[Q] AT&T S4... Switch to T-mobile S4 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I Have the AT&T S4... should I switch to T-mobile S4? (bootloader issues)... I want to make the move before I can no longer return my AT&T S4... any thoughts? I know the AT&T S4 would tend to have more going on in terms of roms and development, but even well known devs are saying stay away from this version... seems like they dont think it's gonna happen soon at all.

From what I read on the T-Mobile forums they are still trying to figure out if the bootloader is locked like ours

right there with you, i've got 13 more days to return-no-questions-asked, just a little butt-hurt i already traded my lovely GS2 in :crying: should have kept that little sucker around until all this washed over. I would go over to HTC One, as it is developer-friendly, but i just can't bring myself to a non-reparable design as these USB ports at the bottom go after time, no swapable batt, and missing micro SD card (love having my pics there in case phone dies, while it's not the ultimate in security, it's at least a small form of backup). Also, the added screen real estate i think is the perfect phone size.
Really hoping the TMob version can be SIM swapped, might not make it to my return date to get confirmation on this....boo

I am thinking of going HTC one. Cant afford to wait a year for potential screw up where Samsung releases an unlock. There will be no unlock for boot loader u less Samsung or somebody working there leaks it.

Figures... now to see if I can buy the T-mobile version without having a t-mobile line. At&T and Verizon dont allow it. Anyone know if they will let you?

This site claims to have the unlocked US T-Mobile S4 available for pre-order. I have no experience with them, but they are mentioned several times in the S4 forums.
http://negrielectronics.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=s4#.UYDASknD_IU
...and for $70 cheaper than the AT&T unlocked S4!

Nice, thanks! My concern is that they are probably talking about sim unlock which is possible on At&T already, I wish we had someone who owns a t-mobile S4 and can confirm an unlocked or unlockable bootloader.
EDIT: Looks like according to the t-mobile forum theirs is unlocked bootloader. Im hoping we can just get the bootloader unlocked by then but if not.. plan B!

Wasn't your original question about where to buy a T-Mobile S4 without having a T-Mobile line? If so, that site claims to have them. If you are planning on using the T-Mobile S4 on AT&T networks it will need to be sim unlocked. Otherwise, I'm not sure why you are looking to buy a T-Mobile S4 without having a T-Mobile line. As far as the bootloader goes, AT&T is locked, T-Mobile is not, but that has nothing to do with a T-Mobile phone on an AT&T line? Maybe I am just not understanding what you are looking for?

On ATT buying Tmobile version

Hey, sorry if this is discussed in another thread, but I read a few and couldn't find the answer.
I'm on ATT, but I want to have an unlocked bootloader, so if I buy the Tmobile version for full price online can I just put my ATT sim card in there and it will work? Also will I be able to get LTE?

I don't believe it is that easy. YOu either need to get Tmobile to Unlock the phone so you can move it to another carrier or pay someone online to unlock it - I don't think you can just switch sim cards unless you have first unlocked the phone. (I am not talking about unlocking the bootloader - that is something else entirely - TMOBILE probably won't lock theirs like ATT does - but the phone itself is locked to the carrier until you get it unlocked)

Well if I buy it from Negri online it says it already comes unlocked. So since it is unlocked then is it able to be used on ATT, or is it only unlocked for Tmobile?

If you buy it from TMOBILE it is probably locked but there are a bunch of places you can buy unlocked Note 3's - plus yiou can always unlock the MOBILE NOTE 3 either with TOMOBILEs help or thru an online service.

Yes you should. It has the bands to support it. Keyword should until someone with device on hand confirms it.
I plan on walking in Wednesday afternoon to a T-Mobile store, purchasing two Note 3s at full price (one black, one white) and then immediately using them both on AT&T. Actually one phone on AT&T and the other on AIO Wireless (AT&T network).
My history is with Verizon and Sprint so I'm not 100% sure about all the specifics of SIM cards.
I'd imagine I'll ask if its SIM locked, hopefully they say no and I'll be on my way. But if it is carrier SIM locked, I just ask them to unlock the device? Is this normal? Does anyone see any issues with this?

i dont think they will be selling the device alone at full price anytime soon..
i ordered mine from negri and overnighted it so i am hoping to get it wensday/thursday. will post back with results but if it is unlocked fcc confirms which bands it works with so there should be no issues at all.

