Hi, I want to buy a new phone and I'm choosing between the Galaxy Nexus and S III. Which one do you recommend? I like how the Nexus looks, and getting updates first. I like the specs in the S III but I'm not a big fan of how it looks and I definitely don't like the TouchWiz UI. Where I live there is not much difference in price. What would you recommend? Thanks in advance!
The current Nexus phone has been out for a while now. It was initially released in 11/17/2011 and made its way to the US in 12/15/2011, it is about 7-8 months old already. The S3 on the other hand is much more recent.
With that said, I, too, find Nexus more attractive because it's not filled with bloatware and is pure Google and gets updates quickly. If you can wait, I'd recommend to hold off until the next Nexus phone is released.
In terms of price, you can get a nexus for 1 cent on Amazon wireless, 149.99 for a gs3.
In terms of feature set and specs, its all preference. I love the big screen on the s3 and its classy look versus the dull galaxy nexus grey.
If price is no object get the s3 hands down, just be patient on ROMs.

I agree with the above post, but not completely. What carrier are you on? If its Verizon, with the locked bootloader debacle of the galaxy s3, they may not get the new nexus. Additionally, the Verizon nexus didn't get the updates as fast as the GSM versions. On the other hand, if you are on a GSM carrier and are completly happy with your coverage, i would maybe wait for the nexus.
I do love my Galaxy s3, but i will always be envious of the nexus.

if you have the $199 upgrade option to galaxy s iii, then take that. if you're paying straight cash, i'd get the nexus probably second hand from ebay or swappa.
Stay away from the nexus, is great as a multimedia device and to mess around with ROMs but is horrible as a phone.
I would get the s3, cm9 is stable enough for daily driver and cm10 will be stable soon, I like the GSM galaxy nexus but internal storage kills it, and the camera is not good enough sometimes , s3 you can switch over cm9 if you dislike touchwiz so much

Get the S3 if you don't mind signing a contract. The hardware specs such as the S4 processor, GPU and 2GB of RAM are better than what the Nexus is offering. However, if you want Jelly Bean now, then get the HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus with no contract.
At this point I would say, if you can wait a few more months, just hold out for the next Nexus. (If you really want a nexus device)

I see people saying wait for the next Nexus. Is there some kind of overall consensus on when it will come out (by the forum-goers)? Because when I think about it, I can definitely see a situation where the next one comes out maybe even mid-next year or later...
I have also had this question in my mind (S3 vs. Nexus). I'll probably go for the better hardware and use diff ROMs if necessary (I really like Jelly Bean and I fear how long it may take S3 to get that...)

Thats a lame comment. Yes The Nexus is Older, but in the end, it does not mater if you have a 18Mp camera and you are stock on Gingerbread and waiting for samsung or your carrier to push you bloatware and updates once a year..

Lol. I don't necessarily feel the S3 is THAT much better than the Nexus, but I love how everyone says S3 and this guy orders the Nexus anyway.

I'm going to admit I'm biased already on several levels:
* I hate waiting for OS updates from carriers/OEM's
* My usual M.O. is not to be an early adopter of any just-released tech
* The N4 specs aren't that far behind the 2013 flagships
* My carrier supports DC HSPA speeds
* No bloatware
But I have a few questions:
Do you think judging by past patterns, that the N4 will continue to get updates well ahead of HTC for the next year from April even though it's been out since November 2012?
Do you think the N4's specs will give it a shelf life as long as the HTC One for at least another year in terms of performance and speed?
How is 4.2.2 on the N4? Did it still remain fast? Is this a fast and lag free phone compared to this year's OEM flagships? I played around with its carrier branded sister the LGOG and it was extremely fast and smooth just running in ICS so I'm hoping the N4 on JB is also, is it?
And just for the record, I'm not concerned about another Nexus hitting the shelf this fall, if that happens I'll just ebay this one and buy the next.

