Erratic battery behavior - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Nexus 4's battery indicator behaves very strangely. It often gets "stuck" at certain values and then drops suddenly by 2-3%. Other times, it'll drop like a rock before getting temporarily stuck at another value.
This wouldn't bother me so much if the overall battery life was acceptable, but it isn't, no matter what ROM/kernel settings I've tried. I logged about half an hour of screen-on time earlier today looking up some stuff, and I'm already down to 75%.
Any idea what's going on? I'm trying to figure out whether my Nexus 4 is defective or not.

You likely have an app running in the background eating CPU processes. You can install CPU spy to see if your phone is going into deep sleep, and better battery stats to see if there is something keeping the phone awake or using processes. Lastly, someone will suggest wiping your battery stats. This is not necessary because they are wiped every full charge by the OS.

I've already inspected my battery life with Better Battery Stats and CPU Spy. There's nothing to explain it.
CPU spy reports that my phone has been in Deep Sleep 84%, 384 MHz 11%...and 1512 MHz 2%.
The highest wakelock reported in Better Battery Stats is AquaMail checking for messages, clocking in at a very reasonable 2.3%.

I've found that when your battery stats report erratically that your battery may need to be replaced. Usually faulty batteries drain quickly and raise and lower the reported level while it's discharging. Has your battery ran really hot in the post that may have caused damage?

No, not that I'm aware of. This device is only a week old, and the hottest it's gotten is when I used it to stream music to my car's stereo via Bluetooth. The battery drain was absolutely INSANE with that, by the way - I dropped about 10% from five minutes of streaming YouTube. EDIT: And yes, there have been a few instances where the battery has magically raised the battery level.
Of course, if I tell Google that I think my battery is defective, they'll have me send back the entire phone rather than just the battery. Sayonara, fastest binning! :crying:
Unless someone can suggest something else to try, I'll probably contact Google for an RMA. Le sigh.

True dat. You would still be better off not having to deal with a defective battery for the long term though.

Specific battery life issues

I have had a rooted atrix since release date.
The battery life has been frustratingly bad.
Right now (9am) I am at 86% with the screen having been on 26m.
It's very very very common for my "running" time in spare parts to be 2-3x my screen on time.
Partial wake usage is led by the process: UID 1001, followed by Android System.
Network usage is dominated by process "0" followed by android system. "0" is so far in the lead it is unreal.
My total in all time stats are:
Running 28%
Screen on 14.1%
Phone on 1.5%
Wifi on 30.5% (??????????????)
Wifi running 17.3% (Even more ????????????????????)
I have frozen all of the recommended freezing apps. I have beautiful weather set to refresh every 2 hours. Facebook, twitter, etc, aren't set to notify me at all. I have no idea why it's so bad.
It's coming to the point where i'm about to give up. My nexus one gave me better battery life.
I've already tried a factory reset, is there something i'm overlooking?
What is UID 1001? What is "0"?
The most frustrating phone I've ever owned. It is so close to greatness. I wish I could get rid of this terrible terrible terrible motorola blue garbage.
I've been struggling with battery life too for some reason. If you have Tango installed, get rid of it. That app didn't let your phone sleep and drained battery. Now my problem is the sensor usage when I check my battery history in *#*#INFO#*#*. Android system has been using the sensor 100% of the time for me. I factory reset it, but that didn't work either. I'm really contemplating going back to my N1 too, which is such a shame since this Atrix has so much potential

I turn wifi on and off. On a home off at work. Gps is on. No bluetooth ever. Autosync is on I guess. It may be frozen though.
Right now my phone is at 63% and the screen has only been on 37 minutes! This is pathetic.

Has your phone ever gotten down to 5%-10% or do you always recharge it before then? I've had issues in the past where a lith-ion battery loses lots of its capacity until completely drained and then completely recharged. It seems way to early for this for you, but it might help. From my limited experience, gps is very very costly in terms of battery.

