Unable to install apps when... - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone noticed that you're unable to install apk's if you have an app changing the screen settings?!?
I wanted to sideload AdAway and was unable to. Then I rebooted and could install it before Screen Adjuster loaded, went ahead and disabled it now it's fine.
Had the same problem when using Dim Screen on the GS3. Weird thing is that I'm able to use the entire screen except for the Install button.

Home button screwing up

I am running cm10, and my home button (hard or soft) does not work. the screen just turns blank then goes back to the app i was on. sliding the home button up to get to GNow doesn't work either. this happens with every app and nightly version i use since 11/19. i have reflashed, cleared caches, etc. and found that the error was in my data partition- and more specifically, one of my apps. here is a link to my logcat when i pressed the soft home button:
http://pastebin.com/udGmNByF
and here is the list of all the folders in my /data/app folder:
http://pastebin.com/ZugMN6k1
If you need anything else, just ask. Thanks!

I would guess that one of your installed apps has captured your home button then is crashing when it tries to use it. To find out which one it is, temporarily install a third party launcher like zeam or adw and the next time you press the home button a list of eligible apps that can use the home button pops up. Your bad app is probably on that list. Chose the new launcher, make it default and see if your problem goes away.

That didn't work, it just turned black again. Would only an app with su permissions be able to do this, or any app at all?
By "do this", I mean screw up the home button. Also, I wiped the data, and it worked fine, but after I installed all of my apps, it stopped working again. Also, I am running some other apps that aren't from the Play Store (well they are, but the apk's were downloaded from another source). Would those external apps be the culprit?

They do not need su access to capture the home button. When you say reinstall, do you mean reinstall, or do you mean restore with a backup program. The latter usually restores the app's data with it and recreates your problem.

I mean reinstall, like from the play store, but it did it automagically when i logged into google play, i didn't need to go to each app and install it.
Would the external apps be a problem?
Also, I know that in the Manualnooter for the stock OS there is an app called "Homecatcher". would that help at all?
Okay- I looked through the logcat and guessed what the issue was- lock screen was disabled.
I re-enabled it through the notification bar, and home button is fine. Any reason why this might be? And how would I make it so that I can disable the lockscreen again?

Dont let play store install them all at once. Back them up with TB and reinstall them one by one until your problem re-occurs. And do it without the data. Don't know about homecatcher. That is for stock.
Okay, I've narrowed theproblem down more. If the NC boots with the lock screen enabled, you are fine, even if you disable it. But if it boots with the lock screen disabled, then the home button will not work until you re-enable it and unlock the device. After you e-enable it, you can disable the lock screen again. Not anything major, but definitely an annoyance. Should I report this in the CM10 thread and ask them to fix it? Sorry if I sound like a big ******* taking their work for granted, but I don't have a 64-bit computer to build on. If I had one, I would prbly fix the problem myself. Oh well, thta's what Xmas is for. (A bit off topic from this thread, but is the Acer C7 Chromebook 64-bit? If it is then i would just hack ubuntu on it then build off of that.)

Screen off-on cycle, always returns to home screen?

My expected behavior: Open app (like a file explorer) >>> turn screen off (or time out)>>> turn scren on >>> file explorer should be still open
observed behavior: Open app >>> turn screen off >>> turn screen on >>> always back at home screen of launcher
IRRITATING!

Solved--
Derp... it's my all my own fault... warning... super genius at work.
I had created an automatic sequence of sequences that occurs when the screen goes off. Part of which included checking wifi status and then disabling wifi if I wasn't at home. But it would enable wifi, if I was at home, AND launch GrooveIP app AND then return to home screen so I wasn't turning my phone on to see the GrooveIP dialer.
Oh, yeah... I remember doing that now... lol.
Work-around achieved. And it all works. Yay.
And in other good news I got my SDK (in particular the ddms) working for my Nexus 4. Apparently I had a total of 3 Android SDKs installed on my PC. I had forgotten about one install. The one that I forgotten about was the one that I kept updating when I updated. And one that I kept launching ddms from was not getting updated and so it was derping with the N4.
So, Double derp on me... all fixed now...