Yeah I believe in-store, T-mobile requires you to have service with them to buy a phone at full price (even pre-paid service). So you'd have to signup for the cheapest one (I think like $30/mo), buy the phone, and cancel right away. However they still charge you for the first month.
However they should unlock it no issues (though you may have to call - don't know about t-mobile).
This was my experience at a T-mobile corporate store, you may have better luck at a franchise store.

Hi. I think these will precisely answer your questions about 3G/4G compatabilities between all US models (including ATT and TMo) for use in the US and abroad. A lot of people seem to think it has immensely clarified their concerns. It's partially based on FCC filings as well as documents from T-Mobile so is as official as it gets.

Unlocking s4 to Straight Talk

Please excuse my ignorance, I've been doing my best to find some info on unlocking a S4 SGH-i337 AT&T phone, and again please accept my apology if this is the wrong board. I've been doing some research but would like to know if this exact model is still lockable to this date.
I've come upon a great deal on this phone. I use Straight Talk and would like to be able to use it as a prepaid device as I'm doing with my nexus 4 right now.
I'd like to know if anyone could point me in the direction of unlocking this device or if it's possible at all to unlock and switch to straight talk?
Hope to hear some valid responses soon, take care you guy's.
PS: also if unlocked I should be able to root just fine, would it be possible to root to bare Android 4.3 on a s4 much like the google play edition, or would the cm custom rom be my best bet to that?
Thanks again take care!
I'll go ahead and order the phone since it comes with 30 day money back no reason needed!

If I was you i would call at&t give them your imei number and if you have a nice customer service rep they will give you a unlock code or you can go on at&t website and apply for a unlock code and if they approve you after 2 weeks they will give you the unlock code in your email. What I did to unlock my phone was used ebay and payed like 3$ and got a unlock code or you can view many websites from google and look for one to unlock your phone the prices range from 10$-30$.If your switching to straight talk you wont even need to unlock your phone cause straight talk runs on at&t network so all you have to do is go on the website by a new 4glte at&t sim card for 6.99 and pay the 45$ for the service pop it in and your good to go and it comes with one day free shipping. And unlocking has nothing to do with rooting unlocking is being able to use your phone on other networks like tmobile. To run a custom rom your phone firmware in the about section has to be on MDB or MDL.If its on MF3 you can safestrap but i dont know anything about that but if you on MDB or MDL you can look for a 4.3 GPE custom rom. http://galaxys4root.com/t-mobile-galaxy-s4-roms/google-play-edition-rom-for-galaxy-s4/ this is where i got my GPE rom.
Doesn't need to be unlocked. Just buy the AT&T compatible SIM card from StraightTalk

Sorry I didn't get you quoted buddy had an appointment.
So I'd still be able to get lte speeds with a straight talk and use locked att phone with the sims?
That's great news for the future and I appreciate letting me know. I love gazelle now. Good thing I bought that s4 when I did because it's out of stock now. lol I think 350 is a steal for it either way!
As for the rooting part didn't mean to confuse the two, hopefully we'll be able to install 4.4 kitkat to an s4 soon. Though question if I did install a custom rom would I loose some of the features such as IR blaster?
I already have a straight talk sim card in my nexus 4 so I should be able to just transfer everything and my time to my new phone.

Yes you will get lte speeds since straight talk supports lte on at&t network now and it deoends what rom you run if its a stock GPE rom u=you might lose it but you probably could find a app for that but if its a touchwiz rom you will still have all your IR features. And it depends you can try to switch the straight talk sim card and see if you get LTE but i think you will need to buy the new straight talk lte sim card on their website.http://www.shopstraighttalk.com/bpd...&locale=en&market=GSM4&productFamily=simcards

I'm pretty sure the boot loader is LOCKED on AT&T or any other US Carrier, aside from a TBA release of the Verizon Developer Version of the S5. He asked about the Bootloader, not the SIM card slot. The international version, apparently has an unlocked boot loader (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) but will only work at HSPA+ speeds assuming your nearby network supports the speed, otherwise you'll be getting standard 3G speeds and I know for a fact that there's a huge difference. I own the Nexus 5, Moto G, and LG G2 (AT&T) and the Moto G is only 3G. It gets excellent reception when I pop the SIM card in it, but it's definitely sluggish (most notably with web apps, cloud sync, and interruptions in streaming music from Google Music).
I would buy the S5 Unlocked Bootloader in a SECOND if it's hardware supported domestic (USA) LTE bands for AT&T.
**Does anyone know if there is even a variant on earth right now that you can unlock the boot loader on, that also is fully compatible with AT&T speeds?**
Because if not, I'm probably going to get the Moto X gsm dev edition today before midnight (big sale) or the HTC One M8 if I can get my hands on a Google Play Edition, but they've been out of inventory on Google Play every time I check. I simply want the S5 that is unlockable because it has a user replaceable battery, which means adding an extended battery. It also has a microSD card slot that allows you to use up to a 128GB micro-SD card. Honestly, how much better than that does it need to get? Oh yeah, an unlocked bootloader so we can workaround SD-card limitations KitKat has introduced - the details of which I am not fully aware of yet.
Thanks for anyone that responds that can link me to a reputable source to confirm...that or a fellow dev&member on XDA that clearly knows their stuff.
Cheers,
Justin

