End Of Xperia X8? Legacy Device? Forum will be moved? - XPERIA X8 General

It's a sad thing but. What should be done has to be done.
Xperia X8 will progress into a legacy devices.
So does the forum in any time from now
It's been around 2.5 years ago (It also my first android phone)
Running MiniCM 10 on top of the naa kernel's
Which sparked when racht, dx, & others which wasn't mentioned or currently in inactive state was here in the first place.
NOW, Original developer/development/'s of MiniCM10, 9, 7 & GDX has been literally in the state of "not so much of activity" (In fact, GDX has made a statement already.)

It's been over a year when me and B.Jay took over the GingerDX ROM from doixanh. Through these months our team evolved and we gained much experience, but every story has an end, so does GingerDX.
Why we decided to discontinue this project? Well, there are few factors and I'll try to tell them, as we always treat, you, our dear users, fair.
1. 3/4 of our members don't use X8 right now. We have switched to some more powerful devices, as X8 was our first Android phone, but it was released 2.5 year ago (you know how fast the Android world runs).
2. We have no time at the moment. Our real lives strike back with many problems and we have to earn some money for living
3. The 2.6.32 plan has failed as the lack of time and some serious problems with compatibility were serious reasons to abandon this project.
4. We would like to try something new with Jellybean and X8 is way too old to run it on an acceptable level (I know some users will disagree with me, but that's a fact)
It's getting sentimental, but it's really a hard decision for us to make, but we were thinking about it for a long time. I want to thank few people who always supported us:
@SMillerNL - for a big donation and being a great admin of our site
@GermainZ - for being a friendly guy, who always makes us happy
@laufersteppenwolf - for maintaining a Q&A thread
@shineworld - for his technical support and being a good friend
@NinoRapis - for donation
And all users of our small ROM. Without you having it would've been pointless.
Our sources are still on our Github, so feel free to make use of them. Thank you and see you around!

And I seek naa successions in developing his new project now [3.x KERNEL] [Mini/Mini Pro/Active/LWW] 3.0.8-nAa-03 [6/5/2013] - Unified kernel
By the way, this phone will remains a memory for me.
And it still comply my signature, I will swap this phone if only it become ashes
Until then.....
If there are chances of some genius can solder Xperia X8 with "goodies ram" i would seek his services

yeah the phone has payed off to me way more than it costed...(about 200$ when i bought it).
It has been 2 years since then and seriously i am way more satisfied with my device.
thanks to the devs for keeping it alive for so many years..

Ah, ah... it's quite nostalgic right? It looked brand new for start-off, until we look up upon other devices

Yeah..
just one month after i bought it LWW showed up and then i thought that i should had bought it instead..

My father had LWW, i personally like it for one feature..... The dual speaker Dang, the sound was so great

I am pretty sure it will go down as a Legacy device, but that doesn't mean development has to stop does it?

sadly, i do too. it was a great 2+ years though. with guys like you still developing i think development won't stop...yet. but i guess it will have to, sooner or later.

same here...i still remember when GDX came out, then EET took it over and now GDX's end. now whose next? nAa, Daveee10 or alfsamsung? when these people will leave X8 forums, there will be no original development. All that we would get after that will be roms and kernels based off on these people's roms.

lol....who is making rom and kernel from the sources now? all roms are based off on the above mentioned people's work.
told ya...saw this coming. X8's days are numbered. Let the countdown begin. Will keep this phone safe.

The development will not stop. But slowly it will stop. Eventually everyone will switch to another device. Because X8 is really outdated and slow for today's standards. I bought the X8 for 180 Euros 2 years ago.

paradox

My X8 is not even one year old :silly: :silly:
Sent from my X8

yup, emotionally leave us all mourn for a while but its the day that will come one day because this technology world
are developing pretty fast and rapidly like every day a new device have been introduced even X8 has been release 2.5 years
ago that the age of Android developing rapidly, for me i have been a X8 user just for a year my warranty does expires
couple of weeks ago. as this is my first android phone.
but not so many developer will stop developing ROM's there's so many new ROM's out there as i guess it our X8 will been kept
alive for couple of years coming. even so many users likely to migrate to newer device because of our X8's hardware
really obsolete. even me! keeping my hope alive that i can still get a GS4 this month! and it will be my second
Android device. a huge jump from current hardware specs that phone i used afterward i got a Ipad but its not a Smartphone!

