NFC Apps? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am relatively new to the whole NFC thing. But since i just got my S4 i am keen to use it with my credit cards.
I tried to download GOOGLE WALLET, however, it says on the android market place it isn't available in my country. So i am looking for good solid secure alternatives that people can recommend?
Any help is much appreciated.
Cheers

Me also in the same boat as this is my first phone with NFC would request one of the expert to post an article on NFC

Depending on your country though... In mine, you can sign up for a nfc simcard with your nfc device with your telco and use it with supported banks. There's local apps for that in my country
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Xparent Skyblue Tapatalk 2

Theres plenty of ATM machines around my area (even though i live in a non-major city) that use PayWise (Visa)... yet Google Wallet still doesnt support Australia.... I am sure this isnt just an Australian issue, im sure there are plenty of countries with the exact same issue.
Are there any other good secure and trusted NFC applications out there? I mean Google Wallet cant be the only one right???

UK Nexus

Hi quick question,
I just managed to sell my htc hd2 for £390 so am about to order my nexus one! (im in the UK) other UK buyers can you tell me how much its all coming to roughly, i understand its about £340 on the credit card from google then probably about another £60 from DHL once they invoice you?
Also I heard that if we're importing a nexus to uk rather than waiting another month or so to get uk version sim free (i guess from google.co.uk?) that the updates/rom etc will be the US versions and we may not get certain benefits/updates/default functionality etc that a UK/european bought nexus will get - what these are I don't know thou!anyone know?
What i was mainly concerned with was that I did hear this may effect gps/maps and sat nav for uk users and that we may not be able to use turn by turn in uk? This may not be true, its just something i remmber reading on another forum?
any thoughts would be appreciated
cheers
Well I believe the UK Nexus will have multi-touch.
I have my Nexus already running Google Nav as it works as per the old method for Hero/Dream.
It depends if you're planning on rooting it or not, if you are then you'll be putting a custom ROM on anyway, which will probably have multi-touch..etc (Cyan is already working on it).
Also the UK will more than likely have a T-mobile brading...etc.
Your Choice.
I have had my DHL bill as yet but it was a tad shy of £355 I think (depends on the exchange rate at the time).
yeah i think by all sounds rooting seems to be the way to go once peeps have had time to iron it out. havent had android phone before but like all i hear, i had the htc hd2 for about 4 hours before i was convinced winmo was a pile of ****! i think i may take the plunge and go for it -my GF keeps saying why dont i just get an Iphone! i think i need this phone to show her why!
If the euro Nexus does have multitouch there's nothing to stop Google updating those US phones sold to UK users - the hardware will be identical.
How do I test multi touch as I thought Eclair supports it out the box? I tried multi touch paint from market and it seems to work fine.
Use Dolphin Browser, this supports multitouch.
We KNOW the phones support it, its just Google couldn't release to US handsets for some reason to do with Apple and copyright??? not entirely sure.
The UK Nexus One ordered from google.com/phone (currently the only place to order the device) does not have multi touch support in the preinstalled apps. The device itself has support, the built in apps do not (ie the built in Gallery app does not zoom when you pinch) That's why installing multitouch supported apps from the Market work.
You will need to install a custom version of Maps for Google Maps Navigation to work outside the US. Keep in mind there are some limitations. Search for the thread in the Dream Android Development forum to read how to install and what the limitations are.

Exactly what I thought. I prefer the double tap
There is, afaik, no "UK Nexus" and "US Nexus".
They're the same.
If the preinstalled apps in the version sold to US citizens don't have multitouch, the ones sold to Brits won't either.
Same hardware and software, only if you're having it sent to UK, you get the option of getting an adapter for you charger separately.
It's explained on the official support page, which I'm not allowed to link to.
Be very careful about importing any phone into different regions. All kinds of problems can result, including NOT GETTING 3G COVERAGE! If things don't work for you, can you return the phone without trouble? That's a lot of money to spend on a phone that has problems!

The Neuxs One is a phone made for the whole world, so importing it will not result in problems with coverage as it supports the mostly used 3g bands around the world.
Also noone is importing the Nexus One to the UK since Google is specifically targetting UK residents and must of course provide customer service to them.
As for other countries which google is not really selling the phone to I don't know, but I assume that the warranty is world wide and you should not have trouble returning it.