are you sure? someone please confirm.
It is confirmed that the T-Mobile S5 is bootloader unlocked and can work on ATT network and get ALL frequency bands that ATT uses. Just check out the T-Mobile S5 Subforums.
They already have root, recovery via TWRP or some others, just not a lot of Roms yet. I follow the T-Mobile and ATT forums in case I upgrade from my S4.

I can also confirm that T-Mobile's bootloader is unlocked. I have a T-Mobile S5, which I have rooted and installed TWRP and am running AllianceRom (from the international forum, so you are not limited to the roms in the T-Mobile S5 forum).
I actually also have sim unlocked the phone and am using Straight Talk (AT&T) service. I get full AT&T speeds, including LTE.
Questions about S5, will soon be passing on LG-G2, as awesome as it is.

Thanks for answering guys! I do have another question. I've been looking on swappa.com and even T-Mobile's website and I've yet to see a 32GB version of their S5. Since it has yet to be released, I wonder if it will have a locked bootloader when it is released, does anyone know when the 32GB version is supposed to be on sale? I assume it will ship with 4.4.3 or something. I did not end up getting the Moto X, so it's going to either be the M8 or the S5 and I just saw an article on the internet that the S5 GPe was put onto the play store and pulled very quickly sometime last week. M8 has 32GB, but no user-replaceable battery. S5 has 16 GB but can replace the user battery. I suppose with a fast and large enough microSD card, you wouldn't experience noticeable lag if you used your microSD card to store everything aside from commonly used/accessed apps/data.
Can I just go to a T-Mobile store or online and purchase an S5 outright? Given that it has an unlocked bootloader? I heard that some one people got the Verizon or Sprint version and they were able to use on the ATT network (apparently some of them are unlocked) but apparently having gotten the Verizon version means they can't use T-Mobile ROMs. How much different is the hardware? I feel silly for asking this question because I'm pretty confident I know the answer but it's a lot of money to shell out: doesn't unlocking the bootloader mean you can literally install almost any type of OS or ROM or Kernel to your device? Assuming you can support it yourself or the community has created ROMs that support it?
Last question of the least importance: Anyone running a hybrid HTC Sense from the M8 on their S5? I know there aren't many T-Mobile ROMs for the S5 yet, but I figure this is the best place to ask them since you guys really know what you're talking about.
Thanks everyone! If I DO come across the answers to my own questions, I'll post them myself.
-Justin
BTW! if anyone wants to buy an AT&T LG-G2, I have one in perfect condition that is sparingly used. I'm not going to post on swappa.com until I know for sure what device I'll be buying. However, I am willing to make a listing for anyone that truly wants an LG-G2 so we can make the transaction and I can ship the LG-G2 immediately after everything goes through.

Cheers,
Justin

their is a thread on the GS5 general section on xda that delvs into turning on dormant LTE bands on international devices

Rooting the note 4

So the s6 sucks, gonna get a note 4 note instead. I've been reading all these threads but I'm not sure what variant I'll be getting. I'm on att and want to know if I'll be able to root it and if I'll be able to use custom roms, preferably without using safe strap. Any help/advise would be appreciated.
How about if you go and browse/search Note 4 forums? All this has alrdy been said
I've been, but there's too many forums for different models. The one I think is for the phone I'm gonna get has nothing but a kernel.
AT&T and Verizon variants are not rootable unless you have the Google play developer editions of the phone.

Get the T-Mobile version to run on at&t. There is several threads about why this is your best option.

That's probably not gonna happen since I'm getting it thru my upgrade on att and I'm not switching because I'm grandfather'd in for unlimited data. I can't afford to pay for one out right.
Then there is obviously no question about what Variant you will be getting, it will be the Att one which is as of now unrootable. You will need either a TMo one look in craigslist or an international version.

