1 update...i had to used the mirror one on the update)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2261943
Shaggy Kernel (GONNA NEED IT FOR WIFI)
http://www.shabbypenguin.com/OUDstuf...ble-spr-TW.zip
UnZip Odin and open up the app inside. Once opened uncheck autoreboot and anything else that's checked. Select PDA and click on it and select the tar file from above. once you get the green pass unplug your phone from pc and take out the battery. Put battery back in press and hold the VOLUME UP, HOME, AND POWER buttons at the same time or as i do volume up and home and make sure i got those nice and pushed then i will hold power. Once you see the blue writing in top left hand corner LET GO OF ALL THE BUTTONS!! This will take you to the TWRP Recovery. Once in recovery hit install then hit storage close to the top and select your micro sd. In there you will flash the Force Rom 1.0. After that flash the update 1.1. When those are done flash the shaggy kernel. Reboot and you done. I love how easy these guys have made it for us!!!!!

This works with both mdc and mdl phones?

Not sure about MDC. But you can do system update prior to get to MDL from what I know.

Yes that is correct. There is full guide at the link below for getting rooted with that update.

Can't update after soft brick recover

So I just recovered from a softbrick using the Heimdall method. I'm stoked because I'm no longer bricked but I cannot flash anything via Odin now, even after I have re-installed my Samsung USB drivers. It always gets to SetupCS connection or something like that and just stays there. Is there something I'm missing?
What driver is on your system? Is it the fascinate or the nexus s? If you're coming back to some level of stock from a GB rom you might still have the GB (nexus s) drivers. You might have to reload the froyo fascinate drivers for odin to work.

as long as you get the yellow "com" with a number underneath the box in odin, drivers are not the issue.......try re-downloading the odin package and then flashing it again

That was my thought as well but its doing it with 3 different Odin packages. This is where I get lost but am I supposed to put the atlas.v2.2 pit in with everything now? I'm at a loss I guess. Phone is functional on ED03 currently but I'm stuck at stock it seems...

the atlas 2.2 pit file goes in the "PIT" section at the same time as the tar.md5 file goes in the "PDA" section and re-partition checked......when those two files are placed in their respective slots and re-partition is checked, THEN you hit start on odin. If that doesn't work, place this file on the root of your SD card and rename it "update" but without the quotation marks lol: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=556632&d=1301538910 Once you do that, boot in the stock blue recovery using the 3 finger method and select "apply SDcard/update.zip" and let me know what happens
Many thanks to you sir. I'm at work currently but ill try this out as soon as I get home.

Alright so I just tried adding the PIT, repartition checked, and added my ODIN package, but still had the same problem. About to install the CWM All file you gave me and try that out.
*edit* Well something just happened. My SD card just got corrupted and I cant even format it now. What the hell is going on?!
*edit 2* OK so the SD card issue fixed itself. Just had to hit format a billion times. I'm now running an OTA update to my phone from Verizon as I had to go all the way back to DI09.
*edit 3* I'm now sitting on ED04 fully stock but away from my computer. I will try again once I get home later on tonight. Just out of curiousity... has anyone else other than kidserious and the other guy had this problem or have experience in dealing with it?
So checking in again. I am still freezing at "SetupConnection..." in Odin. No luck at all with flashing the CWM ALL file as "update". I'm completely out of options at this point. Help?