It will get the updates, 4.2.2 is great, and it'll perform perfectly fine for probably 2 years. I don't see quad core as ever really becoming too slow, in fact I don't think it will go much further than quad core.

Had Htc one s for two weeks and after getting N4 I don't regret sending it back.
Btw I'm not the biggest fan of sense os so that would have to go too straight away lol

If you like to or plan to flash and do heavy mods to the OS then stick with the N4. Well already have a more active developer community. And if want the latest greatest version of Android you always have to do Nexus device
If picture quality is important to you then do the HTC One (Optical image stabilization and superior low light performance).
If you watch a lot of YouTube or listen to music using the phone speakers, the front facing stereo speakers on the One will be beneficial.
Both have very good build quality but the front and back edge to edge glass on the N4 make it less drop friendly than the aluminum unibody of the One.
In day to day stuff I don't think you'll see a huge difference in performance between the two so I'd call that a wash.
Tough call. Both are great phones. Just depends on your priorities.

The one is going to be a bad ass phone, but you have to like sense...which i do. Some people hate it.
But, if you plan on getting the one and flashing and doing all that, I'd just go with the n4.

I think you answered your own question lol. I mean how much better can "specs" get for a phone? And why do we need these specs to reach such heights? Do we just want these "specs" just to say we have them? Because that's what it seems like at this point...2gb ram + quad core takes care of my needs and should for the next 2 years.
It just seems like people are waiting for the next best thing and I don't see it getting much better for a phone of this quality at this price point off contract. Not to mention, no bloatware, the dev community and the quick updates. I guess I'm just a simple man

id say nexus 4. tthe htc one is so nice and i would buy it but i bet you you can buy 2 of these Nexus 4s for the price of a HTC One on release. And US release is delayed to end of april. And if you want sense 5 because ofthe dev community here, I bet you can get it.There's not much going for the htc one unless you want the actual hardware and the ultrapixel camera, etc. but very steep in price. if you have tmobile, nexus 4 is future proof for LTE.

The worst part of HTC is the CID numbers, if you don`t have the international CID you can root what you want but you will not be able to update to the latest version untill it is released for your region/carrier. BTW unlocking the bootloader may void warranty, even if restored too stock RUU it wil stay say RELOCKED. For me never again HTC. So as you may have guessed i would choose the N4 handsdown.

And a good choice that is! The One is an excellent phone but once you go aosp it's hard to go back to OEM skins, especially with software updates and the next version of Android is nearing ever close and you'll get to enjoy pretty much soon after rather than wait for carrier or OEM to update them!

Hey guys,
I am thinking about getting a Nexus 4 to replace my HTC Sensation. The Sensation has many problems such as huge battery drain and it gets extremely hot during usage. So I thought the Nexus 4 would be a great idea. Pure Android (huge fan of that, was using CM for a long time on my Senny) and Google Support sound good and the price seems to be okay to (I could buy a 16GB variant for about 310€).
Is this phone great? Is it still worth buying considering it's already nearly a year old? Does it have some know problems such as huge battery drain or display problems?
I need this phone for browsing, using the calendar, writing emails/sms and sometimes taking photos. I don't play any games on it except 4 pictures 1 word.

I too came from a Sensation, and it's a fine upgrade, for all the reasons you mention. Perhaps not as durable as HTC's build quality, so be sure to include a decent cover (I use the Diztronic TPU and it looks factory) to protect that beautiful glass. It's a joy to use..you can't go wrong. Cheers!

I came from a galaxy s2, and previously HOX tegra. I bought a N4 2 weeks ago, and in stock its pretty smooth, awesome i'd say. Better price/performance choice. You wont regret

I bought a Nex4 about 6 weeks ago after being a long term BB user, our company provide BB but have just let us go BYOD. I got N4 to replace the BB and so far it hasn't disappointed in any way. I also wanted the pure Android experience after my N10. The phone has been a good choice.

