Hi all,
I'm torn between Desire HD and Galaxy S. Sure the SGS is older, no flash, gps bugs etc, but just had my DesireHD in my hand and it's way too big and heavy. Also review are saying poor battery life.
I don;t mind if i dont have the newest model, as SGS fits nicely in my hand, don;t care much about the flash.
Some questions:
1. Have the bugs been sorted for SGS i.e gps, lag etc with updates and custom roms here? I don't mind flashing as i have a TouchHD and i flash it often.
2. Do custom roms make it smooth and nice how it should be and based on peoples reviews here with Fixes many are happy with speed.
I know there's a lot going for SGS2 but don;t think that is coming anytime in next 6 months, which would give me plenty of tiem to accustom my self to Android from Winshite.
Cheers

1/ yes/no its not perfect for gps, lag is fixed with custom stuff
2/as per 1/ once fixed speed and all are pretty good
in a nutshell:
- gps isnt all that good even if its been vastly improved
- phone is very fast once fixed but battery life is slightly lower (should still be much better than the DHD in that area i guess..)
HTC Desire HD has inferior GPU, camera recorder, sound quality, display, etc..
I would recommend to wait a little.. For *an official large scale* Froyo release because the current JP6 (which was official for Scandinavia) suck in terms of performance.
If you browse a lot this can be very annoying. Applied voodoo lag fix => didn't fix stalls (lag) problems (yeah wiped data/cache)
Cons Froyo:
- browser issues: high RAM/CPU consumption. sometimes the phone stalls just having the stock browser opened on background. other big problem is the HIGH memory consumption combined with even less free RAM avaiable in Froyo. Many times the browser got self closed (even when it was active, in foreground!!) and/or applications in background (even the stock launcher)
- performance of stock launcher is not good if you have some amount of apps installed (eg: slide between apps pages, helicopter view, etc.. doesn't matter if you use live wallpers or not)
- laggy swype
- lags when scrolling in call history (I think I've got >= 500 entries)
- cannot say to much about gps, yesterday was the first time I've tested it in car.. and my position was completely not accurate. it may be also the software (igo) which lags a lot on froyo (in eclair it was ok), hardly you can set your destination.. it lags in menus too.
- again, even less ram available
Android issues:
- slow code execution (apps load time)
- high memory consumption
That's because of the internal design of Android... running the apps in a JVM . Why not native apps like WebOS, Maemo?
Those are the main issues I personally found very annoying in Froyo.. If you don't browse, don't write with skype (haven't tested with samsung keyword), don't use/like touch wiz lauchen, then the phone is quite good in terms of speed.
@bilboa1 aren't you experiencing those issues? Swithcing to a FS doesn't fix the bugs in the apps..
I have had my galaxy s for a couple of months and flashed to JP6 when it was out, I used it for a few days and then flashed back to eclair due to the same issues as you mention. Not being able to have anything 'minimized' to the background while browsing due to the amount of memory being used was a no no! Anyway, I have been seriously considering the desire hd myself, but the battery capacity has so far really put me off, I barely get 8 hours of life out of my galaxy on some days, so on a hd, it would be less than that I suspect. I keep looking around xda for posts to convince me not to get a desire hd, its slowly working, but not quite yet.
these are the fixes i applied for froyo which gives a (very) satisfying performance in my eyes:
(alls files can be found in the dev section)
- flash JM8 + 512 PIT
- flash JP6 + 803 PIT
- factory reset
- reboot in recovery
- flash ULF (universal lag fix)
- enable advanced lag fix ext4
- enable all tweaks
- enable BLN (backlight notification)
- enable root
- reboot - choose backup & restore (or not, since its factory, doesnt make a big diff), wait a bit
- copy battery mod for JP6 (version D for me) to /sdcard/
- copy stock android lock screen for JP6 to /sdcard/
- copy galaxy tab browser file to /sdcard/
- adb shell
$ su
