Easiest way to move apps to SD card. - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone know the easiest way to free up internal memory that way? App2sd says it isn't compatible. I'm sick of always running low on internal when I have 18 GB free on my micro sd. I tried the method that someone posted in the forum earlier about editing the text files but no luck.

Try link2sd
you can either move your apps to sd card
or you can make a partion on external sd card and install your apps on it

I tried it too and it said data/apps/ isn't mounted or something like that.

yup - I, too, have not found a way. my only "work around" is by changing the directory location for my pics/vids to be saved to my mnt/external1 rather than storage/sdcard (moving music to the mnt/external1 helps as well).
but this really was never an issue for me until I installed safestrap and slapped on a custom ROM. however, once I moved the custom ROM to the stock slot, I was able to free up my memory again.
I don't think this will solve your issue, but hope it helps.
edit, BTW, I noticed that you still have bloatware and using juice defender. this phone does not need juice defender (in my experience). removing bloatware (if you don't want to go the custom ROM route) can be done via p3droid's app on the market - and will free up lots of space.

I use Juice Defender mainly to limit my data transferring not so much for my battery life and I have all my bloatware disabled right now thanks for reminding me I need to go into titanium backup and remove it

there is a feature within the phone's settings to limit/restrict your mobile usage. also, you can get e-mail/text alerts when you reach certain mobile data triggers (50%, 75%, 90%). also, I think VZW has a widget that displays your data usage. I don't use the phone's settings or the widget, as I am able to keep my data below my threshold of 300MB/month.

Ya I don't use the phones data limit settings because juice defender is just easier. I use the vzw data widget all the time.

I use rom toolbox for gmusic. Maybe this will help with whatever app youre trying to get to the extsdcard. After i install gmusic ill download one song, that allows for gmusic to make the "music" folder on the internal sd card. I then make a folder on my ext sdcard named "music". In rom toolbox if you long press it will give you a lot of options, go to the last one which is "create shortcut". No navigate to where the app stores it's data, for gmusic this is data/data/gmusic/files, In this file there will be the music file the music app created when i downloaded the first song. Delete that folder and click the create shortcut. This has worked for me flawlessly on this phone and gmusic works as it is supposed to.

I have cm10.1 and link2sd does work not the move data to SD but the link does

yup, I was I in the same boat - until I figured out how to install the ROM on my stock slot. I'm sure you've got something stuck on your storage/sdcard directory (tip: this is not your external micro sdcard - that is on mnt/external).
also, given that the bootloader has been unlocked, SS will go by the waste side (it was/is a great app/tool). so I would suggest flashing everything back to stock and use either p3droid ROM toolbox for the Razr M, or install one of the ROMs posted here.

Well I had clockworkmod and CM 10 on it and everything was golden and then I was an idiot and decided to take the OTA. As soon as I upgraded to 4.1 .2 everything went haywire I couldn't Flash Recovery I couldn't use the Razr m tool and now I can't even install safestrap. Safestrap was my last priority and it won't even work

Makes No Sense!
So I really don't understand why everyone wants to move apps to their sd card. If the only thing that you actually store on your internal memory are apps, app data and the pictures you take, and put the rest on your SD card. Then for me then the almost 4GB of internal storage that is available seems to be plenty, I have about 12GB of music on my SDcard but it still works the same. How many of the apps that most people have are just redundant, or unused...? That is my 2 cents for the day!

HTC HD2 512 running out of space?

