Hey
Now. i know this has been asked alot before etc.. but i havent found my answer so im making my own thread and providing some information on my device
I got my Sgs4 a few days ago and ive been hitting temps of up to 60-62 ...
My questions.
a) These high temperatures, erh... arent they killing(not draining.killing) the battery? cuz i recently read Li-ion shouldent get above 40?
b) Is there ANY fix for this without root?
c) Should i rma it when its hitting such high temps? or will i just get a device where the same thing happends..?.
d) Would this possibly be fixable with a future software update?
Now, here's some information
Before the s4 i had s3 and i remember it being hot and shutting off in the first months i had it, but a update solved it. Buuut unlucky as i am i broke it :/ so i bought the s4.
My s4 is the quadcore Snapdragon 600.
I've done/gotten 0 software updates.
I've tried dissabling some programs (look attachments)
I've used power saving mode. still gets hot.
I've tried rebooting
I've tried changing the Micro sdhc and tried removing it completely too.
The only thing i found helpful was laying the phone on top of my pc fan :/..
Ive attached some pictures with my specs etc..
The temp was recorded using '' #*0228# '' code
Hopefully some awesome person will help me
Images are posted by Om22 lower in post number 6 because i cant add em myself

How do i check the temp? Do i need an app?
So far based on my observations my phone heats up when playing games. As for surfing it heats up more if you use LTE/4g. when the connection icon changes to H it doesnt heat up as much when in 4g.
My workaround so far is when my screen is off, it auto shuts down all connections by using a profile manager app. No push notifications though but it does save up my battery and avoid heating. Im still waiting for an update that fixes this overheating issue. sucks to not be able to use push just for the sake of the phone not heating up...
*EDIT: nvm i figured the code out from the OP. mine reached 55c

type *#0228# on the keyboard. at the top it shows network state, then battery state and temperature, at the bottom it says "external thermistor" and that's the phone temperature. my s4 heats up to 50° just by browsing xda app, 65° when watching youtube. sometimes can't even touch the space under the camera it's so hot.

Just a warning to all using the FreeX10/other 2.2+ performance ROMs that I experienced is the overheating of the device. This may only be me, but I'm posting this just in case.
Quick details of my X10:
Flashed to FreeX10 Beta #4 last night.
Used SetCPU to set scaling to Performance and minimum clock speed @ 998MHz.
Using the 3G (build.prop) enhancement modification.
I have a rubber casing around the phone.
Usually connected to WiFi.
My phone has been on since last night and has been charging for most of the time since then and now.
Just then, I decided to turn my phone off a couple of times. I did not notice the heat from just holding it. I was browsing here and read a thread about removing the battery, so I just did that for some reason. It wasn't until I opened the case when I could smell the smell of melted/hot plastic - it was coming from the battery. I immediately placed the open-phone and the battery in front of a cool fan, the battery and phone both started to cool down and the smell disappeared. I couldn't find any liquid/melted plastics anywhere on/in the phone, but I could definitely smell it.
Just a general friendly warning (that can't hurt). Not sure if it's documented or not, and whether this is only Froyo or below/above.
Used SetCPU to set scaling to Performance and minimum clock speed @ 998MHz.

nytral is right. You set the CPU to run @998Hmz at _all time_ so it'[s only natural that the device/battery overheated.

u have managed to make a perfect guide on how to overheat the phone...
u push all the components to their max working capacity (full cpu, 'enhancement' of radio) and on top of that u keep it enclosed in a rubber casing...
bravo!!!

Sorry, Min is 245. Not 998.. :-/
And I'm pretty sure the material of the casing (rubber vs hard plastic) wouldn't matter, but would contribute to the heating. I'm sure that a lot of people would use a case of some sort to protect their device.
The only reason why I started this thread is because I was on a ROM not too long ago (a couple of nights ago), which has exactly the same settings and modifications, except, it wasn't running Froyo - it was running Eclair. And since I installed that Eclair ROM, the phone has only been turned off once (with the battery removed, about a couple of days after installing it and it being on and charging pretty much 24/7) and has been charging pretty much non stop.
The only difference is it is using Froyo instead of Eclair... Hence why I thought it'd be best to start this thread.

lol nice overheat guide
i'm using setcpu to scale it to powersafe and max @512 Hz
and when the screen is off it's max is set to the lowest (256?)
and when i wanna play games i always set it to min 256(?) and may 998 ans performance
then my battery won't drain so fast
nice overheating guidelines
Do you guys actually see a difference with setcpu? I have used every option available and nothing ever got slower or faster for me.

