I've had my first S4 for 7 days. Needed 3 hard resets in the first week - UI freezes, hangs etc. Took it back to Telstra, confirmed bad hardware and gave me a new phone. Second handset has been fantastic - fast, smooth, stable.
Most Samsung features work pretty well - drama shot for junior sports coaching is an excellent idea. Love the fact that I can upgrade storage via SD card, link with Dropbox and can swap the battery for higher capacity if needs be. No need as yet - heavy use and my battery lasts more than 10 hours.
If you experience any interface issues, get the handset swapped: probably just a rare lemon. Thanks to everyone who responded on this thread.
Initial issues: features are unstable (gestures, air view, smart scroll, interface and keyboard hangs).
Now I definitely don't regret this new phone having used many different types over the years (Blackberry, HTC TiTan Windows mobile, iPhone 3, iPhone 4, now Android).
Send it back to Telstra for a replacement

LOL, a new sd card won't enhance performance btw...

Should be fine. No issues what so ever with mine on Optus - rooted and remove all Optus craps.
Of course it will. When you have all your music, pictures and some data sitting on a slow device (like an old sd card), then indexing slows down (picture gallery, videos, music. map data). Like any IT system, a fast phone will be slowed down by the slowest link - if that bottleneck is the sd card, then it needs to be remediated.
That is the reason why I did not get the S4. To new technology for me to mess with.

Will definitely update the thread title to more accurately reflect my experience with the device. But surely I need more than 3 hours for the device to prove itself??
Flash performance, and SW performance degrades over time, so I'm giving this phone 48 hours to prove it's stable, before changing my mind.
I'm not convinced yet, but at least the signs are positive in the first 3 hours.

Of course I will, once satisfied this was just a bad piece of hardware one-off. But performance degraded over time, I will post updates over the weekend and hopefully change this title to "satisfied" on Sunday (ie 48 hours to ensure it was just an anomaly)

24 hours after exchanging the handset, I must say this one is much more stable and I have confidence in my choice again.Hopefully it continues to please and there's no freeze. 24 hours now of smooth use, no hangups/freezes.
But, the native email app crashes every now and then, only while checking Exchange emails. Anybody else seeing that?

Swapped from the atrix and never looked back. Getting 7 hours standby per 10% of battery so I'm lucky I don't have the battery drain issue. Though having said that, the screen really sucks up power when you've got it on.

I feel the same way as all of you. Just got the SGS2 Friday night and absolutely love it. I rooted it within a few hours as I wanted to Titanium backup but for now I am totally happy on stock. The phone is absolutely brilliant. I love surfing webpages now, no more lag even if I choose to play a flash video within the page. Video recording is amazing too. I was a little nervous reading about issues people were having but I have experienced none.
I also love that you can turn the soft keys off or extend how long they are on for. Samsung really thought things through on the design of this phone.

Sirs,
How are you all doing? this is my very first post and I decided to ride dirty with the android OS finally (I'm late..) Originally coming from that dead Symbian OS environment.. I love customization and everything related to tinkering the phones hardware and software..
So now I am about to buy a used galaxy S I9000, I just want to know what are the things to look for this used android unit? I can see it's just slightly used so what will I look for aside from the outside appearance? How about in the software itself?
I only know that the phone is on GB 2.3.3 I think and it has like a custom way of killing apps, launching..really it's my first time on android and I need professional advises and this is the best site to ask from, I know.

Unless you're installing the latest beta ROMs or custom ROMs, this phone is actually very stable and reliable for day to day use. And the UI is fast and responsive enough on 2.3.3. In any case, in terms of reliability and speed, the SGS is miles ahead of any Symbian device.
Wtf???

I have nothing but good things to say about my phone. Gps is accurate and always has been. I knocked back an sgs2 upgrade to wait for next nexus.

Guys,
My use of phone dialer, messaging and call logs comes under basic use.
And dialer lags, contacts gives message 'no additional info available' and then shows number.no matter which rom you use.
Even dialer removed from memory.
I have 2 phones in house one running stock 2.3.3 and one 2.3.5 so I am not imagining anything.
Dont reboot phone for a week and see what happens.
If it was all that good, all the ram tweaks, kernel tweaks, optimization tweaks, wouldn't even exists.
If your expr. & opinion differs post it.

PS how to enter to download mode?
I'll try first dealing with the stock roms, is there any 2.3.7 GB for galaxy cause I see it everywhere along with the CM7? is that an official firmware or CM7 based on that OEM firmware? maybe when I want more, that's the time I'll do a CM7 flash..what about skype video calling or google talk? is it good in this phone?

Another important thing to look for: if it enters Download Mode [Vol Down + Home + Power]
If not, it can be fixed, but it involves a little risk. This would be the only risky thing you'll do software wise, after your Download Mode works, it's very hard to brick the phone.