using HTC HD2 512MB version, with MIUI.COM installed into the NAND
Questions:
1) I went to setting, and check the disk space free for the phone, adding up the disk space used, and free space, I only have 250MB in my phone? Why? How do I see 512MB in my phone?
2) How do I make the SD card the place to install all applications? like making it default?
3) When an application has been installed onto the phone; it says "30MB on Phone" and I hit the button "move to SD", and after moving, it says "140kb on SD" - what happen? Does it mean that it couldn't move the application from phone to SD? Or file size reported incorrectly?
250mb is a lot of room still left on your device. i only have 73.5mb in my system and i partitioned my sd card to 1gb so i still have 686.1mb left for data.
a great tool to know what apps can be moved to your sd card is appmonster. i personally love the app and have the pro version. it will tell you what apps can be moved safely as well as create a backup of evey apk file you install. a lot of other features as well. im sure there are other ways of doing this but i'll stick with this app instead.
I think you have misread my post; I have using HTC HD2 which is suppose to have 512MB in the phone,
but when i go into the system setting and take a look, adding the used up space + free space, both of them adds to be only 250MB! where did the 256mb go to?
Thanks, I will try app monster, but please let me know how do i utilitise the whole 512mb? It seemed that I'm only using 250MB of the 512Mb in my phone
yes i thought you meant you had 250mb availible after you installed your ROM. also there is a app called Move2SD Enabler (root only) free in the market that will allow you to install to your sd card by default. to answer your question that you only have 250mb total it would seem this is wrong in some way. i mean if that was true you wouldn't be able to flash almost any sence ROM because they almost are always over 250mb. what miui ROM are you running and how large is that ROM? all i could think of is you partitioned your phone incorrectly but thats really just a quess so my advice would be to wait for someone with more experience. sorry i couldn't help out more.
Sense rom? I'm using MIUI rom, which is about 78MB when download from the website;
I wasn't saying that's what you are running only that if your device only had a total of 250mb that you wouldn't even be able to flash a sence Rom. Have you tried to look at a app that will tell you how much space you have as a way of double checking the numbers you've gotten?

You have 512 but your Rom and system files are installed on there so you dont have much leftfor apps
You need a Rom with apps2sd support and you need a ext partition on your SD, cwm will partition for you, use this Rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010498 there is an app on there to move dalvic cache and apps2sd

your question was answered earlier as you already have titanium "BACKUP" then use it no data will be lost
and also THIS page will help you out alot
Use miui backup its pre installed back everything up, install new Rom format SD via cwm (back up everything on SD first pictures videos and stuff and your miui folder) when you partition it using cwm it will wipe your SD install new Rom, go to the apps2sd GUI turn everything on, then go to miui backup and restore everything

thanks guys for helping a complete newbie!!! the official miui tutorial should include this info too!
btw, from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010498
it says:
Choose EXT size (Maximum is 2048Mb) and Swap size (Recommand is 128Mb)
but there's a select to choose 4GB as EXT size........should i go with 2GB or 4GB?
I think my microSD class 2, which is way too slow for this; I've to get a class 6 or 10 one.
I tried to use 1GB ext, and it's working perfectly now; even with class 2 speed!
Stick to 1gb you'll have problems after that

Hi
1024 MB with 0 MB swap is all you need.
Any more will possibly give you problems.
0MB swap? i used 258 or 128,
is there an easier way to change swap to 0MB?

Freeing up space on the Tab 16GB - which looks more like 13GB than 16!

Looking at the tab 16GB - when I check in storage - it shows only 13.1 GB total available - so it looks like almost 3GB are 'gone'
Has anybody else have the issue?
Is there a way to free up space?
Rest of the space is used for operating system

In short, no. You have a total of 16GB of storage, not 16GB of free available user storage.
So, out of that 16, 3GB is partitioned off for the OS, hence the other 13GB is what is left over for the user.
Is there any of getting most of the 13GB my tab says that there only 4gb left but i cant find what's using it all
A lot of big games usually stick stuff in the /android/data directory thats where i normally find the data usage growing from.

You can use the "Factory Data Reset" in the privacy settings, it will keep root etc... But will nuke everything on the device.
And I mean everything, SD data, everything, it will be how you got it when you first turned the device on out of the box.

Just download disk usage from the play store. It will give you a graphic representation of what is using your storage.

As said above, it's a total of 16GB of space.
AndroZip is really good for finding space hogging dead folders...
I find that when flashing roms, my Spotify local files get forgotten by the app so have to be removed manually, as is the case with many apps....

Am on a custom rom it reset my tab but didn't do a thing to give me my space back Ill have another go. I cleared must of the stuff of my self but there's still a few gb i just cant clear
I can confirm this.I am also on CM9 and doing factory reset didin't changer a thing.
But here's what i did to get rid of the unused data :First open file manager HD and then on options (upper right corner) hit the disk analyze
(or something simmilar...translated from Greek). On trhe upper right corner it shows you the available space on your "sdcard".Now connect it to the pc and delete the unnecesary files .
P.S. if you had early gameloft games installed, they created a file called "gameloft" on your sd and when you deleted the .apks the downloaded game data was still there. So if you dont play games as you say delete the whole folder (if any !).
Hope i helped.
Perhaps the fact you're on a custom ROM is why this is not working for you. I'm using a pretty much stock setup.

