I really like the Superuser application made by ChainsDD, which I have used for a long time now. Whenever I try updating the binary after downloading it, though, it always fails on "Making sure new su works...". If anyone could provide any assistance, that would make my day!

Try the one made by Chainfire.
That's what I'm currently using, but I really just don't like it as much. I'm content using it, but if at all possible, I'd prefer to be on ChainsDD's variant.

I see.
The chainsDD last updated was Jun/2012
Probably not possible then? Shame. Thanks anyway though.

I want to get a list of root methods people have tried and which ones have been successful.
Kingo Root seems to be the most discussed method, but various reports have raised questions about whether it steals data. Looks as though the official policy on XDA is that it's in limbo until deemed safe:

This method is widely used and from my research, considered safe by most people, but I don't know if anybody has used it successfully on a G Pad.
Please report in this thread what method you've tried and what worked.
I have tried Framaroot 1.7 but it did not work.

I used the same method and also replaced Superuser with Supersu. And I installed Busybox from Google Play. The script works great! I would recommend that everbody who has not yet rooted use this method and not Kingo.

I think the two apps are pretty similar. I read reviews that said that SuperSU was better for later versions of Android and Superuser was better for older versions. I've been using SuperSU on my phone for a while, so I'm more familiar with it. Probably doesn't matter much which one you use.
As far as switching the apps, just uninstall Superuser and install SuperSU.

Agree. Supersu is faster in granting permissions on every boot and is considered better suitable for OS JB and above

Can you root again as per the link in my previous post and then install supersu from playstore. Supersu will detect superuser and it will ask to delete it. This is how I did.

Open up a terminal app (say, Connectbot), Connect to local. When you get a $ prompt, type 'su'. If you get a # prompt, you're rooted.

You can use SuperSU and there's nothing wrong with that but there's also nothing wrong with Superuser.
It works fine for new versions of Android, in fact it is what is built into CM11.
I think people are confusing the Superuser I included with the old Superuser made by ChainsDD. I included Superuser by Koush/Clockwork Mod because it is open source and used by CyanogenMod.
When it comes to an app that is so important to maintaining security then I stick with open source.

As we've stated many times before - it's planned. Just hasn't been high priority since it's easy enough to flash SuperSU in recovery.

Hey guys i have an i9300 intl s3 and i am using the OmniROM Nightly build updates...
one bug to report if you will, i cant root the rom, i have tried Odin and Kingo but to no avail.
this means i cant get SU privileges and most of all, i cant auto update to the latest nightly and have to manually keep upgrading daily to the latest build, regardless to say, this means reloading all my stuff again, everyday.
Could you help a fellow out and try check on why we cant root the OmniROM 4.4 yet?
I have flashed SuperSU to my phone and its still not rooted.
Perhaps a link with how to force SU privileges if you have any?

See the response in the thread you created.
I know that Chainfire helped build the OpenDelta system so it's highly likely that the 'SuperSU' app will be integrated for Superuser management. But when I flash Omni I want the complete opensource flavor. That's simply the way it should be. Right now Kousk's Superuser seems like the only viable option for now.
We need to talk about this because I am using Omni with no proprietary software. Support FOSS (Free and open software)!

It's just a hook using intents - you see it if you have SuperSU installed but it's not integrated beyond just a link for now.

I've never rooted a phone before and I'm a little nervous about doing so. I don't fully understand the difference between all the various ROM's. For instance are there advantages and disadvantages between the different ROMs that are floating around? Also what happens when 4.4 comes out? I'm assuming I'd be blocked from Updating. Would I have to wait until someone releases a 4.4 ROM? The main reason I want to Root is to remove all the useless apps Samsung/Tmobile stuck on my phone, but when I check out the processes, I don't even see that they are running. Would it even be worth it to root if this is the only reason I am doing it for?
I also see people talking about removing TouchWiz once they are rooted. I already am using Nova, but if I remove TouchWiz, will I just have the basic Android UI like I had on my Nexus? Or will I have to stick with a 3rd party launcher? Does removing TouchWiz result in a noticeable speed difference?
Hey rooting isn't for everyone. You could root and get rid of certain apps and bloatware. What I did before rooting was just disable and hide those apps.
It was fine but then as root user for a long time, I rooted and now use it more to tweak the look and feel.
The best way to know a rom is to try it.
I have used alot on this forum but currently feel comfortable with Omega Rom v6 with Wanam Xposed.
The possibilities are endless and as long as you understand the Knox flag then you should be free to try and do what you will.
Last if you ever want to just go back to stock and leave it there with updates it's pretty easy.
Sam mobile has always the latest updates available to download and you install those with Odin.
Good luck

Thanks for the response! May I ask how you disabled and hid the apps without rooting?
Nevermind actually, I figured out how to turn them off from the App info screen. But is there a way to hide them so they don't show up at all?
Edit: lol nevermind again. They disappear when you turn them off. Thank you so much for letting me know about this! I had no idea this was possible

Hey all I have been lurking this thread for awhile and today I saw that we have finally been granted root access. Now I am going to be totally honest, I am a total NOOB and have no idea what i can do with a rooted phone.
Can someone point me in the right direction as to how i can uninstall bloat? And install fancy modifications???? I would greatly appreciate any help! Thank you!
For the bloat I use titanium backup. As for the fancy modifications I would look into xposed

You can PM me if you want. I'll give you some tips/etc. For starters make sure you are rooted and have the latest SuperSu installed. (Check the root thread for a newer version, dont think play store has been updated yet). And then I would recommend installing Titanium Backup (as stated above) and even buying the Pro version for $5, its worth it in the long run if you ask me. I';ve used it on the last 7 android phones ive owned. So it's well paid for itself. once your set there PM me and i'll give you some things to check out.
We may get Safestrap recovery at some point but that will only allow us to flash roms based on the stock kernel. We shall see.

Do yourself a favor and freeze the apps you don't want first, instead of uninstalling. Atleast if you freeze an app with titanium backup and it screws your phone you can just unfreeze it and be good to go.

Use root explorer or the equivalent, go into /data/app and locate eu.chainfire.supersu.apk and if you have the pro version, locate eu.chainfire.supersu.pro.apk (there may be a "-<number>" before the ".apk) and tap on them and you should get asked if you want to install or view. Install each.
That should fix the problem.

Your best bet is to install safestrap and flash a supersu package. Then uninstall ss if u want. Towel root is a temporary fix imo.
Check your /data/data folder and /data/app (/system/app if you've converted) and check for duplicates or what number beside package name (e.g. com.xxx.xxxx-1 or -2 and sometimes even 3 and 4. Rename it to have a -1 and then go to /data/dalvik-cache and find the same package(s), delete them and reboot. If still unsuccessful, reflash from safestrap but manually mount system b4 flashing just for the hell of it and after second boot-up (if required), you should be good. Erase any .txt or the like from sdcard and extsdcard volumes from chainfire or supersu too I almost forgot to add
Got it to finally update binaries....upgrade your SU to Beta version 2.13. Works like a charm and snappier!
Just want to say thank you to everyone who replied with great suggestions, unfortunately none of them worked. I did however stumble on a fix. I downloaded mobogenie , and when it went out to look for app updates, it had an update for superSU that the play store did not show me. I ran the updates and now we're good.
Hope this fix might help others who are stuck in the same boat.

Thanks for the tip. Technology is complicated, it is weird how a random app like that will fix something.
My superSU actually works now, one day it just asked to update and it actually worked! I think that was after another fresh factory restore and towelroot.
Anyway, good luck!
