When my wife got the Aria a couple of months ago, she loved it, and I figured I had finally brought her successfully into the age of smartphones. Now, she HATES it. The reason: The awful proximity sensor, that keeps turning the screen on while she's on the phone, resulting in her cheek hanging up the phone, or making calls while she's on a call.
I actually said to her "Just don't hold the phone that way", before laughing about making an iPhone 4 reference.
There has to be an app to disable the sensor, or configure it differently. I want her to love her phone and get back to playing Angry Birds.
Does your wife hold the phone in an unconventional way? I've never had any problems with the proximity sensor activating when the phone is placed to my cheek.
I hold my phone in my left hand with the speaker pressed close to my ear (the proximity sensor is in the top right corner of the phone) with the microphone end pulled ever so slightly from my cheek. If I want to check your phone, pull your phone from your ear horizontally from pull it down to view the screen.
As for settings, I would try this one:
Go to Settings > Call Settings > Always use Proximity and UNCHECK this option. I feel like this gives better results in regards to the sensor.
*Please note this setting is found under Cyanogenmod 7, and I'm not clear if this is found under the standard HTC Sense ROM.
Note:
Make your wife try hitting the LOCK button as soon she dials her number and hits talk. This should lock your screen and disable the proximity. (Again, im running Cyanogenmod 7 so i dont know if this is true for HTC Sense)

She holds it in the normal way, but since the sensor is on the top right, far from the speaker, and she has a tiny ear, she'd have to hold it in an unusual way to make it work.

I wish. Definitely not in the stock ROM.

Do you mean the power button? In that case, it definitely doesn't work in the stock ROM. I'm glad to know there's a setting in Cyanogenmod, so worst case I'll flash that. I didn't want to get her involved with flashing, since it isn't wife-friendly, but the poor proximity sensor placement, combined with the just stupid move of the Android devs assuming no one would need such a simple feature, isn't wife-friendly either, so I might as well.
I don't understand how on a phone this small, you don't immediately assume that you will have users smaller than average, and assume smaller ears. The sensor on my Rhodium is WAY closer to the center line, and it's more suited to bigger people.
I experience the same damn thing as well - it's annoying!!
I mostly have an issue with hitting the "Hold" button. What I did to fix this was to make the phone "left-handed" which moved the "Hold" button to the right-side and it seems I'm less likely to cheek-press it anymore.
This doesn't solve the issue with hitting the End Call button though. The funny thing is, is that it's hard to replicate too! I can literally hold the phone like 1cm away from my head and the screen won't come on - but once in a blue moon I will slightly adjust the phone on my ear while walking/driving and BAM - CALL ENDED! FRACKING ANNOYING!!!!
I have the opposite problem. I can't gang up without a fight to wake the phone up.

Would love it... but... it wasn't uploaded supporting the Aria's screen size, so it doesn't show in the Android Market for her. Any way to force it to install and run, or to recompile it for this screen?

I have replaced my screen and I have the problem where it will not wake unless I remove the battery :/. Tried this and it unfortunately does not disable the sensor, it only supposedly gives you "control" over it.

system/etc/init.d contains files that contain scripts.
Do I add

Also, before I do this, can anyone confirm that this script won't brick my phone but will do as mentioned - turn off the proximity sensor?
Thanks.

I tried doing it with Root Explorer but it says that the folder is "Read-Only" so I cant create any file in there..

you need root and s-off for do this, and maybe custom recovery. read forum to know how to edit system partition on your phone. i can't write step-by-step manual becouse i don't speak in english =(
Sombody in the know this would be a sought after task.
I, like fmac, would appreciate if someone could give a step by step of how this procedure is done. I'm an Android user but HTC's are a little more touchy then what I'm used to. Rooting is not an issue for me, but whomever writes this up, may want to supply a link on that step for the folks just coming here for the first time. ARIAs have been out for a while and this problems fix is probably going to be heavily sought after.
A few of you have been asking for a howto guide on improving the performance on your devices, and I have listened!
I have made for you all a video guide on how to get your 7.7 flying!

Galaxy Tab 7.7 Speed Tweaks ADW EX [ROOT]
Thanks, some nice stuff in there, even if a lot of it is really a ADW.EX tutorial.
Just fyi, you have a typo in the video description--you say ADX EX launcher.
About Customize Menu--you can reorder (or remove theoretically, but this was buggy for me) the items that appear on the top bar and in the drop-down when you push the menu button. I use this so that I can have Add in the menu, because I keep the top bar hidden and there is no other easy access to add/remove/move home screen pages.

