I've only had this phone for 2 weeks and came from the SII. The note seems to have much higher RAM utilization and I don't know why because there is a lot of commonality between the two phones. One thing I am seeing is for example when I multi task and use the browser and then switch between that and Skype. Moments later I switch back to the browser to find that it had closed and I have to reload my web sites. The other instance was today when I was only using a single application (high memory one at that!) which was Google Earth. When I exited Google Earth I could see the home screens blank as the phone had unloaded touchwiz while I was using Google Earth and then I had to wait while TouchWiz was reloaded. Not that impressive and nothing like what the SII was like to use. In this sense the Note is a big step backwards and this could be a bit irritation of this phone.
You are right and you are not the first one to notice.
This one has 3 times the screen of a SII but has the same processor and same memory of the SII.
This device would need a faster processor and 2 gb of memory.
You are probably correct but I don't get the logic...sure there are 3 times as many pixels to move around but that is a processor/GPU issue. The programs in memory are the same size regardless of the pixels so that's the part I don't understand. Will ICS be any better or make things worse in this regard?
Same here but the screen size is worth it, till the note 2 is available.
Home screens are often blank after shadow gun, Skype video chat, google earth. If many apps are being used then you find that when trying to go back to earlier apps then some are shut down, browser often gets shut down if moving between apps.the stock file browser is often processing and can't do anything till processing done.other file managers see better so must be an app coding issue cause its rubbish compared to free file managers on the market.
Throw your computer monitor away and use a monitor with three times the resolution. It will use a lot more RAM.
The way you can "fix" this is to use another launcher like ADW EX and freeze apps like Social Hub and many many more. My Note only used around 300MB RAM before i upgraded and lost root yesterday. The one thing that uses the most resources is the TouchWiz launcher.

Great, I get it. Thanks.
Well, I want to keep TouchWiz if possible and perhaps give the OS another 100 - 150MB back which would really help the phone and so that I can preserve the look and functionality. How would you go about it because you seem to know what to do. Must I root it? Asking so that I know which forum searches to conduct.
Yup, you'll have to root (How to root). After rooting go to the market and install Titanium Backup, AntTek App Manager or RootAppDelete and delete/freeze the apps you don't want. Do NOT go on a kill streak and delete random stuff; you will regret it, so ask for help in this thread when you're ready and i'll guide you through it.
Hello today i went to the store and i was looking at the galaxy s4 and am planning to buy it but when i opened the task manager i saw that 1300mb is used out of 1780mb ram and thats a lot and the phone was not multitasking or opening any other application so thats too low cause if i want to play a heavy game the phone will be tooooo laggy and the game also,So for the people that owns the phone is this the same on your devices that the ram is so low

Yes, with all applications closed there is 1.3GB/1.7GB RAM used - which is annoying.
Probably due to all the bloatware included, wait a while for some good ROMs to show and you may be inclined to change ROM to something cleaner.

Mine uses 835 with all apps closed, currently on MDM firmware.
that means its so laggy if im playing a game or anything else
and why is it like that??
Hi guys I currently have the S3 and going to upgrade to the S5. However, I played with my friends new S5 and he hasn't got any real power hungry apps installed and i find it had to believe that when the phone is in idle mode it is using 1.4GB of RAM with "no tasks running". Is it just his phone or does everyone have the same issue? Also his phone makes a creaking noise when squeezed is this also a common issue? thanks in advance. I'm considering either buying this phone or m8 or wait for a month and see whether the s5 Prime rumors are true and get that.

Android keeps the recent apps in its memory so that they will be accessed faster next time. Android tries to learn which apps you are frequently using. But the bulk of the memory usage of S5 is from Samsung's pre-installed apps. The good thing with S5 is you can set majority of the apps to hibernate or to totally disable or uninstall them.
so if use a nova launchers for example does that mean touchwiz will not take up that much ram as its not being used? is it easy to disable app? cause i thought the only way to disable pre loaded apps was through rooting the phone, which i personal wouldn't do as im scared of bricking a brand new phone put i dont see the benefit in doing so,
Nova launcher uses significantly less resources than TouchWiz. Using it with 0 lag issues

my S5 uses 1.1gb of ram with nothing open.
ive been using the apps from this guy

ram booster and cache apps to sd booster
significant performance increase. im talking about no slowdowns and easy multitasking
after unlocking, installing lollipop and rooting
pretty significant increases. cannot complain at all.
dont have any slowdowns on my other 2 devices (n7 2013 and n6 on vzw) so cant compare to those but this fixed my shield lollipop issues
he has a lot of other products as well but i havent used them.

