just switched from nexus4 to s4 , things i dont like - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys,
Just ditched my nexus 4 for s4 due to brightness and camera issues which I hated the most of nexus4 rest the speed etc was completely enough for a average user like me.
what i miss mostly of my nexus4 is simplicity, whereas s4 is too complicated to use due to tooo many features which are hard to understand.
what i want to know is it possible right now to make it simple as vanilla...
sorry if i wasn't clear enough to make you guys explain.
Thanks
p.s. in terms of these days phone, its sick!

Just spend ten minutes looking through the settings and getting it how you want it. Pretty much all the features that you don't need can be disabled. If you've had a Nexus 4 I don't see how an S4 could be any more difficult to use to be honest.

Thanks for your reply wolf, is it as easy as it was with nexus4 or do i have to face any trouble. I'm completely newbie in all this.

A. Settings, its easier in vanilla.
B.All the samsung apps are coming before
C. When I long-click an app in applications menu, i liked the idea of app info/uninstall
D. Hate samsung apps ..
Also how do i find what processor my phone is running ? As I'm not sure yet which processor in India they've released.

They've released the i9500 version and you can check the Model number of the device:
Settings->last tab->About Device->Model Number.

Just install another launcher like Nova or APEX, they will give you the plain stock Android experience you are looking for. I have Nova running and it actually sped up my phone substantially. I also checked the RAM availability before and after using Nova and essentially stayed the same. Give it a try.

Black and Neon Green colors? I'm guessing you haven't given Nova or Apex a try. It changes everything, homescreen, app drawer, and with Nova you can even set a theme color that changes the color accent colors of the Menus. I used to own a Galaxy Nexus, and I have the options using these launchers to revert everything to stock Android. Don't knock it until you try it, I mean really try it though.

If you're talking about Touch Wiz, the option is in the Touch Wiz app drawer. Hit Menu, then View Type, There's Alphabetical Grid, or Alphabetical List.

Just install nova or apex launcher. Works like a charm.
I prefer nova launcher though.

i'm coming from a nexus 4 as well i too hate all the preinstalled samsung apps, but I disabled most of them.
What I can't stand is the physical home button. Its not a deal breaker but i HATE IT

i switched from nexus 4 too.
things i hate about the s4:
1. back button on the right side because i usually use my phone with the left hand.
2. no recent apps button. so holding the home button is slow.
3. no aosp browser unless using doc's barebone rom. chrome and stock browser is so slowww compared to this.
4. bloated apps and bloated gimmicks features like smart and gesture things which slow down the phone. resolved by turning them off and using doc's barebone rom.
things to love on the s4:
1. nice screen, i mean really really great.
2. better camera than the nexus 4, the nexus 4 has cool tint, like blueish.
3. micro sd card
4. replacable battery, i mean just get the battery kit and have infinity battery. awesome.

Touchwiz appreciation thread.

Is it just me, or is touchwiz on a tablet actually really nice :L
i know it slows the tab down, but the widgets icons and notification bar r really minimalist and generally not bad looking!
And the fact that stock touchwiz hc roms come with polaris office and a pen memo means that i dont really mind the occasional lag it has :L
Im also looking forward to the ics touchwiz build aswell.
Does anyone agree with me?

Yeah that's the thing though, a while I understand touchwiz on a phone is ugly. On a tablet its actually nice. :L they (samsung) havent done that much in terms of looks with tw, which is gd.
So yeah, bring on the trolls
I don't really see it. I have been using touching HC 3.2 for as long as I have the tablet. I just recently installed touchwiz-less ICS and now never want to go back to touching. I do not miss polarised office at all since it doesn't work with swiftkey tablet x, and ihave replaced pen memo with quill, which was only 20 cents. But I guess tastes are different...

Well, there are a few things I didn't like about TW:
1. Bright settings menu. The whole tab felt that it should have a dark theme and in most places it did. But then there was the settings menu that feels out of place.
2. The statusbar is annoying. I don't know how often I accidentally made a Screenshot when I didn't want to. Or brought up the pop up bar which contains alps I never use.

Having a Screenshot function available is nice, but I agree. But I prefer the way the ICS Rom I am using implements it: hidden in the power menu. I mean, why would you need it readily available at all times?

