Nexus 4 or save for GE S4 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok guys I have been having this debate in my head for about a week to get the nexus 4. Now they announced a GE S4 and im all messed up lol. I really have no experiebce with pure android and am really interested in getting into the dev community. Do I shell out around 700 (taxes and shipping) for the s4 or go for the nexus 4? Just looking for some peoples input and thanks in advance.

I am currently a Nexus 4 owner. I just ordered a 16GB AT&T Galaxy S4 for $175 which I should get sometime next week. As soon as I get it I plan to sell it for $550-$600. I will then use this money to justify buying the Galaxy S4 Google Edition. I will then also sell my Nexus 4 for $250 or so.
I love the Nexus 4 but there is no question that the Galaxy S4 GE is better. I love the beautiful screen, the high def camera, the big screen, the feel in your hand, and I even like having a physical home button. That being said I don't think I would pay $650 for the phone straight out but by using my upgrade and selling it I can justify spending that much money.
If you do decide to get the Nexus 4 I am selling mine which I have only had for a few months. It's in brand new condition and I have the original box and all. Let me know if you are interested...

Yes, my upgrade was not until September but I called AT&T retention center and was asking them how much it would be to cancel my line and they offered to upgrade me early to the GS4 for $175.

What's the difference between an at&t gs4 and the GE if you just flash a custom ROM on the at&t one?

Maybe nothing but I am not taking that chance. There is no confirmation that the AT&T phone and the Google Edition phone will have the same hardware. It seems more likely that the GE phone will be like the TMobile AT&T phone which is slightly different. I am sure there will probably be ports to the Google Edition but I want a phone that was made to run stock android and phone that is supported directly by Google with the bootloader already unlocked.

AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000

ATT apps are now available from the Android market for the AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000. Guess the phone will be available from ATT shortly.
Message I got when I downloaded ATT Messaging app:
This app is compatible with some of your devices.

Yeah but who cares? AT&T versions are loaded with bloatware, they never have the phone in white (e.g. SG2), locked down, lack an FM radio and they remove the physical home button. Not worth getting an AT&T phone at all. Save up your pennies and buy an unlocked phone, it isn't that expensive.
I already bought the international version off contract. I'm not about to sign a contract just to get a crippled version of the device. I happen to like the physical Home button and lack of a search button; holding the Menu key has the same effect.
While there are bloatware/crapware issues and the 2 year lock in as clear disadvantages the fact that you can get a phone like the Note for $300 or more less than unlocked is a big plus for many. In addition, you have a much easier return location if you have a problem.
I almost picked up a Note last week but Newegg didn't have any in stock so I delayed my purchase. Given the issues some are reporting with the Note and the fact that any first of a kind phone is likely to have early issues I decided to hold off for a while.
One of my concerns with buying an imported phone is that you have no way of knowing if the phone they ship you was returned by someone else. This, perhaps more than anything else, is giving me pause about buying an imported model so soon after the phone is released.

The Note is not the Galaxy S2 and the AT&T Note version is not released,
so your points are not fact based on the note, you made an ass-umption.
Plus the lack of updates....
Unlocked Galaxy S2 on ATT I had 2 updates in 3 months.
Galaxy Touch on sprint? Desperately needed updates from the getgo...signals cut out all day long: NOTHING. Samsung sent it out. Sprints been sitting on it.
i almost got the galaxy note myself. If its coming to att then I might just wait. I'd love to have a warranty with it. I would also like to be able to play with it before I buy it. I'm just wondering if it does come to att will they let me keep my unlimitedplan from my iPhone.

Have you seen the AT&T ****rocket threads?
Have fun getting throttled after 1 day
As for the "speculation", no USA Sammy android phone has ever had a physical home button. AT&T also usually removes fm radios. But... if you want to pay $300 for a throttled, crippled Note with no ICS coverage for a long long time then have fun!

This is great news. Even for those that plan to or already have imported since Samsung will have a service center presence for the Note in the US.

We understand you trying to justify your recent $800 purchase, but let's try to be a little objective. I'd gladly save $500 on a phone by adding some bloatware or giving up a home button.

