Does the battery have a "break in" period? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I got my GS4 yesterday and charged it to 100% last night for the first time. Today I'm at 62% battery with only 1h 15m screen time. Is there a break in period? This seems kind of bad to me. I've used that hour looking at Tumblr a little, reading the news with Firefox Beta a little. Some light texting. Four songs on Spotify over Bluetooth during my commute.

The first two days were disappointing for me...then by the fourth or fifth day the battery lasted like a champ.

I'm experiencing the same issue, 31% 13h 27 min on time, 3h 2 screen time

My battery came pre charged @ 60%
Charged it and used it for about 17 hours with 4 hours screen time and it still had like 30 - 40 %
But ... I'm charging my phone that was @40 % and it's taking over 4 hours to charge that 60% ....

I saw improved battery life after a few days on both of my S4 so I would assume yes it needs at least a few days to break in.

Yup, both mine took maybe 3 full charge-discharge cycles.

What's wrong with my battery?

Hi. My phone has been on for 18 minutes and the battery is already at 89%... Wifi, auto sync, background data are all switched off. Brightness is at zero. Can anyone give me some advice? Should I contact samsung?
Thanks guys.

do you have a Live Wallpaper?
those that moves, animated, 3D, whatever you want to call it
please dont forget that the battery is weaker in the first few days/1 week, and then, when you drain it down - charge it up several times it will be better and better.
For example mine was at 48% when I bought it, I went to a bar right after it and shot several pictures, shared it via email, etc, and like 4 hours later, it was down to 17%. At home I recharged it fully, the other day it was definetly stronger, but I still had to recharge it in the evening. After the 5-6th recharge, now I can use it for 2 and a half days with some wifi, 15-20 short calls per day and listening to music.
Thanks for the replies. Have you guys noticed that every 20% or so = 1 hour of screen time on lowest brightness? My phone had about 5 hours of screen time over about 14 hours before it died. Is that ok?

That doesnt sound so anormal to me.
The display is the biggest battery consumer.
Most of the people here manage to use their phone 2-3 days but most of them use the display only 2-3 hours
After few battery cycle your phone should be able to last 7-10 hours of continuous display
damn 7-10 hours of continuous display? only getting 5 atm.. lets see.. ive had about 4 battery cycles so far. have had the phone for a week now. hope it gets better then.

Amazing batteries

Xoom and honeycomb truly have the best battery life I have ever seen. I have been using mine for at least 15 hours straight and my batteries are still at 53% left. I've been using this extremely heavily with 3g on for like 10hrs and wifi for the rest of the time....gaming, web browsing, emailing, pulse reading, remote connection, and even some video!
According to my batteries,
Xoom been on batteries for 15hrs 24minites
Display 79% - 3hrs 57 min
Android OS 6% - 53 min
Tablet idle 3% - 12 min
Browser 2% - 18 min

Agreed. The battery life on this thing is amazing, way beyond what I expected.
Been playing with it on and off all day at work, now, 13 hours later, I got 71%left. SICK.
I've been really happy with it too. Had it at work yesterday. I brought it to work at 90%. Connected my bluetooth headphones to it, streamed Pandora over wifi through the device to my headphones non-stop for 8 hours. Used it for checking personal mail and a little bit of browsing so the display was probably on for an hour of that time. Got home and the battery was at 65%. Excellent!
I feel like mine doesn't get nearly the battery life that you guys are talking about...using it constantly with the screen brightness turned all the way down it seems to be getting roughly 10 hours of continuous use on wifi.
Are you all rooted? I don't think that would matter but it seems as though im a little dissapointed in the battery life where everyone else is stunned. I had the screen off last night at around 50 % and this morning at around 11 it was at 11%.
Should I be worried?
there should be multiple threads on this!
THE BATTERY LIFE IS INCREDIBLE!
14hrs and with that included
5hrs display on (over 75% brightness if not full)
1hr20minutes on google talk video!!!!!!!
(5minutes of wich i tethered my nexus s and used my 3g rather than wifi..which by the way was both just amazing) seriously, i kept switching back and forth with the camera to mess around with my sister...simply amazing.
2hours browsing
45minutes movie
28% battery remaining!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
**** MY MOM!!!!

Dude, that sounds about right. If you are saying you used it for 10 hours continuously with the display on (which is easily the biggest drain) then you did well!

