Thinking about going back to stock AOSP rom

The stock AOSP rom seemed to run better than cm 7.03 plus it was 2.3.4. I know tge nightlys are the latest but I need somd stablility on my phone. CM7 seems buggy on this device even a couple random reboots. Anybody else experience similar results?

Stock 2.3.4 is great stability wise and has tremendous battery life.

Iv been running zuluzulu for about a week now and it flies. Great battery life although I am a heavy user. I haven't experienced random reboots at all with it. Also if you like the notification power widget from cm7 its built into zuluzulu.

Try AdamG's oxygen ROM and you'll never want the stock ROM again. It isn't built on cm7, it's based on aosp ROM.

I'm on oxygen now. Really a nice rom. I had opensoju downloaded too, but I went with oxygen.
But I do miss the rotary lockscreen on cm, with the messaging shortcut in the middle.

Agreed. AdamG's Oxygen Rom is my favourite right now. It's AOSP GRJ22 with some of the great features from CyanogenMOD built in (status bar power widget, improved widget picker, etc) and fantastic battery life!

A stable cm 7.1 (2.34) will be out very soon. No worries

With many devices over many years, I've consistently found that stock firmware is more stable and functional than enthusiast-developed firmware.
I have literally never found an enthusiast-developed firmware that doesn't have at least some minor interface glitches. Most have some problem that's major enough that after a few hours of playing I revert to stock.
Occasionally I will run something other than stock, but that is typically after the device has aged to the point that this is the only way to get a feature. By that point, it's usually time to replace the device, anyway.

I agree in general, but of course there are exception. When I had an HTC Evo 4G, I ended up running CM6 as my daily and it was exceptionally stable. At least as good as stock HTC Sense. Unfortunately when Gingerbread came around, that changed, and CM7 was not in the same ballpark.
On my Nexus, though... yeah I run stock ROM. CM7 is cool and if I had any other device (that came with a carrier OS and not pure Android), I would dump that shiz and rock CM7 for sure. But plain pure stock Android developed by a team of amazing developers specifically for this device, that's just not going to be beat

Hah. Google's "official" code isn't really better then what rom devs provide if they know what they're doing. The way google keeps pushing buggy code without giving a s*** is really disappointing. They release updates and then they stop caring about it. As some pointed out the gb update brought call delay and broke aac support, it really seems like they don't even do some basic testing before releasing a new version (which even the crappiest developer on the block generally does). On top of that, there is still no support at all for gpu acceleration in the ui, which is kinda retarded. Day after day i'm getting more and more disappointed about google dev team's job, they don't really deserve half the respect that many geeks keep tributing them.

Stock vs Custom rom on the NS was something I always thought about too! I only ran stock for a few hours because I immediately flashed a new rom when I got my phone LOL But what I can remember from the stock 2.3.4 was that it was fast, faster than any phone I've ever had. But there are so many features that are incorporated in custom roms and it's really hard to forgo these things.
Anyone out there who has used both stock 2.3.4 and oxygen who can attest to better battery life and performance? I am curious as well.
The last phone I used for a long time running stock was my N1 but after flashing CM6 I never really looked back. Speed increase was very noticeable and battery life was better. This is the reason why I never really bothered to use stock software for my next phones.

well, to be honest, i kinda regret to be flashed customs. Stock is so stable and has so good battery life, but now i can't live without cm7 features, just can't...
it's sad story that shows that you can't miss what you don't know! =oP

I agree for the most part, stock gb is pretty good. Using Oxygen now, and the stability and speed from stock + some nice features makes it a good choice!

In the case of Oxygen not much difference but I believe CM pretty much guts the framework and replaces it with their own heavily modded version.

does facebook sync work on all ASOP roms? or is it just CM7?

Just wondering - does CM 7 for Nexus S still have the video capture glitch where a couple of seconds are skipped near the beginning when played back?

tested right now and couldn't notice... if there is any, it's less than 1sec!

[Q] CM7 vs. MIUI

As both CM7 and MIUI have really matured over the last weeks and samsung is still not able to get to develop a stable gingerbread version I think its time to have a deeper look into the alternatives. What do you think, what is the best solution for the sgs right now? please also post experiences, but really valuable I guess are only experiences with current CM7 or MIUI versions!