I have so memories about with this phone. My phone is one year and 2 months old now. I still remembers the time when my mom gave it to me. It is not a special device but for me, it was a very great memories. And I still remember the first time I brick my phone. I'm not a rich guy. I laugh with the phone. I cry with the phone. I listen music with the phone. Many memories still remains. This is legacy devices now and we all know it. But for me, it's never a legacy device. It was my very special device.

@CnC-ROCK
True that. True that. That's exactly why I chose kernels. Thousand times easier than ROMs. Or so it seemed up until about a week ago.

If not mistaken, Forum that are moved to Legacy section are meant to be "Read-only" threads..... Except if there is an critical updates

At first sight, it seems creating threads is actually allowed in Legacy device forums.

Apparently yes, deleting will start when the forum is inactive
In the meantime, all former user of x8 will buy a bulky phone

XDA admins are f*cking out of their mind? atleast put up this news in portal. X8 and its devs deserve that respect.
i dont think they will remove X8 from legacy soon enough. they need to put Galaxy Ace out of its misery first.

Ready to Finally get out of here...

First off, let me say that the XDA site has been a godsend. I've learned more about my phone's capabilities in the last few months than I could have ever expected.
Having said that, the Epic 4G community is seriously lacking. I've rooted and custom rom'ed a few friends' phones recently, an Evo, an Incredible, a droid eris, and a Droid X. It was shocking to me to enter their forums and see all the wealth of information and plethora of choices. CM7, MIUI, roms galore. Then I come back to our forum... and... yeah. I appreciate all that the dev's have done for our phone. I can't even remember how much my phone has improved over stock, but I think it's crazy how undersupported our phone really is. It's got all the potential in the world, but the comparably weaker Evo is getting all the love from sprint customers.
That's why I pre-ordered the Evo 3d from best buy recently. As much as I love the screen on the samsung and would love to have the SGS2, I just can't risk getting stuck with a phone that has little to no support again. It's a shame. Best of luck to those of you who stick with this phone. Hopefully the trend of established developers leaving slows down because it's been very disheartening to see our already meager dev crowd dropping like flies.
On to bigger and better things but still thankful for all the support for the past few months. Take care.

I wasn't trying to disrespect the community. In fact, I went out of my way to say thank you. Anyhow, the reason I posted this is because I have a strong feeling that there are plenty others on this forum (whether they are lurkers in the dark or randoms that post one-liners just to bulk up their post count, or even the dev's themselves) who feel similarly. Our phone had all the potential in the word. But, between Samsung's ineptitude and our comparatively small dev community, this phone never came anywhere close to its potential. It's sad that my girl's banged up antique droid eris can flawlessly run the latest CM7, yet my phone shi*ts a brick if I try to load netflix.
again, no disrespect. for those of you that stick with samsung, I hope the SGS2 gets better support. It certainly looks like a phone for the ages.

With all your contributions to development and support, you'll be sorely missed. Before you went on your useless, selfish rant, did you consider you could have learned to develop or help support or developers? You were party of the community that it sounds like you put nothing into. You justifiably got the same from it. I hope you learn this before you go stink up another community.
These threads are useless and make me like our community more and welcome those who don't want to add anything to leave quietly. We don't care how much you butt hurt over the EVO.

I have to admit, this made me laugh too.
Having said that, there are two things I didn't do for this forum.
1.) I didn't develop or theme, wish I could have, but it's going to be a long learning process.
2.) I didn't post every time I coughed, sneezed, burped, pooped, or grabbed a bite to eat. I didn't think it was necessary.
But I did do the following:
1.) Visited this forum and other XDA forums very regularly, which is how the site makes its money. Sponsors don't pay for post counts, they pay for page hits. There are likely exponentially more visitors than posters.
2.) Donated. For those dev's whose Rom's I used, and themers whose themes I enjoyed, I donated money. And, I'm pretty sure that's a large incentive for why they do what they do, as Noobnl so eloquently displayed.
3.) Referred, literally dozens and dozens of people to this website, which adds visitors, page hits, and sponsor money.
So, you're right. I never developed a ROM that you could use. But, until now, I also didn't waste bandwidth with nonsense or ETA queries. Once again, I didn't start this post as a swan song or with the hope of warm condolences; I was just curious to see if there were others who felt the same way.
Thanks for the laugh anyhow.

