I tried to open up an MMS about 5 minutes ago and now messaging locks up entirely every time I try to access any texts. I don't want to switch to an alternate app, but I may have to at this point. Anybody know a fix? I've tried force stopping, clearing cache, and clearing data.
Factory reset?

I've been on Rubix since 1.9.0 and this is the second time I've seen this issue.
It's possible that the first time the crash happens is unrelated but here goes: I was out in the middle of nowhere with intermittent service (BLM land in California). I got a decent bit of service, stopped driving, hit send on a text (using GO SMS) and while waiting for it to send I lost service. Then got service back and instantly I got a force close of com.android.mms.
The message will now stay in the thread with the status of "Sending...". When I attempt to send another message using GO SMS it just hangs in the "Sending..." status and does nothing. If I try with the stock messaging app it force closes on me the instant I send.
This happened to me before on RubiX 1.9.7 and happened this weekend on 2.0.1. I did a Titanium Backup of all my stuff, wiped, went back to stock RubiX 2.0.1, restored my TiBackup and I get the same force close. I only restored apps and "green" data items.
I'm about to wipe again and omit restoring anything MMS related (as I believe that's how I fixed it before). I've tried repairing permissions (using ROM Manager), wiping cache, clearing data from the Messaging app in Application Manager, deleting buttloads of messages and nearly all MMS messages, nothing has worked.
Anyone else seen this happen, on RubiX or other ROMs?
I've had something similar happen on liberty 1.5. Whenever I tried to send an mms message, it would force close and not send. I fixed it by reflashing the rom

Did you restore all your text messages after re-flashing, and did you have the same issue after restoring?
I used the GO SMS backup service to backup and restore my messages. Sending messages was fine after I just re-flashed yesterday; but after I restored my messages (580, I believe) messaging started force closing on me again. Looks like it's SMS quantity related... they just add up so fast!.
Guess this can be considered closed.
Greetings,
For about two weeks now, my phone has been having a strange quirk: it refuses to send SMS's to some numbers, with seemingly no connection between them. Handcent just displays the spinning indicator to indicate "Sending...", while the stock messaging app gives a generic error of "Couldn't send message!". I've tried phoning the provider, but they were just as stumped as I am.
The phone is rooted, but hasn't had any software installed around the time the problem presented first itself. Last week, I reflashed the ROM ad the Radio, just to be sure, to no change.
Is there a way to enable some sort of "advanced logging" that could give me an idea what Messaging does and communicates so I can give the provider something to start from? Or has anyone else encountered the same or a similar problem?
Does anyone have any idea what's causing this? It's driving me nuts and any help would be much appreciated...
Idk.. try wiping cache and dalvik, fix permission, clean install the ROM, wipe the cache from the messaging app...I haven't had problems with messaging so idk

Been there, done that, bought the T-shirt, and no changes. Definitely something with the phone, since it doesn't work with a new SIM either. It's a new problem for me too, and I ended up taking it back to the provider. I'll see what the repair techs can come up with...
I rooted my Note 3 using the Kingo method when I got my Note 3 on Wednesday. One thing I have noticed is that my notifications when I get text messags keep going non-stop, until I actually pick up the phone to reply to the text message. That is very distrubing. Is there a way that I can change the settings to where it the sound only beeps once?
Thanks
Do you have a third party messaging app or does this do it on stock? Anyhow, you can try force shopping the stock messaging app. Then clear cache/data. You might lose your messages though. You can also try wiping cache/Dalvik cache then reboot. Go to stock messaging app and then turn off Notifications. Reboot. Turn on notifications. Hope you can get it to work properly.

Thanks for replying. I do have GoSMS for my messaging. I had already disabled the stock messaging app but wasn't aware I had to clear the cache/data for it. I'll try that. Also have RCP Text Tones for my actual notification sounds. Phone is brand new, so I really wouldn't be losing much as far as messages.

Oh, I see. You can also try to clear cache/data on Text Tones to see if that helps. Sometimes when you let a third party app take care of things that the system is supposed to take care of, like ringtones and sound/led notifications, things get wonky!

My mom owns Zenfone 3 and it seems, that stock SMS app (Messenger from Google) is bugged. Unread counter always shows some unread messages, even when there are none. I tried reinstalling the app from factory, clearing data, cache etc, but it didn't help. How do I fix this?

You might need to try Asus messaging app from the following post (unavailable for zen 3 from play store) :
https://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone-3/themes/orginal-asus-messaging-apk-t3493987
It's very handy especially with 2 SIMs attached, customizable and most importantly fix the unread count issue.
Thanks, that's what I did and it works okay
So I was being a smartass the other day and opened my app list, showed system apps, and cleared the data from many, including Media Storage (lost my ringtones temporarily, had to download FX to rebuild), Contacts Storage (had to resync), Calendar Storage, and a whole bunch of other system apps with no icons that I could clear data from. Not wise I know.
Now, the phone is fine, except two things don't work: when selecting a contact in messages, and when selecting a time to be reminded in Bixby Reminders. Either will lead the app to crash, have tried uninstalling updates to those apps, and force stop, clear data. Anyone know if I can fix both issues without a factory reset ?

Try rebooting into recovery wipe cache?

Usually it is OK to clear cache, not data, unless your phone is having issues with a specific app. You can clear cache and data for messages app(then just set all the settings in that app's settings, if you need) and maybe you can try to find if you need to clear cache and data for reminder app itself or all of the Bixby apps(that is a tough call). After you have tried all of the above, you can of course try to wipe cache in recovery and mostly it is perfectly fine, but once I did that on my Note 5, I then couldn't receive receive incoming calls, they just never showed on the screen, as if no one was calling. All other phones were fine and didn't exhibit that.

I've tried clearing both cache and data, and uninstalled and reinstalled updates for Messages, Messaging Service, Bixby Reminders, and all other system apps with Bixby in the name. No luck so far.
It really did improve battery life, it's just there's something to lose I guess.
