My tab did the same, but when I check root with terminal emulator, i discovered that my tab was no longer rooted. Type su into the terminal emulator field.
Install iconiaRoot and unroot it,the same way you rooted it.You should have made an initial backup from the beginning, but iconiaRoot should work.
nope, probably won't work.
superuser app is gone, but the su binaries are still in system/xbin/

Make sure USB debugging is enabled under settings/applications. If it's been disabled it won't unroot.
Had the exact same issue after flashing light speed rom completely lost root still had cwm as recovery but would not allow me access to root

Wont let me delete it and I've factory reset and what not still in my apps list acts like a factory app now lol and it's not rooted
any ideas on how to remove the super user app
I really don't understand this phone. I've been on a quest of 2 weeks to be rooted and on official status, finally i gave up everything because i was not able to have both. Finally i flashed factory rom through odin, formated a couple of time the phone, and i got back official status. I much rather gave up a few rooting benefits then OTAs, at least until they fix the phone's problems.
Well, this morning, i wake up, and that DAMN custom status is back....WHY????????? I'm not rooted, i'm 100% stock, i checked with rootchecker and my phone doesnt have root....then why does that damn status keep coming back??? There is obviously something else that triggers it......man i'm so deperate! Please help!

It's really not as big of a deal as you are making it. The way I see it you have 2 choices.
1. Exchange the phone for another (that might do the same thing)
2. Ignore it.
Just like every other Galaxy phone out there (you remember the skyrockets, right?) not all of them react the same way. Some get custom, some do not. Others switch back and forth.
I've noticed you have made many posts about this same thing. If someone hasn't provided a concrete answer that has worked for you by now it just doesn't exist yet. No matter how frustrated you are over it, making new posts about it are not going to change anything.
Its up to you if you keep wanting to post about it (I'm not complaining about it), I just don't think it's going to get you any more information at this point than what already has been said. Maybe I am wrong and someone will tell you exactly what to do to make it "official", but I haven't seen anything yet.
Good luck and try not to let it get to you so much.
euhhh no, they are not about the same thing, one was about retaining officiel while rooted, and now that i've given up on that, i still have a custom status, the reson why i dont report there is becuase poeple have seen the thread and will not go back, so in order to attract new poster i create a new thread. And no, i dont want to ignore anything because i want OTAs. If you have a problem with that, dont answer
You need to re-root (motochopper method) and then using a file browser such as "root explorer" go to:
/System/Xbin
Once you have navigated to the above path, delete these two files:
"su" and " busybox"
Once you've deleted the two files, uninstall SuperSU and reboot your phone twice.
You'll notice that after the second reboot the "custom" will revert back to "official"

correct me if i'm wrong but these 2 files, should not even exist if you install a firmware thru odin and format the phone a few times...
I went through what you have, I completed a full stock restore via Odin and these two files I mentioned were still there. Use a file explorer and go to the path I suggested and you'll see them there

I don't believe the current Odin contains a pit...or whatever it is that formats the phone...
So all Odin is going to do is reinstall everything...so replace missing or corrupted files - it will not delete your new files
Formating from the phone itself won't delete everything...its just going to delete your apps, app data, and cache
Therefore doing multiple factory resets and odins likely will not remove all traces of root...someone correct me if I'm wrong but that's what I believe is the case...

AT&T software update push or download will not work for your phone if it is showing custom. People like to be getting these stock updates as soon as they are published by the provider, not when some good heart packages a new ROM using them.

Good info here, I did this procedure as you described, and yes, official is showing, but you can NOT delete su, it will unroot. I just renamed the 2 files, and root was gone. renamed su back, re-installed su superuser, and reboot, root is back with official status.
Thanks.

I tried this procedure and still have custom after 2 reboots. I renamed su and busybox then verified root was gone. Then renamed su back. I guess the part I was confused at was reinstall super user. Do I uninstall then re-install from play store?
Thank you.
EDIT: Followed my thought of uninstalling and re-installing through play store and still get custom.

Good answer, why does it matter if it says custom? whats the big deal here. If you are wanting the update, why not just wait until a dev does what they need to do to it, and flash it later. I updated 1 time in a year on my GS3, and never did it again. When a new rom is developed, it usually is a base from the update...so....

Well, you do not have to install the ZIP, but instead, do the following:
- Install SuperSU from the market
- Grant SuperSU root access
- When asked to update su-binary, please do
- Remove SuperUser from your device
- Reboot (I read two reboots are needed to make the icon disappear again.)

My process completely.
Remove Busybox from system/xbin (or your busybox backup)
Install SuperSU by Chainfire from playstore.
Open SuperSU and Grant SU root
Update the binary
Say yes to try to remove other root apps. This will remove superuser.
reboot
reboot
On second reboot you will notice the Galaxy S4 logo returns and Official Status has returned.
If it has not returned then some other issue is causing the custom status.

I was able to get official and root, the problem is it comes back after 2-3 days, please report back on sturday and tell me if its still official, also this logo you are talking about, i never see it because im in canada and my bootloader is unlocked already
EDIT: Ok, so once i was rooted and installed SuperSU and got superuser out, i deleted busybox, i then rebooted ONCE and got official just like that. I also took out SD card because i know this screwed me up last time. I'm happy because i'm rooted and official, but i'm not convinced this will last very long because it has never lasted more than 2 days. I will report back in a few days. Thanks Cagman, you've been very helpful and what you told me to do did the best results for me, i just hope they last

Hello developers.
I'm trying to reroot my phone after the latest 4.3 update via ODIN for my Indian handset.
I'm trying using CF-AutoRoot via ODIN and the it says PASS and the phone restarts normally as it should but the root is simply not happening.
there were 2 android 4.3 updates for my device and i installed the latest (you can see the post title for the exact version)
after everything completed properly i simply tried CF-AutoRoot via ODIN and nothing is happening.
Till 4.2.2, it got rooted properly without such or any other problems.
Kindly assist me out in getting my phone rooted.