Hate to be an ass, but having the display on for 4 hours only, clearly shows you haven't been using it for 15 hours straight.

lol. This made my giggle.
Anyway, maybe he was refering to having apps running (ie, pandora, browser, etc) with the display off for the rest of the time. Granted, the display pulls the most battery usage, but the device can still be in "use" with the display off.

Valid point.
What's the best way/time to charge?
How and when do you guys/gals usually charge your Xoom?
Plug it in every night to charge overnight
When it's almost dead (<10%)
Plug it in whenever possible
Other
Just wondering if any of these "techniques" will affect battery life in the long run!
overnight to charge usually. i havent been able to kill the batteries during normal usage.
Had mine off the charger for over 48 hours. Just put it on the charger this morning with battery at 10%

I'm blown away by the battery life on my Xoom. I left my charger at home on my last trip and went 3 days without charging, with moderate use I still had 20% when I got back home.
I personally charge every night, but I really don't have to. I use it at work, check emails, take notes during meetings, etc. Screen is prob on 4-5 hours a day. When I get home, more browsing, maybe some music. When I finally get to bed, I usually have >50% battery.
The batter is so good, I basically solved my one big gripe, which is power button. During a meeting when I know I'll take notes intermittently, I simply set the screen to never go off. It does kill the battery, but I have still never had a problem getting through a day.
The 2nd day I had the Xoom I stress tested the battery, used it almost the entire day, barely put it down. Got through 10hrs with 20% battery left, browsing on WiFi, some gaming, etc. Last night, I went to the American Airline Center to see the Stars, about 3 and 4 hours of hockey(went overtime then shootout) and only used about 20% battery in that place, which is usually a horrid battery sucker on 3G on my Droid.

Amazing battery

I flashed bionix nexgen recently and it is smooth and very stable. I added bali kernel and right now im at 29% battery left with my battery status reading 2days 14hr 34m 22s . Of course I have a 3000 battery but in telling you with other Rome I never got long life like this.

I always ask how long the screen on time is when every one get "a good battery life"
No matter which rom I tried the screen on time is only around 2 hours when it died
Juicedefender Ultimate. It really works.
I'm on trigger been unplugged for 17h and 24m and screen on time of 1h 51m and have 32% left, but that's with brightness cranked up to 100%

Yeah I was pretty impressed with the battery life on bionix though I haven't tried the Bali kernel yet. Currently running CM7, 5-11-11 nightly. Unplugged 14 hours 10 minutes, screen on 2 hours 30 minutes, 20% left. Not exceptional but probably the best time I've gotten on a CM7 Vibrant build.
its pretty easy to distinguish how you got it
1. 3000 mah battery (double stock)
2. probably 20 +/- hours worth of it is when its in sleep mode (you're asleep and your phone hardly drains any battery)
3. your screen on time is probably less than 4 hours (assuming its double the 2 hours screen on time you get achieve on a stock battery)
Absolutely, those facts are all true. I am not trying to proclaim heavy duty use here. Im just encouraged to see the ability to go so long unplugged. I have done quite a bit of surfing, texting, youtube and calls. Im at 20% right now at 3days 10 minutes.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I have found out that my battery lasts about 8 hours if I have gps and wifi on. If i turn those off I get about 28 hours.
Also when I first got my vibrant I had signal booster stickers on it and those killed the battery like in 2 hours and made the device real hot for some reason.
stock battery, trigger 3.2
with a stock battery, and stock trigger, no modifications, I get 15-23 hours usage, more than enough for a whole 11 hour work day. Battery calibrated with the battery calibrate app

9% left total up time: 85hrs 31m bali kernel wins for me! Of course with the amazing bionix nexgen sweetness.

How long does it take for the battery to calibrate?

I think that's what you call it, anyway. I've had my phone since Wednesday and am getting about 3 hours of screen time/12 hours of battery life total (it gets me through a school day). Most people are saying that it tops out around 4 and half hours, which I have yet to see. So how long did it take your Nexus 4 to finally reach the maximum battery strength? Thanks!

Lithium batteries can't be calibrated. They work 100% from the first charge.
What may not work correctly is the battery full indicator, so for example it might say 20% left then suddenly shut down without warning, or show 1% left but still keep going for ages. You can calibrate this indicator by charging to full and letting it run until the phone shuts down for a flat battery, it only takes one cycle like this for it to be correct.