Yeah I'm running 2.2.1 and my X10 is no where near hot. well, at least in temperature because its a hot-sexy phone ;P
Nice overclocking there though X10 watercooling systems now in development, expect another forum branch to open in XDA in the next coming weeks.
To my understanding the 2.6.29 doesn't support overclocking so setcpu shouldn't make a difference at all. The rubber case probably contributed to the heat retention but the heat likely is from the constant charging.

Try the JuiceDefender app and set it to turn off wifi and data when your screen is off or unless certain apps are visible, helps with battery and stops unused functions while your phone sleeps.

Try charging the phone while its off. Ive heard people say that their phone wouldnt charge past a certain point but after charging it whilst off it returned to charging back to 100 percent. I bought a new usb cable for my charger after the terminal end into the phone became deformed and my phone now charges ~3x faster but ive never had it get abnormally hot.

Its funny that anyone with the know how or has supposedly read these forums continue to pay for (or pirate!) apps that have no effect. WITHOUT UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER AND CUSTOM KERNEL OVERCLOCKING APPS HAVE NO EFFECT! Check the overclock option in JuiceDefender, this option is not supported! The developer of the app has apparently left out any notice that it doesnt work with our kernel so they can continue to make sales.

probably using that particular GPS software, not just GPS antenna by itself?
does it heat up if you just display GMaps with your location, without doing anything heavy in GMaps? Because I did not notice that much heat coming from using light GPS apps. Gaming - yes, some of those games are killers.
I am using Navigon software. I played Angry Birth and the same, phone was hot after 5min. I know is normal that phone is warm, but this is not warm, but hot.Galaxy S was cold compare to S II.

Of course it's NOT normal. Might be normal for SGS2 but not for others. as I've said on another thread, Navigating with GPS driving it got to 60C, you could slowly cook an egg at 60C.
Mine doesn't get especially warm, It gets well 4-5 degrees warmer when I browse the web or watch HD movies
It's think it's high screen brightness in combination with SW (high CPU load)!
Mine is never warm if brightness is kept below 50%

You can download the same stress test program as i'm using from Android Market. It's called StabilityTest v1.5.
it will test your CPU's on your Galaxy S II if you are overclocking it. But you can check the temprature even if you aren't overclocking.
the temp rise is sort of random, i can play games for hours (and its 26C here) with brightness on auto and so on, it doesnt get hot
then suddenly, it does, sometimes even when im not doing much
didnt get the time to pin point w/e thing creates that behavior
(and when i say hot ofc im talking of very very hot - which is what everyone talks about imo)
killall or restart and its good to go til it happens again

I'm running that app now. I wanted to get an idea of temperatures at stock before undervolting/clocking so I could see how much difference it made. But the phone is seriously hot to the touch, enough to be worrying about. The app's reporting 50C after 37min but it feels hotter than that to me.
Some components are designed to run hot. For example I have an ATI 4850 that happily runs 70+C at idle is rated for up to 120C. But I'm worried even if the exynos can handle these temps what about the other components? The top of the screen feels even hotter back. Could this cause damage to the display for example?
This is my first smart phone but having that much heat in such a tightly packed device seems like a recipe for failure.
You will find temps of 50 deg centigrade and more when using all resources of SGS II (e.g. nav with wikitude drive = camera on) and phone attached to car screen on a sunny hot day.
This is normal!
Touch a nav-device in action and You will find it glowing ......
But contrary to HTC HD 2 SGS II does not freeze or crash at that point.
Leave a device switched off in direct sunlight in a car and it will get hot too, but still it will work .....

my phone was getting extremely hot when benchmarking etc, this was default clock and voltages.
the phone reported it was reaching 50 degrees. thought this was "normal". this was on the firmware the phone was running outta the box.
flashed latest firmware and have since messed about with overclocking, @ 1650 my phone never got as hot as it did stock.
so if you have not done it, flash the latest FW...
So your cpu is not 1200 but 1650mHz now?

Been running tons of different ROMs on tons of different Android devices, and every once in a while there is a particular combo that gets tremendously hot.
Once had my N1 get so hot while using Co-Pilot Live and Spotify while plugged into a car charger, that it turned off and wouldn't come on again for some 5-10 minutes.. Definitely worrying.. Switched ROMs and never saw the problem again.

How do you even state heat up without mentioning the temp?
Have a basic idea, based on an ambient of 30°C,
Charging- 50-55°C,
Charging+ Gaming- 55-60/62°C,
Normal Use for more than an hour with WiFi On- 40-45°C,
Moderate Use for half an hour- 35-40°C,
Standby for half an hour- Below 35°C.
That's just an overall idea I tried to input.