Let me rack my brain and think........I will get back to you.
RESOLVED
Alright so I finally figured out my own way around this. It was actually fairly simple and I'm a bit ashamed I didn't think to try this earlier.
Hopefully this will be of assistance for any future issues. Thanks Kidserious for your help.
*edit* So I just found some instructions for uninstalling the Heimdall driver from your phone. I'm booting up after a fresh flash of DI01 and hopefully this will work. I'm guessing that even though I'm installing the samsung usb drivers back to my computer, they arn't reaching my phone, and this may be the issue I've been facing. *pauses for a bit to test theory* Yep. That was all it was. Sorry for taking up so much room on here... just FYI to everyone though. If you soft brick and recover via Heimdall you HAVE TO UNINSTALL THE HEIMDALL DRIVER OR NOTHING WILL WORK.
FML. So it didnt work as I had planed. After I flashed my edify rom I samsung bootlooped. And Odin still isnt working for me.
I'm giving up for tonight. Functioning on DI01 stock ): at least it works...
Alright so I'm fairly certain I've narrowed it down to one fix but I seem not to be able to fix it. I need to install the samsunflg husband drover back to my phone and uninstall the heimdall driver. I've tried it twice and or hasn't worked either time
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
---actually resolved----
Sorry for spamming this thread everyone, even though I've really been the only person posting in it anyways.
I have found my fix. So I was never able to fully uninstall the Heimdall drivers so Odin wouldn't recognize my phone and would hang at "Initalization."
So I took a weird strategy and actually purposely soft bricked my phone. Scary to do but the outcome was well worth it. Here is what I did.
1.) Puropsely soft bricked phone
2.) Put it in to download mode
3.) Went to device manager
4.) Contrary from Heimdall Uninstall instructions phone will now show up under the general usb devices areas. Find this area, expand, and right click on Samsung Composite USB Device.
5.) Go through the options of manually picking the usb driver you want to use.
6.) Install chosen standard samsung USB driver. You may get many options in the list but pick the Digitally Certified one.
7.) I didnt unplug the phone after I flashed the new driver so open up Odin and flash your DI01 Stock Recovery with Atlas v2.2 PIT and Repartition checked.
8.) Once finished phone will be on DI09 fully bloated stock and should work with Odin for any further flashes.
*edit* It appears as if you need to flash the samsung driver to phone evrytime you want to flash something via Odin.

Need to delete media hub and voice talk but how?

Ok, I believe these items are bogging down my phone badly. All this garbage that sprint puts on is killing my phone. I am having an issue with it as it freezes and pops up the bottom menu and keeps making quick little vibrations and freezes quickly, and then let's me get back into it. I think it's this software that is doing it, because it seems that there items keep restarting themselves. I want them gone. What do I have to do to let me take over my phone. I hear it may need to be rooted, but if it does, how does a novice do it on this 4g epic? Thanks in advance guys.
Mike
Well without rooting you can go to manage applications, then aall, then find the needed applications and choose clear data. It wont remove them but it will fix the restarting issues.

Well currently rooting is sort of hard...
First get drivers for the epic:
32 bit: http://firon.net/xda/Samsung_Mobile_Driver_V1.3.800_For_SPH-d700_Epic_4G.zip
64 bit: http://firon.net/xda/usb_drivers_GalaxyS_x64.zip
After you install these you need to get a program called Odin.
Odin: http://www.multiupload.com/S65EJFWRHE
Extract Odin to a folder called something like root for example. (Make sure you extract all of the files)
Next you need to download CWM 5 and put it in the same folder as Odin.
CWM5: http://drockstar.devphone.org/EpicTools/cwm-5.0.2.7-epic4g.tar.md5
Now get this kernel and put it in the same folder as Odin.
Mkasick kernel: http://www.club.cc.cmu.edu/~mkasick/android/kernel-GB-3a.tar.md5
After downloading those and putting them in the same folder as Odin, run Odin as administrator.
Now you have to put that kernel tar in the PDA slot in Odin.
Now you need to pull the battery from your phone then put it back in.
Now turn hold one on your phone's keyboard while holding the power button until you get an android Guy with a shovel.
Now plug your Epic in to the computer and make sure only auto reboot is checked in Odin. Click start.
Once your phone turns back on, repeat the Odin process with the cwm tar.
This time after your phone boots, you need to put a file on the SD card.
Root zip: http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
Now turn your phone off off. Then hold volume down, camera and post until you see cwm recovery. In this menu use the volume buttons to navigate and the camera button to select.
Choose choose zip from SD card, now choose select zip, then choose the su zip you downloaded and choose yes. When this is done, you can reboot your phone.
Now you are rooted and can use an all like titanium from the market to remove stock apps.
Hope this helped

Now all I need is a super easy one step rooted stock like GB with all the fix's done with everything working as it should! Yup am too lazy to experiment with GB at it's current stages!

[HOW TO:]N8013 Users: Use Odin to Install the New U.S. 4.1.2 JB ROM [UPDATED: 16JAN]

