Do you guys think there would be any negatives to using the phone without the back cover on and just keeping it in a case like that? I have a TPU case that fits pretty tight even with the back cover off.
I ask because I just got an extra battery that I plan to be swapping out almost daily (as I'm one of those only getting ~3 hours of Screen On battery instead of 4-6 like some others) and it would be much easier to swap them out without having to take the case off AND the battery cover off every time. I also don't want the little tabs on the battery cover getting loosened or eroded if I'm taking it off all of the time.
Do you think this will increase the chances of damage happening when the phone falls? I doubt that 0.01mm piece of plastic does much to protect the phone but thought I'd ask what you guys think anyway.
I was also thinking, what if they made cases that were MADE to use with the battery cover off. If the cases were molded to fit with the battery cover off couldn't they make them even thinner? They could essentially make a case almost as thin as the battery cover itself, keeping the device at 7.9mm but it could give the extra protection of wrapping around the sides and giving the front of the phone that lip to prevent screen scratches :good:
Interesting idea. I just run the extended battery and not worry about it and carry the original in casse but thats doubtful. Do you have an external charger too?

Nfc is in the battery. And one thing i can think of is sweaty palms or drops of water or any condesation going into the phone through the cut outs.

Ahh see there's something I didn't think of, and the reason I started this thread.
The phone will definitely be more susceptible to water/moisture damage as the back cover (seemingly) keeps it pretty water tight. If they made a case that clipped in as the battery cover and then went around the phone like a normal case that would be optimal.

What do you have running in the background that you are only getting 3 hours of screen time? I nearly got 6 the other day.
Extended battery not an option? Thickness is a little more but it curves in hand so not bad. Dont have to remove back cover either.

Not really sure, I'm constantly holding "home" and closing any open apps, and don't have any 3rd party apps even installed yet except for facebook, instagram, and a few games.
My shortest time has been 2 hours 40 minutes and longest has been 3.5 hours on screen time.
I think it's my location, I get really low bars/service in my area, and on ALL of my android phones I've been about an hour or 2 behind on "on screen" battery life than what others get (happened on my HTC One X, GS3, Note 2, and now GS4)

Is the liquid damage indicator normal? If so, swap it out with your provider. If it indicates liquid damage then see if there's an out-of-warranty replacement option and cross your fingers.
You could try drying it out with rice or silica dessicant. It might take a few days. Got any picts?

Put it on anything that radiates heat, nothing extreme but something that is somewhat warm to the touch. Refrigerator works well, also a PC, DVD player left running, etc.
Leave the battery out for 24-48 hours and see if it dries up the moisture...
Dry heat will help but be careful in case there's something that produces humidity nearby. I wouldn't leave mine on an appliance in the kitchen. I'd opt for an actual desiccant like silica. If you have a new jacket or pair of shoes you can find a packet in there. It's a long shot but rice also works in a pinch.
If that fails I'd send it to the OEM and play stupid. I don't think there are other LDIs in the device but if there are, I don't believe your provider would charge you a replacement fee because you checked the only one that's accessible. Just check it out with the respected technical department you talk to before sending it on, or ask a retail rep if your provider has a store or kiosk at a nearby mall. Just say you normally keep it in your pocket or in a protective case and boom, screen got messed up.
Same thing happened to mine, def the computer or fridge is a great way to get rid of the water. But only dry heat!

Some people have heated the (electric) oven up to 40-50°C and put the phone there, but I would recommend that only if any other method doesn't help..
Dry rice or silica dessicant. Take out the battery and stick it in there for a few days and it will be good as new.
Don't heat it, it won't work any better than this method.
Well I let it dry on top if my cable box and I happy to report all but four very very little dots dried up. I've learned my lesson and will only be doing dry installs for now on.

Some of these clear body shields are wet-applicant. They come with a little thing of liquid adhesive that you apply first. I've been around phones long enough to know that they don't play well with water, so I've steered clear, but I know plenty of people who don't have issues with them.
For the record, every wet-applicant protection system I've ever seen explicitly states that you should only apply it with the battery out and leave it out to dry for ~48 hours (to prevent exactly this).

Haha, very creative. I wouldn't even think to use a cable box as the heat source even though I've been running one of those laptop cooling fan bases upside down on top of mine to vent the heat that was killing hard drives.