This. Give us some temps of normal and when gaming to see if it is abnormal (there are apps on the market that allow you to do this). Chances are, it isn't. The phone has to use more power to run games and processor intensive applications. It getting warmer is normal.

I find myself getting massive lag and stutter on the s4 I dunno if there's something wrong with the device or if everyone else is experiencing the same thing. same, barely getting any battery juice out of it, i find myself constantly charging it throughout my day, also my 4G isn't turned on. also getting performance lagg when going out of apps and playing games. also scrolling lagg on Facebook and typing lagg. hope im not alone! D:
That does seem pretty strange. I haven't really noticed any lag whatsoever (a slight wait when exiting some apps, but i can count the times on one hand), and my battery has been good. I use 4G or wifi all day, syncing is always on, google now, listening to aprox 40 min of music each day, lots of mail, some texts and probably 20-40 mins of talking every day, some videos now and then and so on. Still, i usually have 10-30% left when i go to bed at night.
Idk if you guys have turned down the animations? that can help against the feeling of lag at least, and it speeds up everything no matter what you do, so try it. It's under development or something.
The battery drain i can't explain though. Any apps you guys use a lot? idk, but it seems very different from the juice i've been getting out of this. A lot better than my S3. Probably on par with my Note 2, if not better. That might just be my imagination though. lol
My battery is great especially compariong to the S3, 24 hr usage 2.5 hr screen time 40% left... Every now and then a get a stutter when scrolling through homescreens or in and out of browser or heavy memory apps. But like the above poster so far I can count these times with one hand. I am enjoying this device, its a great update from the S3 especially the battery consumption and speed.
mmm, animations turned to 0.5 and constantly checking facebook and social media, the apps i have i use constantly and install if usefull, except the few lone games i pay for on special that i never touch

i think you guys are snapdragon users of s4.. cant say what's causing you this but my octocore is well almost lagless(only whatsapp lags, cant be s4's problem). battery life well i was previously a gnex user and i can hardly believe that a smartphone experience can get better than this while still having enough juice left).. even on power saving mode its performing flawless. i was just a bit disappointed with not being able to use lockscreen widgets while having a security pattern.. but that can be fixed later on.
My I9505 is excellent as per my comment above... And the other user is also I9505 and he also is having no problems
Start turning off the sensors (Air View, Air Gesture, etc.) then check again if it makes any difference.

Putting transition time to zero means no more transition animation. Sure cannot detect any animation lag or not.
mine has 0 lag - ive rooted mine, changed a few things here and there, frozen apps i dont/wont use to get the best performance results
As for battery - ive turned off all of the sensors when not using them, keep wifi/4G on constantly and use my phone very regularly throughout the day and i can only burn off about 45% from 5am (wake up, go to the gym, listen to music through my phone for a whole hour in the morning) to when i go to bed at 9pm at night.
I noticed a lag in the spell auto correction. When typing fast , the " blue" suggested word appears with some small delay. And by that time, instead of the suggested word, I put the previous one word that has stayed in blue.... So in order to put the correct one I have to wait for second the suggested word to change/appear in blue... (I use the stock Samsung keyboard)

If you switch off all animations ' all motions and switch off the home screen

Hello XDA,
I decided to open this topic as I've been fumbling around with my device alot lately. Lately I've started to notice a dramatic increase of temperature while using my device running simple tasks like chrome, whatsapp etc. This only sometimes gets the device till 45-50 degrees Celsius, this is the CPU's temperature. While gaming, it reaches a whopping 60C ! Flashed to stock, updated to new base, reboot after reboot did not solve this issue. While charging sometimes it gets really really hot!
Now I'm wondering about your experiences, how hot does your CPU get doing what tasks? I'm wondering because im contemplating whether or not bring my device in to a service center as I've never had a device CPU above 45 degrees celsius.

I've always wondered if more users experienced the same issue, now i'm doubting whether or not even to send it to samsung or not. Any more people are more than welcome to share their experiences
Anyone else?

I think its normal.
Does your phone start to lag when it gets hot? If not, then in my opinion you are still safe.
Same here, but I only realized it was heating last month. Maybe it has something to do with a background process? Sometimes I can even feel the heat when my phone is in my pocket
It doesnt lag, but it does heat up ALOT while doing light tasks, up to 50C

Sameer, not even while gaming? Sure you don't have a very big case on your phone?

My S4 heats up on charge with any battery.
I found mine goes really hot on charge than heat goes down on trickle charge.