How to disable first swipe screen on rooted NST 1.2.1

I have a rooted NST with Mod Manager, I checked the box to remove the swipe screen savers but it still shows up upon booting the device. Is there anyway to get rid of this first swipe?

Not sure about this because it may yield the same result, but there has been past mention in the forum of "No Lock" (PlayStore). This supposedly disables the lock screen and awakening would default to a press of the "N" button. Is that what you want?
Anyway, the PlayStore tells me that the app is not compatible with the NST although the Android level required is 1.5 and higher , so you'd need to get it elsewhere and sideload it to try it out. Clearly some forum members have gotten some version to work in the past.

Today new buttons appeared in stock apps?

Today I noticed my 6P had some new buttons in some of the applications. I first noticed them when watching videos in the Youtube App, then zoom control buttons in the camera app. I first noticed this months ago when using Chroma after switching to many roms (Pure Nexus, Resurrection, Benzo) and finally going back to Chroma the buttons did not return. Suddenly today they came back! I didn't flash anything last night. What could cause buttons to appear in google apps?. The apps didn't even get updated.
settings > accessibility
turn off 'switch access'
If it is already off, you have recently installed some other app that is enforcing that setting, find it and disable or uninstall it.

Question: screen overlay detected... How do I fix it?

Hi,
I am trying to use Waze on my phone, but the app won't open as it keeps saying screen overlay detected. I have gone into my settings and turned off the overlay for all the apps apart from the system apps. But it is still not working.
I have tried searching on Google, and don't have any of the apps installed like twilight, luxe or Facebook which are supposed to be causing the problem.
Any other suggestions on how to fix it?
Cheers

Are you using swipe home, if so deactivate and enable the other app and then enable swipe home.

Not sure what swipe home is? It's not listed under apps, I usually press the middle button to get to the home screen

Screen Balance (which adjusts screen colour balance/tint) and which I recommended in another thread creates an overlay.
Certain apps will not function properly unless SB is turned off.

It's not a stock app it's a downloaded app from the play store.
I usually turn off off all the apps using it and turn it on after... It's a frustrating issue but what are you going to do.
If it's bothering you find a good Rom, for example Superman Rom, Overlays was removed as it's too much if s hassle

It has nothing to do with any of that, it's Google's fault. You can flash a fix which is in Phoenix rom thread or go back to a previous stock rom

Sorry, I didn't make myself very clear. Screen Balance is an app, separate to the UI's adjustments.
I had the same overlay issue, what I did that Ive disabled all the apps altogether, and switched them on back one by one, discovered that an application called Swipe Home Button Ive installed was responsible,so I have uninstalled after which everything was normal.
Is it safe to turn off the overlay for the system installed apps? I have turned off the overlay for all other apps that I have installed
The app that was causing me this problem after this weekend's AT&T software update was Bing. I Uninstalled it and all was fine.
How I finally fixed the "Screen Overlay" problem on my S7 edge.
The easiest fix, only full fix, I have found is as follows. When the screen overlay screen opens in settings, just turn everything marked on to off. Which by the way is the only thing you can do on this screen. Since I did all my apps, even the ones that weren't working, are working as they should. Hope this helps someone.
As Richie and Monigote stated, flash the screen overlay fix from Phoenix ROM. LoL pay attention please

even when I tried to turn overlay off for all apps mine still was going wrong and I couldn´t use some apps...the only way I got this fixed was making a reset (from the configs options it self) from all my configurations, just configurations, not all data in the phone, it works fine for now...
now I´m with problem with my mobile data connection, I don´t know if it´s from my brand or my phone...

The message about overlay detected i have seen and experienced a number of times.
BUT the only time this has occurred is when i was using SideSync
i.e. I am using it to Remote control the device using my PC
or am using my PC to display my Phone within my PC screen (So i can use my phone while using the PC)
The warning was being presented by some apps because SideSync was overlaying the screen to mirror it to my PC screen)
As soon as i disconnected this message stopped.
Not am not saying your using SideSync, But any other app you have installed that can mirror / allow remote access or displaying your phone screen on another device like PC may be causing the problem

Did Pokemon enable the game overlay?
Small controller icon that comes up when games like Pokemon are playing - that could be your issue.
Settings / Advanced Features / Games / Games Tools = disable