BATTERY LIFE: Screen On Time

It's amazing how much we actually use our phones in a given day! Rate this thread to express how many hours of screen-on time you can get on the Note5 before depleting the battery.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I usually get around 3.5-4 hours of screen on time before the phone needs a power-up.
So today is one of my heavy usage days. This is how it goes pretty much. Wake up around 6 am get, get on my phone, check notifications, hop on a few social games, get on social media, watch videos from social media, check my favorite website, get on some games, check some more websites, battery gets a little low so I charge up, and while it's charging I get my day started.
That's heavy usage for me and thats what I did all day today so far. Here's some screenshots just prior to me writing this post, tell me what you think.
Now some might think it's bad, but I've been on my phone pretty much non stop.
i'm getting 30-40 min more than the S6 edge ussually 4 hours screen on time, auto brightness, mobile data, wifi, 3 gmail sync, Facebook and messenger...I probably wouldn't get this phone if it wasn't for the quick charge ability.
I am very happy with battery life. I don't game and I don't watch tons of YouTube and I'm connected to a WiFi network most of the day. But this is the best in terms of battery life of any phone i have ever had, including the one plus one. Typically get 8 to 10 hours screen on time but I've gotten as high as 12 before. Auto brightness, location disabled most of the time. Stock, 200+ apps disabled with package disabler pro.
Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk
Averaging 5-7 hours on a busy day, everything is turned on except for a few bloat apps which are disabled.
I dont understand how you use you phone for 12 hours in a day..Do you have a job? I will get up at 7am and talk maybe for an hour on my phone and have 3 hrs max screen on time before I end my day at 10 pm with 45% battery left..more or less.
I'm seeing about 7 hours SOT. Auto brightness, nothing disabled, syncs on.
Sent from my SM-N920I using Tapatalk
Its impossible for 12h SOT.. can you share some screenshoot for sot 12h without charging from 100% until 1%.. i dont belive if no screen shoot..
My device is on battery for 4 hours 37 minutes 51 seconds since last charge.
SOT is 58 minutes 36 seconds.
My battery percentage is 74%.
Is this normal or bad ??
I purchased my phone for yesterday and charged it till full. I never charge for continuous 8 hours.
Is this normal or bad ? Shall i charge it for 8 hours ?
Typical days my battery only lasts about 12-13hours before its sub 10%. Some days it's better but typical office days are rather poor battery life from past android and iOS devices with similar use. Attached are my thumbnails. As you can see I am only getting 2 hours of screen on time. It def appears I have an issue with my Moto 360 using excessive battery and I am not sure why as most things are disabled on the watch and the watch battery is usually north of 75% when I goto bed.
Ever since I reset my phone back to factory resettings (rooting caused my phone to slow down), i've been experiencing some great battery life and smoothness(obviously)
6 hours SOT with 7% left. 1 day and 6+ hours of regular usage, nothing too heavy.
YRAJ23- Thats perfectly normal. It should come out to around 4 hours of SoT. You can charge the phone for 8 or more hours because it knows when to stop charging. You cannot overcharge any modern smartphone.
U should get at least 5hrs sot unless playing games and watching YouTube! Disable Samsung and Google bloats like Google+ and use Greenify app from Oasis Feng on play store to hibernate most of your downloaded apps which cause battery drain. Put your brightness in the 40-60% and if possible ideally in the 25% range indoors!
Ive been debating picking up a note 5 now that is avail in Canada in 64gb and silver but reading through this has me reconsidering.
I get better battery life from both my current devices and without being able to swap batteries 4 to 5hrs SOT is not ideal given my lifestyle/ work schedule

Fairly normal 2.5-3.5 hours on weekdays, bc school WiFi drains battery like ****. On weekends typically average 3.5 on 3G/LTE because reception where I live isn't exactly top notch. At home however, 5-6 hours is pretty much the norm, bc my home WiFi rocks.
I normally get 15-16 hours on battery with 4-5 hours of screen on time. i did a video playing a game and timing it. if you want to check it out here from the video you'll see depending on your settings i could get between 4-6 hours of onscreen time with goat sim running.

Exact same here, yet I see these people with 6, 7 even 8 hours of screen time on one charge. How? Are they sitting there with WiFi and the cell radio turned off, just watching clips and doing offline stuff? I just don't understand how they can manage to pull that many hours out of the battery. I struggle to break past 4 hours. But 8? Freaking double? I'm not buying it.