Honestly, if that is all you use your phone for, you should get the Lumia 1020. But if you want to stay with Android and can wait 4 more months, the 5th Nexus will be out then and should the price be as low as the Nexus4, then it would be better to get that.

The Lumia 1020 would be out of the price range. I'd never pay 400€+ for a phone I only use for work. I probably can't wait till the next release because the Senny really bugs me. I can't use a phone which burns in my hand because it's getting extremely hot while chewing through battery like nothing. My Sensation barely gets through the day with moderate use.
€: And I don't like WP because I'm a huge fan of costumization.
Keep the Sensation or whatever you have and wait for Nexus 5, trust me on this.

I can't sincerely tell someone to purchase a 7 month old device when knowing a faster device will come for the same price in due time.
Well you can go on buying Nexus 4, everything is a beauty when you compare prices and then it is a google phone so it always have it perks.
If you think you should wait for nexus 5 then its not very much pretty soon bcz this time google launched s4 and htc one as google variant which means next nexus will take time.
Your tasks which u need to perform as you have mentioned would all be performed very well.
Tip I can give even for better battery.
Unlock the bootloader, use custom recovery such as CWM and flash CM 10.1 stable releases which ever is latest.
Find franco kernel and flash that and for better colours use its colour profile.
You will have an outstanding experiance with great display and great battery time.

People will and should buy the device that suits their needs and the price they are willing to pay.
If you want a unlocked / contract free phone the device is a good choice
The entire motion that a new device will be out in a couple months is pointless. He wants a phone now. A couple months is just that. A couple months living with a phone he doesn't want. Then when the next nexus device comes out there will be the next best thing on the horizon.
He a is a basic user that doesn't participate in the stupid I need the lastest and greatest hw spec race.
Sitting around waiting for 4 plus months for a device is just stupid.
Why buy a HTC one now? The plus version is coming? Why by a s4 now? The advanced or whatever version with the 800 is coming in a couple of months.

To each their own, I cannot speak for the needs of TC nor their personal interests. Whether he's comfortable with waiting X months is currently unknown and has not been divulged in this topic, so we can agree to disagree.
He said he probably can't wait for the next release because his phone bugs him.
Even a device like the HTC first would suit him fine hardware and software wise. Not unlocked and cheap of course ( don't even think it launched outside the US or unlocked) but just talking the device itself
There are plenty of users who are not concerned with the I can read the spec sheet pissing matches. Wait for the latest and greatest chip so they can have a higher score in benchmarks etc.
Its definitely still worth buying full price. Its a great device especially if you're a fan of stock android like you said.

I really don't need high specs. Benchmarks never intersted me because at the end you probably won't feel any difference between for example the snapdragon 600 and the snapdragon 800 in everyday use. I just want the phone to work well without stuttering and without any hick ups.

If you need a phone now, just go for it. If you are not in a hurry, you can wait and see what comes up. IMO I usually don't want the first batch of the phone anyway since they are usually the ones with problems.

Root and flash cyanogenmod and Franco kernel... That made me a delighted user from a happy user...
Besides it'll have developer support for hell lot of a time to come... Even after people forget about HTC one and s4..

Hi guys...... I just want to know your reasons why didn't you upgrade to the new nexus 7.
For me, i dont think i need to upgrade because mine still working better using PA w/ faux kernel in it. I had issues before with screen flickerin, auto turn off when battery reaches down to 32%, slow charging...but it's all fixed now. Found a lot of ways solve the problem. Lagfix works better for me so i dont have any problems with lag.
Im also happy using OTG for sharing photos from my sony nex-5n camera. So i think i dont need a camera on a tablet.

4.3 fixed the trim issue so nobody should have lag issues. I, like you, don't feel the need to upgrade. Mine does everything I need/want it to do. Sure I like nice new shiny toys but just can't justify $250ish, give or take a little depending on size, for something that performs all the same functions as last year's model.

