My nexus 4 has dissapointing battery life, can someone please tell me any tips to increase the battery life? Obviously, lower the brightness, dont have too many apps running, try not to browse on chrome for too long, etc etc. Does anyone use any of the battery saving apps out there? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks. Also, I dont understand why there are no mods/cases with an extended battery. Obviously the battery is not easily removed but I'd be fine with a thicker nexus4 if I could double my battery life.
root it and run custom ROMs and kernels, undervolt it and whatnot.
You can just buy a portable battery pack you know.. They aren't exactly expensive and serve the sane purpose as an extended battery case.
When people say that such device has got a disappointing battery life.. I wonder what it means. If a battery offers a sot of 8hrs..would this thing satisfy all?
I've used S3 which people say has got great battery life.. I got more or less the same battery life in s3 as i get from nexus 4...
Anyways..trying custom kernel and undervolting.it could give you better results..

Agreed. I have friends with s3s, one x and iphone5, and I honestly do not think the battery is bad at all. I'm pretty sure the battery lasts longer for me than for them. And I'm not one for "disabling features" either.
I'm running wifi/data both on and I never manually disable anything. My GPS is on 24/7, and I have all tracking options enabled (for google now). Using auto-brightness though. Still get 4h SOT and I stay 30+h normally without a charge. I do not game alot on my phone though!
I recently re-flashed google stock images (4.2.2) and franco's kernel. Also undervolted but if I dont get any "better" (in terms of heat) results I will definatly remove the undervolting.

This what you doing is putting up one heavy burden on the battery.Never disabling wifi/data & GPS on 24/7..Still getting 4Hrs sot out of 30hrs total battery life .If this is not great than i wonder what great would be..There is only Razor max which is gonna satisfy in terms of battery
PS->If you game a lot on Nexus 4,then the battery wont last longer
Guys u can try deep sleep battery saver app aka ds battery saver.....it puts your phone into deep sleep as soon as screen goes off.........getting 10+ hrs on single charge.......mhav a try

Have you tried Battery Guru? Developed by Qualcomm specifically for the Snapdragon S4 to improve battery life
You can try greenify, I believe the concept of this app is great and overnight on WiFi and the rest left on I loose only 2-3 percent. And wakelocks are pretty much gone.

i don't care about gpu or overclocking my device.. all i want is to unplugged the n4 form charger and go working in the morning and at night before bad to put it back in the charger - without it dieing on my before..
i had htc sensation and it last all day for me, i'm now 2 days with the nexus 4 , and after 12 hours the battery is dead.
i'm currently using Cyanogenmod 10.1 18/2/13 nightly . turn off locations, and Facebook sync. using only automatic brightness (witch my the way is very low), WiFi and gps and Bluetooth always off . 3g on.
thank you!
Usage varies across any ROM/kernel combo. No one can really say what's best, because everyone's usage varies. But, I can and will say, I'm having best battery life so far using asylum nightlies with matr1x 7.0 kernel. I have a very strict setup which I'm not getting into, but I am in no way limiting the function of this powerhouse. If that makes any sense. Currently sitting at 63% with almost 3 hours screen time. 50/50 3g/wifi and heavy use. think streaming, gaming, downloads. It would take me a very long time to describe what I do to get this battery life, but I would be willing to explain if needed.

I recommend AOKP build mr3, and Harsh's kernel. No need to tweak anything, everything is done for you and you get great battery life. Just my experience from it.

I'm using paranoidandriod with Franco kernel. I get great battery life all the time every time. Download the kernel and leave the settings as is and let it do it's thing.
Note: This has been asked too many times. You can search up the old ones and you'll pretty much get the same answers that it all depends on what you do. Battery life is subjective. It depends on the user. If someone only uses their phone for calls and text they will get awesome battery life. If another person has the same setup as the first they did play lots of game and play videos and such, battery life would not be so great. Thus, both users will tell you different answers.
Just try them out and see for yourself.

I'm just wondering because the biggest complaint with 10, 10.1 and now 10.2 seems to have been battery life. In fact that tends to be the case for almost all of the custom ROMs with few exceptions. (uXylon has great battery life for a non-stock custom ROM, for instance).
So what likelihood is there to expect very much improved battery life on CM 10.2? Any thoughts?
BTW - this isn't a gripe on the devs' work, I really want to know what is reasonable to expect.

battery life is what you make of it - power users are going to need to a recharge during the day while casual users should be able to get through the day just fine.
in my experience, for the most part, battery life has been fairly consistent. I can go a full day (6am-11pm) on a single charge so long as I keep my on-screen time under 3 hours. this is very acceptable to me. there is no need for me to go 24 hours given that I sleep for at least 7 of them (thus, I'll charge it then)
Yeah, that's how I have seen it as well. It's all relative to how you use your phone and what your expectations are. But you know we constantly see post from guys who aren't content with battery life no matter what it is. That's why I was looking for some feedback on what is usual, customary and reasonable.