# umount -oremount,rw /dev/block/stl9 /system
# cd /system/apps
remove some useless samsung apps to free space
replace the battery graphics
# cp /sdcard/framework-res.apk /system/framework/framwork-res.apk
do the same for lock screen, browser file.. (paths are specified, i don't remember them by heart)
# sync
# reboot
- in browser options, set the plugins to "on demand"
- in account sync options, disable auto sync (keep background data) - this alone doubles the battery life and doesnt make a real diff
- replace touchwizz by your launcher of choice, i personally use Launcher Pro Plus
- install "vignette" if you want higher quality pictures from the camera
about the gps:
- make sure you enable the function that let it use the wireless networks (agps)
- install compass and setup the compass as indicated when you start it, then quit
- enable sensors aiding for the gps, done
- it locks (very) fast
- its pretty accurate now
- it loses all satellites from time to time then relock so u lose a few seconds of tracking (the biggest/only real issue IMO)
enjoy
ps: the difference with the DHD, except hardware differences, is probably that the DHD won't neeed nearly as much handwork to work "properly".....
Thanks bilboa1 for your informative post but unfortunately this does not fix my problems.
I like TouchWiz launcher, it's very practical (used to be TouchPro fan too before ). Actually I find Samsung software implementations more useful per-total than HTC ones (HTC Sense, yes, I've been an HTCSense user in past)
Also, I've read that the galaxy tab browser lib doesn't fix the problem with high memory consumption, so didn't bothered to overwrite the file.
Browser has already plugins on demand. It doesn't make a difference if it's off or on-demand (in my tests with high memory consumption)..
If I disable auto sync how do I get my gmail, twitter, etc automatically? I've accidentally disabled it and didn't get any mail, twitter, etc automatically.
GPS lock is fast.. but not accurate here. Maybe it was the software (iGo)
Depends if you want a phone that just works or do you like tinkering and chance of file curruption every 3 weeks. Sgs schocking battery problems once you install a lag fix. In my experience when using oclf the sgs uses 15% of power per HR at Max of 3hrs usage on 3G. If using voodoo lag fix then power drains at 20-30‰ and about 2hr's at 3G. If I was you I would wait for something better and forget the sgs ever existed. I have heard the epic 4G is a good device with non of the sgs problems but sadly it's a cdma phone. Also HTC seems to release roms more frequently and there's better support for them. Also doesn't the desire HD use 2nd Gen snapdragon? Means clock for clock they (g2 @800MHz is said to be as fast in benchmarks as 1ghz hummingbirds )are faster and also froyo is already optimized for it unlike our poor hummingbird cpus
If I could I would in a second swap my sgs for a HTC desire HD or HTC g2
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
I have voodoo lagfix on eclair. My battery drains 1.3% per hour on standby with 3G/data/sync=ON and many widgets that update hourly like weather, stock, facebook, twitter.
Active use with screen on and internet surfing battery drain is about 23% per hour which is kind of normal. My Iphone 3GS/HTC Touch HD also drain around this amount during active use.
So those with huge drain, the problem lies somewhere else (not with lagfix)
Galaxy battery is not bad at all for heavy users. My phone uptime of 20 hours with 3 hours of active use + 1 hr of call+(sync/widgets etc).
Light use should last for 2 days.
Don't do it man, life's worth living!!!
Seriously though, I've tried every bloody fix out there, every last tweak for the last 3 months... And I'm selling this pos as soon as I find a good deal. Granted, sometimes it's fast, but then it crashes... Sometimes the gps works, But then it gets confused... The mic is total ****, but the screen is beautiful, so you have nice colours to look at while it randomly cracks out.
If you don't want to wait, get the dhd and a couple extra batteries. Or, for smaller hands just get a bloody iphone or one of the older desire variants.
This hardware's great, the dhd's is better... And the software works!!! Hear that samsung!? It actually works!!!... Aside from the proximity sensor...