2.3.7 was a Nexus upgrade that added things like NFC, which most phones do not have the hardware to support this. CM7 uses Nexus source code. I don't believe anything helpful for you was added/changed.
And try not to believe the crap these people are spewing. My contacts, diallers, and whatever else that guy was rambling about are just fine. And obviously that is not a problem across all ROMs, considering most ROMs use different apps (for example, Samsung apps aren't run on AOSP ROMs—and I haven't seen this problem on either).
Good luck! It's an exciting phone.
wow, thanks to all of your advices dudes! what would be a good protector for this phone aside from the screen guards?
This is mostly just me, after a whole 24 hours of being a Note 10.1 owner (woot, go me) being annoyed that its the 3G owners that have gotten all the update goodies!
Germany got theirs a month ago, UK got theirs today... but only the 8000 models.
In theory this would mean that the 8010/8013 models will get released in Germany first, and then in the UK a month after that...
I really really *really* hope that this is not the case though. For this would be... vexing.
Saying that, I'll probably end up rooting and putting the uk 8000 rom onto my tablet anyway, as I am an impatient soul. But it is the principle of the thing that counts!
I think the reason this whole thing bothered me is this poll I saw the other day - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1871383
If the 3G model was the most popular, then prioritising that firmware would make sense. It seems as though the WiFi models are by far the most prolific though!
OR.... WiFi users are more likely to answer polls.
Keep wishing hard guys, maybe we will get an update soon. and then hopefully someone will finally do a non-8000 custom rom!!

I'm using "Team Union Rom" 8000 on my 8010 wifi without any problems what's so ever. All you have to do is use SetCPU which comes with the Rom to scaling: on-demand and check set on boot. No os issues, no random reboot all fine.

I'm pretty peev'd about this too. Can't believe that a non-3G device is getting the updates last of all. Surely theres no modem nor carrier testing to worry about so it should have actually been the first to be released?

DME for Enterprise (Work exchange emails) - That's because the administrator has set it to not allow ROOTED or Jailbroken devices. (I know its because I set it up lol!)
There is a work around but I care not to implement it as it still means turning a security feature off which is not worth it just for my sake!!.

I'm also a new owner of this tablet(closing in on 3 weeks). I have a Galaxy Nexus, so I know what it feels like to get updates fast. It's a little troublesome waiting for Samsung to update this device. I told myself that I wouldn't complain since Google probably takes around the same amount of time putting together updates, but they have the luxury of seeming fast by putting them out first. What I don't understand is why Samsung is releasing the JB update for the the 3G version first. This may be due to my ignorance, if so please excuse it, but I thought it would be easier to update the WiFi version especially considering they're pretty much done the development of it.
First off, I deserve very little credit for this. All of the heavy lifting is done by the great CM team. All I did was make a few modifications to their work.
This is a no phone, "Touch" version of CM10.1 stable for the Samsung Captivate, based on my previous work with ICS and GB roms. I have removed the APKs from the ROM that control phone functions and most of the cell signal icons. The dialer is still there, but the phone does not work, INCLUDING 911 CALLS."Secret Codes" work through the dialer.
Install instructions: (If you are here I am sure you know how to search so I will not provide direct links, but I like GooManager)
1.) Install cm-10.1.0-captivatemtd
2.) Install cm-10.1.0-captivatemtd - nophone_v1
3.) Wipe Data/Factory Reset
4.) Install JB GAPPS Package
5.) Reboot
You will get a FC error upon boot, but otherwise everything seems to work. I will update the not working list as I come across issues.

For those of us with kids, it allows them to play with their own device without risk of a 911 call!
I use mine as a baby monitor now connected to our IP cameras.
Also battery life is SIGNIFICANTLY improved.
And yes, I know that you can just turn on airplane mode, but 2 year-olds are quite resourceful. Likewise, simply removing the SIM card does not prevent emergency calls.
The thought was for a more elegant solution.

That's a bit harsh dontcha think? Besides, how is it ruined? All you have to do is flash another ROM, which if you are on this site you can pretty much do in your sleep. :good:
This phone has been flashed no fewer than 100 times and probably closer to 200. It has run every version of Android and CM available as well as AOKP, MIUI and my Froyo and ICS Touch Mods. It has been flashed back to stock and loaned to more than 5 friends, returned and reflashed to something else before being loaned out again. This phone has paid for itself over and over, even though it has not been my primary phone since 2010.
Besides, 30$ baby monitors are crap as are the $150 video ones and if you use a subscription service, $15 mp3 players won't solve your needs either (or at least not very well.)

well if that is your thinking ok but honestly I think your modification is worthless. no imprecive one baby monitor costs $ 30 and an MP3 $ 15. so why ruin a good $ 200 dollars phone if with $ 45 dollars if you solve your needs

Dude your post is absolutely worthless, if you don't like this guys project then why are you in this thread, this thread is for development talk not complaining about something that you haven't/dont use. I for one have always enjoyed this guy's idea and have used it and also copied it to my other devices, it beats having ny captivate as a $200 paper weight and same can be said about my skyrocket, gs2, gs3, note which would all be useless without this form of a modification.

