[Q] Nexus 7 or 10????

Hello all
I will be getting a Nexus tablet this Xmas, it will either be 32gb N7 or 16gb N10.
I'm very torn to which I should go for.
I currently have an iPad and I'm happy to be leaving IOS but I'm not sure how I'd 7" display on the N7.
My gut feeling is N7 due to the size but I'm not sure due to the size!!!
I know indecisive but that why I'm asking for your opinions.

Do what i'm doing. Go to Sams club buy yourself a 32 gb nexus 7 use it for up to 90 days, return it and try the nexus 10 same way.
Only you can answer this really it completely depends on tour usage. I don't think it will be superior its just different. They are both nexus and both very high end devicea

Nexus 10 will probably be the "better" tablet but it really depends on what you want. If you want to carry your tablet around everywhere then the Nexus 7 is probably a better choice. If it's going to stay at home most of the time then Nexus 10. If you're going to be watching a lot of movies then Nexus 10 is better. For reading books Nexus 7.

I'm waiting for a truck load of reviews.. One review I read already puts me in the `not buying' category.. I don't trust Samsumg with tablets.. They have a good track record with throwing awesome hardware into a tablet and having it perform like a Celeron trying to run Windows Vista with 512MB of RAM. I already have one 10 inch paperweight of theirs.. I'm not looking for another.

Thanks for the info, I travel quite a lot and take my iPad everywhere, browse and watch TV/films when in hotels.
I'm very tempted with N7 as I've noticed I've been using the iPad less and phone more due to size.

The N7 is a show stopper considering the price.. The N10 has (imo) A LOT to live up to considering it's twice as much as the N7.. For double the price I sure as hell better be getting more than 3inches of screen, 400mhz and Antutu scores that ring in 4000 points lower than my N7 along with other benchmarks that are worse than my N7.. I'm 35 and well beyond buying junk for material reasons and it's looking like the N10 is going to be just that.

While I cannot speak for the Nexus 10, I do own the Nexus 7 and believe the light weight and form factor to be its greatest strengths. I used to own an iPad 3, but sold it after getting the Nexus 7. The iPad always felt a little too big and heavy for use at home. In many instances I simply used my laptop/PC instead. The 7" form factor is perfect for browsing the web, reading eBooks, watching 720p movies, etc. while on the go or moving around the house.
Also, the one concern I would have in regards to the Nexus 10 are the applications themselves. From my experience with the N7, many apps on the Play market are not tablet optimized. There are basically many apps that are essentially made for phones that are blown up to fit the Nexus 7. It does not look too bad on a 7" screen, but I can only imagine phone apps being a complete waste of space on a 10" tablet. I think in time Android will get more tablet specific apps though.

Well you already have a 10 inch tablet so why not add a 7 incher to your stable? The portability and light weight of the nexus 7 really adds to its usefulness and ease of use. Reading a few reviews of the n10 is a good idea though before making your decision.
Not to encourage greed, but if this is going to be a gift then you might want to opt for the more valuable n10.

I would suggest asking this in the Nexus 10 forums too, just to get their point of view. Overall , you're going to get a bias opinion in the Nexus 7 forums and the Nexus 10 forums,just spread it out a bit.
I would suggest the N7 for its price, HD screen and form factor. It handles anything (that's optimised, **** you gameloft) you throw at it and doubles as an eReader and gaming device. The N10 is undoubtedly better for watching moves with its retina crushing 2560 x 1600 resolution screen and browsing the web, however for £130 less the N7 does that just as well. The N7 has served me well for the last 4 months or so, it lasts me a full days usage and I use it heavily as I travel a lot. My usages contains reading, albeit I a small amount, gaming, browsing, music, IRC, Text based games and watching videos. It'll survive about 6 hours screen time with full brightness and wifi.

Thank you all for your advice, I am fairly certain it will be the N7. It will be a gift and also a replacement for the iPad. I look forward to coming back to this forum when start flashing those ROM's.