Thanks a lot guys. Sorry to hear that basic problems are still persisting, even thought great effort has been made by community devs to iron them. I'll hold till next generation of phones come up in Q1 2011.
Cheers and good luck

Only phone I'd currently recommend is the iPhone 4. The SGS is still having some issues and doesn't work right out of the box. Guess we'll have to wait for gingerbread in order to get a version of android that just works.
I'm using stock kernel, no rooting, to lagfix, with latest available Firmware
I don't have any "lag" issue,
GPS works pretty good, fast fix, not that much "jerking around" and sharktooth when recording maps.
Camera is pretty much amazing, I can't realy beleive how much "night mode" works!
HD Video recording is pretty much tha bomb!
Works pretty sweet with my BlueTooth headset (S9-HD)
Gaming is amazing, fast and cool graphs!
it runs android, so you're not "controlled" by what the all mighty-all knowing Apple
So, I would definitively buy the same thing!
I don't know what some of these guys are talking about.
1. Have the bugs been sorted for SGS i.e gps, lag etc with updates and custom roms here? I don't mind flashing as i have a TouchHD and i flash it often.
GPS has not been 'perfectly' fixed. A lot of people report different results. It has never worked well for me. Fortunately, on a personal level, I have never become over-dependent on GPS and am generally good with reading maps. I can use the GPS to get a general fix of where I am and use my eyes to figure out where to go.
Aside from GPS however - I can't think of any bugs that haven't been fixed. Almost every custom ROM includes its own lagfix, all of which work perfectly. I use darkyy's ROM and it comes with Voodoo, which is absolutely brilliant.
2. Do custom roms make it smooth and nice how it should be and based on peoples reviews here with Fixes many are happy with speed.
Well, I kinda answered this above. The lagfixes are brilliant and do exactly what Samsung should have done themselves. My phone flies now without even needing a task killer.
--
I often say that I would always recommend one out of 3 phones to anyone that asks depending on how technical they are. If they are a casual user that likes the latest hardware and biggest screens - get the DHD. If they are also a casual user that perhaps would prefer a slightly smaller and more compact phone, get the Desire Z. If they are a techie and want the best of everything (minus GPSlol) - get the SGS.
You sound like a techie. Unless you absolutely need GPS, get the SGS.
jp6 deodexed, zipaligned, 327meg kernel, advanced lagfix ext4, all tweaks.....gives me insane performance! applications load up instantly, its just as quick as it can ever get! no crashes no instability
just wished samsung would give us a stock rom which is as good as this!
GPS still sucks....little laggy, and sometimes inaccurate...not totally unusable though. samsung sure screwed up on the hardware, theres no doubt about that

So basically SGS doesnt work correctly out of the box.
If I pay about 500euro for a phone, I definitly expect that it works flawless.
I wanted this phone badly, but after I have read all bad comments ill pass until they fix all bugs or maybe ill wait for another better Samsung phone (I love Super AMOLED)
i would go for the dhd...i have a sgs but to be honest its a great phone but samsung doesnt provide the support for their products...2.2 and a gps fix were supposed to come in september..then october...now november...the phone is only as good as the software on it, and while the sgs is a beast in terms of processor speed and screen, it lacks the support from samsung...it does lag, gps doesnt work at all for me....

I don't really notice a very high memory usage on the browser, maybe i don't browse enough i don't know
when you disable auto sync you still get email automatically (and instantly, via push), for the rest it depends on the apps settings, in my case they all still go get stuff every couple of hours
what sync disable however is contact synchronization, account settings, calendars, and things like that (= things i rly dont need sync more than once a week or smth personally, but i can imagine some ppl need their calendar sync to the minute)
in general battery issues are due to bad software installed on the phone, stock sgs battery life is pretty much incredible in my eyes (the lag bug is also pretty much incredible p)
ps: if i were to buy sgs again i'd do it no doubt. i can understand the less technically inclined going dhd. not without its flaws but no such thing as "lag bug" crap to fix hehe

For some reason i thought the phone id cheaper than that.
Anyway the sgs is perfect. The gps is not as bas as people say. U can still get a lock on and go whatever u want. But honestly. I never tried the gps more thsn once to check if its working and its fine for me.
However. For games. For screen. Nothing and i mean nothing csn come close to sgs. Best screen hands down. Best gpu. All u need to is add voodoo or whatever ur like and ur ready to go. I love the dhd but i am a movie. Gamesband muic junkie. For that the sgs is perfect. Dont let the 4.3 screen fool u on dhd. Its almost the samwle quality as hd2 "there are videos in youtube as a proof even "
I say get what u want but for me. I love the phone for its performance and screen. And galaxy s is perfect

Hi Guys,
Been reading this forum for quite some time and got the Tab just 12 days back. Now the things is, the Tab is fast overall but I noticed some LAG / performance hit as soon as I switch to a LIVE WALLPAPER. In the home screen, it's all good. But as soon as I pop open the app drawer / menu, I can instantly feel a drop in performance.
Was wondering, a) what might the reason be considering i've seen 600 mhz phones able to do the animations flawlessly b) If there is a fix for this issue?
Also, what is the recommended advice for charging the Tab? I mean, should I charge it as soon as it beeps or wait for about 3-5 % battery? Also, is it ok to keep it connected even after full charge? (because I charge it at night and unplug it when i wake up)
Thanks & Cheers!
For the lag i guess you could try the custom ROM from Development forum. As for charging, I typically charge every 2 days (few phone calls, Exchange sync, browsing, fb, Pandora and ocasionally movies). I would unplug it when it's full (even the power cord). Save the planet and your pocket
I've noticed the lag as well, and honestly can't stand it compared to my HTC Incredible which is flawless. The Samsung notification bar is especially laggy to me. However, I believe that installing a new ROM should fix it. Honestly I think the lag is coming from all the junk that Samsung installs on there. Personally I have a VZW tab and haven't had many options for other Roms (until lately), but overclocking it to 1.2 did help a bit. If you have a GSM tab you have tons of ROM options, so give them a try.
Two days I'm lucky to get a day fro
A full charge tips please .....o. Battery life increase