Draining a li-on battery completely more than once a month damages the battery. It's a very bad practice.
I'm having the same issue with UID 1001 under Partial Wake Usage and I also have the 0 under Network Usage. Under Partial Wakelock it shows UID 1001 and a total time of 7h 7m 30s under Total in all time. I've tried a hard reset and still showed up. Have you guys checked to see if you are getting the same thing. If people are getting good battery but have this then I'll feel a little better. I just thought it was weird. I still get this even with WiFi, BT and GPS off.
Under Network Usage the 0 is pretty much all blue all the way across and a little bit of pink at the end. If i try to click on it "Settings has stopped unexpectedly" message.
The battery doesn't seem to last as long as my n1. With my n1 I still have roughly half when I get home from work. The atrix was at 30 or so when I got home today and its been similar most of the times.
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
I am also not terribly happy with the battery usage. Maybe its because I have WiFi on all the time?
Also, just having bluetooth on (but not connected to any BT devices), shouldn't be a big drain on the device.
The main auto-sync feature I have is Exchange push notifications. Gmail only syncs every 3 hours.
I also have device running time on Spare Parts higher than Screen On Time.
I am going to try a factory reset and add applications one by one to see if that has any effect.
I've let it fully discharge once. I just can't sort it out. People in the other threads are getting 1+ DAYS uptime.
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
With light usage I was originally down to about 20% at the end of the day. That's now improved to 50-60% charge after installing the 'green power' app recommended in another thread and further improved by turning off the auto brightness.
Auto brightness is good but needs to be reduced by about 30% to be useful.
Gps Navigation with google is the biggest battery drained I've seen so far. Its on the order of using 1% charge per minute. Im hoping that an offine nav app will be more efficient.

There are a lot of reviews stating that spareparts IS the cause of battery issues. Maybe uninstall that and use the built in battery manager to determine use?

Really? It seems to just be a monitoring app.

Battery charged itself !!

I checked my battery monitor widget today am noticed something very strange. It showed me 40% charged when I was sure it was only 35% charged before I went bed! WTF did it charge itself? As you can see from the screenshots the phone was not on charge and was awake for most of the night which has never happened before. I have not installed any new apps in the last few days I have never seen this before on any of my android phones over the years. After 1 month of using the note this is the first glitch i've noticed (if it is a glitch). I am on stock LA4.
Anyone have any ideas as to why this happened?
I'm not complaining ( wish it happened every night!) just curious.
I have noticed the same strange thing with ICS.
did you try pinching your arm?

It is probably/maybe your battery stats that was not exactly "right" and might "recalibrate" your battery stats to the true value.
The simplest answer is always the true one: It is having trouble reading your battery right. Happens with mine too sometimes.
LOL I had the same thing happened to me.
First day with my note. And so far I am loving it.(despite colour rendering issues , and a very lagging stock keyboard)

Maybe the phones are evolving and learning to use the sensor on the Front to charge itself lol

This has happened to me several times already since the Galaxy S days.. sometimes after a reboot the battery looses 50% and slowly charges back up its quite funny and strange, never happened to my note though.
What do you think happens if some of the services is not needed anymore and stopes relaying, the battery % estimation will go up.

Wtf are you talking about? That's not any kind of estimate of lifetime, that's a report on amount of energy left. And in this case, specifically, a bug in it's reading.

You need to review your facts make a bit more research, the report is based on the fact that how many apps and services are you using, say if the wifi is on, it will show you certain %, however if you turn it off will report you that it has increased, depending on the running apps and services how much battery is left, my laptop does it all the time, unless you are living in pre Smart Battery Meter era.
I have to agree that if the % relies on the voltage (as I am sure it must do to some extent, but I am only guessing), stopping heavy services will allow the voltage to increase and the app may see that as a gain.
Alternatively we have discovered Samsung's secret OTA charging method! This explains why some phones have terrible battery life, they are being sucked dry by nearby 'Vampire Notes'!
Now, if we could just work out how we could charge all Notes by sucking iPhones dry ....

Battery is trolling
The Galaxy Note battery is a three terminals battery. So I think that the % state of charge of this battery is directly calculated from its output voltage.
The voltage decrease as the charge decrease, so it is possible to evaluate the residual charge in the battery. This is not a very precise method but it is quite simple to implement.
After a high current drain there is what is called a ''voltage recovery'', the battery voltage increase slowly a little bit as the current is stopped. So you may think that the battery get back energy, but unfortunately it is only an artifact.
Yesterday I showed you all how my battery indicated that it had charged itself.
So guess what folks today when I checked the complete opposite happened!!
Again as you can see it went from 48% just before I went to sleep only to wake up to a dead phone (switched off). Upon rebooting it showed only 9% !!
Now I can cope with it going up but going down is not good.
Hope its not a hardware problem and just a faulty battery.
lets see what happens tomorrow maybe it will explode!
I'm an EE (election engineering) student. Michel_7 is right. Lithium ion batteries experience a voltage sag during high current draws. Afterwards there is some rebound, both as the battery cools if over temp, and with a period of lower activity. This is in part due to the fact that batteries have internal resistance, and as they supply power, they also dissipate some internally. This is of squared proportion to the current drawn. IE current^2 * resistance. Battery resistance constant, so the more power the phone uses, the more the battery does. This is what heats up the battery.

Left my s5 on top of my frozen tv dinner for an hour, possible damage?