The import G-note will most likely have a better look over the att G-note. I just spent $750 on a white G-note n I think it was a good deal. I sold my iphone 4s for $550 n my dell streak for $200. so I really only paid $217 (cost of upgrading to phone 4s) for my G-Note. I do miss the US warrenty n the support if I would have gotten from att. if I done my math right I over paid about $100 for my G-note. But I got a white G-note n 3 to 4 months less waiting.

Wow... some people are taking this kinda personally, lol.
I'm planning to root that sucker and use a custom ROM, plus I've got the grandfathered unlimited data, so I'm psyched AT&T will apparently be offering the Note.
To be honest, if you can flash it and there is good xda dev support, there is no reason not to get a subsidized phone. It's just nice if something goes wrong in the first year to be able to mail it in and get it replaced. I have a service center in town, so Ican just go swap it out.

So then don't act like you're saving $500 when you're not. Buying the AT&T crippled version is for people that are either: 1. on an extremely tight budget 2. retarded.

I won't be saving $500? Ok, $400? I pay less per month than you do with unlimited data and I'll hopefully be paying significantly less than you for this phone. Unless you're planning on changing carriers in the next two years you have no point.

Yes. Having LTE would be nice. Maybe LTE would work better in the SF area. Att 3g sucks in SF. I guess good n cheaper things comes to those that could wait.

How much would you spend?

I'm not going to bother whether you'd still buy one or not...I think i know the answer
I had been leaning HEAVILY toward an ipad mini as my first tablet.
Talk me out of it
I'd prefer to stay with android so I can root and have all my apps and the things I know and love.
However, I just haven't found a form factor that i like. The 16:10 is just too skinny on the 7" IMHO.
Then i found out about this 7.7 and I'd love to have one.
I actually only need the wifi version but that looks harder to come by??
I'm on ATT. On the GSM version, can I just take my sim out and use it for data in the tablet?
Besides those questions, how would you pay for your tablet if you had to purchase it today?
I'd pay the $350 a ipad mini would cost me.
However, the ones I see are $450+

I'm browsing these forums because I'm eying the refurbished Galaxy Tab 7.7 Verizon 4G on eBay for $250... so I'm guessing you can get it for well under $450. Considering returning my Nexus 7 for it...
I saw some wifi only for buy it now or best offer on ebay. Not sure I want to go that route from Taiwan. I wonder how much vzw would charge outright without month to month. I bet if they would have kept the price down this thing would have been hard to keep in stock...

The pictures is this ebay ad show the 6800...
you see the green telephone icon in the lower left??
The 6810 doesnt have that..
"IF" you get the 6800.. then YES, you can move your ATT sim card there and BAM! An exact duplicate of your smart phone and it's features...
including phone calls, receiving phone, send and receive TXT messages and mms.. everything your existing smart phone does.. same phone number..
it all followes your sim card.
I do it and many others on here do it too..
BUT, you cant do it with the 6810 or Verizons version..
they dont have sim card slots... good luck
6810 is wifi.
6800 is wifi+3g
Sch-i815 is VERIZON wifi+LTE
As stated earlier, you can have wifi AND full phone functionality with the 6800 with your at&t sim.
Don't get the i815 unless you have service with Verizon or unless you plan to use it for wifi only. You can only get data service (phone functionality is disabled) with the Verizon i815 if you have a Verizon account on the stock rom only.
If you want to use cyanogenmod or aosp roms please note that our tab shares most of its internal hardware with the international galaxy s2 and international galaxy note, which means full jelly bean butter is not functional until Samsung releases the right source.

I paid $400 for mine... New from Verizon a few months ago and I still think it's worth it. The iPad mini isn't really a consideration for me, even for $50 less.
But I think the 7.7 is pretty close to perfection.
I had p6800 from end of January. Then at the beginning of December, I broke the screen and needed to decide what replacement devicebto take. I liked Ipad Mini for form factor and casing. But ultimatelly the iOS and poor specifications put me off. Nexus 7 3G is nice but the screen is too small. Anything that is 8.9 inch or larger is too large for me. So I bought another p6800. It is significantly better than the original as it does not suffer from yellowish discoloration of the screen which the original had. I think there is still no competition for p6800 out there (if you don't care for high computing / video generating power but you need smallndevice with good /though somehow dark/ screen and battery life).