I am having a hard time justifying this comment. My friends want me to search for roms on their phonesand when I look I find a ton of pretty much the same roms written by different people. Can someone who had done this on other phones explain what the bonus to having 40 roms with 1 feature current versus having 5 stable, working roms that can have features added. I'm not sure went over-saturating the dev section is considered better support. Was the EVO so bad off that it need 40 roms?

If you want a rom like that, buy an evo. This is the hero c We have half the processing power, mdpi screens, no flash support, and way less internal memory.
Be happy with 2.3.4 gingerbread, even running it is a small miracle.
Edit: The big thing about that rom is all the high powered features. Netflix and the like just aren't possible on the hero as far as I know c Buy an Evo or try the port that's already been mentioned

Even if it were possible to get half the stuff from that rom working, it would be slow as molasses, buggy as a bees nest, and probably not worth the effort (except maybe from a "just to see if I can do it" standpoint). like ruby said, most of that is made for better hardware, and after you take all that out, you've just got rosie 3.0....

Tk's gingersense rom is more than enough for me..
and the way things are moving along with it I don't think it will be to much longer before everything is fully functional. :]
yea as far as porting that rom to the heroc you are looking at alot of work esp since sense is closed source and the evo uses an ARM7 processor and the hero has an ARM6. this is also why there has been little luck with a MIUI rom for us too
myn is an awesome guy and i have been using his roms forever (since donut), and trust me i would love to see this on the heroC infact if you flash tazz4.1 in the gingersense thread myn's wallpaper is the default along with the TwoPointTwo theme, but sadly its just not likely since the 2 phones are very different.

No, the best way to attract the dev's attention is to PM the dev.
You don't put a link to a ROM that is not even remotely started for our device with the tag "[Port]" and the title "Amazing Rom!!". Is this rocket science to you?
If you named it something more along the lines of "[WIP/Devs Needed] Possible Synergy Port?" That would have made way more sense. Instead, there's people clicking on this and assuming it's a ROM, and then we'll have pages and pages of people asking for ETAs (or even possibly people trying to flash the Synergy ROM from your link).
Did you even bother to look and see what the current Sense Gingerbread build status was? Or did you assume that just because a dev of a ROM for an entirely different (and way higher specced device, I might add) told you in a PM that you have his permission to port the ROM, that it was logical to make a thread about it?
The most logical thing to do would have been to ask thoughtlesskyle what he thought of the idea of porting it, as he obviously is the most experienced porter on the HeroC forums now that NFX and Zenulator have left.
But it's ok, you're right, you're not a dev, and this thread will probably go for a few pages and then die when people realize that this isn't going to happen. TK is doing insanely great work on the port we already have, this is just a waste of time.
In all honesty, the only waste of time here was your long rant about a screw up in the title. Apparently you are mister amazing and never made a single mistake. I forgot that you were the golden boy of XDA. Oh wait, you are not. You are just a regular person with a little more experience on the site than me. I purposely put the misconceptious title in there so that it would attract more people. When you say [Devs Needed] a lot of people pass it over. Now if you would spend your time developing instead of figuring out ways to insult people over a website. I realize that this rom is very advanced and its about 95 percent positive that it never would or could get ported but at the same time thats exactly what was said about froyo and gingerbread....but guess what, they did! Now obviously it would not run as smooth or anything but it would be quite nice just to see that we could.
dude go to hell are you seriously flaming liquid right now? obviously you being a noob you have no idea what hes done for the heroc community, you made a mistake and your at fault here so stop trying to put it on someone else and and man the [email protected]#ck up!

Ive been rooted and all of that for months. The reason i asked that is because obviously i have not tried everything out there, no one has. I wanted to get peoples feed back on different things they have tried that maybe i have not seen before. It was not my first time doing all of that stuff and in all honesty i just wanted something "Fresh" on my phone. I did not want to use the usual CM7 with fr partition and ram optimizer. I wanted to get a different result. Obviously I could go out and test multiple combos together but I was hoping to get the whole communities feed back since our hero is starting to stand on its last leg and we have all had time to test multiple things.
i just reported this thread to a moderator and u should be banned from xda.