Hey Guys, I'm considering buying the Nexus 7 and was hoping to get some opinions on it vs the other 7'' tabs out there. Any pros / cons, battery life.. stuff like that. Thanks for any help

Most people here will say yes, seeing as it's the Nexus forum. Read/watch your own reviews and make up your own mind.
I would also say "yes", however. It's a great little device.

I had an iPad 3. I love the size of the Nexus 7. The screen is not as bright and vivid, but I still ended up selling my iPad and keeping the Nexus 7.

I figured I'd get mostly positive opinions, after watching / reading all the reviews I figured I'd try to solicit some good honest user generated feedback. Sometimes you read the reviews and its hard to tell if they have an agenda associated with them. Thanks for the feedback!

I just sold my TouchPad which was running a solid version of CM9 and gave my wife my Nook Color which is running CM10 in favor of my Nexus 7. After a year with a 10" tablet and a couple of years with the Nook Color I determined that the 7" form factor works best for me. I prefer the build quality of the Nook Color over the Nexus but I like the size of the Nexus and of course the updated hardware specifications better than the Nook. I haven't put my Nexus down long enough to establish the battery life under normal conditions (I have only had it for 10 days) but it seems reasonable. The first few nights it drained more than I wanted with the screen off but after turning off sync on various applications, the GPS (when I am not using it), and setting the WIFI to sleep when the screen is off it holds it's charge pretty well. Rating: :good::good:

I came from a 10" touchpad. I rarely even use my laptop anymore. So rarely my girl wants me to sell it. I love my tab...its perfect.

I had my N7 since July and it took me a few days to like the smaller size but now I love it. There is only one App on my Apple that I want that isn't on Android but it is a game and not a big deal.
For $250 you can get 32GB N7 or for $299 32GB w/ cell modem that are all cheaper than any iPad. N7 has a lot of specs better than the new iPad Mini that would cost $559 to match the same features as the $299 N7.

Thank you guys for your input I def appreciate it. I'm by no means fluent at all things android but I do love to have a rooted device. I rooted my S3, is its similar or more difficult to gain root access and would you say there are a decent amount of Roms to choose from?? Thanks again

okay to good as standalone device. GREAT when it's connected to wifi.

It has been more than enough for web browsing compared to using my phone, and for gaming it is great.

you should wait a week or so and get the 3g version.

Please help me decide between Nexus 10 and Galaxy note 8

I am having a lot of trouble deciding between these two devices, particularly because the nexus 10 is not available to try out at any physical store in my area so I'd be going on just online feedback alone. I made myself a little pro/con list. I am hoping that by seeing what I see, maybe someone can help me tip the scales in one direction or the other!
Galaxy note 8 (not considering ipad mini, i like the note better)
Pros
-I am a physician, the size is perfect for carrying around the hospital in my white coat. As a former owner of an ipad 3, carrying that around was annoying.
-Colors look bright
-S-pen. I don't use it a whole lot on my note 2 phone, but i also dont take notes on my phone. I hope to be able to use my tablet for reading pdfs, highlighting and even following along in lectures. This provides that opportunity.
Cons
-Price, very difficult pill to swallow the price for half the resolution and processing power.
-Lack of XDA support (can this tablet even be rooted? Huge concern for me if not), I'm sort of a flashaholic.
-Havent had a chance to watch an HD movie yet.. can someone comment on what I might expect to see quality wise compared to my old ipad 3 and even the nexus 10?