I think this is a great question to ask. While some are content with battery life, others are not. For example, there is no way I could continue to use Liquid rom and expect any sort of reasonable battery life with how I use my phone. As much as I loved the rom itself, it simply wouldn't last long enough between charges. With AOKP I normally charge my phone in the evening (then unplug it.. Never leaving it charged overnight), and once in the afternoon and I'm good. I'm on it constantly and one charge a day with my normal usage never did it for me.. Even on stock. For some reason some roms just seem to handle battery life far better than others no matter what I am doing on my end to conserve battery power (Screen brightness, Greenify, etc). Over the weekend I was able to get 19 hours out of it with far less usage than normally since we were out enjoying the day at a winery. To me, the battery life I get with AOKP seems better or equal to what it was before unlocking the bootloader.

as a power user im on my phone CONSTANTLY playing games and tethering and whatnot. i have to say i have found CM 10.1 roms to be quite generous on battery so far. i throw my CPU up to 1500 min/max when i plan to play COD: BOZ or Dead Trigger and ill get quite a few hours out of it off the charger before i get warned about it dying.
AOKP and Slim based ROMs have had pretty good battery life for me. When I was running CM10, it was nearly identical to stock battery life, but CM10 is 4.1.2 based. If an OEM 4.2.2 based ROM is released, they'll be able to sync it against 4.2.2 AOSP and make things work well (atleast, that's how I picture it in my head). With that being said, I am running Illusion, with Arrghh's kernel and XBreeder, and I'm sitting at about 12% battery, 36 hrs of up time, and 2.5hrs of screen on time. This is about as good as what I would see when I was running tweaked stock.
Battery life is also dependent on how long you've had your current OS running (in my experience, anyway). A lot of us around here are crackflashers and we never let a ROM settle in. I was getting average battery use on Ilusion, but it's gotten better in the last few days.
I got a new battery off amazon and been getting great battery life again. I think i borked my old one.
AOKP almost always lasts me through the day unless I go over 3 hours of screen time

Hello I just got this phone the Friday before Christmas and I've heard and read this phone has great battery life. But that's not what I'm seeing. I'm getting like 8 hours with moderate use on a single charge. Here are some battery usage information screen shots. She my question is this a defective unit?/should I exchange it? I'm rooted with the volume boost mod too.

Thats some pretty high temps you would see on gaming use. Something in system ui ect is demolishing your phone. Use WLD or BBS to find out what is keeping the system awake and using that much resource. Its probably software related. If you can't figure out what, perform reset. Not normal at all.

Hey you finally got the ls980! Congrats!
Are those g2 screen on hours for heavy gaming or video streaming tasks? Stock rom has a lot apps services draining battery, but you can easily remove a lot of bloatware as well as those apps you never use.
Debloat and debloat, you'll see g2 battery life is great!

Hey everyone. Without further a do, I am saying that my N4 battery suuuuucks really bad. Started on stock rom, flashed Chroma w/ latest franco kernel. Nope. Still lots of drain (slightly better overall, but nothibg major). Then flashed hells doctor kernel. Nope. Lots of drain when screen is on, but stable with screen off.
Honestly, I've seen people getting 6h on screen time. And everyone says that these kernels and rom can increase battery life by a margin, while mine stays the same.
Oh and there is a thing. Ive recently broke my stock charger and now using apple's ipad charger. Mine was 1.2 A and the one from apple is 1 A. Is this is an issue we are looking for?
Or its just a 2years old battery running out of its life cycles...?
Thank you!

Nexus 4 battere sucks really no matter what you plus your network coverage may impact vastly on performance. Anyway given the battery is 2 years old, I would say it's gone even if it says it's good but again it depends on your usage like continuous tethering or other heavy activity that makes the phone run hot

Well my usage can be heavy surfing on FB, Instagram and definetely FB messenger. I often use chrome and mainly everything is done under Wifi.
According to my screenshots, you cannclearly see that shes (battery) is ok when screen is off, no drain and etc. As soon I start using it it drains A LOT. Almost 90° angle on diagram It's crazy.
Plot twist: To prevent spam on the XDA forums, ALL new users prevented from posting outside links in their messages.
Yes, i have a new battery which was working well, but I flashed factory image 5.1.1 xxx47v and the batt life is really horrible now.
It's easy to replace the battery, I recommend taking out the sim card tray before taking the back off though.
I haven't been on here for a long time, whats the best rom, for batt life. I'm willing to go back to kit kat if I have to .
Also note that some of the screenshots with 6+ hours of SOT the user has handicapped their devices (disable 2 cores, lower max cpu/gpu frequency, etc).

