What is Daydream function? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

There are many useless app on the S4 and this is one of them that I don't get the functionality or usage of it. What is it good for anyway?

dont know what its good for its pretty much just a screen saver for when phone is in a dock or is charging
i rather have the screen off when charging

This is a stock Android feature so its not a gimmick Lol. I use it to show my clock when its docked on the wireless charger. The only problem is that Samsung for some stupid reason took out the clock daydream... Can't wait until I get CM 10.1

Because there are so many people saying airgestures are gimmicks and a lot of other features but they all work and most are useful. More useful than daydream

Yes I argee most of these S4 gimmicks are very understated. But I also find daydream useful and I miss it a lot (now I have to buy a alarm clock for the time being)...

You can say that again ... more is right
hell, at least there's a glimpse of hope
i'm patient enough to see it fully implemented on my tab ^^
Oh wow that's amazing! Lets hope we get some more info on this!
Edit...
This video is probably fake. It could just be a movie, kinda like what Motorola was doing at CES. If you look closely it doesn't even look like his finger touches the screen which could mean the movie is playing and if he touches the screen the on screen controls would come up....hmmmm.
From the Tab.

LOL, that would explain why the vid is only 5 sec ^^
somehow if people managed to make honeycomb works on their tab,i'd bet they brag about it on a couple minute video just for the hell of it
Im fairly sure if it was real it would we would all know about it because some xda pro would of made it happen
those hardware heys dont even look like galaxy tab
Fake for sure! Theres a bounty on here of over $1000 so am pretty sure if someone had done it for real they would b on here shouting an bragging.

Fake. It's the demovideo running fullscreen.
Looks fake, notice the buttons on the lower left ? although it might be the galaxy tab2..
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
I dont think they are hardware buttons, but buttons on a lower status bar, isnt honey comb meant to have on screen buttons
yes, its not a button
honeycomb have that on screen button
the one that bugs me is that kinda flying finger thats not touching at all like earlier post
it is samsung galaxy tab indeed, not galaxy tab 2 or anything
since its a video running full screen, thats why he's not touching it
lol, it's the video from youtube.com/android, it's a fake
I have done the exactly the same on my Tab just to see how it would look like, all the buttons and that stuff.
also, look at the Icon arrangement , it's exactly the same from the video, even the Appointment and the mails and also the ninja fruit kaka icon is on the same place

Newly designed? What you think they threw away tge million 1.0 chips, made all the scientists work over time last weekend and cranked up the chip presses to "superfast" to make tge 1 May deadline? LOL the clock speed is just a setting... All they have to do is flash new firmware...

LoL, and more so the entire purpose was to have specifications which can last throughout the year and compete with the HTC Sensation or any other HTC device released this year.

I read "newly designed" as "hasn't been in any previous device. Not that it is a chip completely different to the chips in the protoypes.

How do you run the stock android browser in full screen? Please do tell.
Thanks
You can't. In the settings of the GS it was disabled so you don't have access to that option so I bet it will be the same way for that beasty smartphone. Really not that much of a deal... and the top bar is always useful for the time and radio toggle and battery status etc
The screen is so huge that you will not need to have a true full screen experience. It will be more comfortable to have the Top bar or the Bottom Bar available while providing you a larger view of the website.

There's at least half a dozen 3rd party free browsers that are far more customisable. I personally use Dolphin HD because it allows me to configure everything I need.

Do you use all the features?

I'm planning on getting the htc one but some of these features seem really cool on the s4, so my question is do you use them all or are they just a bunch of gimmicks.

Really the only one that has impressed me is the eraser mode on the camera that removes moving objects... otherwise, all the "smart" features stay off. Battery hogs to the max.

Unless you use the "smart" features you don't know that for a fact. I have been using the smart features on and off for over a week, with the features / gimmicks on and running there isn't much battery drain at all.
While a lot of the features are gimmicks some are actually very useful.
Smart stay - (the best one out of all them, should be in stock Android)
Quick glance - (use this all time while it's on my desk or on a table)
Air view - (helps me dig through text messages fast and zoom in on some websites)
Air gesture - (I actually go in the gallery a lot and this makes browsing photos more fun and... natural? in a sense)
Palm motion - (use this all the time to answer phone calls and mute or pause music also use it to capture screenshots
Direct call - (I have to admit it's nice and very useful to just directly call someone while simply just moving the phone to your head while in the texting or contacts app)

I used Air View for a bit but it made my screen too sensitive which i used those specific programs.
besides that the only Air feature that i might turn on is Air Call Accept. And it only works during phone calls so its not bad.
The watchon TV controller thing is a bit weird. Doesnt work all the time..
Today I was eating lunch with my phone next to me. Got a call and used the gesture to answer and have the speaker turn on without me touching the phone. That was nice. Voice control camera is cool, but saying different things changes how the camera shoots. I'm still figuring that one out.
Thanks for the replies, none of these sounds useful to me.

Alright, i apologize for the snap judgement. Im fanatical about battery, and they do drain extra, which to me is unacceptable for what you get in exchange. Was much more impressed with the smart stay than any of the new ones, and depending on how many times you let the screen almost time out it can add a fairly substantial amount.
Your right, i should probably rephrase my 'hog' assessment, im probably more picky than others about battery. .

Is there any way to get Samsung's gimmicky features on the Nexus 4?

Features like the air view, and the flip to silence or any of that.
I don't want it, but a friend of mine needs it. Also, preferably, without reducing the smoothness of vanilla.
For stock w/o root if possible but will root if needs be.
Are there apps that do this or does he have to flash something or what?
Look at Locale or Tasker in the Play Store for flip to silence. Air View will only be found in TW.

Yep. I've tried using the S-Pen on my phones and they never work. So air view would probably not work. It would probably need extensive hardware and software modding to get it to work.
Isn't air view basically just a combination of your front camera and proximity sensors?
What about the eye scrolling thing?
Or the thing where when you look away from the phone the video pauses?

All those things are a TW feature/Gimmic only. They will never work on AOSP based roms. Even the GE version of the S4 doesnt have those things.

apparently not, no wakelock needed
I had an LG G3 before my S5 which also has the knock knock code. Didn't cause any battery drain.
It's no where near as stable as it is on the LG G2/LG G3. At least not for me.
Android L includes double tap to wake feature, so let's hope Samsung doesn't delete it in their update.
I am using air unlock since 3 months and found it quite good. No big battery drain and does not unlock in your pocket. Remember, in order to use air unlock, the phone have to be immobilized.