I would highly recommend picking up a cheap backup - you never know when you'll need it. Typically you can just snag the cheapest prepaid phone that T-Mobile offers, they usually have something for $20 or less. Toss the SIM it comes with and just keep it around for an extra. That way, if something were to happen with your main phone, you've got *something* to keep you going until you can figure out a replacement.

yeah, and if this is not your first T-mobile phone, you can just go back to the old phone for a day or two while you wait.
Mine had the same thing from a paper cup leak onto the table my G2 was sitting on. It didn't resolve with the rice/heat tricks but T-mo switched it out under warranty. No down time because they ship the replacement and you send the defective one back in the same box.
Get closet dehumidifier. It's at Walgreens in the hardware section. It comes in a plastic tub and you put it in your closet to remove moisture from your clothes. They're little white beads in a basket with a cup underneath to catch the moisture. Put your phone in an enclosed space with that.
If the water was clean it should leave no residue. If it was soapy then you will probably have marks left over afterwards

I always found the 'flimsy back cover' issue rather silly. Its easy to replace anyway should it break. It fits perfectly and its quite resistant to scratches.
When we get criticism for it remember.. Its not fragile glass (not naming names, but we know who uses that, and what a huge pain it is to replace..) and its not a unibody, easily scratched and expensive to replace.

Yeah, I am also wondering that why everybody is so worried about the back cover. I think it is quite firm and sturdy. Not easy to scratch.
Also if I happen to scratch it I can always by a new one. So why to use some back cover? Maybe to cover the camera but most back covers don't give much extra protection to the camera.
Only complaint for this back is that when you get sweaty hands I think the plastic somehow sucks the moisture in it and even after i get clean hands the back cover feels a bit..smuggy

Yesterday I went to the store and had a look but the flimsy/cheap feeling of the batter cover was the biggest turn-off for me. After seeing the video I feel better but still, I would like to see something more sturdy, like a metal cover. The closest thing I found discussed here is a metal-plated cover:

Big thanks for this video, i was thinking of getting a few backup batteries from ebay (since it's cheap and i drain the juice like water), but afraid of breaking the back cover pins when i change the battery frequently, since it look so "skinny".

I've been swapping batteries once a day for the past 3 months and my cover is just fine.
Still not quite convinced
I want the Galaxy Nexus but the back cover makes me cringe still. Does the fold line at 0:16 not worry anyone else?

I was so anxious about dropping\scratching my phone that I bought this huge case from amazon and now I've realized....Using a case just ****ing ruins this phone, it literally becomes a working brick (literally) also its well known that its probably the thinnest phone around, i mean forget the case yo. Anyone else agree?

I have had an Evo, and an Evo 3D previously. Both of which I never used a cover/case on.
Then I got a small clip on case for my GSIII, but really dislike the bulkiness that it adds to the phone. I keep toying around with it, taking the case off, then putting it back on. I really am thinking of going caseless. But I do need to find a good screen protector. If I decided to do that.
I'm still debating, every time I buy cases I end up taking it off with in a few days...I already got a screen protector and I think that's all I need.

You don't have to get a giant otterbox, I have a tpu case and I think the little extra size to the phone is perfect and you get a little more protection from dropping.

Yeah TPU cases are good. Not really big but do give some protection. I'm looking at one of these: www.cruzerlite.com

I ended up buying one even though I don't like em because the phone seems a bit slippery to me and want to avoid dropping it.
Either way, the tpu case I bought isn't that bulky so I'm ok with it.

This is my solution to the whole thing. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1645709 It focuses more on the screen protection than the case itself, so I'll sum it up here too.
I have found XO skin to be the best pick of wet install protection. Their skins cover any device so perfectly edge to edge that they virtually disappear. Other companies like ZAGG say they have "features" like the "orange peel effect", and that due to the fact that the Galaxy Nexus has a curved screen the shield needs to be smaller to accommodate this and there's nothing they can do. It's bull. They look like crap and it's their way of trying to hide that. XO has a full body protection option that when installed properly offers complete protection from every day nicks dings and short distance fumbles (all you can ask for from a case) that you almost forget is there. And when you do remember you show it off to people, instead of shoving your ZAGG covered phone back in your pocket in embarrassment. It still has a slight rubbery feel under hot heavy use (no innuendo intended), so I put a brand new new cheepo throw away plastic screen protector over it every couple of weeks to solve all my issues. (trust me when I say the XO Skin is completely unnoticeable underneath it. It does NOT look like you have two screen protectors on. Many people didn't believe me) I have been case free for 2 months without a care in the world about it, and my phone still looks wonderful.

I need a case. My hands are small so when I try to reach with my thumb across the screen, the base of my thumb will usually barely touch the screen causing chaos with the touchscreen. Case with raised sides that protect the screen some when dropped keep my thumb from hitting the touchscreen on the sides.
I picked up a otterbox commuter a few days ago it's was a pain to get the phone in and is a bit big but I am happy with the case and screen protector as accidents happen and it's better to protect the phone then pay $600 to replace it.