Pros
-Easily the most beautiful display available, I am a techie who wants the best and brightest
-Always updated by google blah blah, stock android
-Amazing developer community
Cons
-Size, I do like that tablet to fit in my whitecoat and not be cumbersome in the hospital all day
-I'd be buying blind, I have never seen a galaxy 10 tablet in person (ive seen the 7 but i know theyre very different)

Personally id go for the Nexus 7. I dont know how big your lab coat is but it can fit into a suit jacket snugly. I dont think you will see a big size difference between a Nexus 10 and a Note 8, and like you mentioned they are charging an arm and a leg for a vastly underequipped device because it is a "Note"

i thought about the nexus 7 but i found that extra inch pretty clutch for doing practice exam questions and viewing imaging. The 8" also would fit perfectly in the pocket (obviously 7" would too)

Nexus 10 On the Way
I recently purchased the $139 refurb deal on the Nexus 7 and while it's a nice tablet I found that the screen size was too small. I already have a Note 2 as my phone and found that the Nexus 7 didn't offer enough to justify using it over my Note 2. I ended up giving it to my kids to use. I next considered the Note 8 and the Nexus 10 just like you. I ultimately decided that I probably wouldn't be happy with the 8" screen size either. The reduced size Android tablets are designed mainly for vertical orientation and so make you feel like you are just using a scaled up phone, which doesn't appeal to me. I also think the Note 8 is over-priced. If Samsung made a Note 10 with a high-res display I would definitely get it, but they don't. I just can't see dropping money on a tablet that uses a 1280 resolution display. So I decided to go for the refurb deal on the Nexus 10 in the 32gb model. Like you I haven't ever seen one but like the idea of the high-res display and the Nexus brand (get updates right from Google). At $429 with free shipping I figure its worth ordering just to try out. I bought the Note 8. I also have / had the Galaxy Tab 10.1, Nexus 7, and iPad 3.
The Note 8 is for people who need to use it to write handwritten notes. None of the other tablets I've used come close to the Note 8 if that is what you need. The size is perfect for note taking. It can take the same amount and size notes on its smaller screen as the iPad can in zoomed mode. However if you do not need the note taking aspect of this tablet, you would be right to think it's over priced. I liked the Nexus 7 size better, it was just more comfortable to hold. The original Samsung 10.1 tablet is slow and the screen is not that great, but it is still my preferred device for videos, mostly because it can display them on the largest screen due to its aspect ratio. The iPad has a beautiful screen which made it a pleasure to use, and I didn't mind its weight at work, but I rarely use it at home because it's too big and heavy. The old 10.1 Android got more use, though now that I have the Note 8 it probably won't be used much any more. My recommendation would be to buy the Nexus 10 for home, and the Note 8 for work if you need it for note taking, but if you don't need the s pen, I would wait a month and see what the next Nexus 7 or 7.7 or 8 will be. It should be announced at Google IO.

my sugestion its that stay out of nexus 10 regarding its multiply issues with build quality until you are not testing the device to the blood before buying.

My opinion is get Nexus 10.We don't know how Note 8 exactly perform but Nexus 10 performs well at the moment.

Go to any tablet on XDA and you will see just as many horror stories people returning their device 6 or 7 times due to some QC problem... Some people are just never happy. There are some legit problems but a lot of what you see is from people who get their jollys off complaining about a product they bought...
The only problem the nexus 10 has that others don't is a software issue... The thermal throttling is WAY too conservative... This can be easily fixed with a custom kernel... And as this guy says he is a flashaholic a custom kernel shouldn't be a problem...
All tablets with LCD screens have light bleed issues... If they has put an Ambled screen on this bad boy it would have raised the cost and people would have complained...
The one thing I wish is that they stuck to a 1080p res screen... There really is no reason to go above that... 1080p looks AMAZING on my 42" lcd(which by the way also has huge light bleed lol) it would look awesome on my nexus 10 especially since they probable could have gone with an AMoled screen at that res for the same price

I can tell you that I love the screen resolution on the Nexus 10. The Note 8 has no comparison when it comes to that department.

I ended up buying both tablets today since I can return either in 15 days. SO far I'm undecided, but I am bummed out that there is no root option for the note 8.
On the flipside.. the nexus 10 is already seeming like a pain in the ass to carry around. Also, whoever designed the note 8 deserves a swift kick in the nuts for making the camera stick out on the back.

