[Q] Replace 3G version Display with other model? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear all,
I couldn't find any related topic yet with a quick search so I hope I wont get blamed for not finding the correct thread.
Sadly my Display from my 3G Nexus 7 broke yesterday. (A ****ty day for many reasons... not only this one)
Now I was thinking to buy a used or broken Nexus 7 to replace the complete front part.
Does anyone know if I could use just any of the Nexus 7 models to do that, or if I have to stick to the 3G model?
Of course it might be cheaper to buy just a small 8GB version and use that panel.
Thank you for any help regarding that topic.
Regards
Brotsalami

There's another thread somewhere asking this same question, sadly the display of the WiFi model won't work on the 3g model because the screws are in the wrong places and stiff just won't fit right. Best bet is pay Asus to fix it or a local repair shop

I've been scouring eBay trying to get a non cracked screen for my WiFi 32gb. Long story short it's been dawn near impossible to get a "will not boot but has an intact screen" auction for under a $110 shipped.
Contact ASUS, they will do it for around $200 based on my chats with their employees online.

200$ is quite a number. Then I could almost buy a new one. Why do they change the screw position for almost the same product???
Scheiße.

Anybody knows this?
Is the Display of the 16GB or the 32GB without 3G compatible with the 32G 3G model?

Buying a Nexus One from Amazon, a few questions

Hello guys, I have pretty much decided to buy a Nexus One since it's the cheapest Android device with decent hardware. However I have a few questions:
1) When it says 'Unlocked', does that mean it'll work anywhere in the world? I don't live in the USA, also I don't care about Edge/3G as I'll be using Wifi most of the time.
2) Can a device come with a locked firmware (i.e Can't be rooted?), or all devices are rootable?
3) What's the difference between those two below. I prefer to buy directly from Amazon and not resellers. First link says it'll be in stock after 1-2 months, second one is available.
- www.amazon.com/HTC-Nexus-One-Smartphone-Touchscreen/dp/B0050OV01O
Hi bazzag,
i've bougth my nexus one two weeks ago from amazon.com and, as you, i don't live in the usa.
1)Unlocked means that you can use it with any sim and you are not locked to tmobile, vodafone or similar. I'm using mine in Italy and it works perfectly.
2)No, nexus one are all equal and rootable. (I recommend you to not unlock the bootloader and use the procedure for rooting without unlocking the bootloader posted on the wiki, so you don't lose your warranty ).
3)When i bought mine i had the same doubt I'm not sure but one (HTC Nexus One Unlocked GSM Smartphone with Android OS, 5MP Camera and Touchscreen - No Warranty - Brown
) seems to not have warranty, while the other should have it (Google Nexus One Unlocked Phone with Android--U.S. Warranty).
Hope i helped!
The difference is the second one has no warranty and is used. First one I am not sure whether it is used or new, but you will only be finding new units from third-party sellers (some sellers fulfilled through amazon). I do not believe amazon ever sold these new directly, as they were only available from google and some t-mobile stores.
Most of them are unlocked, but some of the carrier specific models are branded and locked to their networks. It's still possible to root and unlock these, but it might also be worth checking with the seller in an email if this is unlocked&unbranded or a carrier-specific model. There are also 2 versions of the phone, one with 3G on the 850/1900/2100 bands and one with 900/1700/2100. Regardless if you're going to use the data connection or not, if you want to take advantage of the better voice quality 3G brings you can check which bands your carriers of choice use.
The U.S. warranty requires you to send your phone to the states, and you should be aware of some hardware faults-the power button can fail due to a poorly designed connection, and 2 of the phones I and a friend have owned developed symptoms where the phone would go into a rebooting cycle when it got to a certain temperature. I would send an email to the seller you're buying the phone from and asking if the phone is used/refurbished/new and what their return policy is if you get a lemon.
That being said, I'm still using a replacement I got from HTC, and I don't have any idea what phone can replace it in the future. It's definitely one of the best android phones for the price.
Thanks for the replies so far.
Z4buz4, can you tell me which one of the links I posted did you buy? And from which 3rd party reseller? Would really appreciate it.
OJ, you can buy them directly from Amazon (On the right menu, choose Amazon when adding to cart). I doubt that Amazon sells used stuff, so I'm betting it's a new sealed device.
It's good to get more feedback though, shipping it back to the US would cost a fortune, so I need to make sure I'm getting a good one.
I've bougth the first one (the one with us warranty) directly from amazon and of course it was new. Mine is a SLCD one, if you wants to know it
ok all the ones on Amazon are new but they do not have a US warranty on them. Also they are all SLCD they and are for Canada. I bought 4 of them and returned all bc they are all Canada warranty. It is Video Tron in Canada that is what htc America said after i gave them my IEMI #..
Alright, looks like I'll be buying the one without the warranty, since I don't need it anyway. In case it was defective, shipping back to the US would cost me around $70! So yeah I'll be gambling here but I still want to get the phone.
I've got 2 more questions:
- I'll probably get one with SLCD. I know that AMOLED has more vibrant colors, however in reality how much difference are we talking about?
- Which decent and reasonably priced case and screen cover you guys recommend?
Thanks again.