I have to try this when I get home, the homescreen redraw drives me nuts, and its completely unecessary imo!
EDIT - OMGGGGGGGGG finally, the tablet has no effing homescreen redraw lag, thank you Jade Eyed Wolf!
Oh, oh. Just did this and now the tablet won't start!!!! I just get the initial "galaxy tablet 7.7" screen and then it stays black....
Any ideas? The only thing I changed was this
"Add this line to "/system/build.prop":
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=0"
Help!!!!!
can someone post a copy of their build.prop (6810)? Would that help?
I can get into recovery, but rebooting form there doesn't do anything.....
Anyone with any bright ideas?
I can get into recovery, but I can't connect to the device via the pc to get at the files. well, that isn't quite true, I can see them if I use a pgr called DROIDEXPLORER, I can copy from the device to the PC but not back the other way. So I tried to edit the build.prop locally and push it back (using droidexplorer) but the one on the device just stays the same with the edit above in it...
I'm now considering flashing a new FW as the only way to get the tab going again.
Any help?
followed instructions and still couldn't write to sd card with ES File Explorer. Can't tell with homepage redraw... What's bad is that this killed my internet connection. After rebooting, the status bar shows me connected to either my home wifi or my H+ service provider but I can't access the internet nor my local network... Restarting the 7.7, deleting the relevant lines, restarting my router/cable modem (still have internet on my main comp and ipad) all didn't help.
I guess I have to reflash my 7.7.
OK, so after a sleepless night (the little one was on full song) I reflashed my Tab this morning and way hey! It is back in the land of the living.
Pheww.
Jade, I think the hack to keep the homescreen in memory might need to be revisited? I followed the instructions to the letter. After applying the hack the device just would not come to life. It wasn't a case of screen-off, device on either. I plugged it in to a PC and there was nothing. The only way I could get the PC to see it was to start it in recovery.
Maybe it is just a combination of things on my machine and I guess these things can just happen, but I think it might be worth checking?
I'm totally happy with flashing now though
Just thought this could use a bump since it was so helpful to me.

It worked for me (Galaxy Tab 7.7 wifi) so you probably entered something wrong... Actually I realised that after entering "ro." the keyboard inserted a space after the dot, so it looked like this: ro. HOME_APP_ADJ=0 and it is like this: ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=0 see the difference?
I realised right away and fixed it. If I were you I would try it again....
It works for me alright, I don't know if at the end uses too much ram and slows down other things, if it does I'll just delete that line and that's it....
Thanks to Jade W. good idea...

Nope, just tried it again, result dead tablet... My tablet definitely does not like this line in build.prop
So, I would advise caution with this line. Take a backup before trying it or get comfortable with reflashing.

I've not tried it yet, but will probably give it a go today when I get chance.
Just tried, and yes it does work on the s4 with root access. We only have the one file though, gpio-key.kl. Same location though. Find the line that says home, and delete the word wake. Save changes and reboot, job done!
So if anybody else like me is coming from the G2 and 3 you might be missing smart screen.. That little feature that detects your face while looking at the screen to keep the screen awake instead of fading out. I personally felt it a real convenience. I would like to get it back, I pulled the app from my G3 titled wise screen. I installed it like a normal app with success. I used activity launcher to try and launch it, but it fc's. So I'm guessing we'll need root to get it functional. When we do get root is there anyone else interested in joining me on this quest? I would really like to get this one up and running. I can't for the life of me understand why they left it off. I feel like I'm back on ics or jb with out it..

I have to agree with you. I am so surprised they took it out. I spent 30 min on the phone trying to find it. I tried the app the other post recommended, not as good, it will never turn the phone off in the car when the phone is mounted and the car is moving.
I, too, was looking for the smartscreen settings. Was surprised that LG decided to remove it. Will try the above mentioned kinscreen later
Anyone know if Samsung removed it from the S6? They started the feature and it was one of the more useful features they added to Touchwiz. I was glad when LG copied it. Most of the other stuff was junk, but that was actually useful.
That sucks. I wonder if they removed smart screen to keep the screen from running down the battery.

Never really worked for me on G2/3.
I miss this and have found an app on the play store that mimics it. It worked well for me on the G3.
Verizon has this. I disabled it though. It worked great on my G2 for the time I tested it. For me, I am typically using my phone while in the middle of doing something else. So it is a waste.

On Verizon, you can see the service - it is not an app - BUT there are no Settings I can find or know of that actually allow you to activate it or interact with it in anyway. So it is "there" but seems to do nothing and cannot be setup.
EDIT: I used the hidden Verizon menu and found this "smart screen" but when you click on it, it forecloses and crashes. So, it is as if that first part of the services is there BUT the actual functionality is not as using the hidden Verizon menu I cannot activate it and access settings or turn it on to work - and I would think from that hidden menu, we should.

Dunno if you can remove it without root, but you can do it with root. You find system sounds at /system/media/audio/ui. There you should find the sound file regarding power menu, then delete it and reboot and that's it.
@zavag
I try to turn it on to reproduce your problem but In my case, I can not even find out how I can turn it on.
Can you tell me...
How you activated it?
On which build are you?
@Henkate
I think it would be rather embarrassing for Samsung if you can not even personalize a notification tone without major changes to the system.
By the way, even if I do not actually think of TouchWiz. For me it's just ugly and overbloat!
I really don't know how it activated. The phone is new and ... you know ... I was searching a lot of settings in order to setup as I like. I googled it ... I found some infos but it didn't work.
On the other hand I don't want to reset (and most I don't want to root it from now) because I spent a lot of hours to set it up.

Know what you mean! I think if there is really no other way you are at minimum able to backup your settings in almost any app.
Maybe you like to inform about adb based backup solutions like declared here:
https://www.droidwiki.de/wiki/Backup/Ohne_Root
I also found a tool called Ultimate Backup on XDA:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1844032
If you don't have access to a Linux or at least Windoof computer you can maybe search for how to use adb through androids buit in Linux command shell. Don't know if there is a workaround.
But in my opinion it is already poor from Samsung if one must operate such an effort in order to turn off a notification!