The lag thing is no big deal. So you have to wait a second. You should have seen what we put up with when computers were primative.
I'm on Roto's JMI custom Rom and can honestly say I don't ever notice any lag once the tab has booted up fully.
Thanks for all the replies guys! XDA never fails to disappoint
Could you please recommend me a custom rom which would a) address the lag issue b) is fast overall c) The battery life is one of the better ones?
I own a GSM Asian Tab with the following:
Baseband Version : P1000DDJJ1
Kernel Version : 2.6.32.9
Build number : FROYO.DDJK3
Now, I have rooted the tab using z4root and am using apps which require SU privileges but I am a NOOB nonetheless when it comes to modding or flashing a custom rom. I know, reading up on XDA is on my to do list but any crucial advises before i take the leap?
@quattr0
2 days! that's amazing! Literally, how much time does the screen remain on? I mean is it intermittent on like heavy usage? Out with the tips sir
@steveo11284
I am pretty sure you're right. Especially the Gallery by default sucks up the battery life even if I don't use it. (Using JustPictures, way better). You might want to check out an app called SystemApp Remover. Allows you to uninstall stock apps, not just the regular ones make sure you take the backup!
@kharmafish
Try out Juice Defender with Ultimate Juice add on. I gained atleast a few hours

The fact that there are ways of doing away with the lag keeps me curious mate I mean, isn't getting the max out of your device what everybody wants?

I have tried both and have had far fewer problems with Roto's roms. Although the quadrant score was almost double under Modaco's rom, in practice Roto's feels nippier - which reinforces what I've read elsewhere on XDA about quadrant score being no true guide to performance. Hope this helps

Have you tried different launchers? I think Launcher Pro is pretty quick. It replaces the default samsung launcher.
So i finally upgraded to Roto JMI v2 Way better than my stock rom (DDJK3) read blazing fast
@rangercaptain
Tried out a few. Liked ADW Launcher
Cheers!
I would also recommend 2 apps:
automatic task killer is a great app that automatically closes apps that are left running in the background and you exclude those you want to leave running.
Juice defender is great for extending battery life by automatically turning things off for you like cellular data when you are connexted to wifi.

Hello all, first post here after reading for quite some time
I researched alot and decided to buy this phone because I concluded it was the best, performance, quality, resolution, etc
I have the phone for a week now and I don't feel happy with it, overall I see the phone is not really smooth, it frequently freezes for like 2 seconds when opening or closing an application, I was quite happy until before I installed some apps, like modern combat 3 and aftermath xhd, I can't install those via market because it says it's not compatible with my device, so I tried them out because I was too curious to see its performance, and I'm very disappointed...
modern combat 3 is unplayable, the menu is laggy, the game feels like its constantly loading something, it's choppy, I played only half of the first level because I couldn't go on anymore. Aftermath XHD was laggy at first, but now I'm at the sniper level and I had to give up, it's unplayable, when a shot is fired it lags so much it stops for like 3 seconds. I read all over the internet that those games run smooth on defys, so what's the problem here?
I'm at stock rom and kernel (N7000UBKK1, 2.6.35.8-N7000UBKK3, GINGERBREAD.UBKK3), I'm not really into flashing, but after reading over the games thread people saying it's smooth and working fine I think it's my only hope, if it doesn't fix it I guess my hardware would be faulty then.
I'm starting to think that the internal disk is the bottleneck, and I'm not sure if updating can turn a non-playable game smooth, so has any of you guys ever experienced this or been through this, can give some advice or based on your experience point out if it is possible to solve this problem?
thanks in advance

Hey, after using the Iphone 3gs since its release I must say Im impressed with both Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note BUT the random freezez and input lag that appears every now and then is just frekking annoying. Even with custom romz and different kernels this happens atleast 10 times everyday. As a techie guy I like the freedom that android gives me compared to the endless jailbreaking and ego behaviour by apple. However I'd say android devices must with the current hardware fix this type of problems since in the end user experience is the most important and If I spend 600 euros on a phone I'm sad to say that touchwise it still lacks a lot but after playing with it now for two weeks I have to say that I've gotten used to it. Samsung should stop pushing so many devices and focus on making the android software more stable, better touch input and reduce the frekking lag, dual core or not.
This forum is the best I've found and has everything a phablet nerd needs
Samsung Galaxy S2 - Stock Rom 2.3.5 with Launcher Pro (faster than the note with standard settings!!!!)
Samsung Galaxy Note - RocketRom V9 KKA 2.3.6 Launher Pro, CPu 1,6 mhz (still!! laggs sometimes)
Yeah, the Note is not polished enough yet. But don't lose faith - it will get better once we get ICS, shouldn't be that long. Right now it's up to you - you can improve it noticeably by flashing, tweaking and overclocking. I did that and I don't look back it ain't perfect but good enough for me.
KL3 soft + Abyssnote 2.5 kernel + OC (1650) + either lulzactive governor and vr scheduler (very responsive OS) or ondemandx gevernor and sio scheduler (smoother 3D games). These are settings that do the trick for me.