If that's your only option and want to root I would buy it, sell it immediately brand new in box, and then turn around and buy a T-Mobile version off of CL or eBay as the previous person stated. The at&t version can't be rooted. It has a locked bootloader and it doesn't look like it'll ever be any better.

[Q] Best buy "unlocked" galaxy s5: unlocked bootloader?

I've been an iPhone user for 5 years now. 3G and 5 versions. I am tired of iTunes I would also like to tinker a bit with my next phone. . I have used Linux as my main desktop os for a few years.
Anyways, I'm on a grandfathered unlimited data plan on att. My iphone 5 has no working power button, the mic is defective and the battery is worn.
I work in construction so i was considering the s5 for its dust rating and removable battery.
I spoke with tmobile today and they told me that any tmobile device, even if bought for full price new on amazon or best buy would be locked to tmobile service. They informed me I would need service with them in order to unlock. If that's the case it rules out buying a tmobile version for the unlocked bootloader.
Does the unlocked version from bestbuy come with the unlocked boot loader?
To clarify I meant the model listed as "Sam G900"

Go into settings and in "about device" for the model name. Sam G900 is not a model name.

I'm pretty sure he's just going off what best buy says for the model.
I too am wondering this question. Very disappointed in the new S6, thought it was going to be "the next big thing", turns out they just want to be like apple now.
Side note, where would u recommend buying an unlocked bootloader S5, that has LTE capabilities for att? Or does that not exist in the US? Been searching but coming up empty handed.

I don't have the phone I am referencing. Like mentioned earlier, it's just the model number off of best buys webpage. They have the g900a model and a Sam-g900 for sale. They only sell the tmobile prepaids unlocked at a higher price point.
Is there a reputable online seller of new or refurbished unlocked tmobile versions?
I don't know if I wanna gamble buying used.

Buy a 900f from ebay. There are tons of reputable sellers there, just look at their feedback score. All qualcomm models support all lte frequencies, however they're not activated by default. There's a guide in general or q&a which shows how to activate all freqeuncies

Does the 900f come with unlocked bootloaders? Is there a way you can identify if they have an unlocked bootloader without physically checking the phone just don't want to spend hundreds of dollars and kinda get stuck with a phone that's not what I wanted.

I just purchased an unlocked GS5 G900T (Tmobile version) from eBay yesterday, and should have it by the end of the week. I've purchased my last 3 phones from eBay, and all have been true to the ad, and in excellent condition.
You do need to study the photos closely though, and make sure the seller has good feed back, and a lot of feedback (I never buy from sellers who have only a few ratings and/or using a new account).
I got this phone to use with ATT and wanted an unlocked bootloader. Kinda wish I knew that you could activate the frequencies on the 900F though, as it seems like most of the development is for that model. Oh well, as long as I can root and have a few choices of ROMs, I'll be happy.
I'll probably be using some sort of stock based rom on this phone (for a while at least).

ok cool, thanks for all the help!!
I did not know that T-Mobiles Galaxy S5 Came with unlocked bootloaders. I am just going to get one from them since T-Mobile and ATT run on basically the same LTE Basebands and LTE will not be affected as much as the international version when i'm on ATT's network

didn't read the rest of the replies but cricket...they sell it with unlocked boot loader, and you can sim unlock after six months...but they are owned wholly by att so you'll have att's reception and reliability. Of course your unlimited data would be history but crickets rates are significantly lower than most other mvno carriers
Edit: the model no is sm-g900az

I called bestbuy.com customer service. The customer service agent was no help. No additional info than what's provided on the webpage (actual samsung model # is what I was looking for).
She transferred me to their technical support department. The gentleman spent about 5 minutes or so searching and couldn't come up with anything more.
I was told to call an actual best buy store and speak with their mobile department.
I called later today when best buy opened up. Sat on hold for 8min before an actual human being answered the phone. They too were no help. The conversation went like this...
Me: do you know which model of the g900 the sku 5760005 is referring to. . The listed model number Sam-g900 with that sku# is not an actual samsung model number.
Them: it's a g900.
Me: no you do not understand, g900 should be followed by one more letter. Is it a g900a, g900t, g900v, g900f, g900h, etc?
Them: it's a g900. What provider do you have?
Me: I'm on att but probably going to tmobile soon.
Them: we don't carry tmobile. I have a g900a. It works good. (they have the prepaid tmobile s5 on their website).
Me: nvm. Thanks have a nice day.....click.