Samsung gingerbread is as stable, or more, than CM7/MIUI, meaning none is 100% stable, what is your problem...

Now I am using Gelnet Miui rom and it is fantastic an also stable!
You should try it

cm7 and miui are both very fast, even with lagfix on samsung roms you can see minor lags but...
cm7 and miui have bugs that made me go back to samsung custom rom.
the camera does not work even regular picture looks bad sometimes, battery drain in cm7 is also worst than any bug samsung has, if the camera and the battery does not bother you so you can give it a try.
another reason i go back to samsung rom is the brightness change from the notification bar and the swype left for calls in contacts or logs (very usefull while you are driving).

thanks, but may I ask, when you tried out CM7? Ive read, that bettery is now even better lightly than with Sams FW and apparently the camera issues have also been fixed, at least by GALNET...for the swyping contacts i suppose there are alternative contacts apks?

I've just joined CM7 and have had slightly better battery power and no camera issues at all. I'm really impressed with the whole package. I can't imagine going back to stock ROM. Everything is stable and fast.

CM7 is very stable on my phone, better than last official ROM, so I keep it.

I installed both of them on my phone. CM7 had radio problem which didnt work (although there are CM7 radio patch which could be flashed). MIUI had a problem with getting network. Kept getting SOS signal only. Tried flashing 2-3 different MIUI roms and all of them had this problem of no network. Think since there are so many custom roms based on official firmware out there, it makes sense to install them over CM7/MIUI.

are you serious? that sounds awesome, if someone could pls confirm that! the last time i tried miui/cm7 i could just survive the day with massive undervolting and custom kernels which was simply put inacceptable for daily use.. using the same voltage settings on stock roms give me more than 3 days, same usage pattern.

I am using CM7 and battery life has improved but dont expect more than 1 1/2 day,
If battery life is your major concern then stick to the one you are happy with

i don't like that my Android seems like an iPhone... no no.. Miui is not for me, it's just a copy (according to me, design is too similar...)

iv been trying out nearly all roms around here
and i can say cm7 is by far the superior rom out there
BUT
besides all the people always telling battery gets better and this might even be the case but the batt is still VERY weak
no comparison to stock rom

I mount the CM7, but now I also had the MIUI, I think the CM7 is better, speed, performance and stability

I tried the latest cm7 nightly a couple weeks ago. It was interesting, but definitely wasnt as smooth and polished as jvq. It also crashed a couple of times. Went back to jvq which I'm happy with for now.

I change rom every week and have found that the best battery is with stock miui from MIUIAndroid.com. However, I never turn on data until I need it. With this after 11 hours medium usage I was still on 80%!

I'm using Utacka's Paranoid Android Nov16 Build. (Not using the latest build because Tethering encryption was not working on Builds 17-18)
2hrs of watching HD videos.
1hr of streaming music on Google Play Music.
1hr of browsing.
Maximum brightness and mobile data on the whole time.

Yes I can confirm that it works on the Nov16 build. There would be a problem with tethering though if you use the NEAK kernel with the Nov16 build last time I tested. Maybe the NEAK kernel is OK now.

I am running a kernel with OC and stock samsung 4.1.2. Honestly im kind of shocked at the difference between stock and aosp based battery time.
Im getting literally TRIPPLE more worth of battery time in stock then aosp. TRIPPLE!
And mind you that i have not debloated it too much. Just some apps that i know i never use. And im running the kernel pretty aggressive. Full OC and not undervolted a thing.
I always used cm or anything aosp based on my phones mostly because of battery and the pure slimness in vanilla builds.
But now i feel that the drain is actually to great to justify running aosp. Even though i really don't like TouchWiz, i truly love and cherish batterytime, responsiveness and foremost, full use of the capabilites this fine device has...
For once i feel that aosp is one step behind what samsung already has made for this device.
Of course i understand that almost everything is still in a kind of beta version and it most probably will improve. But for the time being. Im choosing original. Thou i never thought this day would come.
Do NOT take this post as a bash against aosp versions out there. I truly admire every one of them and im proud to be able to test most of them. But the bottom line is what works best for you and your needs.
I hope 4.2 brings more news to this magical device.