It's also not compatible with everyone else's device, and people are reporting the game runs fine, how so?
If your game data is in your external SD Card, that may well be the problem
Anyhow, the Note is a niche device with a flavor of early adopting, since it's the first phone with this big a screen (the streak was a tablet, if I'm not mistaken?) and because it's one of the three first with a HD resolution.
What does that mean? That many things that work flawlessly on lesser devices won't work here simply by lack of dev support. One example? The gameloft games, my favorites. None of them are officially supported, and I haven't managed to make them work unofficially.
One thing is for sure: Android required flashing, period. The Defy is crap without any flashing, so is the Atrix, and now the Note is. At the very least, put on the CWM recovery, which takes about 60 seconds of your time, and try the custom Kernel that is swimming lonely down in dev section that allows you an OC of 1.7ghz. See if that helps with the lagging.

Don't worry with this kind of responses, you'll get them here sometimes. This is XDA, forum 100% dedicated to tinkering with phones so who cares what's compatibile with what. Make it work and enjoy.
This game is about 1.4GB if it has been installed on your internal memory you will definitely run out and and your phone will struggle,go to Settings/Applications/Manage Applications/Remove To SD card.
Just another boring witch hunt thread (yawn).
thanks a lot for the replies guys, you guys really helped a lot, I'm a lot more confident now and anxious to start flashing!
I got one question before starting the flashing process, is the JIG dongle for the S2 compatible with the note? I can't find the note JIG anywhere around here
I thought mw3 didn't work with the newest gingerbread yet.
Like the above poster said, try kl3. Little lag I had disappeared.
GALAXY NOTE
Hi guys. I have been on android since 2011 and ever since I have been modding my phones and devices. One thing I found out is that when you pack your device full of goodies and games and apps, your device can start to get laggy and the battery drains faster.
As for the Galaxy tab 3 I saw that it gets quite laggy when some apps are installed....
Here's what I do to manage and Maintain my tab:
Battery life:
1.) The number 1 thing I do when I unbox and setup my device is install Battery Doctor.
-This app I found charges your device in a certain way to prolong battery survival and it does it in 3 steps.
-This app also has modes that you can turn on that you can customise to a setting of your desire.... it comes with 3 as standard. Extreme mode and super saving mode helps a lot when your not using it for a while.
- Lastly it has optional widgets that you can put on home screen that optimises the battery, cleans apps/cache.
2.) Another one that you may find as useful is MobileCare. This app has a battery saving mode, App manager and Task killer if your are looking at JUST battery. This app offers a much simpler way to reduce battery drainage from the click of a switch power saver mode is enabled.
Performance Enhancing Apps
So to have optimum performance without rooting your device or overclocking here is what I use:
1.) MobileCare - As well as battery saving there a few other tweaks it has that I didn't mention above....
-Game Speeder- this basically give you a choice of the app you wish to run and it will basically optimise the app/game for you so it runs as smooth as possible.
- It also has a built in Antivirus/Anti-theft feature which also speeds and improves performance if there are viruses or ads slowing you down.
- Task killer- this app basically kills all apps and processes so the ram is nice and fresh.....1gb RAM can get packed sometimes.
2.) Memory Booster- This apps really helps as well.
-It features a Quick boost mode when you just want free space and instant performance.
-It also shows proof of it working in the form of a monitor and a diagram showing ram before and after.
-This app also features its own task killer and a boost log.
-This app is really useful because it comes with some really nice small compact widgets that you can do the quick boost function and task killer from a simple tap on the home screen instead of actually opening the APP itself.
Please feel free to add on to this list....I wrote these because they were the most efficient in terms of being able to use them seemlessly.
This thread is ideal for those who havn't got root access and want to maintain their tab 3's.
I will upload links Shortly.
edit-----I know the Task Killer mentioned dosnt kill ALL the apps and processes. However the point of that app is to close all of apps and processes that wouldnt harm your system if they were closed, so you have you normal open apps that need to be closed and then some background apps and clears cache etc.
Not bad, but rooting is so easy and you get much more control.