This thread is no longer valid or necessary other than as a guide on how to use Odin. U.S. users that are bone stock should be able to apply the update via OTA or Kies. If anyone's having an issue they can install the U.S. JB ROM by using Odin to manually replace their current U.S. ROM with a completely new copy of the U.S. JB ROM.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Basically what you’re doing is replacing your current PDA (MD5) file with the U.S. 4.1.2 version that's just been released.
To install a ROM it's easiest to use desktop Odin. You can download Odin 1.85 here…
https://www.google.com/search?q=odin+1.85&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-Address&ie=&oe=
Make sure you’ve got Kies installed on your PC because it installs the Windows drivers necessary for Odin to see your device.
Download the full and complete U.S. 4.1.2 JB ROM here…
http://hotfile.com/dl/189276711/f83...GT-N8013-XAR-N8013UEUCMA3-1357740396.zip.html
Unzip the file you downloaded. After it's extracted you should see an MD5 file. That's what you're going to install. Right-click on the Odin EXE file you downloaded and run it as administrator.
Put your device in to “download mode” by turning it off and then restarting it by pressing the power and volume down buttons at the same time. You should see an “are you sure?” message from Samsung. Accept it and your device is now in download mode.
Connect your device to your PC via USB. If the connection’s successful it should look like this…
Next, click on the PDA button and locate the file you extracted and then click start...
You’ll see the update’s progress in the message box in Odin and via a progress bar on your device. When Odin signal’s it’s finished disconnect your device and it will finish installing the new files.
That's it. Your N8013 is now running a fresh install of 4.1.2.
These are the directions I followed - many thanks!!
So, it's confirmed that it won't affect the flash counter for sure? I'm thinking of using the All-Share Cast dongle in the future and it exhibits some strange behavior if the flash counter hasn't been reset...
Will this work on n8000?
Sent from my GT-N8000 using xda app-developers app
Yes it will work the same for all note models but you need to make sure have the firmware for that particular model.
No it will not change your count, you can install stock roms of any regions as many times you want it will not change the count.
Your count will change when you root it or install a custom rom you can easily reset the flash counter
It seemed so simple...followed instructions to the tee. I just got status 7 error. Failed when I tried to flash update.zip from external SD card. Now s note is fc every second. I might have to go return my tablet tomorrow any ideas or help? I am not new to flashing roms but I haven't ever seen this.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
Flashing OTA is always tricky, think you were flashing a zip file I would not recomend it.
Also make sure the OTA is for the same version an region as your rom is otherwise it will give you errors
Did you download the N8010XXALI3 version or the N8010XXALGC version as there are two German versions in that list.
Not sure if that would make a difference.
No need to return, go back into recovery and clear the cache. Then reinstall the update. Boot into your tab, it might be a bit laggy at first but let it sit for about 5 minutes DON'T TOUCH IT. Reboot the tab and it should be fine. I had a similar issue, my tab is now flying along. For any fc you get, go into the app and clear all the stored data. IF it continues uninstall and reinstall. Remember, you are going from ICS to Jelly Bean, some apps act differently in Jelly Bean.
Riki
Just to be safe I assume I will be ok if I am rooted and dont have stock recovery. I will just have to reroot. Correct?
After you flash the German stock ICS with Odin you will get back the stock recovery.
When the official UK one comes out will it be easy to change to that if needed?
Yes. 2 options :
Get back to the stock ics for your region, and wait for samsung ota or
Download jb stock fw for your region from sammobile and flash with odin
Edit: assuming that you are from UK.
Mine seemed to take a few minutrs. After the progress bar on the tablet seemed to stop, I unplugged and held the power button down to reboot. Holding down the power button while holding volume up will eventually boot you into what is called recovery mode. You then select what you want to do by clicking vol up or down to select then push power button to proceed.
Let it finish... even if you have to wait 30 min
Well, I stopped the fc by clearing s note data. Thanks for the help. I'm still stuck on ics though. When I try to flash update.zip it fails to get build.prop sector 7 or something. I transferred it around a little before installing - it could be corrupted. I am going to re download it directly onto my tablet and try again. Thanks everyone for your help, I really appreciate it.
What do you think happened that made it not work at first and what did you do to fix it? I want to keep the first post updated so people don't brick their devices or have heart attacks during the process.
Will it be possible to download JB update it directly to my tablet without an external SD card?
Cannot setup phone (unfortunately, setting has stopped).
