Explorer crashes when transfering 1gb+ to SD - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

"Windows explorer has stopped working" it says whenever i try to transfer a large video file from my PC to my SG4 via USB. Tried
- two cables
- two different USB ports
- different files all sizes 1.3-1.8 gb
- card in adapter directly. It works with the adapter. So how do I make it work with the cable? I've transfered plenty of small video files ~100mb without any problems.
Thoughts?

Hmm the fourth thread I read about this says
This is happening to me too, whatever size the mkv file is. What i do is, rename the mkv extension to mo or any ma, then copy paste to sd card, rename it in root explorer back to mkv.

How to transfer/watch movies on HTC Touch HD

How do you transfer a movie to the Touch HD and get it to play?
I've got an .avi movie.
1h 32m
647MB
720 x 576
192 kbps
I've tried Syncing it using Windows Media 10.
Only about 5kbs transfers to the phone!?
I've tried copy & pasting via USB but nothing seems to happen.
Looks like it's transfering but taking an age and the progress bar doesn't move!!!
Is the file too big? Does the file have to be converted to another format?
Smaller .avi files play.
Any help here please?!
What playback software are you using?
Hi
When you connect your phone you usually have an option to do only a file transfer and not a sync.
I suggest you select that , then copy and paste your movie file to your microSD card.
I suppose its slow because the phone is syncing and transfering the file at the same time.
Hope This Helps

YUP agreed. All you do is select data transfer after connecting your phone via USB to your computer. Then go to my computer go to mobile device go to storage card then either drag and drop or copy and paste.
You can use a CardReader: in my opinion it is better solution if you must move big files.

Big Thanks to everyone! It was doing my head in!!!
Waiting for your help, I continued to play around with the Touch HD.
Seems that when you connect the HTC Touch HD to the PC via USB, there's an option to choose between...
ActiveSync
Disk Drive
Internet Sharing.
When I tried to look at Mobile Device in My Computer (on the PC), I thought I'd somehow wiped the storage card . Looking again, I'd somehow chosen the Disk Drive option, and then in My Computer, another drive - Removable Disc (L) appeared holding my Touch HD storage card data.
I copy & pasted the movie (.avi) files from my PC hd to the (L) drive and the files transfered in the usual way.
Thanks again to all who took time out to advise. Hope my little guide can also help folk in a similar position!

Difficulty transferring video files

Is anyone having difficulty getting certain types of files to transfer? Sometimes it'll stop transferring and I'll have to close explorer.exe. I tried using winamp to sync but I get an error message saying the files are incompatible, even though RockPlayer will work.
Need more info to help you out. What OS and version are you using. What type of video are you trying to transfer (size and format). Are you using the stock USB cable and are you using the USB on the front or back of you computer?

Win 7 ultimate. .mkv files which will play with RockPlayer, about 400mb each. I have to transfer them one at a time it looks like. Dragging the entire folder over freezes the copy process. Im using the stock cable which is inserted in a USB port in the back of my computer.
It might be the fact that the Xoom is recognized as a portable device and not an external drive. When copying over a folder does that warning message say it may not play on the device pop up?

How to take advantage of microsd slot?

How do I use it besides from roms and such? I can't play music, video or emulator roms off of it.
Not sure what you mean, all my music and videos are stored on my 32gb microsd, and I have no problem playing them without transfering them to the main memory.
When I add new music to it, the stock music player picks up the new tracks automatically, and mobo, which I use for video allows you to set the default directory to search for files it can use. Just select the file icon from the main menu and press the back soft key until you see the external sd listed.

I'm gonna have to recheck because it couldn't find anything on my sdcard before. Thanks.
should be pretty simple
Your external SD is located at /mnt/external_SD - i either use a external microsd reader or ES file explorer to copy files to my MicroSD - after copy you may need to reboot your a500 to have apps pick up on the files. I use a free great app called "SDRescan" - free from the market, no supported ads or anything like that - it will force a rescan of your media without the need to reboot.
Hope this helps - i keep my music and my camera/video recorder files on external SD and have no problems accessing them from any app I use.
Problems solved. The app I was using wouldn't allow it to scan anything besides sdcard instead of ext_sd (or whatever it is).
Is there any way to cut and paste (in ES File Explorer) between the two? It fails every time I try.
Using es file explorer
Cut/paste to the microSD card fails every time.
Work around - copy/paste - then delete files from the source after confirming copy was successful. Works fine for me

+1 for SDRescan. It took a couple of attempts before my media showed in the music player though. Kinda annoying, but bearable
Glad i could help
SDRescan is a must have tool for me - much faster to run it and force rescan then wait for a full system reboot. I usually find waiting for 10~ seconds after running/closing it works like a charm.