Yup.. But even after rooting... BAttery doctor really improves battery!
I use juice defender ultimate and du battery saver pro. Best battery saving app. The best contributor is lux auto brightness( paid version). Brightness is very crucial for saving battery. Ex. At night our tabs tend to be more brighter. You can even set the brightness for any light level your in.

I use juice defender ultimate and du battery saver pro. Best battery saving app. The best contributor is lux auto brightness( paid version). Brightness is very crucial for saving battery. Ex. At night our tabs tend to be more brighter. You can even set the brightness for any light level your in.

LOL I totally forgot about that one. I liked that app for its quick features... most of it was paid though..
Task killers are useless and in fact do more harm than good. Android is quite good at managing its own memory and doesn't need the help. Task killers tend to stay in memory which defeats the purpose, and 99.9% of the time the tasks they kill automatically restart anyway. They are not at all necessary and should be avoided.

I do and also dont agree having task killer why? They dont kill every single app u wanted and thus free only 5MBs of ram. Most apps like Advance Task Killer do the job well but the app itself takes the memory which makes it a disadvantage having a third party app task killer but then they do free up memory very well. Until now I havent found an app which has very less ram consumption and frees up memory very well.

They already have a task killer/ram manager already built in.
Simply holding down the middle button brings up all your resent apps with the option to kill all on the right, and on the left an extension which shows among others a RAM Manager.

so laggy
Hi guys, I just got the tab 3 8.0, and I like most part of it but the performance is seriously bad..I have restored ask my apps from Google server and while running apps and switching between them, I can't take all the lags it has. I just got it today so I can return it if I want but I'm wondering if rooting this device actually gains much performance improvements. I used to have a galaxy s2x, which has a similar if not worse spec than this tablet, and I don't know if I was running rooted version of touchwiz or not but the performance was pretty good. This tablet is much worse. A simple reboot fixes the lag but after a few hours, as I use it, I notice the stutters while using it. I just had a serious lag in Google plus app, it was stuttering so bad, but it came back to smooth after 5 seconds.
So installing the custom Rom available for tab 3 8.0 improve the performance significantly? I know there are not many ROMs for tab 3 8.0, so any user of this device just rooted the tab and tweak it themselves to gain performance improvements? Not just little bit, but a lot.
Thanks!

Mine is not laggy in the slightest, in fact it's quite zippy. Instead of blaming the device, look at your apps. It's possible one of them is the culprit. If a reboot helps, it sounds like you have too much stuff loaded in memory. How much free space do you have?
I know what you guys mean...... I know they dont kill all the apps....BUT it still makes a difference.....even if it kills off 200mb of cache and apps.... It makes a dramatic improvement to performance if you are running on a a stock rom! Not all of the task killers work as effectively as eachother I admit but some apps are really good for a quick time boost
I'll chime in. I always read that task killers are useless, because Android inherently does a good job of managing memory or what not. I personally dislike Android's autokiller; the more RAM you have the more it will work non-obtrusively, but it generally has a tendency to kill apps I don't want killed, when they don't need to be killed, and it does nothing at times to kill apps I don't want running.
What I do is I use Minfree Manager (I run it manually on boot, I'm sure there's a file somewhere you can edit which makes the app unnecessary)) to tweak the auto-killer, such that it doesn't kill apps except when absolutely necessary. My previous phablet, I used ZDBox to kill non-whitelisted apps every time I turned the screen on (and I manually killed whitelisted apps when applicable). This worked well and I only have good things to say about ZDBox, the older version was very lightweight and easy to use. Unfortunately ZDBox's task killer is incompatible with the Galaxy Tab 3 (at least my T211).
Thus far with the T211 I have been using Super Manager to kill non-whitelisted apps (like Google Play Services, etc) on standby. I am not sure whether it kills them, it only claims to "clean memory." Yes, they all start back up and memory usage increases quickly once again relative to the blacklisted apps, but this still prevents these apps from running non-stop and accumulating RAM usage, and even if that is meaningless, it at least serves a purpose by flashing a note in my status bar every time I toggle my screen on and off, regarding how much free RAM I have and how many apps are running. Yes the service runs in memory constantly, but that can't possibly be causing a problem because everything is fairly speedy.