I picked uo the Galaxy note 8, 2 days ago. I am using it while on the road for work while at the hotel on the network I am watching the wifi signal strength drop ever time I cover thetop right back side of the tablet with my hand. I mean just the corner of it could any of you guys that have it check. I can post a a video if needed. You can not miss it.
Another issue is the battery life, it just goes too quick. Maybe I am not giving it enough time. If all I am going to get is 5 hours on this battery. I will take this tablet back.

I don't have any wifi issue with mine. I just tried to reproduce it, but I see no change in signal strength or Internet speed regardless of how I hold it. Check at another wifi location to rule out the hotel being the problem instead. Exchange it if it still does it.
I agree the battery could be better. It gets me through a work day, but needs to be plugged in before I'm ready to put it down for the night. The iPad does do much better with battery life. I'm not sure whether my other Android tablets are better though. Possibly, but it hasn't been noticeable to me.

If a Nexus 7 should even be considered you need to at least wait until next month when official specs are released for the new model update that comes out in a few months.

Just because your single device had issues doesn't mean everyone elses does My Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 arrived just fine without any huge glaring issues (only "minor" issue my N7 had was screen lift, which was common during early models; none on the later model I bought).

If my device has problems that means that the quality control its bad . if a single device has problems it could havebeen yours , others and others . It could probably happen to you in the future also .

I want a clean product , like my money are . I need the perfect quality control from google and samsung togheder because i dont pay half money when I do .
Dont worry Ravanous ... nexus 10 has also 5 6 hours of battery. Buy note 8 or wait for ipad mini 2 if you can eat IOS.

I have a Nexus 10 but I have it on ebay at the moment and waiting to replace it with a Note 8 3G (whenever they are available here in the UK!).I love the screen on the N10 but that's about it, I find the size awkward and rarely use it as a result. I see myself getting more use out of Note 8. I always thought that 8" is the sweetspot in terms of size.

There are thousands of Nexus 10 owners on these forums, which we can see from ROM and kernel downloads. Of those, there is at best only 10% of owners who actually post here. Of those 10%, only 2-3% have problems with their tablet. 2-3% of product that has issues is on the upper end of "acceptable" for most companies these days.

Do you still use your nexus 7 while having a New/faster phone?

Hey guys, I am currently deciding of wheater or not I should get me a New phone. For example the HTC one or the LG Optimus g pro.
My question for you guys with a pretty fast and new phone is, do you guys still usw your nexus 7, does it feel more sluggish because you have a fast phone? I am really concerned about that. Thank you guys for sharing your experiences!

To me my phone and my tablet serve 2 different purposes. I have a nexus 4 in addition to my nexus 7 and if I'm not out I almost exclusively use my 7. Why stare at a small screen when you don't have to? It isn't like the 7 is some ancient p.o.s. It is an overall solid device, why buy a tablet if you just default to your phone all the time? It is called a phone for a reason.

Same here. My Galaxy S4 seems smoother and faster but the apps on it tend to be on-the-go type of stuff whereas my Nexus 7 is more for reading and relaxing. I tend to game more on the Nexus 7 too.

I agree with the others, my phone and tablet serve 2 different purposes. I have a Galaxy S3, which I love dearly and which is fast, but when I have my tablet with me, I hook up to my SG3's mobile hotspot and that's about the extent of my phone use. From there on out, I do everything on my nexus 7- browsing, books, movies, games, etc. I DO love my phone when I don't have my tablet, but for entertainment, it doesn't top my tablet. The only downside is if there's no wifi and I don't have my phone, I can't connect on my tablet... but that pretty much never happens. There's always either wifi or my phone's data, so yeah...
I would say the only time I use my phone instead of my tablet (when I've got the choice of either), is when my kids have hijacked my tablet, lol. Then I don't have much choice!

