[Q] Issue with auto focus on AOSP camera! - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm having issues with auto focus, on the regular camera and HDR. It seems like only the first picture you take will focus, and after that it stops. On regular camera I gotta change it to "auto focus" from "continuous picture" every time I load up the camera and then, focus will stay working. But that's just for regular camera, on hdr I can't change the focus settings.. it's greyed out. So just the first shot will focus and after that it'll stop working
Btw what is smart capture?
I'm on latest xylon

long press the button to shoot the photo, release it when the object is in focus. if you are taking photos in low light, youll jave to touch the object on the screen so itll focus on it.

What radio are you on? The older radios screw with auto focus.

had same issues, including my flash not working properly, after downgrading my radio... I flashed banks cam zip from his gapps thread in themes and no issues since

(Q) Does your Nexus have shutter lag? (Camera)

Just wondering if anyone else has quite a bit of shutter lag on their nexus camera? I personally do unfortunately, is this normal? Many people say theirs is instant .

The N4 doesn't have a zero shutter lag for me either.
HDR setting will slow things down but will make the pictures nicer. Try toggling that and see if it helps.

lag variation between N4s
Just bumping this topic. I recently started using burst mode on the CM10.1 camera, and noticed the shutter on my wife's camera is able to take twice as many pictures as mine in the same amount of time. She and I have nearly identical Nexus 4's.... both running CM10.1. I was using a custom kernel (Franco), so I reverted to the stock CM kernel, but the lag persisted. I'm hoping that it's some sort of software configuration issue... but it's starting to look like there is simply some variation in the Nexus 4's that have been manufactured. Can anyone else comment on the shutter speeds of their respective N4s? What ROM/Kernel combos are you all using?
I don't have this problem but sometimes when I use the camera right from the lock screen.. exit camera, go to gallery, exit come back to gallery after some time have pass, all my pictures are blank. I can't view them until i FC the gallery.. Occasionally when I go to the camera app, instead of the lock screen too.. Only bug, I know with my first nexus 4 and my replacement..

It's of course going to vary on how well it can focus and what kind of focus mode you have.
With point and shoot cameras, the general advice in the past (back when they were a bit slower than they are now), was to eliminate as many automation possible (ie: if possible manually set iso, white balance, etc). Can also set the focusing mode to something else rather than continuous.
I'm not a huge fan of the camera's lag, but the quality is higher than past camera phones I've had, but because the sensor element is probably larger, it's probably more likely to delay as it gets better focus (Smaller sensor will have wider depth of field so won't need to take as much time to focus, but the clarity isn't as good either).
I kind of wish you could set stuff like shutter speed, f-stop and such on the N4's camera, but it doesn't really surprise me that I can't (besides just how many aperture stops could it possibly have in such a lens before diffraction hits it).

Camera problem with focus on HDR mode

Im facing a terrible problem, when I'm using the camera it is focusing right, but when I turn HDR on, stock camera or camera zoom fx, doesn't matter it focus just one time and stay with the focus signal and GUI texture. Sometimes it makes a rattle sound, but just on HDR mode, nexus 4 have an HDR through the software or hardware? I faced it on CM 10.2 stable for the first time but I gone through a lot of custom Roms and anything change it back to factory, I'm on stock 4.3 now, and facing just the focus problem, not the rattle.
Anyone?
I do have a problem with HDR mode but it does auto focus when I move camera around. If I touch to focus it wont, it just shows green already focus sign. Whoever I ask they just told to clear camera and gallery app caches so you may try it and if it works ?

Yes, this is what occur with me, I changed many times my custom rom, but I think it's camera hardware problem, but I can't see why it just occur with HDR, in all apps that use HDR hardware and not the usual software with two images I can't focus and sometimes crashes, if I let it focus it focus normally. Auto focus work, we need to find a fix.

I also experienced that sometimes selection of other scene modes(party mode for example) this tap to focus also dont work. Only fix that works is " only first focus works but if you try more it wont until restart camera app or take picture" Probably hw problem but hdr is a function of taking two pictures and combine them, why would it be a hw problem while normal mode focusing works ?

Yes but we have two different hdrs in the world, the one that is combined by software after taking two pictures, and our HDR like the iPhone one, the processor and the camera works together to take two images faster, and combines it with hardware. With software you see the camera shots two times, with hardware it's like nexus 4 and iPhone, you see 1 picture taking and a Loading icon until it saves, because it uses hardware. I think it's camera problem, if you see the camera changes when you click on HDR, the exposure changes automatically without the autofocus or touch, before that, because the hardware already changed everything to take HDR shots.