K

Well, I decided to bite for $250. Versus the Nexus 7 that I have for $200, the extra $50 is worth it to me for the screen alone. I'm not going to be using data so I don't care about Verizon vs. AT&T etc. concerns.
Ahhh. You are tempting me! I'll sleep on it.... 250 really isn't a bad price. I'll probably do it lol!

I thought pretty hard on getting the nexus 10 but I know it would be too big for my first tab. With a 5.3" phone it would be hard to 'just' go to the nexus 7 but i did like how it felt in hand. Advice Please: Changing Carrier / Phone

I am currently changing my family over to T-Mobile and had ordered an HTC One for both my wife and I and we received them yesterday. I activated my wife's phone as well as my daughter's phone but I have not done my phone yet. Honestly, I have said for awhile that I want a Nexus Phone, and since the phone is almost half the cost of the HTC One it helps saving money to be able to get a Nexus 5 when it comes out.
Now here are my questions and hoping you all could help guide me: With Google I/O starting tomorrow should I get the phone now or wait to see what is announced at Google I/O (Though it sounds like the Nexus 5 won't be announced until October / November)? I ordered these phones via phone so can I return this HTC to the T-Mobile store? And since I want to return this and I they already requested my phone number to be transferred should I get the Nexus 4 from T-Mobile or order from Google Play (I have NO IDEA why the same phone is $130 more on T-Mobile but I will look that one up).
Any advice would be very helpful! Thanks!

While there won't be any new/major hardware revisions, it never hurts to wait, especially if it's just a day more.
I'm personally curious if tomorrow is when we'll see the fabled white Nexus 4.

The reason why it's cheaper on the Play store because Google sells them at a loss. More precisely they don't make any profit off the phones at such a low price tag. That's why T-Mobile and perhaps some other retailers will sell them for a higher price to make a few bucks off of it.
Since all Nexus 4 are the same you might as well get one from the Play Store. If anything goes wrong, Google can get you a replacement. It's also much cheaper. It comes unlocked so feel free to use it on any GSM carrier.
I think you should wait and see what happens tomorrow at the I/O conference. It seems though a new Nexus smartphone won't be released until the very end of the year.

Lol. They don't need the money. I'm not really sure why they do it. When the new Nexus 7 tablet comes out this summer they're gonna lose $5-$10 for each device sold.
Another interesting thing is that the Galaxy S4 costs about $237 to make. Buying it without a contract will cost you over $600-$700. Crazy, huh?

They are trying to introduce more people to the play store and android experience, that's why the price is lower. Wait a day and see what happens. But if it comes down to your question about should you return HTC one for the nexus 4, I would. You'll have extra $200 to buy accessories or maybe donate some $$ to charity.

Wait until tomorrow just to see if there will be a storage bump. You can return to tmobile within 14days (30 in CA) as long as you are a new customer, for renewals tmobile no longer has a "cooling off" period so I'm not sure what the process on returns is. Buy from Google. The Samsung S4's BOM (cost of materials) is <$250 now the cost to research/market the phone I find hard to believe would come in at $500 (assuming a $750 unlocked selling price) and yet that is what they want you to believe...my point is Tmo sells the N4 for $130 more because they can and that is what people are used to paying.

That's a contradiction and you don't actually know either way.

So the first article has conjecture and rumor from "analysts". The last 2 are about the nexus 7, a different device, but also say that google is making very little money or selling at cost (which means they aren't losing money and is believable.)
None of the articles have anything to do with you contradicting yourself nor do they have any info from google concerning the cost of the device so...you still contradicted yourself and you still don't know how much money they are/aren't making.

