Your rooted. Your system has been modified. That usually prevents carrier updates. That's been covered eleventy bagillion times on XDA.

If your Status in Settings says CUSTOM. You won't be able to do system updates.

It all depends how much security they put in the phone...this time thy were really anti-modding with the att version, locking our boot loader and creating a boot splash that tells the world you've rooted your phone..of course there is a way around that boot splash
Basically...things are changing, devices are getting more and more locked down...but the sgs4 isn't the first phone that doesn't allow rooted devices to be updated

My stock unrooted wifi galaxy tab 10.1 just received an update OTA that seems to have done nothing except LOCK my unlocked bootloader. It was only 11.2mb and during the update process my tab went into download mode, then to a command line looking interface with commands related to encrypting bootloader. I no longer have the unlocked symbol upon boot up. Look out for update version UEKG4!
EDIT: Google videos app has been loaded as well, but not in the market, just the app.
Very odd. What region are you in? I just did an update check and there was no update available.
I am in the US. I cant find anything else that it may have updated. No extra apps, features, or apparent bug fixes. Just locked bootloader.

wow, thanks for the warning.
Yes, thank you for the warning. As a heads up to anyone that has even an inkling of interest in rooting your tablet. DO NOT TAKE OTA's until they have been looked through by the devs. Just look at the evo 4g forums on here
I guess I am confused, my tab was/is locked but I have CW recovery and a custom rom. So what is the big deal?
Yeah, i was wondering the same thing.
Just because, i guess....
Ota update is online, just checked and is showing in the update section. I'm in Romania on a US retail tablet EKF3 ROM!
BTW how do you tell if your device is locked or unlocked?

If it is unlocked, there is a picture of a Lock during bootup and it shows as open.
If it is locked, then there is no picture at all.
(at least this is how my 2 different tabs showed up)

Locked bootloaders will limit what can be flashed to the Tablet, we can get custom roms that are based off samsung sources.
Locked bootloaders will not be able to flash TABUNTU unless poitee can find a way around it...
im not trying to be rude or anything guys. But you should really look into what a locked and unlocked bootloader really is. If you haven't noticed, we can flash cmw. That means we can flash roms, kernels, and root. There is no reason to be worried at all. It makes no difference to have a locked or unlocked bootloader unless you wanna flash something that needs a different bootloader. Which there isn't much right now except for tabuntu.
I'm in NJ and showing no update available.

I have a Canadian (Rogers) Galaxy S4, SIM unlocked (through code), on Telus. It was rooted with motochopper and I'm currently running CM 10.1 Nightlies. Whenever I reset the phone, the date automatically gets set to 1970 (and random date and time), and will stay this way if I'm not on Wifi or on data. Whatsapp will normally tell me my date is wrong in the notification bar. Furthermore, the dates on my stock nandroid says '1969-12-31'
Does anyone have an idea of the root of the problem, and how to possibly fix it? Thanks.
it's something to do with the phone not having some kind of time module. The phone loads the time from some file or the network when you boot up thats why recovery doesn't work right. Same problem on S2 and S3 and I'm sure on other Samsung devices.

I had a Bell Galaxy S2 that was unlocked and used on Rogers, but it never had this problem. I pretty sure this problem didn't exist until I either sim unlocked it or rooted it with motochopper. Would unrooting it and re-rooting with Chainfire's method be worth a shot?
rogers s4 here to and my dates are 1970 as well , i'm 1/2 tempted to load up cwm instead of this chopper one
This has nothing to do with root. Not even the same partition. Just Google galaxy s3 1970.

Kernel doesn't support writing to the RTC (real time clock) so its incorrect unless running in a system that can sync time from the network - ie. not recovery.
Change http://review.cyanogenmod.org/#/c/43377/ for CM10.1 enables RTC write, but its not been merged. Historically, this caused major problems on S3s until an updated modem was released. Hence, its not been merged for S4s until extensive testing is completed.
After rooting I337UCUFNI1, my S4 randomly shows up an error message:
"unable to detect SIM card".
The frequency is at least once per day.
So I brought my phone back to ATT warranty department.
They flashed a stock 4.4.2 ROM.
Then this problem never happens again..
Not sure if that is about the kernel flash thing or not.
How did you root that build number? I was rooted then my phone done an ota update and now towel root doesn't work anymore. So far I don't see anyway to do it. Please let me know what you used . Thanks

Do you have an Amazon app? they may cause SIM problems
I just received my phone yesterday, and updated to 4.4.4 in ignorance. I realized Towelroot doesn't work on 4.4.4.
Without root, I feel the restrictions of the device - there are many things I cannot do. (I owned a Galaxy S2 prior to this - I still like it - didn't realize how many things I took for granted which can only be done after root!)
How can I get the Verizon Note 3 rooted?
I was wondering if Towelroot would work on 4.4.4. So you have tried and can verify that it doesn't work???

There is no root method as of now and I believe most of the devs that worked on getting root for updates and devs that worked on safestrap no longer support this device. So unless some of the new devs for this device can figure it out you may be SOL.

No way to downgrade without root. I dont know how you obtained the phone, but if thru regular channels you can try sending it back and saying it was messed up out the box and request a new one. And make sure not to update that one if you do get it.
Just did exactly that - then I saw your response - imagine my surprise! Thanks.

I told him what's the issue. He said he understands and took the phone inside, and confirmed that he couldn't solve it, then ordered a replacement. The store guys are good - you just need to ask nicely and explain what is the problem and why it is important.
Hi All,
So about an hour ago I searched for an update knowing that Verizon was supposed to be pushing out a security update today. It found an update and installed it. After reboot, the phone will not start. The splash screen shows the unlocked lock and the word "custom." The next screen says "Start Up Failed - Your device didn't start up successfully. Use the Verizon Software Repair Assistant on a computer to repair your device. Connect your device to your computer to get the Verizon Software Repair Assistant." More specifically, in the corner it says "Custom binary blocked by SECURE BOOT (boot.img)."
The Verizon Software Repair Assistant doesn't pop up when I plug it into my computer, and I can't find it online.
Ironically this is the ONE phone I have not actually tinkered with so yeah... VZW said they will most likely have to ship my work a new phone for replacement. I can't expedite that since I'm not authorized on the work account. Is there an image for Odin floating around that I can use to flash this myself? Help me please!!!
You did tinker, you tried to install the wrong/a bad file.
Odin to stock, there's a thread in one of the S7/S7e forums with the Verizon stock files.

where did you "find" this update? unless you went to settings and hit software update, you probably downloaded an incorrect update for the wrong phone, which soft bricked it. needs a re-flash.

I did in fact hit software update and let the phone search for the update itself. I have no reason to lie about this. I'm the first to admit when I screw up. I see someone has the firmwares on his mediashare in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=65764861&postcount=14. I just requested access to the file I need.

UPDATE: I was able to get the phone back to life by doing a recovery boot (power up + home button + power). Previously, I was doing it the LG G2 way not using the home button. The phone booted all the way but now it still says I'm "custom." I'm holding off on using Odin to flash the full stock firmware because I've read that it won't reset that custom thing. Thoughts on Odin?
If you flash a factory image you should be good. Just make sure it's for the variant you are using.
Another update: I spoke with a great VZW rep today and explained everything. She posted an androidcentral forum link in the ticket where a woman had the same exact thing happen to her on her GS6. She also put in there that my valid is still valid. So that's that and I'll just keep using the phone as is now.

Definitely wasn't rooted. I still suspect some goofball engineer at VZW in my area posted the update before it was signed properly or something like that. The phone has been working great though. It was a worthy upgrade from my LG G2.