The only way option in your current situation I think, is for you to have a totally fresh install.
Flash a stock ROM, do the reset, then flash what ever ROM you want, back on to the device ( Or stay on the stock flavour).

I have followed the tut, used the mini partition app, and created the FAT32, created the mount script, restarted the phone, and I still am losing the icons off the desktop and the keyboard is uninstalling itself.
How can I check if the items I moved to SD, are actually on the partition, and how can I select that partition as the place to store moved items from now on.
THanks for all you help guys, I am very greatful

Hmm..
About the icons on the desktop,
I think u shud readd again on ur desktop.. then try te reboot ur phone again..
And if u want to know that the apps has already moved to partition or not,
Connect ur phone to pc.
Open mini partition.
See the partition (the FAT32)
See the "used" column.
If its still "0", then ur apps still not moved to partition.
If its not "0", then its already moved.
If u already created the mount script, then the apps shud be moved to the FAT32 when u link it 2 sd.

I don't think you can have a working ext partition without the phone having a different Kernel at the least or a different ROM (I'm using stock ROM and DoomKernel, with a 1GB ext4 partition for reference). Normal Apps2SD is possible since 2.2 but I think your Kernel/ROM has to support anything more advanced.

Is my free space being reported incorrectly on 16gb Nexus 7 model?

I keep running out of space on the 16gb model of Nexus 7.
I'm wondering if when I rooted something happen with the package that was used?
I read that it has happened before but not sure how to verify.

I had the same problem. All I did to fix was using the Nexus 7 toolkit, I just stock+unrooted back to factory image. Now my storage settings read 9.3 gb available. Yea I lost all my previous data but now I have that extra space I paid for. I think the problem is a 8 gb image was somehow flashed somewhere.

A factory fresh Nexus 7 will report around 13.xx GB free. The rest of the 16gb is used by the system and pre-installed apps.

Sorry, I haven't forgotten about this issue, just got distracted because my Asus TF300T got an upgrade to Jelly Bean and the OTA failed. Dealing with that.
I'm probably going to go back to factory stock but I wanted to make sure I am really having the same issue and that I don't just have a stuck hidden file taking up the space. It has been suggested that I use ES File Explorer to do a SD Card Analyst to be sure.
When I ran that, you can watch it count each file's size and the total used space being calculated on screen. Funny thing, which leads me to believe I do have this issue. It stops counting at 6.5 gb but then stops counting and then you see a total, which is saying I have used 12.5 with 1.5 gb available. Which would bring to the correct total of about 13.5 gb. Remember, when they say you have 16gb, you will see total available about 13.5 because of the index table taking about 3 gb. so 13 + 3 for the index comes to 16gb.
So why did it abruptly stop when counting at 6,5 gb, because that's really all I have used. So the total space saying I used 12.5 gb is bogus in my opinion and I have one f those bad firmwares installed.
That's my conclusion so far.
But of course I want to be perfectly sure.
Can you recommend some other tools to count what I really have and not rely on the system feeding me some bogus information because of a bad firmware file?
Thanks!
Rob

The app DiskUsage will show you where your space is being used.
OK guys I'm here to report that I am a hog!
I downloaded about 5 Disk Usage apps, some good and some not so good.
The better ones worked with my brain, mostly because of the visuals. I the end, it was the one that did not use graphics that was good for me.
I had reported back to some one else in PM, that I just am not used to having to limit myself on how many apps and media i can have.
Here is what I wrote:
'My phone (Samsung Galaxy S II SPH-D710) came with 32gb and I have a 32gb external card installed at all times. The Asus TF300T tablet came with 32gb and I have 2 32gb external cards installed at all times. (The Asus can support 3 external cards. 1 micro sd card, 1 standard sized sd card and 1 standard usb slot which can handle a USB memory card.
Now comes the Nexus 7 with a internal max of 16gb and no external memory slot. I guess I could and have mounted a USB to memory card, but you can't leave that in because it dangles off the usb cable (not practicable).'
So you see, its no longer possible to keep that same amount of data on the Nexus 7.
I was trying to make all 3 devices be identical, I see I can't do that now.
Thanks to everyone for helping me figure this out!
Rob