Woops Sorry. Here's a link to the ram Booster app then just click more apps by gejos
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gejos.android.rambooster
I remember the good old days of Eclair when these things used to be commonplace.
tl;dr if you're actually running one of these things and you're seeing a large and measurable change... something's not quite right.
Yes. Lollipop update. Tried factory reset, deleting certain apps. Nothing seems to help until I tried the ram Booster.
Ermm. Sounds like placebo. This isn't android gingerbread anymore and these types of tweaks are largely useless... On our high end device anyways.
If you do a search on xda, I am not the first person to mention these apps specifically. I agree that these things are mostly garbage but this one is different. I urge whoever is having performance issues with lollipop to try this.
Are you using the donate version with more options? I think I tried this app before and it didn't fix my slowdowns, but I will try again. I don't have SD card so I can't try the other cache to SD-app.
The slow downs and memory leak are so frustrating, I have to restart a couple of times every day to be able to play for an example Simpsons Tapped out. I use the same apps on my ASUS Tegra 4 tablet with 4.4.2 and it feels so much faster and there is no need to restart it every day.

nope, regular free version. i didnt even know the donate one had more options
Neither the donate or free version should provide any noticeable difference besides maybe more battery drain.
Thanks for the helpful feedback. Please try the app first and then you can comment.
I have been running the app for 5 days now, can't say I see any difference, I still have the memory leak (or what it is that causes the need to restart once or twice a day). Still have the UI slowdowns too.

I'm just going to venture a guess that any task killer that is significantly improving your battery life is probably rooting out apps that are falling into Lollipops memory holes. So the battery savings are accidental...
This is not how Android is supposed to run. This hasn't been the way Android has run since 2.2 or before, the last time task killers were all the rage.

A week ago I got myself a s8 ,I have an iPhone 7 Plus and I’m so sick of having to deal with this size , it feels like a brick, plus I don’t like the “psysical button “ , I wanted to get rid of it so I gave the s8 a try , and so I did and I loved the design , the screen , the camera ( night shots are better than the iPhone 7 in my opinion ) but the performance is just awful , innaceptable for a flagship , choppy scrolling , the framerate skips like crazy sometimes , it just ... lags :/
I couldn’t believe it after reading the rave reviews , so it turns out that the European version has the Exynos cpu instead of the snapdragon 835 and the benchmarks don’t tell the whole story , I tried uninstalling unnecessary apps , deactivating bloat apps , deactivating the side panel , using nova launcher ( without using root or freezing apps or something like that , but it didn’t help , did you guys just get used to the lag ? :/ have you read that the performance on the note 8 is better (the example version of course ) and if it is , so you think it’s because of the extra ram ?
I’m hopeful that Samsung will make the performance better with the Oreo update but that update will probably come in December / January , what are we supposed to do until then ?
Coming from a Huawei Mate 9 and resently activating my note 8(snapdragon) it ain't much better. Nothing about this phone is butter smooth.
Will be getting mate 10 next month. First Samsung since note 3/4.
Not horrible but expected more with specs/company
I honestly don´t know what you are talking about. Maybe I just don´t notice it.
I know up to the Galaxy S6 the Samsung Flagships were always lagging like crazy with StockROMs, but at least since the S7 it´s smooth like other Flagships. (Always talking about Exynos)
Where do you experience the lag? I just checked Twitter, Menus and browser an couldn´t notice any
I use Nova Launcher, which definitely improves the experience a lot. Combined with changing animations to 0.5x it almost never feels laggy. I rarely switch back to TouchWiz to see if it has improved, but always end up going back to Nova. I also use Gboard instead of Samsung keyboard, which also feels snappier and has better prediction.