I think I might have find a solution can you try to use latest version of "snap hdr camera" ? I think it allows you to touch to focus in HDR mode(but not hdr of app you need to select it from scenemodes)

For HDR i'm using Pure HDR Camera. I have the snap hdr camera, if you compare to stock, you can see that you are able to use touch to focus because it isn't the same HDR technology, stock camera use the built'n HDR feature of the hardware, snap HDR camera just take 2 fast pics, one with low exposure and one with high exposure. The stock camera do the same thing, but because this is a hardware feature, you don't see the camera changing exposure or taking more than 1 picture. To a workaround you found the snap HDR camera and I found Pure HDR Camera, it takes 3 photos.
Edit: Here is a compare, if you hold still, Pure HDR do a better job, look the results without cheat, same hour, same exposure, same local, Snap took 2 pictures, pure took 3 and saved each exposure too.

I think you did not understand me correctly. Snap HDR has two hdr modes; first one in directly in setting menu (not so good HDR) but it only took two pictures and merge them. Second one is added only for nexus 4 (real hdr) and it is in scene mode settings. You need to check second one. I attached some pictures 1st one is taken by Snap HDR with "real HDR" mode 2nd one is stock camera HDR mode 3rd is the Snap HDR "not so good HDR" mode setting 4th one is the good HDR mode setting you should try it is the same as stock camera HDR. But problem is which I realize now, focusing still not very good and if you are stationary it still can not focus correctly but at least it tries. In snap if you move just a little and focus it by tapping it focuses correctly but in stock app you need to move camera then autofocus kicks and focuses.

Oh, know I understand, when I arrive at home I will check it. As you already saw, I think it uses the same hardware function as stock camera. Really, checkout Pure HDR camera PRO, it's awesome, and it's really like professional HDR. I think we will stay with auto focus :/. I already tried to create a custom stock camera with a updated touch to focus code but it doesn't changed anything, seems that camera change her functions when we select HDR. I will edit this post later, to achieve a better HDR picture you need to take it outdoor, when exposure change a lot.

Auto focus for .5 seconds then leaves

I'm trying to find a solution or reason for my phone auto-focusing perfectly on close-up shots for only an instant. Then it goes out of focus.
I have found older threads of problems with MACRO capturing, but the problem is not focusing at all. Mine focuses perfectly, then leaves.
It acts the exact same way with snapchat, camera 360, and snap camera.
Also, "close-up" is about a foot away or less. However, anything further isn't exactly as noticeable when it comes to determining how precise the focus is.

Hi billybag did you ever get a fix your your focusing problem? I have exactly the same problem with my note3 too.
Close up, the camera will focus correctly for a split second but wont stay on that focus. Tried several other camera apps but all have similar results

Autofocus problem

Greetings!
Before I think about opening and exposing the guts of my beloved Note 3 I had a question. The problem I'm having as of late is with my autofocus. When I open up the camera app I feel the camera vibrate as its focusing. Sometimes it will focus in on what I'm looking at, sometimes it doesn't.The autofocus will vibrate for long periods of time sometimes with no luck and will just be blurry. I'm thinking I could just replace the camera but what I need to find out is if it's the camera or does something else control the autofocus? I've also tried another camera app camera fv-5 and the problem with the autofocus is still present. Many Thanks
I had a similar problem. My camera looked like crappie blurry fuzzy, not like before 4.4.2 so I tolerated it until battery life was a disaster then I found xda and rooted and instslled jasmine rom and that fixed my camera and battery. Now the camera is s5 camera big difference in quality battery is great as well. I double checked my camera by installing a different rom and wow it looked so bad I could not see anything but blur so I went back to jasmine the newest version.

Hello,
I've installed the Lenovo Camera.apk and it works great.
With the samsung camera, maybe try to turn on the flash, It did resolve my issue with the autofocus.

Can't decide. Proshot or manual camera?

Anyone try these 2 apps? Can't decide which one to choose. Which one better?
Thanks in advance!
Edit: care to share your favourite camera app and why?
manual camera supports 6p?Its been a while since last update.
Exposure compensation is missing in both.
I have Manual Camera on my 6P but pics are better with stock camera.
Pics are better in Stock camera but if u need manual focus, its better to get manual camera as pro shot doesn't have the option. I don't own manual but I do have camera v5, pro shot, better camera unlocked and stock. And I use the stock one 99% time, unless I want to show off with bokeh, I use camera fv5. It's disappointing that pro shot doesn't have manual focus. Or at least I don't know

Just as an FYI, ProShot does have manual focus. It took me a little bit to figure out when I first downloaded it, but all you have to do is drag your finger across the region I circled and it will switch to manual focus. To return to auto focus, the button used to switch between the front and rear cameras (to the left of the shutter button) will read "AF". Simply press that.
I too use the stock camera a majority of the time, as I feel the images come out better. But for manual shots, I use ProShot. The developer seems to be good ad updating the app, while I have read the manual camera is no longer being supported.