[GOODBYE] Bidding Adieu to my X10 friends - championswimmer

The situation is not as grim as the title suggests. I am not really saying goodbye to my X10. Only going to step away from active developmental activity on the X10. Most of my close friends here saw it coming as I did not make any big release on this forum any time recently.
I joined the X10 train pretty late in fact, the time when all the fervour regarding bootloader unlocking, getting first custom kernel, and getting official CM support was just dying down. And still in this short time I learnt a lot, and it's my great fortune that I was able to help out a few people and teach a few things to people too.
There have always been awesome friends here who helped me right from my first baby steps. It was some time around July or August of 2011 that I held the X10 (my first android) in my hand for the first time. I had heard about rooting from before, and I already had hacked some WinMo phones earlier so I ended up rooting the phone the very second day. But back then I was as n00b as one can get. And it was during those days that I made friends with the most helpful guy on xda, GregBradley. (old timers on this forum will surely know him). And then soon enough I started getting into the groove of things, and released my first mod/tweak/theme pack for WolfBreak's ROM.
Over time I made friends with some great people like Rahul (DoomLord), Wolfbreak, Colossus, Aaron (pvyparts), Iris and many many more. And I remember releasing my first ever custom ROM the X10S 3 days before my 12th Grade finals were about to begin. (those are like the GCSE of UK). I was elated when lots of people like Tof37, Wo88les, Toledojab, Feravolt, Yeeyon, barath000 came out to help me with that project. and we made the xda front page !!
Next I learnt compiling kernels. And once again that was not possible without DoomLord. Whenever I used to get stuck he would give me a very very faint idea and then add the line 'search more and find out yourself'. (And as I write this, Rahul bhaiyya just said 'congrats' on the pic of my Xperia S on facebook )
Out of my zeal to help the devs on X10, and in general the xperia family, I started to work on the Kernel Kitchen, and I was totally over the moon when that made to the front page too. But obviously my greatest achivement I would consider would be being able to succesfully compile and deploy AOKP to all the Xperia devices. And it was during this process I actually learnt how tiny and insignificant my knowledge on the Android platform is. When i used to go through the code patches by the great guys like jerpelea, bin4ry and zdzihu, I would realise how much more they know, and how much more I still have to learn.
Now the shiny new Xperia S in my hand looks really beautiful but the X10 sitting just beside it will always remain closer to my heart. It's here that I made awesome friends like Sahib, TGM, @rbiter and TheLogic, and it's right here that I learnt whatever little I know about Android phones.
I would always be popping up on the General Chat forum, and also stay active on the X10S thread, because that is the ROM that my X10 is currently running
But I won't really have time to develop anything much (even had to drop the idea of a goodbye ROM due to hectic schedule at college )
So guys, all i want to say is CHEERS!! and ALL THE BEST with life. Always drop me in a PM when you need help or just want to chat up. And over this little period of time, along with the great moments have come those unavoidable situations where I might have got into war of words or hurt a few sentiments here and there. Please do forgive me for them.
Once again a wholehearted thanks to each and every person who helped me, taught me, donated some bucks, worked with me, pressed the thanks button on my posts , used my ROM, or even visited my threads.
will miss the best dev forum on whole xda !!!

Hi Champ!
Thank you for bringing so much great stuff to my x10! Especially the S-stuff, because I'm into that phone.
I liked reading your OP in this thread, and to see your picture. It's good to see who was behind all this effort, and to read how you did learn all of this. I wish I had the time for it.
Right now I'm switching form Vasishta's ICS to X10s V9 final. [On the fly EDIT] [email protected]#$ forget the final verificiation part!
Anyway, switching to X10s v9 is partly as a tribute to all your hard work.
I am thinking of switching to Xperia S. Maybe I'll catch your ROM's over there. I'll sure be looking out for them.
Thanks again and make sure to have lot's of fun in the future!
Kind regards from The Netherlands,

Just wondering: What were your reasons to switch to Xperia S, instead of HTC one X, or some Nexus?

BECAUSE I AM A SONY FANBOY
AND BECAUSE XPERIA DEVICES MAY NOT HAVE MAXIMUM DEVELOPMENT BUT THEY ARE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GADGETS ON EARTH !!!
and also because I have grown accustomed with Xperias running on Qualcomm SoC's so I can find it easy to do tinkering/tweaking/developing on them.
(psst... and also because as a noobie developer, I get less competition on Xperia , )

I am planning to get one but cant decide what to look for. Tab 2 has a 4000 mAh battery. there were some with 5000 mAh capacity.
Moreover our device takes 2A at 5V for charging, anything less than that would mean a very very long time to charge.
So I would wondering if anyone has any experience with that..

