In the 4 years on my galaxy s s2 s3 and ntot 2 I have had the same experience. Never could last on a cm based rom for more than a week. Battery has always been horrible on cm based roms.

CM is an acquired taste, it's not for everybody.
advantages are that it's light and practical with some excellent options, I like the sense camera to much to stay on CM for too long, but I always try it out .

Also, having a solid build of CM is great for development of other non-sense based ROMs but I totally agree with you about the sense camera, it is better than the AOSP camera
Very early days but I am running the latest nightly and apart from some niggly performance issues (fixed in the next nightly) it is running very well on my phone and the camera is ok but yeah the sense camera is much better.

Haven't changed the DPI no, and very impressed with stability of the build I have had pretty much no crashes at all. However there are some performance issues, FPS is much lower than in sense based ROMs in a number of games, hopefully should be addressed in the next few nightlies.
Audio is of good quality if perhaps slightly quieter out of speakers than on sense. Some random dipping of volume though listening to sound through headphones

I got the One for its camera mostly and body 2nd. Because 2 years down the road, when other iterations are released this camera will still be king of the hill.
The AOSP camera is good but it still has a few bugs atm and obviously it can't take full advantage of the image processing chip on the one.

CM chews the battery until it's well developed on a device. Plus you'll lose the HTC Camera app, HTC Zoe etc....that alone is enough to put me off.

Even Release Candidates CM's have always had a devastating effect on the battery of all my galaxy phones ( S, S3, S3 and Note 2) , from what i understand it was down to the proper samsung drivers not not being available to use with CM, is this the case with HTC too ? do other HTC phone CM roms have similar battery lift to the stock Roms?

CM too. Tried Sky Raider, but CM is just so clean and fast I had to switch back. I can live without a camera for a couple weeks
Interested to see the replies to this one as well - I would love to go to CM6, but losing the camera means too much to me right now (work related, sadly).
I tried out CM6 (Koush_Test) last night. The one interesting thing I noticed, was the battery was draining like crazy. The battery stat said the display was utilizing 75%.
I went back, due to not having the Camera... When you have kids, I need to be ready.. It was fun to mess with.
I am on Jager 1.8ota and stock kernel and I love it I was on his 1.8 with the hydra 1.13 kernel which is really great too!
Stock 2.1! I have overclocked/hacked every electronic device in my house that could possibly have it done except for my phone. I want to wait for the official Froyo OTA update then have a go at it (in the meantime I will just have to settle with jtagging my Xbox 360 and setting it up to run games off an external HD =).
Been using 1.2 yasr and have been really happy. I think i just like launcher pro though. Love to do cm6 but the camera is an issue for me as well. Official froyo will be welcomed.

Oxygen ROM on the Nexus-S is AWESOME. It is a pure vanilla stock Android style ROM, no bloatware, no carrier UI, but just the way Google meant Android to be. And it is crazy fast and smooth, with great battery life, can only imagine the Galaxy S2 would be out of this world with this ROM.

Well, look at MIUI-Galnet, they HAD to move away from XDA because of their donation schemes (Something to do with new devices) I think with Oxygen & DevNull it's just an agreement with the CM7 team since Oxygen is the same just a different framework. Not sure really.
But, all in all, I prefer AOSP always have, it's what I miss about my Nexus S & One basicalle

Not entirely true, the reasons Adamg moved away from XDA were the lack of moderation here and the 'dumb' questions being posted here. Those are also the reasons most devs move away here...

i totally agree! but my "problem" is, the SGS2 is just so freakin fast, i never had any speed issues on the stock rom and battery life isnt very different.... i WANT to use oxygen, but with this phone i would just get less features (no ukw-radio e.g.) :-/
(and if i dont want some crap/bloatware, i just remove/freeze it with titanium)
totally different story on other phones, Oxygen on my Desire was a total game-changer, just unbelievable what a difference it was compared to the stock htc rom!

Yes, this is the funny thing that I ended up using a Samsung ROM (Cognition) after trying all the other options simply because it is fast as well, but has all the extra features (most importantly - for me - the wide video format support and the hw accelerated browser). It seems that Samsung is the first manufacturer that finally starts to get the hang of cooking a functional and fast ROM .
I am using this rom and I think it is simple, fast, good on battery life. I will keep it for a while. Thanks to Adam and the poster.

I dont really agree with you..
I was using Virtuous ROM. It was pretty cool, but when i flash a new virtuous rom without wiping, my DHD sometimes restarts. So i don't know if it was because od no wipe, or in the rom, i flashed runny 1.4, and i am happy with it.
I love Sense, hate iPhone, so i hate something like MIUI or whatever
It only takes a few more minutes to wipe and it's gonna lessen your chances of problems so i'm not sure why you don't. I'm sure you needed to wipe when you flashed runny too so I guess that was what the problem was. Anyway I hear nothing but good things about it so all the best

Thats the cool thing about android you have the choices!
I'm currently on MIUI and really love the theming possibilities (want another launcher effect? just hit 2 buttons and switch from 2d iphone style to 3d sense 3 style ), the fully working bluetooth drivers and the music app is just perfect. And it was worth it just for putting on the iphone4 theme and showing it to my applefanboy buddy. muhaha the look on his face - prizeless.
But i'm missing some sense stuff as well. Especially the camera and the mail/weather app. You have to make compromises or look for replacements with some apps. I think ill stick with MIUI until HTC releases an official Sense 3.x version for our DHD

Looks pretty awful as far as lag goes. If there was a free version of NFS I'd try it out as a comparison but unfortunately $10 is way too much.
I've never been happy with any Sense based ROM. Always slow and atrocious battery life. CyanogenMod for me. Much smoother and more customizable. If you want to stick with Sense I really can't give a good recommendation. The day I left Sense for CM I never once looked back.

I've had my phone on with light use using tinys kernel since 8 this morning, It's 630p right now, and its at 70%. I would say that's great batt life.

Well, if she does have an HTC myTouch 4G, there are several choices.
One is a the stock rooted ROM w/ any one of several custom kernels.
Another is Android Revolution HD. There are two versions in the dev section, both of which are in the same thread and are great.
Energy ROM is also good, but she may not care for the look.
Also, there is InsertCoin v1.7.1. I'm running that one now and really like it.
Edit: Bas3balman and I are shamelessly promoting the port our team released. Haha.