Yep, "we" have known for awhile that these devices only have $200-$300 worth of parts in them and google is using their size to push down prices for devs. Unfortunately it isn't doing anything for the general price of phones, in the US at least, since most people are still on contracts
Google is an advertising company at heart, everything they do is geared towards getting people online 24/7. Hardware is a loss leader

Trade for droid dna?

Would it be wise?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I wouldn't but that's just my opinion.
I would.. 1080p..HTC quality
Yeah, and then sell it and then get another phone (note 2) and or another Nexus...
The DNA does have a higher resale value than the N4.

That is the exact reason why I was thinking to do it actually. This device has always been fun because has got updates first but this time google pretty much screwed us by not pushing the update and postponing it in november. So basically until then we have no advantage over any other high end devices. And it is scary how fast this phone's value is depreciating. Chicago craigslist you will be lucky if you sell for $280 16gb.

I don't see how Google "screwed us" but okay..
4.3 was obviously not ready so they postponed it. I'd rather wait for a rockin stable release than a buggy one.
$280 is only $70 less for a 6 month old phone and that's a pretty darn good resale value if you ask me.
The Nexus still beats other high end phones because of it's price, the lack of crapware / bloatware and the lack of carrier branding.. As an added bonus you get an unmolested version of Android from the 1st boot!
The HTC DNA and the Nexus 4 is quite same internally. I would stick with the N4. Verizon is too expensive.

Stay with the N4. I left Verizon nexus behind because I was giving an iPhone 4s. Less than 1 year, Im back using galaxy nexus. Almost 2 years old it still kicks it with Tue best of them. 4.2.1 all day. Can't say the same for other devices. Google + Galaxy Nexus = Flagship.

One must be blind not to see that the only reason why we didn't get 5.0 update was because google decided to be sammy's *****. What they did instead is announce s4 google edition. I mean seriously, which company announces some competitor's product in its main event of the year? And I am talking sealed box, there is no demand for this device. $280 is $120 drop in value (in usa we pay tax remember). Bloatware is not a problem, root the device remove the bloat you are all good. Anyways just opinions.

You can use dna with any carrier since it comes unlocked out of the box.

I will be purchasing the S4 next week! How do ya'll like it?

I will be selling my S3 + accessories (case, 4 screen protectors and Hyperion 4200mAh extended battery) on eBay and I plan to get like around $300 for all of it. I already have $350 saved up and on the Sprint site (and amazon.com as well) it is listed for $599 so I am good to go once my device sells on eBay!
So... I was just wondering how ya'll like it (especially those who came from the S3)?! How are the pics, do you use all of the TouchWiz features, how does it run, etc.?! What are your favorite mods/themes/ROM/etc. so far for your GS4? I see development is a bit slow, but that is expected since it's only been out for a little over a month. Thanks in advance for all responses/help! Feel free to cover anything else you feel is necessary! :good:

Next Friday or Saturday!
Anyone else?!
I'm coming from the Evo 4g to the S4 (so take it as it is). I am loving this phone. Currently running Kuban.
I'he owned my S4 since day 1 on April 26th and I'm loving this phone.
It's the perfect size for me with its 5'' HD screen, decent battery life, fast everything, its thinness, and the support of the XDA community.
I'm currently on the latest ktoonsez kernel, Crossbreeder mod with frandom module, and the Xposed Framework + Nottach & Tweakbox module and it's smooth, fast, and reliable. Looking very forward to the MEA update.
Thanks for the responses so far guys... Keep em coming!!

There's really not much significantly changed in the 4 vs 3. Not a worthwhile purchase IMO. If you've got money that's burning a hole in your pocket then go ahead and get it.

Well it's only gonna cost me around $300 out of pocket... plan on selling my S3 + accessories for around $300-$350. Sprint has the S4 on their website for $600 (plus taxes it'll probably be around $650).

They said $262 (so precise, I know lol) MAX if it was in excellent condition. I feel like I can get $300-$350 (phone, 4 screen protectors, case with kickstand and Hyperion extended battery) if I find the right buyer.
Ya. What I did was took the $262.50 for the phone and sold my other accessories separate.

Not from Best Buy off contract. That's just Sprint screwing their customers out of money.
