I got this phone yesterday and I must say it looks gorgeous. I set It up adding my emails, widgets etc and then experienced a lot of lag while scrolling on the social hub widget, even the Internet browser takes ages to load and struggles while scrolling.
I'm really unhappy now as my gs2 didn't face such an issue and i was expecting this to be smoother considering it has a faster processor.
I don't want to root this phone for security reasons.
Is anyone experiencing this issue and is there a solution?
Any info would be helpful.
Thank you.

What widgets are you using?
I have about 15 icons, weather widget and digital clock wiget on one screen and nothing on any of the other screens.
Hmmm that might be the problem. I'm using widgets on every screen. I've gone a bit widget bonkers! Having said that I had the same widgets on the Galaxy S2 and didn't suffer lag issues.
I have rooted and am waiting for some decent ROMS to appear, I'm sure that will fix???

Hi
Hi friends.
I also notice lag and Im using the stock launcher and with almost no widgets.
Apart from the screen issues that one will notice if he uses the devise for reading.
I had the SGS2 before and the difference is noticable.
Such a pitty for such a promising devise.
I changed screen density and only use one screen with go launcher set to have 7x7 grid size. I have 2 widgets, Weather and BBC News, I use upward swipe to open app drawer and not noticed lag at all when in use but I do get around a 1/2 to 1 second delay when pressing power or home to wake the device. Not the end of the world but would be cool if it was instant like the S2.

It's the same on my Samsung Galaxy S2 and it's never changed so I wouldn't worry about it.
There were some threads on the SGS2 forum about ideas on how to fix it if I remember rightly.
I love my note but i would have to agree that SG2 is faster compare to note . ( that make ppl feel like the note is laggy as they have used SG2 before )
؟؟؟
thank God the device is super fast....there is no lag at all.....just hard-reset the device and enjoy it
Launcher Pro is much smoother on my Note than ADW...
ADW EX is lightning fast with density hack at 240, all the others lagged.
Obviously mine is rooted. Also using Roboto font.
I have lag
I am comparing when zooming out all the home screens and then selecting one. The animation is faster and smoother on a HTC 4G. ALSO, sometimes when waking the phone the screen will flash the unlocked screen for a second before the lock screen appears ie see your messages app then you see the lockscreen and have to unlock the phone. I just reset the phone thinking this would help but it didn't. Coming from the iphone I am sad that everything isn't backs up like the iphone without rooting. This lag is more picky than a problem. I don't understated lag when the phone is so powerful.

Yeah I agree, I don't understand the lag with such a powerful device. I suppose it is possible that Samsung has used cheaper, slower dram in this phone. Even the Plus animation when the phone boots micro-stutters. Of well, hopefully in a month we can get our hands on the Nexus.

That's the nature of Android, because so many manufacturers can use it, developers need to program apps for all of them in mind and seeing they all have the potential to utilise different hardware you can't expect a developer to be able to foresee these things.
What we need to do is just put a request to the developers and ask if they can make it compatible with the Notes graphics card/drivers making it lag free.
This is exactly why virtually all native Samsung apps run fantastic, because their devs know the hardware and drivers hence know how to get full potential.
What would fix this is every time Google releases a version like ICS they should state exactly which hardware will be ALLOWED to run on this platform. But then you lose the openness.
It's a double edged sword, you have to take the good with the bad..
This is unfortunately where apple shines with the iphone because they make the OS and the device. If they just loosened up on their OS a little then we wouldn't be talking here

The Note will ONLY get better with each update/support from either Samsung or our beloved developers.. And that's a one way direction.. O)nly better..
Guys the reason for the lag is the constant downclocking of the cpu to 800 or 500mhz as well as unnecessary services apps running in the background. I believe it can be optimised..

Not really, mines rooted and have uninstalled all uneeded apps. Although adw doesn't lag anymore, other apps do like Facebook and even ES file explorer.
There is a dedicated gpu which isnt utilised for most of the apps which lag, this is the problem at hand.
The iphones been running a sub 1ghz cpu and less than 1gb of ram for long before android adopted them, but doesnt share the same issues.
But as stated it can only get better from here.