Honeycomb is a very good concept but a "beta version" software: slow, laggy, unstable and incomplete in several ways... I got my G.Tab 10.1 in January and 2 weeks later I flashed (and kept updated ever since) ICS KANG and loving it.
That said, I do like the added Samsung apps and functionality (on both my Note and my G.Tab 10.1) so as soon as it comes out I will flash Samsung's ICS update.
The Note is already great as it is on the latest LB1 Gingerbread ROM so I don't mind waiting a little more for ICS BUT I really can't wait to get Samsung's ICS ROM for the Tab 10.1 and pretty pissed off that they can't seem to be able to give a less vague date.
I hope they make it up to me by adding the split screen funcionality shown off on the Note 10.1 and a revamped note app which syncs across my Note's S Memo app and Outlook notes..
I think touchwiz on 3.X is amazing, really improves the experience. I cringe whenever I see the stock notification bar (I have to open it, hit settings and then hit settings again to actually open the settings compared to open it and hit settings once in touchwiz).
If touchwiz is that amazing, what's HTC sense? Sense is great on both phones and tabs. Look at the HTC jetstream, HTC did a much better job then Samsung.
I don't mind Touchwiz. I like some of the little extras, etc. Stock Honeycomb is still fugly so TW helps a tad, but since it's so light, not much. ICS is a huge improvement on phones, but not so much in tablets. It's bascially what Honeycomb should have been in the first place.
I'd rather have HTC Sense, but since HTC never had any good wifi tablets last year, it just wasn't in the cards. I will say, the GT 10.1 has been a good tablet and does everything I need it to do, but I won't be buying anymore Samsung products like.... um.... Ever. My next tab will be W8 and probably from Asus or something.
I have never liked HTC Sense at all, Touchwiz is a great compromise between adding functionality and staying as close as possible at the "Android experience" (which keeps on getting better and better). Ideally I would like to have a consistent experience across all Android devices with, at best, "touches" added by the different makers and design and hardware to differentiate among them. Sense goes totally against this.

why do so many of you hate TouchWiz? TouchWiz is amazing!

i see thread after thread just spewing out hate for touchwiz..
how can so many of you not like touchwiz, lemme correct that *HATE touchwiz... i realize its the hip thing to do, to hate touchwiz, and you somehow think it makes you look pro, or cool, or like you know what youre talking about, but touchwiz rocks.. most of you havent even seen what the alternative is, you just hate it cause everyone else does.
do you realize losing touchwiz loses:
*built in screen capture by pressing home+lock
*task manager built into long press
*swipe left/right to call/text in contacts/dialer/texts
*toggles in drop down menu
*amazing UI in camera/file manager/ music player
*ability to adjust display options, beyond what stock roms are capable of
*swype
* ability to adjust brightness by moving dropbar back and forth
* the option to use the actual touchwiz launcher
* Divx, Xvid, and .avi support out of the box, as well as other formats supported only by samsung
*S-Voice
*Eye Tracking
*Smart Stay, keeps the screen awake while you're looking at the display
*Popup Play
its not like having a stock rom gives you anything in place of these.. if you dont like the touchwiz launcher, you can install another one, nova, apex, go, adw, adw ex, i cant see why ppl are soo determined to get rid of it, and have nothing in its place. would you really rather have no options, in place of where you DID have options?
answer now is not anymore or don't hate it that much anymore.
I don't hate the touch wize, I hate the touchwize launcher and i miss all my touchwize apps, I actually wish I could have to touchwize framework on my custome ics rom just with a another launcher

I really am hoping that I will like the new version of Touchwiz! If I can change the icons in the dock and on the homescreens as well as the size of the grid on the homescreen, then I see myself using it on my phone. If I can't do both of those things, then I'm using Apex.
I don't want to stare at the default dock icons all day long, they are way too cartoony and colorful for me. But yeah, if I can change ALL the icons in Touchwiz, slap a nice and dark wallpaper on there and get some Metrostation/Minimal Text goodness going... I would LOVE to use Touchwiz, because I always try to install as few third-party apps and stuff on my phones. I'm just afraid that it won't allow me the level of customization that I want. Lucky for me Android is about options, so I can have an alternative launcher on my phone within 2 minutes if I want.
So for me it's not about trying to be cool and hip. Those things come naturally to me.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think ditching Touchwiz will affect like half of the things on your little list there?
EDIT: Task manager, swiping left/right in contacts, drop down toggles, camera UI, swype, brightness control, popup play and certainly Divx, Xvid, and .avi support... I don't see those being controlled by what launcher you use? I could be wrong though
Most of that stuff isnt anything to do with TW at all. Most of it is in stand alone apps that will work whether you use TW as a launcher or not. I will be using Apex launcher and i will still have all the Samsung extras.
AOSP, Cyanogen and AOKP ROMS are over rated, most are slower than custom ROMs based on Samsung stock, they have missing or broken features and are often unstable. I dont see the point in getting a phone like the S3 and putting inferior software on it, why not just buy a Nexus to start with? The best ROMs are custom ROMs based on stock, optimised and free of the truly useless bloat.