OK so I know I probably came to the wrong thread, but my question is aimed specifically at people who use the nexus 5 and also own a nexus 7. Is the screen that much of a difference? Is it worth being a companion to my pretty big nexus 5 or should I not waste my dinero and buy a mid range tab for a bigger contrast in screen size? I was thinking lg g pad cause of the processor upgrade from the nexus 7, screen size, and storage expansion. but it is early 2014 not sure if I should wait for this years tablets to come out and make a decision.

most people here are using the original nexus 7 from 2012,you can buy one of those for around $90 on craigslist or around 110 on ebay.
i dont have a nexus 5 but i own a droid dna and the nexus 5 has a slightly bigger screen but honestly,a 7 inch tablet is way better for reading or just laying down and watching a movie compared to most phones, even the bigger ones.
if i were you ,id get the newer nexus 7 tho ,its slimmer and has better specs,but the original can be bought cheap and it will still handle pretty much anything as the specs are not too outdated yet,

N7 is awesome. Its the perfect size and imo the best bang for your buck device

I have a Note 2 phone with 5.5 inch screen. The 7 inch screen is so much better then even this monster phone.I also have a note 10.1.. I love the screen size on it.But it does not fit in my purse.
I would say yes its worth it ..But you gotta ask yourself some questions. How much money you are willing to spend. Do you need it NOW. How much storage space do you need. Do you need a network radio in it .
After you come up with the above answers if . question one is you have plenty of money and question 2 is you DO NOT have to have it this day. Wait and get the next greatest thing. a

They're exactly the same interface and software wise, except some apps are displayed in tablet mode, which is usually better but sometimes worse. Another difference is also that in landscape, the virtual buttons are portrait on the right on Nexus 5 and on Nexus 7 they are landscape on the bottom, wasting precious screen height. These virtual buttons are the only thing I hate about the Nexus 7, after removing them with apps in the Store, you gain a lot of screen space. However, Nexus 5 is 16:9, while Nexus 7 is 16:10, so the visible screen is more or less the same in the end.
I mostly use it in portrait mode because of that.
As I said, that is the only thing that bugs me about it. Otherwise, it's a great little tablet, great size for watching movies, series on the go (or in bed), it should play all games available in the Store and do all other unproductive things you can do on a tablet.
I had a 2011 Xperia Arc S before, and with it's single core CPU it quickly failed to play latest games, that's why I resorted to the Nexus 7.
Nexus 5, however, is newer, has the latest hardware and is capable of playing anything you throw at it, so getting a Nexus 7 is really only for extra screen size, but it does pay off. Maybe diagonal isn't the best measure, try screen area:
Nexus 5: 69 cm^2
Nexus 7: 142 cm^2
So the screen is actually double the size of the Nexus 5, and it's noticeably bigger when watching videos.
If you're going to mostly use it to watch videos, get the N7, if you're primarily going to surf the internet and read documents and such, I'd recommend you to check out the 8" tablets LG Pad 8.3 and Samsung 8" (tab or note), both come with buttons on the side and therefore have more vertical pixels (both 16:10).
Then there's also 2013 Nexus 7, with latest chip and 16:10 fullHD but it's quite pricier then its 2012 brother.
Why would you need a tablet for anyway? If you want it because it's popular, then forget about it. If you have other reasons, write them down, it's easier to recommend that way.

I would highly recommend the original Nexus 7 (as long as you don't need HDMI out) ts still a great tablet and works well and you can get it for a great price. I would highly recommend you DON'T get the 2013 it has known defects with the screen (do some research).

It works great for me, it is highly customizable, gets latest android,price is great for the 2012 model.

I own both, Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 (2012). Have to say that N5 screen is awesome, but still N7 screen is nice and totally usable and it's so cheap, that you can later easily change to some other device if you want.
One good thing is that, the Nexus 7 is still supported by Google so you get official updates at least some time. When Google drop support, then you can always use custom roms.
Personally I buy only Nexus devices, because they get always best support from Google and maybe best community support.

I don't play much games, but on normal usage stock 4.4.2 is working smoothly without any noticeable lag. And yes, you can't compare speed to N5, but old N7 is not bad at all if we compare example to N4.
Do you have some free example game(s) what you mean? I can test and let you know is it working smoothly or not... Maybe this info is useful to @BNNEBULA too.