Yes, I've seen people underlocking, undervolting etc. But that's not what I am planning to do with mine N4. Neither I'm hoping to have 6 hours SOT. 4 would be SUPER COOL. And that seems impossible for my device
Tired of getting 2h30 SOT (plugging off power at 7 am and needing to plug on again at 2 pm) I decided to spend a few bucks on a new battery. I own a nexus 5x for 10 months, so I thought maybe battery has been underperforming.
I've ordered also the needed tools so I could do the job myself. Very easy by the way.
I was excited to see how the brand new battery would perform the next day. So I plugged off power at 7 am and 2 pm I needed to plug back on power (2h30 sot). YEAH, I HAD NO IMPROVE AT ALL with a new battery.
Maybe it's that I have too many apps (100 at about), but I'm not the one who lives with whatsapp only.
So in order to relieve the pain of not getting through out the day I've bought an S7 edge and now I can settle down so I know I will get past through the day. I dislike many things on S7, like the crap fingerprint sensor and the inconsistent physical home button, but I'll try to live with it. My next bet would be the Xperia XZ, so I'm still considering.
So it was an unburden, but I feel I can help someone out with this experience.
Have you tried a third rom or ex kernel?
im kinda in the same boat. just received my 2nd replacement battery today... gonna see how the battery compares tomorrow with stock unrooted. if no change i'll be trying purenexus + elementalx with Hawktail 1.2 profile.... such a struggle with this phone........
I don't know about you, but my typical work day I range from 6-7 hours with around 3.5 SoT average. That's pretty okay, given how low our batteries are for this phone. I use SimpleAOSP + Franco kernel.

I know.
Since I have updated to Nougat, I have only 2 to 3 SOT. Also with franco kernel or elemtalx no improvement, no matter which profile.
Marchmallow was better with the battery performance.
I will try pure nexus with custom kernel (franco or elementalx).
I'm also wondering why the Android operating system has such a big battery consumption according to "betterbatterystats".
Otherwise always it was the google services.

A few questions
Which time do you plug off and on to power again? I mean, how many hours do you stay off the wall outlet?
How many apps do you have installed?
Do you use antes app/kernel for the purpose off extending battery life?
Thanks!

Mostly every night. Sometimes it gets me to 2 days of battery life. Im pretty heavy user
I have about 50 apps but i am very careful about apps i install and use. When i am at home on wifi all day it gets me 6-7 hrs SOT. I used most of the kernels i found on the XDA but now i am settled with minimalistic ABC rom with implemented DU kernel.

at first i was getting the same results but i've made some major improvements by using airplane mode when at work with wifi, greenifying almost all of my apps, removing Fitbit sync/notifications, and using the greenify manual hiberate now widget. getting over 2hrs of SoT now but it's still nowhere near the results I've seen from others using PureNexus Rom + ElementalX kernel (Hawktail 1.2 profile)
The battery of my Nexus 5x (not rooted) seemed to be nearly dead. Smartphone shut down at 50%, and sometimes the battery went down from 80% to 30% within a minute. Then suddenly the mainboard of my Nexus died. The mainboard was replaced and Android was resetted. After this the battery works as if it's a new battery.

I dont really know what you do in order to get less than 3h SOT, or what brightness you run your device on, or what apps you have installed, or if you have NFC, location, Bluetooth or LTE turned on all the time, but on this phone it is the usage that determines battery life. I got a new Nexus 5x with an old battery and had the same results. Ordered a new battery for about 10$ and got arround 5-5:30 h of SOT with the same usage over arround 43 h of stand by withouth charging in between on full stock. You might want to check whata draining your battery or maybe you are a multitasker that streams music, types on FB, browses instagram all at the same time while the screen is on 40% brightness.
For me 5x battery sucks, i want to get 6p soon, but price is a little bit too high now so i must wait some time to buy.
Im using Jolla kernel now, with small cluster -> 3cores, 1,2GHZ and big cluster -> 2 core 768MHz max.All on zzmove. Battery is now improved, some times big cluster shuts off sometimes it's working, but performance is good for dialy use. Multitasking is fine, chrome web browsing also. ~ 4h 20mins of SOT, previously ~ 3h.
So i think NOW battery is really good for my 1yr old phone.
ROM and kernel are inconsequential to battery life in comparison to normal factors such as usage, settings and signal. Without reducing performance or functionality (GAPs) the most you could hope for is +10-20%, if even that.
Low screen time doesn't mean your battery life is bad as that's just one form of measuring battery life. If you do a lot of messaging and phone calls for instance you will never have long screen time as you need to actively be using the screen in order to increase SoT. If SoT is your only measure of battery life then you don't understand how it works.
I regularly see 5-6 hours SoT over 24+ hours without root or disabling much, as I use my phone for mostly browsing and streaming.
Post some screenshots in our Battery Thread and I will take a look. Replacing hardware should be the last option for improving battery life.
I think it's not about the battery, rom, kernel, settings, installed apps....
I think......it's only about the device
I tried EVERYTHING. changed battery, all android versions, tried without google account, kernels, profiles, custom roms, interactive settings, I don't even use many apps
my device has abnormal consumption. period.
I have 3 friends with n5x that do more than 4 hrs of screen on
mine does 2. and I can do nothing. it's just this
I don't know if warranty could cover such thing, it would be hard to detect on RMA since is very user related

Use Greenify to kill some apps that work in background. If you are Facebook /Messenger user, to maximise the battery life uninstall them and use alternative one like the lite version of these.