The codec support is definatly the best and I love the small things they added like the customizable battery percentage, extended toggles in the pulldown, newsticker on the lockscreen, shortcuts on the lockscreen etc.. it seems like they let you customize alot and I think you can really tell they hired someone from the CM team.
The new touchwiz also looks pretty good, I really like that they use 5 icons now. The appdrawer looks great and the plain black pulldown also looks nice. I think it looks very grown up now and even though it's using popping colours I don't find it too tacky or cartoonish like many others. I can't stand the "buhuhuhu they ruined the beauty of stock ICS buhhuhuhuhu" comments anymore it might not be "eyecandy" like sense which btw. I find extremly ugly but it is super smooth, compareable with iOS, it's minimalistic and not too overloaded.
The browser in gingerbread was crushing pretty much everything. It kinda sucks on ICS ATM, but seeing some videos it seems like it's fixed on the S3. Chrome comes close but it's still so buggy and lacks features. Samsung still has the smoothest browser, thats for sure...

Absolutely not true! CM is probably one of the most stable aosp roms. It will provide you (after some time passed for development) with superior performance, battery life and sometimes options like ui themes etc.
This is fact, not just user experience... but for everyone the roms they prefer the most. Personally looking forward to have dualboot and cm9 as primary rom...

[Q] So, has anyone come to like TouchWiz?

After a tried & true CM guy (running it on my 3 tablets, 3 different phones), I'm not sure I can stand to lose some of the features that TW provides (unless of course they were runnable in AOSP):
- voice control of lock screen/camera
- air gestures
- all the S4 specific sensors
- and one lil thing I've come to like more than swiping between pages in the app draw: the pagination dots! I've come to really like those, especially since I've got like 8 pages of apps
I just wish I had the look of AOSP, configurability, control, etc.
One TW thing that irks me: apps drawer on the far right & not movable.
I use Nova launcher which lets you customize the look quite a bit. And all the TW goodies are still available.
I like touch wiz it ain't bad over all especially with some tweaking.

Didn't like it when I got my epic 4g, but I got used to it after awhile.
After 4 years with Sence, I'm loving the look and features of TW.
I'm getting used to it. I got sick of Sense so its nice to have a change anyway. I just hate how resource hoggy it is.

Great suggestion. I've got both Nova and Go launchers on my phone, and like what they do for me w/o messing with TW. I like Go a little better because it rotates the home screens with the device, something Nova does not.
I'm a fan of TW so far. I also came from the HTC Sense world, and while there are pluses and minuses to both, I'm overall happier with TW.
I really like the small things like the swiping texting or call when I contact lists, the direct call when you have a contact pulled up.
I like the number of texts, email or missed calls displayed on the app
So i have definitely grown to like tiuchwiz

For the record Nova lets you rotate your home screen as well.
I have never understood to intense hatred that still exists for TW. True at one point it was a smothering overlay that killed performance but now it is a smooth "MOD" that I like more than "Pure" android especially since Samsung's best goodies live on TW.
Let the flames begin!
This is the 11th Android phone I've owned, and for the first time ever I'm not in any hurry to flash an AOSP rom. TW really does offer a lot of features that I would miss if I went to AOSP. I'll probably try CM when we have a stable build, but in the meantime I really couldn't be more happy with this phone as it came out of the box.

I was a big sense UI fan from the hero, Evo, Evo shift. I always kepts it on Sense ui even tho CM was a hell of a lot fast on it and didnt kill the battery as much. I liked the look and feel of sense ui. Then i went to the Sii and took some getting use to and since the SII i went to the SIII and now on the S4 and I have grown to love it. I still have Nova Launcher for a quick change if i get bored but i always end up back on TW.
The one thing I can't stand is the fact that the location of the app drawer is fixed.. If it weren't I would at least consider not using Holo Launcher

I would think it'd be possible, depending on what TouchWiz does under the covers.
Really, I actually *like* TouchWiz on the S4. I haven't started playing with any ROM's even though I'm now rooted because I like the functionality I have and I'm afraid I'd lose it.

TW custom ROMs have all of the TouchWiz features... hence why they are TouchWiz ROMs lol.

Software - is it that bad?

Tempted to walk into my local 3 shop and pick one up for £399 looks like a great phone and will have better battery than Nexus 5 which is a big thing for me. My issue is the software, is it that bad out of the box say versus a Nexus 4 running on pure Android? Havent played around with custom ROMs but thinking I might have to with this device.

Im coming from the GNex- which was a pure android experience to the LG G2- and in my opinion the software is fine. I had to apply a theme, which was super easy to get it to look the way I like: but the software doesn't get in my way. the phone is SO customizable that you can make it how you like. The phone is butter smooth and work great for me. I dislike only 2-3 minor things about the phone which can be fixed...
I'm running it stock: no root

I was used to running cm 10.2 on my lg g pro (the g2 is so much better imo) and the software is fine. I just flashed clean rom and a mod to get rid of the at&t logo and phone volume slider and I can't be happier. I also got rid of the soft buttons and use GMD, I almost never touch the back buttons with the knock on and made nova launcher double tap to lock. Pretty freaking awesome.