Weird. I rooted using CF Auto Root after flashing 4.3 MJ8, it always worked! I never did OTA update though, always used Odin and full wipe.

The rooting worked so far for me. Have you enabled KNOX? They enhanced the security features and as far as I heard KNOX-enabled devices can't get full root. Verify whether it is enabled or not. I'm not sure whether the user enables it or not but that may be the reason. I'm also not sure whether this KNOX security really affects I9500 models. I9505 models are definitely affected.

Probably I never full wiped.
The apps and all other data is retained (normally all is retained when we update rom via odin).
Factory reset (full wipe) was never required earlier to get root to work.
Knox is not on from my side though I get some notifications always that some app tried to access something and Knox blocked that. But I guess that is something else because we need to manually activate Knox after opening the Knox app.

im on 4.2.2 MG9 and would like to update to 4.3 and have root without the know issue.
thanks.
Backup and Factory reset and cache clear after updating to 4.3
Then you'll get stock Samsung 4.3
Follow the same method to root (auto root) or alternatively flash super su via cwm/twrp/stock recovery.

Thank you. Will this trip the knox thing?
After using CF-AUto root you need to update Super SU App on first boot.
Then Open SuperSU app and choose to install SU Binary without using a custom recovery.
Then reboot.
Then install Titanium backup pro and use it to free all Knox related files.
There are 7 of them and you need to remove all of them.
Remember you need to install a custom recovery to install busybox. (atleast in my case)
Install http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2489234 via ODIN.
Once you are on custom recovery.
Use busybox installer to install busybox.
reboot.
You are done.

No mate.
Wait for a future update to trip that.
In the mean time, I'm trying to trip that since it isn't very difficult just lazy to try everything since everytime 1 thing fails, I need to restore the whole data and if takes much of my bandwidth.
Hope you understand.
And the device status will also remain custom.
P.S. Touchwiz UI from Samsung will hang on a later date due to some app compatibility issue (I'm not sure which app but I can tell a large set of apps and it will hang due to any one from that list) so it is preferred to shift to some other launcher on pre hand.

Waiting is good.
Don't sell your phone though (for obvious reasons).
You've got much to explore.
When it comes to selling, you'll get money whenever you do that so keep that option as your last bet.
Custom roms aren't really preferred from my side until you are a die hard modification fan!.
Rooting is the only problem (which is solved now I guess) on the latest firmware.
Rooting won't do any problem, believe me (except warranty).

hello again, i am asking this question because i cant post in the development forum yet.
i downloaded 3 files from the OP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317105
the PDA, CSC and modem. all for MJ8, downloaded PDA is odex.
when i flashed 3 of the files with ODIN like shown in op my device. After i restarted i got errors for Unfortunately, the process com.google.process.gapps .
i searched on google and did what was suggested, like clearing dalvik cache, resetting default apps, uninstalling the play store update etc.
the phone was unusable, the errors popedup every second.
I had to go back to the MG9 4.2.2 firmware.
What did i do wrong?
have you guys tried the method mentioned in the post. it prerooted and knox free 4.3 firmware.

Probably you want to upgrade to 4.3?
If so goto sammobile.com and find the latest firmware for your device from there, download and flash the same via odin.
You're now on 4.3!
Once done you can root from the auto root method by chain fire.

Hi,
i get a notification about "the device has noticed an app trying to perform prohibited actions. For security reasons we advise a reboot.reboot now or reboot later are my choices"
what is that about?
It doesnt say which app and what it did. I basically havent really installed anything so i dont know whats up.
I got a 0x0 working root with SU and tested. UrdlV 0.2'ed.

Haven't seen that one before, seen one similar though. Is it a KNOX notification? - check what apps you have that are demanding access to system files (root apps) - and is your root working 100%? - It is possible you have deny apps that ask for Superuser in SU, find em, tweak em and should be ok.
If none of the above, may need to unroot, then re-root as it could be a bad root.
Are you talking about something like this, in the attachment?
I'm getting these notifications every once in a while, I'm not rooted, BUT (!!!) I have some apps installed that require root access (moved all my junk basically from my rooted S2 and installed all the apps deciding to root it later). So I think is that one of the apps is trying to access the root and phone is shutting it down. If you're getting this on your rooted phone, I'd double check if it's really rooted.
The latest MJ7 firmware update solve this prevention message.

It was my understanding that some apps were trying to gain root access on my unrooted phone, guess I was wrong.
I however didn't get anymore of these notifications (I don't think so) since the OTA update to MJ7, as the member alanchai mentioned prior to your reply. :good:
Hi All,
Not sure if this is a fix for all but it has worked for me as I was getting the same preventative message in notifications.
I had some apps which were installed by allowing 'unknown sources (other than play store)', once installed I unticked the 'unknown sources (under security)' this caused me to get these preventative notifications so ticked the box again and have not had the message reappear.
Am using the Note 3 SM-N9005.

Not quite true. You CAN install an OTA if you are rooted, though you WILL lose root and so have to re-root afterwards. Yes, the OTA MAY fail, that's true, but that's usually only the case if you're running an older version of SuperSU that had an issue that's since been fixed.
The trick that messes people up and will cause a failure (though almost definitely not a bricked phone) is you can't have actually made any changes to system files in any way. That obviously means you can't have edited any system files, used any tweaks or mods, etc. It ALSO means you can't have disabled apps using something like Titantium... if you can't disable an app via the standard system app manager but you do through Titantium then that will cause the OTA to fail.
I know this all because I've installed the last three OTAs with root with no issues, but I'm very careful about all of the above because I was burned a few times in the past until I learned