It does obvious detect the network of the sim inserted, time and location of where you are automatically. Therefore updating the system and apps accordingly.

Really? How did it update these apps exactly? I had no 3g/edge/gprs or wifi when I set up. Are you suggesting that OTB there are multiple app versions? Are you saying that if you happend to be in the US and used a UK sim you'd get UK apps? I doubt that very very much, particularly as a SIM is not even required to setup.
SC
Let me break it down for you.
The phone has a inbuilt GPS. When you turn your phone on the very first time regardless of your sim being inserted or not. The phone will set itself up accordingly to where you are. During the first start up the phone takes longer if you didnt notice.

LOL I seriously doubt that happens either. If it did it would have taken a week for mine to start up. I work in what is essentially a giant Faraday cage. I just can't get a GPS signal inside.
So rather than you just making stuff up, can we stick to the facts?

ok you should stick to your idea of google having 4 boxes of nexus ones. they have one for US, UK, Singapore and HK.
They shipped you a UK one since your navigation doesnt work and it had amazon UK installed

I take it there's still no confirmation as to whether it will be available sim-free from an EU webstore when it is offered on Vodafone? In fact, unless things change, when it is subsidised by VF, it may be a case of signing up to a vodafone contract on google.com and still importing the handset. If there is some sort of google.co.uk offering, then presumably the price will reflect the VAT element.
i got one from ebay 470 free shipping..
Works fine so far, how do i get the maps working? whats the old hero method? Ive never had an hero lol

Google Play store -Nexus purchase

I'll keep this really short
https://play.google.com/store/devices/details/Nexus_7_8GB?id=nexus_7_8gb&hl=en
Im from India and clicking on the above link gives the error
"Sorry! Devices on Google Play is not available in your country yet.
We're working to bring devices to more countries as quickly as possible.
Please check back again soon."
As expected since im from India
The Nexus 4 has launched and will bew going on sale for $350 for the Unlocked 16GB version of the phone
What i intend on doing is order the phone off the Play Store for my Dad who is based in US so that he can then ship it to India
He is always busy at work so is there any work around on how i can make that link useable in India to the order it
Proxy maybe ?
Oh and payment for Device can be done without a Paypal ? As my dad should have a Credit card
Thanks for the help
I was thinking of using a Proxy, but is it safe for shopping ??
Oh and can someone please explain to me the means to order it, Credit card/google wallet/ payapal ?
I wouldn't order some anything with a credit card over a proxy, they're insecure.
Sorry, there really is no other way. Until and unless Google opens up the Play store and sells the Nexus in India, you cannot go through the checkout process from India. The billing and shipping address are required to be the same, in which case it needs to be based in the US.
Damn :/
Thing is i only need to do the browsing
AS iwill be using my dads credit card or any other means of payment
All i need to know is payment options
Thanks
Just have your dad set up teamviewer and send you his passcode ( 1 minute of less ).
Then when he is away from the pc for more than 5 minutes you can browse google play website and order using your dad pc through your pc with the help of teamviewer.
Ohk so you want your dad to send it to you.
What you can do is give him this link http://www.google.com/nexus/4/
and tell him to press "SHOP NOW"
hope that solved your problem
ill do the team view thing
Will a VISA Credit/ Debit card work ? Or do i need google wallet ?
Credit card must work.
Your are going to use a USA card.
The card's location of issue must be the same as the addressing location. Not sure how exactly it works or if there are any work arounds.
Use Google.com
The specs are amazing and i just love Android.Unfortunately for reasons unknown Google is not so keen on launching their Nexus phones in India . It was true for the Galaxy Nexus and i don't think that Google has any plans of launching this one in India. My brother who stays in US will be coming home for Christmas and i will ask him to get the 16 GB version which will cost just 18,500 INR (approx)...... that's almost the price i had paid to get my Motorola Defy a year ago .Are there any limitations of using this phone in India...i read somewhere that the phone will have a built in battery ? is that true ? If yes....is it possible to change the battery if i have any issues with the existing one or once the stock battery dies out.
Regardless of area availability, you linked to a discontinued product . They aren't selling the 8GB version anywhere anymore

You are totally wrong. LG has an official statement released that they will be very much launching a NX4 in India. Heck even Google said it is coming to 200 countries. So no way they have missed India.
I too am from India and am desperately waiting for it to show up on the Play Store.
It will only be available from Google in the US, UK, Canada, Germany, France, Spain and Australia.
All other places will have to buy it through local retailers/phone providers, where it will probably be significantly more expensive.