I know what that guy means though..... I was running stock rom with stock kernal on my 7.0 and it was fine until I started downloading apps for it....It got to a point where no matter how much I overclock to performance it would still lagg even when i closed all my apps.
However I downloaded a custom rom with all these tweaks and now im running those same apps I had before running as sweat as a nut without even overclocking.:silly:
Hi mate, you are using my ROM, right?
I just quote, so other users get to know RocketTab as well...
And I'm still working on further improvements...
My Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 runs great from stock, but since rooting and using arshull's kernel (latest release) with the addition of trickster mod app, I am getting super snappy performance! With the ability to tweak cpu and gpu settings and build.prop tweaks I couldn't be happier. Battery life is good and I am a heavy user and lag is nonexistent in games, even some of the heavy duty ones.
BtW, a big thanks to arshull for his development with the GTab 3 8.0, and this forum and all its contributors! :good:

well keep in mind the 8.0 has an extra .50 of RAM. So that does effect the performance. I'm having the same issue. I have the S3 with 1.5 of RAM and never have any issues with lagging or apps running out of memory. Im wondering the same thing as the OP if a root would benefit this tablet in the way of performance.
If anyone has a 10.1 that they have rooted could you post any results or performance improvements that you saw from it?

Greetings All,
First post here so I hope I don't f#@% up.
I know there've been a million threads closed about this because everyone's setup and usage is different. I found it really frustrating to not get an 'answer', thinking to myself ‘why not compare apples with apples?’ ie stock vs custom ROM with the same usage. So I thought I'd share my experience for anyone else frustrated with the lack of “The Answer”
I bought a refurbished (new screen, battery and back cover) SGS2 GT-I9100 unlocked with Vodafone stock ROM. I was getting the battery warning at 4 hours (!) after a few calls and texts, about 15 min of FB, same for Gmail (WiFi on/Data off at home), and about an hour of driving with Google Navigation and playing music (Wifi/Data/GPS on). Battery usage showed that next to the screen at #1, GPS/Navigation was the biggest drain followed by playing music. All the other stuff was insignificant by comparison.
By uninstalling and disabling everything Samsung, Vodafone, and stuff I didn’t use, it stretched to 6 hours. 50% improvement but still unacceptable as I wanted to get at least a work-day plus travel ie 10 hours.
So a custom ROM was required which started the saga of rooting. Did hours of research and unsuccessfully tried a few through a Samsung developers’ program (Odin?). I finally resorted to spending money and sent the IMEI# to online services. Some said the phone was rootable, some not. I paid my twenty-five bucks to 1-ClickRoot and it didn’t work (but I used it to root my wife’s Motorola Mileston2) and finally rooted the SGS2 with Framaroot (I think it was either free or the price of a can of Coke). Couldn’t have been simpler – downloaded the file with the browser, explored to the (apk?) file and opened it, tried the first 2 vulnerability options unsuccessfully and on the third, success. Rebooted – voila.
I tried a few custom ROMs that, while they were highly recommended and had all the customisable bells and whistles and ‘great battery life’, I didn’t like the UI. Plus I just wanted a ‘normal’ phone with a good camera (I’m a hobby photographer) which could also browse the web, use GPS navigation, play music, have custom ringtones and pics for contacts, and the ‘important’ stuff for me at the bottom of the home screens - phone, messaging, contacts, browser and apps. I didn’t need to be able to customise virtually everything on the phone and some of these ROMs were 400-900MB compared to under 200MB for most.
Which brings me to CyanogenMod 10.1 (CM10.1). The UI is closer to standard (plus many more options) so I found the transition from the stock ROM easy. And with the same usage PLUS an EXTRA hour of Google Navigation/GPS/music – 10 hours easy with 20-33% battery left (!). Added a high capacity battery (2600mAh over 1800mAh factory, same physical size) and I now go from 0700 to 0100 the following day regularly – 18 hours with 1-9% battery left.
Hope this helps…
Cheers,
Ferenc
25 bucks for rooting
Eek i get about 5hrs + screen on time wid ics 4.0.4 xwlpt wid speedmod kernel....
Btw since u are hobby photographer.. The camera app on cm10.1 sucks when compared to that of the stock...so does the picture quality ...
No regrets here??
Best battery would be NeatROM +Apolo Kernel IMO
I've got two ROMs that deliver really nice battery life:
1. XWKE7 2.3.3 Samsung Stock (somehow it doesn't deliver such a good battery life now)
- This once got me through 3 days of regular usage with roundabout 10% left. Somhow "Android OS" drains me now, so I get two days maximum.
2. CM10.1 stable + DorimanX 9.14 kernel
- Got a tip about this combo from a friend, and well, it rocks. If you want an up-to-date version of android and great battery life, choose this.
There is various things you can do.I use rooted stock rom, running custom kernel and have all the crap stripped out.
I find custom roms better in some things and worse in others=overall not worth it for me.
You try what you like, but a GB rom c/w speedmod should be good.
That 25 bucks though...
Best Combo would be NeatROM (Extra-Lite) JB + Apolo Kernel 4.13 (Extreme V2, if possible for your phone and won't reboot)
weirdly enough but best power consumption I ever had on SG2 was with CM11 from 10-Dec-2013 by Wayland_ACE
(I've used mostly CM nightlies starting from 7.2)
Later versions from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2597199 much worse for some reason...
Not enough time to investigate fully yet, but BetterBatteryStats shows very similar picture...
Now just flashed this one - http://download.cyanogenmod.org/get/jenkins/57551/cm-11-20140202-NIGHTLY-i9100.zip .... we'll see...
CM 11 with ART runtime solved all my leakages during sleep mode. (Some apps like "stocks" were draining power when Dalvik was used)
CM11 nightlies seem to be good and stable, the only issue is: phone doesn't enter a deep sleep after charging(stuck on 200MHz). Shut down & power up solves, yet very annoying issue.
One thing, GB tops in battery life...
But i dont like it(GB theme is ugly)