WTF Happened in the CM10.1 thread today??
I get home and there's like 40 new posts and everybody's all fired up...
My 5 cents('cause there's no penny in canada anymore):
It is one thing to report an issue and ask for support. This can be helpful and constructive.
It is completely another thing to make demands of ANYONE here. No one on XDA is getting paid for anything that they are sharing here. They do this for one of two reasons; First if you are doing any work XDA Forums are a great troubleshooting tool, even if the final goal is to turn a profit, as a user/tester you get to use their software free, its win/win man. Second you may, like me, just love trying new things and challenging what is possible even if you do not own the device, and your only reward is knowing "I did it".
When users make demands instead of useful posts it does make one feel much less like sharing. I have been a member here since 2008 but my first post was not until 2012 because between the search function and being able to make certain leaps of faith there has not been one time that I couldn't find the answer, even if it wasn't the answer I was looking for (I think of it as gaining "The Knowledge" to where I felt my opinion was valid, but that's my own hangup). To my point, I was too nervous to share anything I had created because I felt like two things would happen. It would be ridiculed and torn apart due to my lack of knowledge, and whiny "users" would rain all over my parade, pointing out the most miniscule flaw.(Never even mind, demanding that I fix it!) I personally think I have never been the first person to report a bug on anything I have tried. I assume that it is my own lack of knowledge that has led to the failure and set about trying to solve MY problem. I will admit that when reading a thread with a post reporting a problem that I too have experienced, I may chime in to report that I am in the same boat, but only if it can be accompanied by advice as to how I am either working around it, or on it. If I've got nothing constructive to add a simple click on the "thanks" button of the original post reporting the problem is enough to let most OP's know that another user shares the issue.
Please can we all just try to keep our posts constructive and honest, keeping in mind the nature of the forum which you are posting in.
The snippets that were left after Siberian Tiger cleaned up were still enough to paint a pretty terrible picture. For a short time today this was not a "Community" in any way. And users need to know that if they will not act as a member of a community they will quickly find themselves unwelcome in it.
Blah! That got too wordy, sorry. And thank you if you actually read this far. And sorry again because I know that reads condescending and I feel a little like a DB, but its from the heart. I still kinda feel ****ty, usually writing makes it better...
Love XDA, and xda users. I have seen some pretty amazing developments over the years, impossible is nothing here.
Chris
Edit: I just want to add that codeworkx latest CM10.1 with ketut.kumajaya's oc'd kernel is my best android experience yet, on any device. Book it. That's the collaborative nature I'm talkin' about! Thanks again.
I regret buying my tab 2 10.1. It's a great tablet but there's not much support on it and I could have bought the note 10.1 for a little more ;(

{ATTENTION ALL USERS] off topic/rubbish in dev forum

The Sony Xperia Arc/S Development forum is being ruined!!!!
Its meant to be a forum where the great devs post their roms, but users are ruining it with posts, posts about
'how do I flash this kernal' or 'how do i flash this rom? what order do I flash it?'
thats not really nothing to do with Development of Roms, its laziness of not reading the General or Q and A forum! each of the two forums I have mention have a very in depth guide how to flash a kernal, flash a rom, flash FTF files, everything!!!!
this place is not a playschool, you shouldnt need your hands holding flashing anything to your phone, thats what search is for!!!
MODS..... You need to sort out the dev forum, it makes horrible reading the amount of off-topic posts (not telling you how to do your jobs, as you do your jobs well!)
who agrees with me? look, my wife is not technology minded at all, but reading all the posts, she managed to unlock bootloader, flash a stock FTF file, install a kernal, installed a custom rom.....surely my wife (bless her) doesnt know phones at all, managed to do that, surely any/every user can do the same, remember.....read General forum (STICKY POSTS) and Q & A forum, or use Google!!!!!
Maybe you should put this as a sticky?

I think you've hit the nail on the head, and given some of the discussions in the main forum in regards to the 10 post rule and noobs, it seems that "kids" with their new Android Phones are flocking here, not with the intention to learn anything, but to make their Phones "the best" whatever, which has changed the XDA experience imo.