Long story short i was running late and my phone was on top of my tv dinner from the freezer in my lunch bag. It was on it for at least an hour, it wasn't too cold but the phone was a little cold like 3 to 4 times more thn normally. Do you think it has possible damage or am i being too worried?

If it's "having heat issues and some days the battery only last 7 hrs" then say it gets hot and the battery dies too fast... but I'd bet some app is running the cpu at max all the time. Ever looked at the battery usage in settings?
Maybe try a factory reset and don't install non-google apps to see if it clears up.

Alright I'll try that but I always make sure to close all my background apps, maybe 7 hrs is exaggerating but more like 9-12 hours
For comparison I've been seeing 50-65% battery left after 12 hrs off charger.
Even after 24 hrs off charger with average usage I had 30% this AM. It actually streamed Play Music all evening through bluetooth while I worked. I'd be upset if it needed charging after 12 hours.
I've turned off as many bloatware apps as I can in App Manager. I don't know really if that helps much with CPU load as I've always heard that Android handles memory and running services differently than Windows. It can certainly help with data usage, and by extension battery life if some AT&T or Samsung service is reaching out constantly.
I do not regularly kill any apps as some devs seem to think that killing apps has a worse effect than leaving them for the OS to manage since many apps restart anyway. I tend to think that the people who wrote the OS software probably know more about memory management than I do. That doesn't preclude a crappy 3rd party app from causing issues.
If after removing unnecessary apps and/or resetting you still have poor battery life and high temps you may indeed have a dud battery or device.
From my experience in repair, most returns/service for faulty brand new products are user problems; I see it every day. But there are occasional real problems.

But I used my iphone at work to watch videos, ect while there is downtime. I usually watch while it's also on the charger
For the Note series, does anyone know if that "kills" my battery for long term?
I know you can replace battery, but just wondering for future use.
Thanks.
Issue with battery drain due to android system is real
All three people I know that just got the Note 4 were experiencing the same issue I had with excess battery drain with the always generic "android system" taking more battery than anything else including the screen.
I downloaded an app called "System Tuner" and looked the CPU% for Android system and it was a constant 3-4% when the phone was otherwise idle.
I found a post at http://support.t-mobile.com/thread/80459 where they were experiencing the same issue (lose around 12% battery an hour with android system taking a huge chunk of battery). The person from that post was able to address the issue by turning location off, rebooting, turning location on, and rebooting again. After I did this I saw Android system idle at ~0.6% - 1.1% instead. So far I'm getting much better battery life but I'll need to give it some time to know for sure.
Hope this helps!
mine took about 2 full days for everything to finish syncing, downloading, indexing, etc. I had books, news articles, pinned music from google play, etc.
Once that happened, everything is now "normalized" and I'm getting better battery life than I was with the note 3.

Short answer: Maybe, it depends on how you are doing it. Using it while it is charging is not necessarily bad but watching videos and keeping it plugged in while the cell voltage is pegged at 100% will likely deteriorate your battery faster.
Long answer + tips:
Lithium ion batteries are great - they are light, can be made very thin and have excellent energy density but they are also very finiky.
Things to avoid doing with a lithium ion battery
-Charging to 100%, leaving it plugged in overnight is a poor practice(high cell voltages reduce the service life*, stopping the charge at 90%[4.10v] can double the service life, stopping the charge at 80%[4.00v] can quadruple the service life.*)
- Discharging the battery to below ~20% (Li-Ion batteries are somewhat sensitive to deep discharges)
-Charging/exposing Li-Ion to elevated temps or below freezing.
*service life is defined by when a battery can only retain 70% of its rated capacity. Most consumer batteries used in mobile devices have a service life of 500 charge discharge cycles.
It is not uncommon for batteries to lose 30% capacity in 1.5 years or less. Changing your charging and handling habits can double or quadruple a batteries life span.

On my 2nd charge, auto brightness. Pretty freakin' amazing battery life....
15.5 hours off the charger with 8+ screen on time!
I got awful battery life on the first charge cycle. It drained 50% overnight. 2nd charge has lasted amazingly long and I still have 64% after 12hrs of average use.
First charge. Battery life has been phenomenal. Brightness on auto.

After the latest update
I dont know why but my phone goes from 100-90 in less than a hr with minimal use while the screen is set at auto, also in the leaving it unplugged in the night the battery also drains like 5 points.
I've been at full brightness and using the hell out of it non stop so far, and I'm at 35% with screen on time at 3hrs 40 min.

