After unroot, no upgrades? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I rooted my I337, but then decided to unroot. Now I get a message stating, “Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available” when I click UPDATE. Does this mean I will no longer receive OTA updates on my phone? I removed root and did nothing else to the phone.

Apparently root has not been removed completely... I recommend flashing one of djembey's stock roms through Odin and get official status back

I double checked my counts and it shows that I have official stock rom. And triple checked if I have root.

Samsung updates blocked on modified Note 8.0

Looks like updates have been blocked for rooted Note 8.0 devices. I get a message when I check for software updates under the about section in settings.

Unrooting using Framaroot, or use OTA Rootkeeper. Either way works, but be sure to reboot after unrooting. Otherwise you will just get the same error message about the system being modified. Also, if there any any bloat apps frozen or uninstalled, you will have to undo that (in addition to unroot) for the system to come up as not being modified.
This is a rather stupid move on Samsung's part.

Kies will still work for the update though, even modified, at least for me. I did however set Kies up with it stock & then selected the "Auto download updates" feature in Tools / firmware upgrade settings, so if there is an update, whenever I plug the N8 into my laptop, it tells me an update is available & then gives me the option to install it now or wait.
Even stranger though is that even modified, I can select to reprovision & install factory firmware (Upgrade & Initialization) on the Note 8, but now on the Note 10.1 once it says "modified" status, you lose the ability to provision & reset with Kies & you get the "N8013 does not support initialization" error, even though both are now running the MD3 firmware. Go figure.
Framaroot from the play store works to temporary unroot for purposes of updates. Just install it abd choose the option to temporarily unroot, then reboot and check for updates. It will download and install the update. I recommend another reboot when its finished. Then load up framaroot and restore root. All in all with a fast internet connection the whole process may take 10 minutes.

I tried using Framaroot to unroot my rooted N5100. I then checked for updates and it told me that they are not available to modified devices. I then even tried uninstalling everything and doing a factory reset and im still not able to check for updates. Any idea how to get my device back to the way it was out the box so i can check for updates?

OK used Kies to restore original firmware and this fixed it.

Like i said, u need to install kies on ur computer and then restore original firmware, this then made my status "original". And i was then able to update again. No new updates tho so rooted again.

No. The new boot loader checks the system partition for changes. So if you even have the SU binary or any other modified or new files in the System folder or any subfolder, it will not work for updates.
On other devices, like the Note 10.1, you have to revert to an older boot.img to be able to keep the status as unchanged. Unfortunately, that doesn't exist for the Note 8 as far as I know.
I have modified my multiwindow to work with all apps. When I used rootkeeper I was still able to update so I giess it works with some mods but not all.

I bought my Note 8 on June 11th and it received an immediate update. I rooted with Framaroot and a few days later I received another OTA update. But now, after that, it says it can't update and I can't get it to unroot...

Any tools to get a ota update even if rooted?

Anyway I can temp unroot safely and do a ota update? Looking to do a ota update even though I am rooted without having to use odin anyway?

Hi,
An OTA would unroot your phone anyway.
So you would have to re-root after you updated.

You Can Download the Latest Firmware Flash It Using ODIN and Then Root Ur Phone Again.
Thats the Best Way to Do it.
In Case If you just Need OTA then Factory reset Your Phone and You would get the Official Status Back

Hi,
You need to flash a stock ROM ,stock recovery ,then run Triangle Away from the market (if you were returning for warranty)
This will return your counter to 0.
It is all explained HERE
You should then be able to receive OTA

Help Unrooting (Rooted with motochopper)

Hi Guys,
I rooted my Samsung S4 (GT-9505) using motochopper, but since discovered some of my apps don't work with a rooted device.
I would like to unroot it back to factory settings.
What do I need to do? Is it a case of downloading an official ROM and using ODIN to flash the official bios back on?
I have reset the counter with TRIANGLE but my device status is still 'custom' and not official.
Is there a simple way of removing the root that motochopper adds or is an official ROM the only way?
Im in the UK and would like to flash to the latest Vodafone ROM and unrooted as new.
Many thanks
First of all, there's no app that would stop working because of a rooted device. Rooting just gains you administrator privileges, nothing more, nothing less. And yes, the best way to unroot and get the official status back is to download and flash an official rom through Odin.

Many thanks for your reply,
Unfortunatly your wrong there, Barclays PingIt (my bank account) knows when a phone has been rooted and displays an error page saying its breaching security and stops the app from working!! Crazy I know.
You can uninstall super su then reboot the phone.
You can get instructions from the Exynos Abuse thread by chainfire. It's at the bottom.

Hello there
I found that flixster wouldn't stream ultraviolet movies with root. I did find that using voodoo ota root keeper from play store helps that. Click on temp unroot, then when you've finished using that app that doesn't allow root, restore root. Unsure that this will work for you, but no harm in trying.

Can I get the update through Kies?

I don't care about losing root, can I get the latest update through Kies? OTA fails on me. Also if a Kies update is successful will everything return to stock? #Noob

Why not download the rooted latest release from the android development section? I do not believe you can accept ota updates or update firmware via kies while rooted. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Well I was rooted with a custom recovery got the ota to download but on reset it failed. So I when back to stock but I couldn't get it to download the update. The only way I got it to. Is the flash counter was reset and the status of phone was official.
Now it suxs not having root.

Device is modified?

My note 3 is running the belgian 4.4.2 I downloaded from Sam mobile and flashed with odin, though the phone says it is a custom rom and when I click check for updates it also says phone is modified.
Anyone know what the problem is here and how I can restore ota updates?
The phone was rooted when i was on 4.3 but I have flashed first the Polish and then the Belgian 4.4s via odin

You can't go back to JB from KK... You may as well have said to connect to Kies and let that fix it...
To the Op, check if your Knox warranty void has been tripped, if it has you may as well root and install a custom rom and/or recovery, or at the very least xposed framework.
You can't reset theKnox but you can use a mod to trick the system into thinking its official which will allow OTA updates. You may need a couple of things to be active so the OTA will install but I'll let you look that up.

Used to read about a bug on samsung phones where if it contains too many files it would show system status as modified. Try transfer as much as your files from phone memory into sdcard then remove it. Then check again system status. It sounds crazy but i'm pretty sure that's my understanding from the thread

Strange, when flashing back to complete stock everything goes back to official (bar knox of course) - did you try the xeo? It's possible if you've used another firmware (carrier or country) the device may not like it.
Also a complete wipe may help too.