I'm having a similar issue. Though, it seems to be reporting as if I have the 8GB and not the 16GB. Android reports that I have 6GB free.
After some issues, with CM10 and other flash adventures I flashed stock. I'm still rooted. When connected to Windows, it only sees 6GB free as well. Everything's cleaned out and formatted. Completely clean device.
Ideas?
Have you tried installing the factory image?
On mine the nandroid backups were what was taking up a lot of space and not in the lil colored bar storage thing, I'm not sure about the numbers reading accurately Cruz I always use a root a to tell me how much space I have and hardly ever open that window in settings.

Mine does the same. Downloaded 3g then shows 8g left. Delete 8g file still shows 8g left. So went to settings/storage clicked Downloads the 8g was showing there.. I guess that I had downloaded it. I clicked the box on the left it was gone just turned it off and back on now shows 11g free space. You DONT have to factor reset ever...

Can you explain more on what you did here?
I keep getting "insufficient storage" when trying to install or update some apps. (YouTube & Google Drive won't update, I can't install Slacker Radio or an app I downloaded from XDA) ... but some other apps seem to install fine. Seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why some apps install & others don't.
I have a rooted, unlocked 16gb N7 with Stock ROM. The storage screen in settings shows 13.24 total, 8.11 gb available. When I do SD Analyst from ES Flie Explorer, it gives me same numbers...13.24 GB total, 5.13 GB used, 8.11 GB avail.
So how is there insufficient storage? I've cleared cache of Play Store, rebooted, still same problem. I don't have auto-update checked, There a "fix" in Lucky Patcher ... that didn't work either. I don't want to have to flash the factory ROM...I'm ON the FACTORY ROM.
What am I missing?
I had the issue and I did not have enough time to root my device to run sdcard analysis. My problem was badly written apps like Aldiko Book reader making a copy of my 5 gigs of ebooks into a hidden folder for its library (it did not remove this folder even after uninstall. I had to remove the books from the 'library' manually after reinstalling the app. It is a problem of both the developers and the OS. Developers should appreciate that that we have limited space on our devices and not make redundant copies of data (I like keeping my original folders) and Android should provide native option to completely remove all app data and preferences on uninstall.

Running out of space
Happy Thanksgiving. Hope you and yours have a great holiday
I almost permanently bricked my tablet and thought I'd share my experience. Hopefully you can learn from my mistake. When I flashed from 4.1 to 4.2, everything went well. I liked the new update except the most useful app I use Stickmount wasn't working with Jellybean. Being impatient, I decided to try another app, Nexus Media Importer, that was suppose to allow USB flash drives to work with the Nexus 7 with / w/o root. It did work well. I didn't like the interface and it had some other issues I didn't like. The user could not write to the flash drive.
In the mean time, Stickmount did get upgraded. It works well but doesn't play well with NMI. With Stickmount, you can see the files via Root Explorer and have complete access to the USB drive. But with NMI installed, that function didn't work. I tried to freeze NMI using Titanium Backup but nothing worked well until I deleted NMI from the tablet. I used a work computer to copy the items on my flash drive to the computer and reformat my USB drive and then recopy back to the flash drive. The files showed up on the flash drive using Stickmount but I couldn't get them to play at all!
When I got home, I tried to re-flash the update rom I downloaded from the forum. That's when everything went to hell. The table bootlooped and I couldn't get it to reboot into bootloader. I finally got it to boot into bootloader. I tried to connect my tablet to the computer using Wugfresh's program but couldn't get the drivers to recognize the tablet! Great, a brick with the battery running low! Luckily, I was able to get into bootloader and reflash the 4.1 rom that a friend gave me last week.
I thought I was in heaven. Can you image, no computer drivers so the table has no computer support, the battery running low, and soft bricked! My computer chair had brown stains!
Once I got it up and running, the tablet automatically updated to 4.2 and I still maintained root. I was able to update completely to 4.2 but stayed up until around 12:30 am last night.
This morning I thought I had better do a nandroid backup and everything went well until it got to the point of backing up the user data. The nandroid stopped saying there was an error during the user data backup. The tablet runs well but I have 11.26GB in Misc data that I can't account for. When I flashed the rom, all of my the user files were deleted, my files in the download folder, music and movies. Now even though I have deleted all movies and music from the tablet, I am getting a message "Storage space is running out". The total space is 13.24 GB.
I'm still looking for a solution.