I will upgrade at some point, but I'm not in a rush. Two reasons for that:
1) This isn't an essential device for me. Just a casual "toy" that's great to have. I still live and die by my desktop and I'll probably never fully fit into the mobile world (Still refuse to own a phone).
2) For reasons I can't explain...maybe the upgrade to 4.3 or the fact I added another router in my house that gets a strong signal to my N7, or both, this device is working smoother and faster than it EVER has. Browsing the net, in particular, is comparable to my desktop experience now. Bottom line: everything is fast and lag free.
So, yeah, I'd like to have the new one, but with my 1st gen working so well I can't justify the cost as it's not an essential piece of tech for me...
Well... I don't think it's available here in the UK until August 28. Or at least according to Wikipedia it isn't.
And even then I don't think I'll buy it... already spent more money on tech and software this year than I should have.
I'll probably wait, until the run up to Christmas, when local stores will be vying for competition... and as a result there'll be some cost cutting. Not by much I grant, but £10 or £20 shaved off the RRP sounds good to me.
Also, I'm never a huge fan of immediately buying tech just when it's been released - it usually comes with a cornucopia of bugs, hardware defects and other unpleasant idiosyncrasies. Give it five or six months, and those wrinkles will likely have been ironed out.
And in any case, 4.3 is running sweetly on my current Nexus 7... so much so, in fact, that I doubt I'll ever bother with Custom ROMs/Kernels.
I'm a man of simple tastes... Root, Nova Launcher and AOSP browser is all I really need. (+ some core apps).

Not upgrading because my Nexus 7 still works like a charm, being able to do anything I could wish and because I simply don't have the money/don't want to spend it on it.

Now I've got a fast rom and kernel and am running 4.3, I can't see the need.
I'd like the better screen, but I'll wait until all the issues are resolved before I look again.

Multirom is not yet available on N7 2013. I couldnt go to a tablet without a multiboot solution anymore. The ability to run 4.2.2 roms, 4.3 roms and Ubuntu desktop for n7 all at the same time has allowed me to be desktop and laptop free.

I'm waiting just in case they do the same thing they did last year and drop the lower end model and introduce a higher capacity one at the same price point. I was furious after buying a 16gb model in 2012 for $250 only to have them release a 32gb model for the same price a few months later! I'll gladly wait for a possible 64gb at $269 or even $299. If it hasn't happened by the time the Nexus 5 (or whatever they're gonna call it) drops this fall then I'll feel safer buying it (after I get my hands on the next Nexus phone of course...!). The good thing is, I already have a handful of people that want to buy my old one from me just cause they know it's already pimped and will include tech support (from me lol)

I've got 4.3, one of the main reasons I would upgrade. And my needs are very simple. Mostly forum reading aps, like this one. News, Wikipedia, the occasional web search, and YouTube.
The first gen handles that with ease. My 5" Phablet handles everything else.
So i will wait and see what is new in the future at this size.

Our Nexus 7 has the newest Android version and has still a very fast cpu and gpu. I don't see any reason for spending 250€ again for a new device.

As I live in the UK I can't even see the new model to appreciate just what differences there could be over an above that what I already have got with my 16GB Nexus 7.
But mine seems to be more than adequate to meet my needs.
I do, on occasion, get to use my wife's Xoom and with that being a 10" tablet I do like the screen size difference and I now seem to be more interested in the up and coming replacement for the Nexus 10 rather than this model. However price will be a big influence there.
Having already got a tablet I do not think of the value that they offer as a stand alone device, if that makes sense, but more of what they offer over and above what I have got.
I suppose that goes part way to explain why I'm not too much interested in the 2013 version of the Nexus 7.
I haven't upgraded yet because I remember how it went with the original Nexus 7: I bought one shortly after it came out, then a model with double the storage hit the market for the exact same price and the one I had dropped down.
I'll be waiting for the 32gb model to hit in November for the exact or near same price as the current 16gb model.

Like others have already said, my current N7 is doing what I need it to just fine!
Also, I found that I wouldn't mind having the mobile connectivity when I choose to; so I think I'd only upgrade if they came out with the LTE model in Canada.