Problem with movies being too big to transfer SOLVED!!

If the Movies is too big to transfer just use (HJsplit 3.0) and split the movie in half and then transfer it over to the tab, use wifi explorer pro to transfer it works flawless
they are never too big with adb push

Is that so? Even when pushing to /sdcard?

Unlike phone-derived Android, /sdcard on our devices isn't really an SD card. It's actually the exact same partition as /data.
It's just symlinked so that apps which expect /sdcard don't break.
As it's an ext4 partition, it doesn't have the 4GB file size limit of FAT.
This, by the way, is why our tabs don't support USB Mass Storage but instead implement MTP. USB Mass Storage exports the raw block device, MTP operates on files. This allows it to be used when other apps are also using /sdcard, and allows the ext4-ness of /sdcard to get hidden. The disadvantage is that it's far less standardized than USB Mass Storage. MTP seems flaky on our devices, but ADB (Android USB debugging) is nice and solid.

Once you have the movie on your Tab (in a million or so pieces) how do you play it? I have done what you said but I can't get it to play in order -- just plays one file and quits...Please help
just transcode it with handbrake or dvd catalyst - problem solved! entire movie at manageable file size with excellent quality

Just chose the next file i haven't managed to get them to play in order, working on it.
MKV solves ALL of these problems.
Download mkvtoolnix for your OS
This toolset allows you to do the following very easily:
Add any video/audio source to MKV container without compression
Split MKV into any size chunks
MKV split into chunks can be "linked" and if the player fully supports it, it will automagically find the next chunk to be played. I dont think diceplayer supports the link functionality of mkv. Boo hoo you need to pick the other chunk to play when one runs out. Not a deal breaker.

Thanks -- I originally didn't see that you could set the files to a 3GB file and I was just using the default of 1048k.....Now it is only in 3 files instead of a million!!

Putting movies onto SDcard?

Hi guys,
I have a 32GB SD card which is formatted in the TN7. I can remove it and put it in my Mac and copy some movies (under 2GB each) onto it, but I keep getting an issue where I can move over about 2 or 3 movies, but after that it doesn't want to know!
Sometimes they are on the card but when inserted into the TN7 and trying to play the movie it doesn't work!
I have tried both ways of using the Android transfer program as well as removing the SD card from the tablet and putting it in my Mac but still get the same problem.
I don't want to put them all on the TN7 as it will take up alot of memory, cant transfer them to the card in either with the SD card issue.
Running all latest software.
Any other way to try it?
Cheers

Hmm, interesting issue. Can't say I know the solution but what I would try next would be to see if the problem duplicates when using a different PC, maybe a windows machine for greater difference. I've personally moved 6 movies in one go and had them all appear and play on my TN7.

I tried to do the transfer in Windows (under VMware) but when I copy the file over I get a message saying that I might not be able to view the file if I copy it over?! Some files work and others say they cannot be played.

MKV and MP4 files
Got a new 64gb card today and still get the same problem, transferring movies to it lets say 6 of them. 2 will work fine and other ones will fail to play.
What memory cards are you guys using?
Ok so messing around I put the movies I wanted on the tablets storage, then I got ES file manager and tried to copy them on to the 64GB micro sdcard, but when you go play the file it says movie cannot be played! I copied 7 over and only 4 play. Weird thing is they all play fine from the tablets own storage but copying them to the sdcard has some issue somewhere.
Hello. If you are plaing on built in player try mx player on sw settings.Im using mx player on 64gb sandisk mobile ultra without problems.
thanks, tried that already but the problem is copying the movies from internal memory to sdcard, they always 60% fail the other 40% work!
Thought I would just try this FakeFlashTest..
64GB
image hosting over 10mb
32GB
image ru
I can return the 64GB one for a refund
Try Hd Tune pro and check for errors in sd card.