SD usage

Hi guys,
I have an issue with memory space on SD.
When I check usage in ES explorer or in android I can see that only 1.95GB is free and 10.97 is used. But when I check usage of /sdcard it is 5.22GB
Where did the rest of GBs disappeared? I tried to find hidden files but there is nothing significant.
How can I found what is using the rest of my memory? How to clean it? I have tried with some cleaning apps
but with no success.
/sdcard is only the storage you see if you didn't root. Android has other files and folders that's not apart of sdcard.

Hi
The 8GB or 16GB that come with the device are just the total.
To these we must subtract that used by the operating system.
In a nexus of 16G, only 11G is available to the user, the rest uses Android for your stuff.
I hope I have helped you and excuse my English, Google translate helps me.
Saludos!
This is why you don't buy the 8GB but also why you should invest on 16GB, they're trying to promote cloud computing.

I have 16GB nexus. Around 11GB is available for storage. I have files in total around 5GB but system shows only 1.9GB free. What is using the rest of the storage?

How is this going to help me? I know I can format SD but I am trying to find out what is occupying memory.
console -> ./Android 2506248 KB -> 2566397952 Bytes -> 2.39GB
ES exp ->Android 1.19GB -> 1275463754 Bytes -> diff=1290934198 Bytes=1.2GB
It seems that amount of memory is some how doubled????
Am I seeing this wrong or?

It'll help by erasing EVERYTHING on your phone so the usage will be quite reasonable.

Why to erase or change ROM? It is enough to format sdcard... but I want to know the reason...
I am having the exact same issue.
I have the 16GB variant, and after a clean Google stock rom flash, it sees only 5,27GB, just like being an 8GB variant.
How is this possible?

bah, I have reading yesterday and today a lot about this but I cannot find a problem. Some people also have this issue.
1. /sdcard/ (along with /root/ directory and other system-level directory)
2. /storage/emulated/0/
3. /storage/emulated/legacy/
4. /storage/sdcard0/
All of those folders have same memory usage and amount of files 3.38GB but yet 8.96GB is being used, and only 3.96Gb free out of 12.93GB.
What is using 5GB of space I do not know....
EDIT:
When I check properties of a Andorid folder:
1.7GB 1826870517
2811 Files 580 Folders
When I check in console:
3584128kB->3.41GB
3392 Files
When I went on file level...
17952kB->17.53 MB
4249006B->4.05 MB
4934876B->4.70 MB
So directory usage is double then file usage.... how is that?
Hello Rajnus,
Since it seemed that we were the ONLY ones having this issue with our device, and no solution could be seen @ the end of the tunnel, I have sent my LG N4 to LG for service.
The verdict was that the memory chip on the main PCB was faulty, and they replaced it under warranty. I sent it to LG in the morning, and received it the same day in the afternoon.
Phone works flawlessly now, I suggest you take this step.
All the best!
Txn for the info.
Did you got a new phone or just new memory?
Sent from mobile
Nope, unfortunately I did not get a new phone, they just replaced the main PCB, which, of course, affected the device IMEI as well.
Well, I will return to stock ROM and return it to the shop. There is big chance to get a new one because in Austria they do not bother to repair phones...
Sent from mobile
I have wiped whole memory and it seems fine now. Maybe it was problem in ROM or something....but I will keep my eye on it

Your issue is described below and was not faulty hardware:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2033692
The op could be running into the same thing, if I understand the problem correctly, or there are cwm backups taking up additional space.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I already tried the described methods the night before taking it to LG without results.
I even installed AParted to check overall available space, and it too showed ~5,9GB.
I suppose that you have root and custom recovery. Did u check how much space takes all of the backups? info about it is no avaible from android. Just check in recovery, If u use CWM, check option "free unused backup data". Give me feadback if it works for you.
edit.
/mnt/shell/emulated/clokworkmod/backup # du -d 1
4659840 ./2013-09-18.06.06.04
4786000 ./2013-09-22.20.47.46
3698344 ./2013-09-25.14.01.48
13144192
Backups where not the problem. Memory usage was doubled in my case.