Thats the point. It replaces the battery cover and adds protection to the screen. Sure it prolly wouldn't be that great for the back but you would have an extra back cover.

find a good case, adn yo're G2G. I know my POP! isn't the thinnest, but I already dropped it onto tile from about 3 feet today. i'm not taking any chances. lol
My phone isn't even 2 weeks old and the port cover has become loose. When I press in it stays in there for 1 second and then slowly rises back out. I checked the port hole to see if there was any lint in there but it's clean. I'm not sure what to do.

I too worry about this. i think its a small flaw to an otherwise great phone. samsung should take a leaf from the Z2's book for this.
So i pre-ordered the wireless charging cover only to cancel it because it wont fit with my otterbox defender case.
If it breaks off you can buy one from here:

might need to stock up on a few for the life of the phone. Ive seen that others have completely removed it from the phone also.

This is the main reason I've gone for the z2 over the s5...i wanted waterproof as work outside a lot and paranoid about water ingress, even putting the phone into a coat that's wet. The flap on the z2 seems far sturdier.

It is a pretty major flaw to the device. Having to remove it each time you charge in the car is pretty cumbersome as it stands, for it to be stressful on a flimsy cover makes it worse.
Perhaps with enough attention, Samsung could offer a recall to replace it with a sturdier part.

You could just bring the fone to the store a ask for waranty replacement ...
Purchased a wireless charger... That should help resolve this design flaw.

Hi all,
I just got my new Galaxy S5 and the first I wanted to do was to take a few pictures underwater. However, after I put the battery on, I noticed that the back cover makes a creaking noise when I push it near the heart rate sensor and I can see the back cover near the sensor going down when I push it. Does this compromises the water resistance of the phone?

I'm thinking that there might be water remnants inside. Water + rubber is known to produce squeaking noise.
I still haven't put the phone underwater. I noticed the problem wheni was taking the phone out of the box. When I apply light force to the area around the sensor I can see the back cover moving up and down and it makes more of a clicking noise. Any ideas?

It could be a part inside is just bumping to another part. Alignment is not 100% perfect, especially the rubber part for water-resistance because it was just stuck to the cover and is originally not part of the cover itself.

The rubber lining on the interior face of the back cover should keep any liquid from continuing its entry to the phone's internals, but it doesn't prevent the liquid from sipping through from the outside. Check out how large the notch at the power button area that you use to open up the back cover.
But you should dry the phone first as is for a few hours to be sure no more liquid could enter. When you're sure that it's safe, open the back cover then remove the battery and dry the phone face up so that any liquid residue will go down, at the same time dry the back cover separately too. And be sure that everything is dry, including the ports, before you reattach the battery.
And if the unfortunate event that the phone turned off when it was wet, do not attempt to turn it on. Remove the back cover and battery immediately and let them all dry for at least 24hrs, focus an electric fan to them if you can, to be sure that you max out the opportunity to dry them. And during the drying process, do not keep on touching them to avoid liquid moving inside.

Hi there, even I have the same problem. I noticed that both the the back cover and the s-view cover shows a slight on the power button side in the centre. I firmly believe mine is a phone manufacturing issue as two cover can have the exact same issues...let see if I can get replacement as its not cover problem. Check the attached pic

It's an alignment problem that I have explained to OP. That rubber lining for water-resistance is prone for misalignment and probably warping too. Rubber is known to stretch due to rise in temperature. If it warped or misaligned to an embossed area, that part will be more elevated than the rest.
I have same problem, but I got used to it.
When I put my back cover on girlfriends phone there is no noise.
Its like the problem is phone itself.
I tested its waterproof capabilities even though the back cover wasn't properly aligned. Every thing was good. No water got inside the internals.

Even though no water gets in, I have a question again. The water does go inside the back cover but it doesn't go as the rubber line which is a good thing (That's how it is supposed to work).
I always wipe the water inside after a bath but if I am at a pool for example and I put the phone inside the water but then I don't wipe the water inside for about, 6-7 hours, would there be a problem?

That part is considered to be harmless to get wet, so it isn't a problem if you do not remove the water there for even forever.
I have one last concern and I hope other Galaxy S5 users can help. When you remove the battery cover, you will notice that the area where the side bezel and the back of the phone are connected, it looks like it is melted in order to prevent water.
However, not all the area looks like it is melted. For example, at the area of the bezel where the volume buttons are, there is a small gap between the bezel and the back part of the phone and I can put my nail inside the gap.
I am wondering if all units have this gap or if my device is faulty. Any help is appreciated.

I have the exact same small gap at the same location, so I think it is normal and is that way by design.

Thank god. I thought I was screwed. Especially because my beatiful S5 has been diving for the days in the pool. Enjoying vacations. Taken with the Galaxy S5 front facing camera