Yes stock has the best battery life from my experience. I like testing different ROMs so much so that I change almost every week. But right now I'm using a custom ROM based on stock.
I'll try to provide more battery life info on other AOXP/CM10/PA ROMs when I have the time. Possibly going to make a standard procedure for testing...

This phones still quite new so we will have to wait for development to start speeding up :sly:

Hey I just ordered my nexus 4. Just a quick question, which custom rom most resembles the stock one that the n4 comes with but with better tweaks and battery life?
Coming from an s3 and I've always used a touchwiz based custom rom.
So I would like to stay with the rom that most is similar to the one the n4 comes with. Ty

All of them resemble stock. They're all themed the same, it's just a matter of added features while maintaining the same look as stock.
I don't get what you're trying to get at op. It's not like s3 roms where everybody is trying to theme their rom. A lot of roms on n4 aren't themed, some are but most are left it's holo look.

I guess... From a stability point of view... To be as stable as the stock.
I've ran cm10.1 and cm10...Along with some other aokp roms on my s3 before and of course it's not as stable as the stock tw rom.

All the ROMs should be very stable since they are all based on the same AOSP code. This is very different from a non-Nexus phone where custom ROMs might be less stable.

Are the any major bugs with CM rom? With the S3, Picassa sync and Bluetooth didn't work...I'm assuming with the N4 everything should be more or less 100%?

Well the difference is that this is NEXUS device and is AOSP supported. So 99.9% of the ROMs that come out for this phone are stable. They're not stable on the S3 for AOKP/CM right away because they have to actually do work to make it work; whereas, N4 is AOSP supported and its like.. BAM! it works out of the box. As for S3, the phone ships out with TouchWiz. Going from TouchWiz to AOSP requires work to make everything work.
I'd say CM/AOKP are pretty stable overall. All ROMs are stable. This is one of the many benefits of having a Nexus device and I don't believe in when people are wanting to upgrade and people say "oh just get a S3.. it doesnt have latest but just flash a custom rom and you'll be on latest android) no it doesn't work that way just because of like what you said... instablity. When Android 5.0 (Key Lime Pie) comes out, N4 will be one of the first devices to launch with it and we'll have the most stable ROM day one without having to rework code to make all the functionalities like calling, 3G/4G, WiFi, Bluetooth, Screen Rotation, Data, etc to work (I know on other phones, people release dirty ROMs and things like what I listed don't work as of yet until its fixed)
Shopping for a ROM/Kernel is like shopping for a car. Some tips to take,
1) Browse the original and android dev forums. Search around and look for whats interesting.
2) Find it interesting? Read OP post and the past 6-7 posts (dont even read it.. skim through it for feedback)
3) Like what you see? Check for screenshots or even a YouTube video
4) Still like it? Flash it and try it
and most of all, ENJOY.

I've been reading at other threads about people complaining about quick battery drain and the screen not looking too good... I hope that isn't the case with me.. but I'm pretty sure a custom rom and kernel can fix all of that.

Quick battery drain. Hmmmm, you will probably notice that battery won't be good until at least 2-3 charge cycles. Why?
1. You just got the phone, obviously you're going to be playing with the phone. Downloading apps, changing settings, setting up your home screen etc.
2. It takes time for the phone to get its charging cycle.
3. Stock kernel has the msm wakelock. Fixed in a future OTA.
Screen looks great. I don't have any problems. But yes you are right, custom kernel does fix #3 and you can alter your colors until it satisfy your eyes. Stock values are good enough for me. It looks A LOT better than Samsung's Super AMOLED, I came from a Galaxy Nexus.