Same here ! No more lag with this setup
I have the dual SIM international version (Exynos) since around launch date. I don't recall any instances of lag. On rare occasions there is the odd app crash.
I have not used an iPhone for any length of time to be able to compare, but we have a couple of iPads, one of them is relatively new and when using it for general browsing, reading, etc, I don't feel that I get a markedly better or smoother experience. Both S8 and iPad just work very well.

I have an iphone 7 256gb Red Edition and my S8 is no more laggy than my iphone, yes iphone can lag too. BTW, iphone is for sale. You need to be more specific where you see lags if you want people to help. I get lag when scrolling on Piano Tiles 2 but that's because he's a ****ty developer but the game is awesome. Need way more details.
I have exynos version with custom rom and i have no lags. If you what have fone with no lags at all buy iPhone. Every android have Little lags and glitches.
DEVELOPER OPTIONS (see screenshot) transition animation speed 0.5x
I read a post in the Essential Phone forum:
@IM0001 wrote:
"As far as snappyness, is it something like the transitions being slow or something else?
To make it more snappy, go into developer options and set the transition speed to .5 instead of 1. That should make things seem to zip."
I've attached a screenshot, but my transition animation speed is still at default 1x (i.e., not the 0.5x recommendation).

its more like the screen "trembles" , they just don't feel smooth , it feels like the phone it's at its limit, it's just "choppy"
Facebook is a horrible app regarding optimization. I also noticed horrible lags there. Ended up uninstalling and i am now using it via chrome and its great. No lags, bettet battery etc.
I dont use twitter but instagram is fine on me no lags at all. As for playstore nothing can be done about it. It was always that way.

All of this + youtube hdr playback above 720p. Seriously it should be fixed or bye bye samsung this time.
P.S The ``tremble`` is called stuttering and if you search from google you will found tons of users having exactly the same issue. In my oppinion the exynos processor throttles a lot due to overheating. Cant proove it though cause am no specialist on this matter

Lets say i visit www.rt.com with the browser , as soon as the comments the advertisments appear , performance is halved and it sucks to browse in such a way.
No lag for me, if there was then I wouldn't have the phone, I am EXTREMELY demanding. But then I dont have **** apps like twitter and facebook that are VERY badly written and drain the battery like theres no tomorrow. I also use nova so cant comment on whether any lag might be touchwiz related, not used touchwiz since my S3.

can you properly play 1440p hdr videos from youtube or even 1080p hdr without stutter and frame skip?

Weird thing-- I'm using one of the YouTube background play-enabled apps.. God I wish I could remember which one, but I got it here. Has some theme options, using one with a back background. I experience absolutely no lag with 1440phdr with this app.. No such luck with the base Youtube app
After cleaning up as many services as possible with Package Disabler, the rest of my interface lag has vanished (even in TouchWiz)
Last couple days have seemed like I have finally found the device the S8 is supposed to be, buried under the inefficient bloat and bogus it ships with.. Of course, I'm on the 835, so this may not have meant anything to begin with haha

Snapdragon isint much better either. My roommate got a pixel 2 XL and his phone is smoother (with all apps running) than my freshly factory reseted S8.
i just changed my iphone 7 with s8 exynos , i see no different in performance , in fact i loved s8 more , i can't deny that s8 have a little of lags but from my experience ios has lags too , i have 6:30H screen on time in my s8 , i never dreamed about that in my iphone 7 , in iphone I only got 5H screen on time
This is assuming the iPhone 7 suffered no lag or stutters under iOS 11. I came from the iPhone 7 and use to notice stutters while scrolling through contact lists and even the home button had delays. I've got Nova Launcher set up on my current S8 and stock rom with tons of apps and never formatted since I've been using it for the past 3months. I won't lie I did come across occasional stutters but I find it way more fluid than the experience I had on iOS. The list scrolling, app animations, etc is really smooth.

I agree to a certain extent. I used the Xperia XZ1 Compact for a month on Android 8.0. The interface felt faster than the S8 given the same developer options. You can speed up the S8 if you want by lowering the screen resolution (settings>display). But then you wouldn't have the higest (other than S7) screen DPI ever seen on a phone.