Lollipop battery issues

Hey guys i got a s4 for free a few weeks ago and the battery was having issues so i brought a new battery from Samsung for $50. I guess the phone is $50 now huh, still that's a good price. Anyway i have an improvement in standby time over the old battery that seemed to drain no matter what, but i only get around 2hrs to 3hrs screen on time full brightness with a mix of auto. The phone tends to get warm when its below 40% power. Also using the phone drains it at a fast rate, but standby only 1% per 8mins or so witch is good. Im backing up with twrp and titanium backup, ive tried recalibration, and im about to do a factory reset on this (stock touchwiz)
Sent from my LG-D320n using Tapatalk
Battery calibration apps are a placebo.
Anyway, let me tell you a little story:
2 weeks ago I watched a 2 hour movie on my phone. Started from 100% ans towards the end of the movie I was left with about 50% battery.
Screen brightness was around 60%, WiFi was enabled and the mobile reception was 4G.
All things considered I would assume I can get 4 hours SOT, since it took 2 hours to get from 100 to 50.
This is on a custom rom and battery oriented kernel settings.
Also take into account that I was watching a movie, so the CPU was idling most of the time. Doing tasks and switching from one app to another drives the CPU up.
Your screen-on time seems acceptable to me. I have to mention that my battery is one and a half years old, but I always took good care of it (I never let it discharge too much and never left it charge too much, as both of those, over time, can reduce its storage capacity).
Im using Albe95 rom with a custom kernal and the battery is draining slightly less, ive reduced my brightness to 60% and its drained from 100% to 77% in standby and extremely light use in 6hrs (about 4hrs standby drained 6% and 2 hrs of on off use every now and then drained about 17%. I guess im used to my old LG L70 D320n witch could hold up at full brightness forever. Will Cyanogenmod 13 bring much improvement for me?

You won't miraculously get 5-6 hours SOT even if the battery is new.
Maybe with lowest brightness, WiFi and mobile data off you will.
Underclocking and undevolting might help a little, but I don't see anyway of getting more than 5 hours.

There's a guide in the general section, _Bon_Bon's tweaks.., Something along those lines is the title.
It has a guide on how to increase battery life.
The guide is based on alucard kernel, though.
Alucard kernel is available for any 5.0 and 5.1 roms. But there is no public build for android 6.
Only JDCTeam roms have alucard kernel for android 6. Those roms are Optimized CM13 and AOSP 6.0 rom.

Ok so slowly things have improved but today when it was at 9% (6:30pm charged this morning) it froze up and i pulled the battery. Then it jumped down to 2% at restart! This has happened before (cant remember if it was on stock rom or the note 5 rom im using on it now) from 40% freeze, pull battery, restart, 22%! Any idea why this happens. The freezes might be caused by CPU undervolting, if you did any.
But the battery percentage dropping suddenly is a sign of a bad battery. It might drop 2 or 3% during the boot up, but not 20%.

The freezes might be caused by CPU undervolting, if you did any.

Samsung say the phone is the problem. Today i got to 40% and it jumped to 30% within 20 mins. Then i pulled the battery and started the phone up, repeating this multiple times to see the battery percentage. It jumped between 24% 15% and 19% up and down each time i pulled battery and restarted (no crashing just to see what happens). Is this enough to tell Samsung ITS NOT MY PHONE.

Apparently they refuse to accept the possibility that they might have sold you a faulty battery, so they blame the phone.
I don't see how the phone might drain the battery from a hardware perspective.
It's possible from a software perspective, but since you changed roms it is unlikely to be software related.
Did you install any apps to check if the phone enters deep sleep? Or if there is anything keeping the CPU at max frequency?

Ok ive done it a few more times and it seems to possibly be a calibration issue. But ive calibrated it multiple times before

How did you calibrate it?
Battery calibration apps are a placebo. What they do is they delete the batterystats.bin file which, as stated by a Google engineer, has no relation to battery life or the battery display.
Also, that file gets deleted automatically at every reboot by android itself.
What you could do is:
First let your battery fully discharge, until the phone turns off. Then try to turn it back on. If it turns on, proceed to use it until it turns off again. Do this until the phone won't turn on again.
Now the battery is completely empty and you can plug it in to charge. Let it charge to 100% without interruptions.
Take into account that it can take up to 3 hours to fully charge.

Haha done this before to no avail. Will do again but i noticed battery life is generally better if i leave it charging for 10hours after its charged fully. Instead of taking it off when it gets to 100% but i think a long worded and very angry email is about to be sent to the Samsung repair centre

on my travels around google I've read many times that with lithium batteries you NEVER want to completely discharge or overcharge them. give it 10 minutes extra once fully charged, not more. you're damaging the poles or terminals or something I can't remember fully when at either extreme. all you achieve is a shorter lifespan for your battery.
discharge it until it turns off but never until it can't turn on again. it has a chip in the battery that needs to stay powered too.