UK Tap-To-Pay?

So, aside from the hacked version of Google Wallet that we can't easily top-up, has anyone managed to get any NFC payment systems working on their Nexus 4 in the UK? There seems to be a few around but it's all a bit.... confusing to say the least.
Anybody got anything?
The only one I have working is orange quick tap which is actually a barclaycard app on my galaxy S3 allows NFC payments been using it for a while now , tried to install the apk onto my N4 but its not supported yet .
Sent from either Nexus 4 or SGS3 using XDA premium.
NFC payments UK
So is there anyway I can take advantage of the NFC in my lovely N4 to pay for stuff in the UK? It'd be a real shame if not.

Travelling with Nexus 10, accessing US Play Store?

I can't seem to find an answer for this in Google. Was wondering if anyone could help me figure it out.
My mother wants to buy a Nexus 10. She lives in Luxembourg, but spends about 2 months every year visiting us in the US. (She is here now, preparing to buy tablet). She wants to access the US Play Store, both here and at home in Lux. Is this possible? What would we need to do it set it up that way? Is using a US credit card enough or are we going to need some kind of Market Enabler app? VPN/Proxy?
Thanks!

You would be able to access the playstore from most countries. The country would remain the one to which your google account is linked and I guess so will the currency.
For example, google movies weren't available where I live around till a month ago. They wouldn't show up on my play store earlier. However, they would show up on my sister's playstore when she visited from London. In simple terms, she was accessing Playstore UK from New Delhi, India.
In answer to the question about the US playstore regarding your mum's tab, I guess you will have to buy a tablet preferably with a US credit card (though this might be overlooked) and definately register it to a US based gmail account. Be sure to register a credit card on the playstore and google account which works in the US.

I'm afraid the above answer may be wrong; it certainly is for Google Play Books. I live in the US, have an Android tablet (Asus TF101 running a Jellybean ROM, tested and working fine with Google Play and with numerous purchases in the US), and it was activated and regularly used for well over a year in the US. My Google account to which it is linked has been used regularly in the US for quite a few years. And to top it all off, the account is linked to a credit card issued in the US, by a US credit union.
Despite all of the above, when I went to purchase a book while travelling overseas on a two week vacation recently, the purchase was denied on the grounds that I was not in the US. It may work briefly, I don't know; I'd been overseas for maybe 9-10 days when I tried the purchase.
However, it was utter childs' play to circumvent this. All I had to do was buy VPN access (it so happens I already had it), go in through the VPN to get a US IP address, and hey presto... The Play store let me make the very same book purchase it had just refused me.
So yes, a VPN is the answer. I used WiTopia, which is US$50 annually or US$6 per month.

This thread might make clearer which credit card to use. You can read the credit card related part.
As for the reply by the person above me, as he has tried purchasing from google playstore while travelling he might have a better idea about that, though I am sure US playstore, movies, music, books etc would be available to you abroad as UK playstore is for my sister. As per what he says, buying from them might be a problem.

[Q] Tap N Pay in Europe

how u mean only one? In every store u have PayPass, thats mean u can use Tap N Pay in every story, If ppl in USA can use it, we can use it too in EU.
if you don't know, europe is 10 years behind usa...
I dont think so ?
Sent from my SM-N900T using XDA Free mobile app
I wish I could say it wasn't , but technologically the EU is years behind the USA.
NFC payment is supported by banks, for instance. I've got an NFC chip in my bank card and it's been activated. I can use it wherever I wish.
But the shops? They're still using the phone lines for their pin machines.
The same pin machines they used 18 years ago, which don't support contactfree payment, let alone online payment.
And the NFC system is quite a bit older in the USA than Google Wallet.
There's no point introducing online payments if the shops thenselves won't and can't accept it.
Hell, most places don't even properly have 4G yet.
And as Larry Page has said; Until the EU starts moving forward technologically, Google Pay is not coming to the EU.
Google isn't the problem here. It's the government, and in particular the shop owners.
Many of which don't even have an internet connection in the shop. Little hard to recieve online transactions that way.
So you want Google Wallet, stick a boot up your government's arse to get them to invest in technology. Until they do, it's not happening.
That's what we get for having atechnical, primitive primates as our countries' leaders.