I don't want to upgrade because of putting out the cash. I like my 1st gen tablet. It works great, fast and does everything I need it to do. Other than the sake of having something new, meh I don't care.
I am confused, I had a galaxy note 2 for few months but i recently lost it I am currently using a non smartphone and I know that lots of new phone will be announced next week at IFA berlin 2013 but am not willing to spend a lot on a phone after losing my note 2.
Nexus 4 prices are gone down to clear out the stock for nexus 5 but am not sure if it will be as cheap as nexus 4 was when it first launched. what do you suggest, should i wait till nexus 5 is announced and see if its worth it or get a nexus 4 now?
I also wanted to know if the battery life is good enough to last me a whole day since my note 2 had 3100mah compared to nexus 4 2000mah?

The battery is good, atleast for me, I can easly get 1 day out of it.
Hmm well PERSONALLY I would buy the N4. But that's because I can't wait when buying something new and because I think that the N4 is already so smooth that you don't some more cores/ghz etc like the N5, because how much faster can it get? The heaviest games are already smooth so...
Maybe only a camera improvement would be nice.
Eitherway it's up to you, these are just my 2 cents.

Nexus 4 is indeed an amazing phone with the best pure android experience.
Of course all top branded high end androids will have support community for custom Roms and latest android features.
If you want some more customized UI like touchwiz or sense you can try something else.
But take into consideration that Nexus 4 is a value for money device with high performance which leaves most users satisfied.
It also has a unique design , a nice manufacturer and support both LG and Google.
I would recommend you to give it a try.
( another option for me is Moto X . very nice looks , customizable case , nice features etc. )
Just to reiterate what the other's have said, it's a brilliant value for money device, and recently in the UK at least there has been a 33% price drop from £239 to £159 which is absolutely crazy for a device of this spec. That's like a quarter of the price of the S4 which experiences more lag than the Nexus 4 if kept on touchwiz.
If you're one of those people who gets bored of the phone quite quickly, wait for the N5, I'm sure the price point will be just as good.
Nexus 5 isnt out yet and look at those people coming with their answers to buy n4.
First of all op it would be wise to sit and wait for n5 to come out and compare it on the based reviews with n4.
Then and only then you can say which phone suits you best.

I recently broke my Note 2 and bought a Nexus 4 to replace it, so I feel I should chime in.
1) The Nexus has horrible battery life compared to the Note 2. I wish it wasn't so, but I've recently even gotten a battery pack to recharge it on the go. It lasts maybe 50% as long, and this is with the most recent update (jwr66y). --- EDIT: OP asked if he could use it all day. For me, it's a maybe. With light usage, yes, but not if you use it like you could the Note 2.
2) Switching from the big screen to the small one has been a real challenge. I've caught myself looking at tablets a lot lately, and I never felt I needed one with the Note.
3) While pure android is nice, touchwiz is nice too. I consider them a toss up.
4) The Nexus 4 is a very nice device. It has good build quality, a nice screen, runs fast, and enabling LTE is easy (with T-Mo at least).
Bottom line, I'm seriously considering buying the Note 3 when it releases in the coming weeks, and keeping the Nexus as a backup. It's either that or getting a tablet, but I'd much rather continue to have 1 device.

It's different when there's maybe a 2 month wait vs. a 14 month wait. I'll be waiting for the 5.
Buy N4 and then sell it off resale value will ofc be good till N5 is released.

lol, i think you missed my point, it was an attempt at humor. thats why i included this guy--> :silly:
Well, I have a gnex and a nexus 4, and the nexus 4 is a massive improvement over the gnex, however I'm not sure a nexus 5 phone will be a massive leap over the nexus 4 unless klp is more resource heavy. My n4 is buttery smooth and I even considered buying another one just because there only 200$ now. Go for the nexus 4 and you can probably resell it in a year for 200-300$ still