For those of us with kids, it allows them to play with their own device without risk of a 911 call!
I use mine as a baby monitor now connected to our IP cameras.
Also battery life is SIGNIFICANTLY improved.
And yes, I know that you can just turn on airplane mode, but 2 year-olds are quite resources full. Likewise, simply removing the SIM card does not prevent emergency calls.
The thought was for a more elegant solution.

I also will add that airplane mode disables WiFi as well.
Good work op. I just dusted off the old cappy and will give this a shot.

A quick update on battery life.
2d 1h 3m on battery.
34% remaining.
Anyone know if voodoo sound pro will work with cm10 on the cappy? The audio chip in the GS1 blows any GS2-4 outta the water sound quality wise been using mine as an ipod/bike computer for years. What's with all the hate on repurposing an old out dated device? Many thanks to dfellars! I've just been rocking it in airplane mode for the past year or so.

glad people are finding this useful. I'll try to pop in now and then to keep it updated.
Great idea! This ROM will be the solution to my problem. I use my captivate for games, music, camera and so on and i dont need the phone part. Will test soon. One request, just like you took CM10.1 and took all the "phone" stuff out (you know what i mean) , can you do it to other roms like captivating, pac, supernexus....? Thanks in advance!
So does the GPS not work AT ALL, or is it just or is it just spotty without a cell signal? I've been using my Cappy as a speedometer in my beater 4runner and for offroad navigation with Oruxmaps, but everything else about this ROM sounds exactly what I've been looking for since I upgraded to my Note II. I pulled the SIM out and it works pretty well other then the GPS sometimes taking long then expected, but if I download A-GPS data before I leave it locks on fast. I'm hoping that is the only issue with this ROM, and not that it just flat out doesn't work.
Keep up the good work, and don't listen to ignorant people who just wanna put you down for making something a bunch of people will find useful.

The GPS problem is with the Captivate, not this Rom or any other Rom.
The Captivate has always had problems with its GPS. Just the way this phone is.

Fair enough....thats all I wanted to know. I will say that ROM upgrades have made it 100 times better then it was when stock, but its still sucky compared to my Note II. Even with cell stuff turned off it will only take 10 seconds to lock on most of the time, and rarely over a minute or two.
I'll have to give this a try in the next day or two.

Not sure if I'm going to root yet as I'm still trying to get used to this phone. So far it seems ok.

Rooting will not change the phone experience in any way... Swapping ROMs improve it though.
Welcome to the Note 4, I'm sure you'll love it!
Let us know how your experience goes.
I really love my Note 4. I am currently running Infamous ROM 2.8 and the performance is incredible. It blows the stock ROM out of the water.
Welcome to a real camera
I'm in a similar situation. Came from using a nexus 4. Not sure if I want to root or which Samsung apps people tend to turn off and which they find useful. Fun stuff though. I think I'm gonna wait for lollipop update and decide then.

Go a week or more and then decide which apps you'd like to freeze or leave alone.
Should be enough time to get a feel for it and decide which apps you like.
I would like to know if there is any way to get the voice activation on Google now to work while S-voice is on

Oh, but it will.. And it does. Rooting alone allows you to do most of the things you can do on a custom ROM, but you're doing it to the stock ROM. Even without a custom recovery, you can still modify system files, freeze/uninstall system apps, run root apps, etc.

Oh I know that, but I meant rooting alone does not degrade the experience. As you rightfully said, the experience can be improved drastically while rooted even on stock firmware.
Cheers ?

Take a look around the Q&A and General sections. Most questions you have, already have been asked

i also have an upgrade available but im not sure if i should use it on the note 4. it is tempting but in a few months the m9 will be here along with other s810 processor based devices. Plus i hear the n4s battery life isnt that great.

I would definitely root and flash a ROM asap. Stock rom is ok but any of the TouchWiz ROM for T Mobile will flat out just feel snappier.
Played with a n4 at bestbuy today. Lagged like hell for me. Even the samsung rep saw it. To say the least i walked away.

Welcome to the majors op. You'll love it. I had an m8 before. The freedom of having an unlocked bootloader, root, and plenty custom roms got me away from HTC, as well.
No more having to s-off and the firewater exploits being closed and lack of roms.

Where did you hear that the battery life isn't good?
I typically get 2.5 days per full charge with between 4.5 and 6 hours of screen on time per charge depending on if I am reading, or doing media (games, youtube).
If anything I would wait for the Note 5, but that will be a while. I'd suggest getting the Note 4 because it's quite simply a very amazing beast of a phone and then using JUMP to upgrade in 6 months if you so desire.

Compared to the process of rooting a htc how difficult is it to root the note 4
Sent from my SM-N910T using XDA Free mobile app
It's way easier to root the note 4:
You're in in 5.
Here are the instructions:

Had to do one at my parents house.
It took me 10 minutes because I was downloading a rom, at the same time, and my parents internet sucks.

Which Best Buy? From what I've seen at nearly all my local Best Buy they only have dummy phones and none of them carry t mobile phones