Came from GNex with AOSP ROM and I think LGs ROM is okay. I was expecting worse, but it's not terrible. There is way too much bloat (Verizon), but I will most definitely be install a custom ROM as soon as AOSP ROMs hit the grid. I do like the knock on feature and some other stuff they baked in though.
I have a few apps out of the box that are draining my battery at idle which I will have to figure out.

It's not that bad at all. Certainly better than Touchwiz. I actually like this LG UI more than any I've used outside of some of the modded AOSP ROMS (CM, AOKP, PA etc.). It has a few quirks, but nothing that I would consider to be a deal breaker.
I ran tw I ran aokp, I ran cm plus a multitude of kangs of all three including miui.
I am 5 days in and not once got bored, glitches, battery drains. Its got all the customazions I need, except dpi and permissions. I am cured flashaholic. That says a lot about the software coming from an avid flasher
I have been a big fan of cm for some time now and love the stock android look. I may very well install a theme to get this look at some point but I see no real reason to flash or even root at this point.
The software is smooth and customizable. It is heavily skinned in a love it or hate it kind of way, but themes make it far less of an issue.
Hope this helps!

so no thesoftware is not bad
I like it, it's smooth unlike touchwiz and mostly everything can be changed. Refreshing.

Came from a nexus 4 and I love the software.
My only wish is that I want more multitasking stuff (like TW's mutiwindow just without the bloat )
yeah multitasking is android 8ssue they implemented window support on an app per app and not os wide basis, thats why not all aps are launchable that way
The LG skin/software is awesome. I really like it. Its fast, fluid, and has many features. example: theme keyboard, theme ui keys, nav ring shortcuts, pop up windows for text and phone calls, etc..
With the nexus 5 predicted to have a 2300mAh battery and a worse camera at £399 it's a cracking deal for the LG G2. I work at 3 and am tempted to take up the deal.

The skin is more that adequate for anything you want to do. this isnt 2010 where htc sense and samsungs stuff blew ****. everything is great. whether it is motorola or sony's or whoever, they are all fine....
I hate that stock android is taken to the point of god like. its good. just like sense. or touchwiz. stock isnt better than either of them. they will all do the samething. in fact, often these skins on top have more options and are a fresh breath of air from stock
No I love the software on the g2. I had 2 s4's and both lagged and didn't run as well as I wanted it too. Great processor but software bogged it down. I like this phone so far for its software and its beautiful screen. Samsung threw whatever they thought up into tw and it was a lot of junk I personally didn't use nor anyone that I know personally

Google Experience Launcher

Just wonderering if anyone is using the Google Experience launcher? Looks really good on the note almost feels like a Nexus experience. Also it responds to the OK google command on the home screen. Always listening which I thought was only a feature on the Nexus 5 / Motorola?
I hate touchwiz and it was one of the main reasons I was hesitant about buying the note. Now I have the best of both world, best tablet and nexus like experience. The Spen etc still work perfectly. Worth giving it a try..

I used it but ended up back on nova as i am comfortable with it and love the endless customizing.
I'm using it. Wont go back to TW anymore. I wish that there would be option to make folders in application list.

I was using Nova previously. Agree Nova is also superb. I have moved over to google experience as I have a nexus phone and like the fact basically consistent. I have been using android devices for years now but only used Nova a few months ago. Really impressive how it changes the feel / look of the tablet.
Googles launcher is free of course. I got the paid version of Nova...

But how?!
When I launch it the portrait view is the only one available and I don't know how to access the launcher settings
Thanks in advance ?
Hello guys,
I'm coming in from the Note Pro side and wanted to reflect the OP comments. The launcher is smooth as butter and as stated it's as though the GNL was made for the Galaxy Note lineup. I've noticed all S Pen functionalities are fully intact. The best of both worlds...multi Window SPen features with a PURE Google experience!!!

For me it is portrait when tab is horizontal, and vertical when held normally.

Have you turned off screen rotation by mistake?
Just access the normal Samsung setting screen (by tugging the top of the screen down with your finger) and it is the 4th option from the left. Make sure it is selected... Only thing I can. Think of. Bet you have unselected it by mistake.

Yes, if you put the icons on the bottom row, then it is a dock and doesn't move as you swipe between screens.
I've got the paid Nova Launcher as well. I've stuck with it on my S3, but I haven't gone back on the tablet yet. On the S3, I thought the icons were too big and there is zero customization. However, I've enjoyed the Google Now Launcher on the tablet more so than I thought I would.
If there was a Google Now widget that is always listening that I could use with Nova, I would go back. Heck, I might still go back after the novelty of "Ok Google" wears off.
I finally did it......GREAT LAUNCHER!!!