Thanks for your response Doc
Twenty five bucks is cheap for a root Ok, it was 2am and I was desperate to root my phone after 18 hours of research over a coupla'days and repeated attempts which never ended up with SuperUser in my Apps drawer. I know better now...
Tonight I have 33% battery left after 12hrs/4.5hrs screen on - pretty happy...
Funny you say the cm10.1 camera app sux - yeah sure the colours are a bit over-saturated (but gee it makes for pretty pictures ) but so far i've found the lag between shutter-press and shot, and Auto White-Balance the best so far, other than Fast Burst Camera which for me is too low res for anything other than phone screen or Facebook/YouTube small window viewing on PC. I take a lot of pics of my happy 4yo daughter who stubbornly refuses to smile 'properly' 'at' the camera and her most delightful smiles are at the top of a swing which has been pushed a bit too hard (I'm getting quite good at predicting the lag now, but MANY missed pearls). I've installed Camera 4.2 for panorama shots (can't remember what the google name is) and find it has too few options for me (particularly white balance) and much the same lag. You sound like a bit of a camera app connoisseur - any suggestions for no lag (I mean really, it's digital, can't you capture it NOW?)/accurate white balance/good colour saturation? I really only got a mobile phone when the cameras got good enough to 'replace' a point-and-shoot, so camera is a biggy for me
Cheers,
Ferenc
okay... still using CM11 nightlies, finally can leave the phone not in charger overnight and still use it next day.
average charge loss (radio and wifi on) is 2 to 4% per hour, some syncs are enabled. Also ART(supposedly unsupported by CM) enabled.
All is smooth.
@ferenczoltan - u r a camera pro ... I m a noob in terms of camera and i can only look for end user comparison points like touch to focus or image blurriness and few more... For me the stock camera app seems to more hardware dedicated..
As for rom .. 4.5hrs screen on time and still 1/3rd juice left? 2000mAh battery ..right?
Edit - saw ur old.reply... its 2600mAh
I like this thread. I would suggest adding a poll to it so that users can vote for the best battery life rom.
I've been trying a lot of roms with the goal to find one that that has a good battery life and even if some roms are better that others none are excellent. It makes me laugh when I read that you judge a rom on its built-in apps (camera...) since you can instal all the apps you need (like a better camera on xda or even on the market.
I don't know if I'm the only one but I get the feeling that the "out of the box" rom and kernel gave me the better results but I won't go back to full stock, that's for sure.
Currently on : Neat extra lite + Apollo V2

To be more precise...stock rom camera libs are much more better as compared to custom ones. no matter which app I use in custom roms the quality is still inferior when compared to stock ..
And yes u r right .. out of the box combo is the best m on stock rom 4.1.2 deodexed zipalign rooted and wid a secure kernel (my own kitchen made rom)
Wizzedkat
Guys has anyone using Wizzedkat rom?
Battery life on that rom is terrible...had to revert back to slimsaber 4.4.2
Haven't tried deodexed stock roms yet. On KK, the best battery life was on beanstalk, AOSB and Cyan fox. Amazing deep sleep battery life for AOSB and beanstalk. Stock kernel.
Hey,
I also had battery problems on my previous rom so I went looking for another rom... I ended up with Chameleon rom, it is based on stock samsung(4.1.2[emoji20]) firmware with pure aosp look (everything related to samsung is replaced by aosp apps except the camera) it also has aokp ROM Control included so you are able to tweak the rom and the best part is the screen time... 4 hours on a 2 year old stock samsung battery