Not all "kids" are like your description. I´m also 15 years old but I really enjoy learning something here on XDA. I even also hate spam posts so your statement is much to generalized.
there are kids in every phones forum
The worst part is that nobody wants to read at all. All wants step by step solution but no body reads. I am tired of reporting. The situation is quite same in all the Xperia Forums.
It must be pretty hard for the MODs to control so much off topic discussions.

No, I can't agree with you. I joined at XDA 2 years ago and was a total noob back then. All i did was, i read, i searched and i asked questions only in relevant threads.
By doing this I've learned from so many other users and their threads.
All I am saying that, first the new users must read, cause most of the solutions are already solved for them in the Sticky threads.
Second if there's a serious problem then you are most welcome to post your questions in the Q/A forum. But questions like how to root, or How to flash a kernel or Which ROM to choose or Which Kernel is better, Bootloader unlocking is good or bad, questions like these, i am sorry but mustn't be encouraged.
Cause all the off topic discussions are seriously ruining the main point of this wonderful forum.
Agree with you Auni, although I Joined in 2007, I read, re-read every post on how to flash my phone (in those days it was only windows mobiles on here), And every different Android mobile I have bought, I have always read the sticky first.
This site needs to higher the amount of posts you need to access the Dev forum, I know we all start as Newbies, but reading etc and trial and error is great experience.
The best thing is, they have Root and want to flash something, but to read the titel or the op is to heavy for them
KIDS PHONE?! I'm 26 you bastards! Lol but seriously it's a fairly outdated phone, but I would hardly call it a kids phone, unless it's been handed down. To buy it, it's still quite pricey, £150 used to almost £300 new. The Galaxy Ace is more a kids phone because of the price bracket it falls in, there are many phones out there that are cheap, any 'kid' that has this phone is lucky.
Also I've not noticed it getting bloated with kids. Let's not forget Jader who is the most popular dev for our phone, he's been doing stuff for over a year now, and has recently turned 16 I believe. He released UHD when he was 15.
You might be older, but respect goes both ways, because when you are 80, you will need someone to wipe your arse, so yeah. Give them a bit of respect!

I too, don't think the Arc S is a kids phone, im nearly 41 years old, and love tinkering around with my phone, thanks to this site I've become a bit of a flashaholic But you going a bit off topic mate, this post is merely stating about users who don't read the stickies or posts, and just ask in every single post 'how do I flash this or that', its a great phone too @stu15 - I only paid £99 quid for mine....Bargain!!!
And massive respect to the devs (especially Jader), who have created some great roms, and at such a young ages too!
It's easy to get lost on the forums if you're new, the stickies are great, but new people might not understand how forums work. The internet is full of answered questions, but people prefer to ask their question, even if it's just worded differently.
It's probably not unique to the Arc forum, it's probably in most forums on XDA.
Also, £99? Thats what I sold my 3 year old iPhone 3G for early last year. Where did you get it?

It's not about it being a kids Phone, the point is it's the mindset of the growing user base of xda is destroying the forums, and it's not being disrespectful, the likes of Jader have earned their stripes here, no one can deny that, it's the kind of People who come here for all the wrong reasons that are the problem.

Same here, I knew nothing, but then by reading, practicing, screwing up, having to reflash with SEUS 5 times in a row whilst trying to make a particular modification is how I learned and continue to learn everything I know today which is why I find it highly frustrating when others clearly don't have the same intention to do the same. I've tried to argue the fact that "we were all noobs once" and that forums should change to accommodate the Android generation as have others in other discussions in the main forums but it's always met with the same response, these are developer forums and there's a certain etiquette to be followed, so by spoon feeding the lazy is just to add to the destruction of these forums, which is why I'll pull someone up first about their laziness before offering help.
And what I find funny is after a certain time of being here, members who initially took issues with my kind of posts when they first joined, start to make similar ones when they get sick of the repetitiveness of "how to root" threads.

I'm very surprised anyone would sell it for that cheap, it may be single core but it's still a great phone and is worth a lot more than that!!
-- But in regards to the topic, I used to moderate a small forum a few years back and you get people who dont read stickies, double post, post same questions, post in wrong threads. Etc etc.
It's one of the natures of the forum format. It's also important to remember lots of users are not English, and have only a small grasp on the basics, which makes following the rules, or finding the right information much harder.
The obvious way to start making the forums more controlled, is by making accounts only creatable through invitations. That might help a little, obviously people will still be able to read the information, which might be enough.