1) My first Nexus was AMOLED which I thought was fine but after I recently purchased a new Nexus with SLCD. I notice the font are much smoother around the edge. I don't really care to much about the dark is darker. I care more about clarity in image and text when websurfing which is why I prefer SLCD.
2) As for case, I went with Seidio Innocase II. I had it the first time around and after I got another Nexus I bought it again. I am not using a screen protector because the case is difficult to slide with just a thin layer of plastic.

Second this. Have had this case on my N1 for over a year. Great protection, with hardly any extra bulk. (And I've never felt the need for a screen protector.)
if you want a brand new 100% go to expansys USA
does the one with the US warranty come with a microsd card?
mine just arrived today and I can't find one in the box

IHMO amoled and slcd are both very good. If you want to see the differences between them this is probably the best article you can find (htc desire and nexus one use the same screen):
http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/13/spot-the-difference-htc-desires-slcd-versus-amoled/
When i bought myne i also bought a screen cover and a silicone case. I've never use it I think that the best case is the one inside the box: it's a nice neopreme case (you can spot it on youtube if you search nexus one unboxing) with an android on it.
The screen is made of glass and it is scratch resistent (look at this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfqwKa4bT74).

It should be in the mobile... Open the cover and see if you can find it
nope.. I thought it should be in the phone too.. but nope
guess have to deal with customer service.. fortunate i bought from Amazon itself. shouldn't be a problem
ps. the slcd is indeed better in text but the amoled is better in color i think. (especially the dark color)
So all the phones off amazon are new?? And has anyone bought the one for 269$?

Yes they are new coming with everything. The price went up on those phones used to be $249
I am very interested in replacing my aging HTC Dream as well and have been looking at the nexus one. I'm on the rogers network in Canada though and apparently not all of them work on the rogers 3G network..? I was just curious if anyone knew if either of the two on amazon will work for me, thanks.
Nevermind, I looked into it more and neither of them look to be the AT&T version.
I was doing the same thing now that I need to switch to ATT
I emailed amazon customer service to ask him check the version of their inventory (through the FCC id)
he said he will email me back in 2-3 business days.

Nexus 7 32GB (non 3G) Screen - Yellow?

Hi
I received one of the latest batch of N7 3Gs this week and I'm quite disappointed on 2 counts; the screen is noticeably yellow and dull compared with the screen on my original 16GB and the 3G seems to be a bit fussy about what SIM I use. I'm thinking I might return for a refund and go with a normal 32GB and use a MiFi I already have for the odd occasion I need to use on 3G. I know that the 'yellow' screen issue has been discussed elsewhere in the forum and accept that the SIM slot in my device might be faulty but I cannot be bothered with the hassle of return & replacement through Google Play. If I go this way, I'll likely buy a 32GB locally through Tesco or JL in the UK.
I know this can be a bit subjective but I'm wondering how people find the screens on the current 32GB models, particularly so if they've had the chance to compare with the 16GB model (or the 3G version). Are the 32GB screens bright and vibrant like the 16GB seem to be (I looked at a current 16GB on display in Tesco this morning and that seemed to be the same as my original 16GB and was certainly better than the '3G'). Any comments on this will be appreciated.
Cheers - Y
Maybe im wrong but there i already a thread talking about this color issue on 3G models. Try search forum.

Thanks. Yep, I'm aware of that and mentioned it in my OP. I'm looking for feedback as to whether the current 32GB non-3G N7s have the same 'yellow' screen.:fingers-crossed:
Actualy this can happen in any model, so far.

[Q] How much would You pay for S4 demo unit

Hi i got my piece of S4 but one guy has brand new S4 demo unit for sale.
I've seen pics on the back has simcard slot and microsd card slot. The man told me that this phone is like "wifi tablet" everything works except You can't make a phone calls.
So my question is what is decent price to pay for it?
I was thinking even if phone doesn't work it could work as gps, camera, taking notes and many other price.
So what's the decent price to pay for it ,the price that i could easily sell it in future.
How much would You pay for it?
The demo units are more crippled than just not being able to take calls...
They wipe themselves after every reboot so u can save any data to them etc... Plus they are difficult to update firmware wise.
Search this forum as some other users have e them and have encountered issues.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda premium
Well i thought that i could buy just for parts You know have extra lcd, battery, camera and many others parts
how much is he asking for ??
The question is whether the hardware is actually different from the I9500/I9505 or if all the differences are as a result of the demo firmware. If it's firmware I'm sure someone will eventually get past any restrictions which could make a cheap one of these a good purchase.
He didn't say the price he said he's going to sell to me cheap ,so i'm asking You guys what would be a good price to buy.
If everything works except phone calls so i'm willing to pay $250 but is this to much?
I have no idea what do to with it ,tomorrow i will able to put my hands on it .
One more thing i red an article and one guy said that most of demo units have everything except gsm antenna.
So if that is true the only thing this phone needs is new motherboard and the phone will be 100% S4.
The best thing to do is buy very cheap demo units and them look for smashed one on ebay or amazon and viola 100%
working S4.
So how much $$ would You pay for demo unit of S4
200 or little lesser$$

From what I have been told the radio's firmware has been made inoperable and cannot be swapped to a GT-I9505 version. So unless someone hacks the qualcomm baseband those units won't ever be able to connect to a GSM/WCDMA/EUTRA network.
That's a huge drawback for a phone.