Custom ROMs - sharing a beginner's experience

As a long time Android user and general nerd, I often hear from some of my friends about new and cool custom ROMs. It ranges from "amazing customization" to "blazing speed" and even "far better than anything stock in general".
So this weekend I decided that since my warranty is no longer valid anyway, and Samsung won't be updating the Galaxy S2 GT-i9100 anymore, I can go ahead and try something new and shiny, which could help me with my job.
And thus began my research and tests on Android custom ROMs...and oh boy, that was one hell of an experience.
Everything I heard from people about nearly everything was shattered right then and there.
As a reasonable person, I decided to try some of the more popular ROMs, trying to stick as much as possible to stable builds since everyday use is a big deal for me. So now I present to you, my experience with what I was told are the top-dogs of the custom ROM world and my impressions of each:
Omni 4.4.2
This one actually surprised me in terms of it's video driver. As some might know, a bunch of Gameloft published games always show washed out colors on the Galaxy S2, but when used, this ROM showed the correct colors...quite shocking! ...however, it turned out to be highly unstable with apps crashing left and right all the time and often for no real reason. This ROM is not really advertised as "stable" so I guess that was understandable, so I decided to move on.
MIUI v5
This ROM was just impressive. I absolutely love the UI (and I didn't even try the customization stuff, yet I say that!). It seemed really stable and I almost decided to stick with it...until I found out that 3 apps in particular I very much rely on don't work properly or at all (overlay issues it seems). This got me really disappointed but I figured functionality is more important than looks so once again, I decided to move on.
CyanogenMod 10.3.1
This might be the biggest disappointment for all the wrong reasons. The buildup and hype I got from people about it created in my head "the ultimate ROM"...but after installing it and doing some tests...I have to say, the performance difference was just barely noticeable and i all honesty, not worth the trade for the bugs it also brings (although if it had the video driver from Omni I would've changed my mind). I really wanted to do a fair judgement since I know this is the top-dog of ROMs (or at least in popularity) so I even ran tests on it...and in games, the framerate difference between stock and CM10.3 was just 2-5fps.
Resurrection Remix 4.0.7
This was...let me just say it out loud - the installation for this ROM should be a standard - just incorporate some stuff and have people chose what to get or don't get. Having stock stuff and then 10 additional flashable ZIPs while not really a big issue is just a time-waster for a lot of people in my eyes (although it would've been nice to know more about the modems when it asks you for a choice). Anyway, this ROM's keyboard just refused to work so I got rid of it after 2 flashes.

...keyboard didn't work on this one again, and after another 2 flash attempts, I scrapped it aswell.
At this point I pretty much just gave up and went back to the Samsung stock ROM for my region and was left with an empty feeling that custom ROMs all seem to have at least one or more huge flaws.
All the buildup and "legends" (lacking a better term) weren't even close to what I experienced (except the MIUI...well, UI) and it got me thinking...are custom ROMs meant for everyday users or they were always aimed at people willing to experiment? Personally, I decided that my journey through the custom ROM world has ended here at least for the time being (maybe someday I'll go back to MIUI but who knows), but I wanted to ask, does anyone feel the same way I do? That custom ROMs, while a really cool thing to be able to have is getting overhyped to the point where unless you really know what you're getting into will lead to just disappointment?
I would really like to hear other people's views on this, especially if you're not an expert user.

Resurrection Remix 4.0.7 worked fine for me. the only problem is the System UI that usually crashes when you messed up on something and it really need some reboot for that. ☺

Well, with custom roms comes both bugs and extended capacities.
First of all, having a rooted phone gives a lot of new possibilities.
Besides, custom roms give new content, like the latest android updates, which the constructors take time to port to their devices.
At last but not least, custom ROMs often let you.. customize as much as thou wish
I'm personally using Cyanfox (android 4.4), and I'm pretty happy about it

You schould try another 4.4.2 custom roms for egz pound rom(the best for me) or beanstalk which is good too

I actually just root my stock ROM with the SuperSU flashable ZIP-thingie...though I only need it for a firewall ^-^;;
But to me one of the biggest deal-breakers is how all the ROMs I did like don't support MHL (if only MIUI was capable of that )

Since the warranty is gone i'm trying a bunch of roms to sede what nave to offer. So far i've only tried the omnirom and it's pretty good to me, except some minor bugs.
In my opinion you've to choose a stabile ROM if you don't want any problems

im using cm10.1 stable linaro build most nearly perfect rom for me.