Hello, today i wanted to flash a new rom on my galaxy s4, rooted it a while ago but hadn't flashed a rom. Went to Rom Manager and was gonna do a backup but it was giving me an error so I could not do the backup. Since I had saved all my pictures and everything on dropbox I just went ahead and went to recovery mode and wiped my data so I could flash the new rom. When I tried to wipe the cache partition it just rebooted my phone. When the phone started up I get all the usual setup from TouchWiz. I started setting it all up as usual but when I get to the final screen (learn about key features) I hit finish and then i get the "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped." not allowing me to continue on to my home screen. So as of right now my phone is basically a paper weight because I can not to anything. Has anyone else encountered this ? Is there a work around ? Will appreciate all help.
P.s. Sorry if there is already a post about this, I just don't frequent this page very often and don't quite understand how all the search functions and all that work.
First off what firmware are you on. MDL, mf3, mj6, mj9? To check go to settings - more - about device and check build number. If it is mf3 than you need to go to the general section and read how to odin the md5 file same as other build numbers. You just have to take your time and read.
Do you have safestrap or how do you flash roms? Because if you have safestrap than your on mf3.. If you can install Roms without safestrap than you must be on MDL.
Never use rom manage to flash a rom. As stated, we need to know the firmware you're on to help you.
I didnt use rom manager to flash the rom, I was trying to create a backup of my stock rom with it. I went to recovery mode to try and flash the rom.
I dont have safestrap, and I hadn't installed any roms on my S4 yet, this was going to be the first time. I use to flash rome on my S2 a while back and was gonna do it for the first time with my S4 through recovery mode. Sorry if im not really giving you key information, I just don't know it. I learned the basics of flashing roms and that was about it. Obviously the wrong thing to do because I might have just rendered my phone useless.
Yes I can boot into download mode. Yes, I have clockworkmod installed. No I could not make a backup, It kept crashing and would not allow me.
I would try to odin the mdl firmware in download mode. You can get the firmware at sammobile.com. You'll have to register but it's free. You'll download a zip file. Use 7-zip to extract the .tar.md5 file from it. Use that in odin, PDA.
You can try this guide. It's not for the s4 but all the steps are the same. Just don't use any files except for Odin linked in it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26056924
Did everything with Odin and downloaded the file I needed but when I try to flash with Odin it says Fail. And at the messages you get at the bottom it says "Cant open the serial (COM) port."
Check to see if there are any popups that you have to allow before a connection can be made. Sometimes they appear behind the ODIN screen (on the PC). Also, make sure you have the proper drivers installed.
If you can get to clockwork, just copy a new rom to your SD card and flash it. You'll be up and running in 5 minutes.
[Q] Stupid Noob bricked his Sprint GS4 SPH-720
I had a rooted stock rom MF9 w Philz Touch Recovery 6 and wanted to upgrade to the new MK2 firmware. So I used Odin to flash the tar file and it passed. I rebooted and froze on the boot screen for about 60 seconds and then started up and said " Android Upgrade Completed". Wifi did not work so I figured it was the Kernel. So stupid me flashed KT kernel using Philz hoping it would fix my wifi issues. I powered down then up and the boot screen came on and my screen went black.. The phone works and can receive calls but I have a black screen. Then I tried to be very smart by using Odin torevert back to the MF9 firmware but no luck. Philz is still intact
How can get my sreen working again or worst case factory reset
You have to Odin back to stock you'll lose your data but it'll fix it find a mf9 tar
You can use android screen emulate on your desktop if you have the android sdk installed.
First off, you can't go back to MF9 since you are already on MK2. Download the full MK2 tar file to use with odin. Then pull the battery from your phone to ensure you are truly powered off since you can tell if your screen isn't working. Next press and hold volume down and then power till your phone boots to the download mode menu. If your screen is still blank but it gave you the power on vibrate then press volume up. This should put you into download/odin mode. Next, fire up odin with administrator privileges and plug your phone into the computer. If odin recognizes it you successfully entered download mode with a blank screen. Load the MK2 tar file in the pda slot in odin and when ready hit the start button. Hopefully you will get a pass when the software install completes. Next reboot the phone and see if it works. If the screen is still blank after a successful odin then it is hardware related and take it to Sprint.
Oi I'm posting horribly!
Let me be more concise. If you have no screen you can use the ASM tool to access your display via usb-pc/laptop and control it from there. I had to reflash an old droid after a bad firmware flash left me with no display and this was one of my few choices.
Otherwise you can use ADB to issue commands to your phone DOS style if you want to take the time to learn that stuff.
I can get into download mode so i do know the screen does work to some capacity. I never took the ota to mja so im assuming i don't have the mja knox bootloader. can someone send me a link to the tar file or zip and does it include the firmware and rom without knox? i am a noob to this so i kinda understand some of the things you guys are saying but not sure how to do this. I do know the kt kernel somehow messed me up.
Sorry, misread the original post, thought you did the full upgrade to mk2. All you should have to do is flash or odin the stock recovery or to be safe, odin the full mf9 tar to make sure you start out with a clean slate.