Its worth just manufacturing cost minus usage so 20 bucks or less

Nexus 7 Wifi motherboard on a Nexus 7 3G chassis

Hello,
I have recently bricked my nexus 7 3G trying to update to 4.3. It is in APX mode with no easy solution.
I was thinking about buying in ebay a nexus 7 wifi 16GB motherboard. The idea is to change the nexus 7 3G motherboard for the this one.
I have doubts if the wifi motherboard will fit in the chassis and if all the rest components are the same so all wires and connections and battery will work.
Does anyone have any advice?
Thanks!
My advice is to add those 30$ for the 3G version, if you don't know exactly what you're doing, you might screw them up both while swapping motherboards. Also, isn't ROM (or wherever system is) memory soldered onto the motherboard?
Right now first gen N7s are really cheap because everyone is selling them, I'm sure someone on XDA has one to sell, and you can lookup devices whole history based on users posts.
I don't really understand what exactly is you're trying to achieve by swapping MoBos? Have you done this before?
also have you tried this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41860081&postcount=8 you probably have, but still.
Edit:
I had to re-read you post a couple of times to understand exactly what you're after, and here are my thoughts:
1) why buy wifi MoBo, if you can get 3G MoBo? It would make the whole process much simpler.
2) get a cracked screen 3G N7 on ebay, take it's MoBo and put it in you current N7. Throw away your current MoBo.
3) buy a fully working used N7 off ebay (or swappa). Sell your N7 for someone with cracked screen.
4) buy cracked screen N7, replace screen with your current one, sell it, add 100$ and buy new 2nd gen N7
if you do swap mobos, this might come in handy:
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus+7+Teardown/9623/1
good luck!
I want a wifi Mono because it is cheaper. In a quick search in ebay you can find 16gb Mono for around 30$ or less and 3 MoBos are less common and much more expensive, around 130$
Personally 3 is not a must for me now. When I bought the no this was the only model and I didn't care to pay those extra bucks.
But according to how I use the tablet (mostly reading and video at home) I know 16gb with no 3h is ok.
I have the skills to change the mobo so that won't be a problem at all.
What I want to know is that a wifi MoBo would work in 3 chassis.
Thanks

It seems like the 3g and WiFi have different mobos, it may not fit, screw holes are most likely different.

Hi Mach... thanks for answering.
That´s just my fear. But in ebay there some motherboards with the whole chasis. For example, take a look at these two 16GB and this 32GB 3G. The frame are pretty similar. I have compared them from the photos and it looks the screw holes and connectors for battery, screen, speakers blah blah, are in the same location.
And as you can see, the price is totally different!
I wanted to know if there is someone with some experience could know that for sure.
Thanks!
Can I replace tow nexus 7 ( 2012 3g 32gb ) mainboard ?
Nexus A broken tuche
Nexus B in apx only

Motherboard question - Help appreciated

Hey guys,
My Nexus 6p no longer receives signal, which is caused by a faulty soldered chip on the motherboard. All the service shops I visited can't fix it, they recommended buying a new motherboard instead. My Nexus 6p is the H1512 (International) model. The question is:
Can I put the motherboard from H1511(NA) to the H1512(International) mode and will it work? Broken USA models are selling cheap and I will pretty much try that, if anyone can give me a hint at the possibility of it working out.
Thank you
Graphics card guys having issues with solder have put their cards in oven at 250 for some length of time (I don't remember) to fix the solder to make a dead card work again.

Sorry to say but I can't see how this could possibly be economical or worth the effort. No reason it would not mechanically connect and function but the question is really: will the NA model work well in your location? A quick google of the bands in Bulgaria vs USA says no. No GSM overlap, No 4G LTE overlap and only one UTMS band on 3G (UTMS 2100). Another risk you take is the MB is already toast on the phone you buy (and the reason it was sold for parts). You really need to find a INTL MB for it to work in your country.

Looking for a good motherboard and don’t know which is the best. Don’t worry. Here we are introducing the best motherboard for Ryzen 7 3700X. It is a really impressive launch from AMD and its third Generation of Ryzen chips.
With it, you’re getting 8-cores and 16-threads, with a boost clock speed of 4.4GHz. With some other unique and fastest chip from the Ryzen 3000 series, we can’t wait to see what the future holds for AMD processors.