That's kind'a the thing, CM 10.3.1 is the one shown as stable and it seems to be...but it's missing features that the stock ROMs offer, and the performance difference is pretty much not noticeable enough to justify it for me.
All the ROMs except Omni were shown as "stable" but as i mentioned in my first post, all seem to have at least 1 big issue.
As a side question...I heard the newest version of MIUI actually had MHL/TV-out support on the S2...anyone know if that's true?

I only use my phone for basic stuff.So I just use a stock rom with a custom kernel.That way, everything works and I dont have to read 2000 posts to see what problems to expect.

Stock CM kernel isn't all that great IMO , Try coupling Dorimanx's kernel with CM or any other ROM... Adds a lot of power features with stability. stock Sammy Roms feel very caged and unoptimized thus the need for custom builds. Give it time... It grows on you eventually.

After 2 years of trying to find a custom ROM that doesn't have one show-topping bug, I feel bad for not just staying with a nicely optimized stock ROM with a tweaked kernel that is 100% dependable when I need it.
So, +1 :good:

Well, I only recently got the S2. Before my S2, I've owned an HTC One V. The stock ROM on that thing was just a mess. It came with 4.0.4 ICS and... you guessed it... no update to JB. So I installed a custom ROM on that one... it improved nearly everything.
So, from my experiences with that device, I thought I could flash the S2 and get the same experience. And... well, not really. I have tried so many ROMs...
The AOSP based ROMs either drain battery like hell or have any other bug which is so impacting that I can't deal with it. For example, the Audio 50% bug. Just one word: Annoying.
SO, I could stay with a Samsung stock ROM, but well, that won't be an option for me. Why not? Simple, on the stock rom, using my phone for an hour, literally ONE HOUR, the thing is completely dead. Battery empty. The only stock rom which gives me two and half an hour of screen on time is the 2.3.3 GB stock. And well, that's a bit old nowadays.
The by far best combination for power, speed, stability and battery life for me is CM10.1 stable with the DorimanX 9.14 kernel. I've tried it once and I find myself going back to it pretty much everytime I flashed any ROM I do not like.
Currently I'm on CM11 unofficial nightly, tomorrow I will see for how long my battery can last. I know, my battery is probably broken, but it's not thicker than normal or something like that. It just drains and I have no idea why.

I get up to 14 days with my battery if it's just on Standby [no actual use] and up to a full day if I play some games on it with the Stock ROM.
Also I wanted to mention that I tried DorimanX 8.43 earlier today and my god, my phone became unstable as hell [still on a stock ROM]...odd.
But yeah, you might want to get a new battery if you get less than 16 hours battery life

Hello. I want share my experience. I moved from stock because i want try 4.2 new features, specially widget on lockscreen.
I first tryied cm 10.2 but battery drained quickly and gaming was so sloooow.I tryied then cm10.2 linaro but experienced 4-5 reboot a day. Now I'm back on cm10.2 hoping that the guy working on exynos drivers will bring good news. In the meanwhile I will try gustavo or apolo kernel that seems the most stable kernels

Waiting S4 UI port into i9100G ...

I have found only 2-3 Roms that can be used
I can say that i have installed allmost all posible ROMs. For me every rom whit verson of android above 4.1.2 just didn't work ( i have SD CARD problems in most of the ROM's in other i have encored camera problems or bootloops ) The only ROM working realy good is snapdragon and s4fors2 .
IF ANY ONE KHNOWS HOW TO SOLVE MY SD-CARD PROBLEMS ON ANY ROM WITH ANDROID VERSION ABOVE 4.1.2 PM me PLS

CyanFox Rom is the most stable and worked for me as well. Give it a try!!
For Battery Backup, maybe you can use Voltage Control Pro App, Underclock to 1 GHZ if you are not a hardcore gamer. You can also decrease voltage,more Options over mv are also available in Pro Version, Decreasing Voltage will help lower power consumption of CPU.
You can also install Siyah Latest Kernel and do all of this using S-Tweaks!