Agreed in some respects...
Have you installed AnTuTu CPU master?
I have noticed that when the CPU is operating at 800mhz everything lags.
When I force the CPU to 1400mhz using AnTuTu the lag is present for the first homescreen swipe in ADW EX (DPI 260) then it's smooth as butter.
I have also observed this behaviour in launcher pro.
A guy on here recommended using BetterBatteryStats to possibly locate the apps/background services that are unnecessary hogging the CPU.
Fully agreed on the Iphone performance - but that is clearly due to software strictly tailored for hardware.
Android requires brute force due to software required to work on multiple devices
Gotta say tho my Galaxy Tab 7 (First Gen) with overcome is way faster in general operation than the Note... Until I force the processor to stay at 1400mhz - then it just flies.
Clearly the Note has a lot of potential.
I'm coming from a GSM Galaxy Nexus. I loved that phone...I mean it was borderline weird how much I loved that phone. lol Anyway, I like this phone more. It's blazing fast, the hardware is better in every regard...it's just awesome. Which is why I find it incredibly annoying how sluggish the recent apps menu is. It's sluggish when it comes up and the screen fades, and swiping apps off the menu bar is just sort of sluggish and not fluid like it was on the Nexus.
I've tried it on my friends Int version and on my AT&T version, it performs the same on both. I'm curios if anyone else coming from a Nexus notices this?
I don't know why it bugs me so much (first world problems) but it really just seems like it should be fluid considering how much faster this phone is that my GN (on ICS, sold it before JB)
I actually just remove all apps when I use it just so they vanish fast and I don't have to witness the slow animation of swiping apps off the screen. Unlike my GN it does seem to swipe the apps off faster based on how fast I use my finger, but it still doesn't have the fluidity that my previous precious had.
Just ranting, chime in if you want.
I think is much because of the hold Down on the home button if you run aokp and add the nav bar is faster, also make sure you turn off s Voice double click

Thanks, yeah I disabled S-Voice.
Actually not related to the home button as it does the same thing using nova launcher recent apps short cut

I guess this isn't a common complaint for most of you.
Maybe it's me, but mine seems good. Def not as fluid as my buds Jb Gnex but fluid enough.

Hello,
As the title suggests, I am experiencing a little bit of trouble with TouchWiz stuttering from time to time.
By stuttering, I mean when scrolling across home screens from time to time it will lag. Going to the app drawer sometimes lags and when scrolling in the app drawer it sometimes lags too.
It doesn't stop there; sometimes when I open/close a folder the animation is quite laggy, going into TouchWiz based apps suzh as Phone, Contacts, Messaging etc. seems slow to open (I know you can keep them in memory, but you should't have to on a phone as powerful as this).
The most confusing part is the camera app... When taking a picture there is shutter lag, and the S3 boasted 0 shutter lag, and so does the S4... But there is some lag there too.
Any suggestions on how I can improve performance?
Things I've tried:
FULL Reset.
Regular RAM clearance.
ROMs (which I don't like because they always have something wrong).
Turning off ALL pointless features.
Turning off animations.
Overclocking, which somehow make everything worse on a different kernel.
So I've tried a lot, but not everything. A different ROM is out of the question.
And yes, I know that Samsung under develop TouchWiz which is why it is laggy, but has anyone tried to re-design it? Make it better?
Lag and/or stuttering on a phone that has a Snapdragon 600 and 2GB of RAM is just ridiculous. And I know, the best of phone experience lag... I've seen my mate's iPhone 5 lag; but that doesn't lag all of the time, and that's not even close to being as powerful as the S4 (taking many factors out of it).
Thank you in advance for any and all help, it's much appreciated!
Thanks.

For gods sake don`t overclock, its alleady hot enough bro. Debloat the rom with ROMCleaner and remove all unneeded stuff, link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2348256. This will also prolong the battery.

Relaaaaaaaax... It's only up to 2.1GHz... It doesn't get that much hotter to be fair. I might just completely restore it again, use stock everything and de-bloat the thing!

overclocking is not necessary. its a quad core at 1.9ghz. you're just going to make it less stable and invite issues like stuttering. it may not be lag but stuttering.
also there's no real way to fix touchwiz stuttering you really just need to replace the launcher, dialer, and texting app to help out.

Hmm, I think you're right! I'll reset back to stock kernel and firmware...
Your other point is a great suggestion, but is not possible to my knowledge because of the TouchWiz framework. If you can point me to a tutorial on how to do that, fantastic!
I wholeheartedly recommend 'Next Launcher 3D'. It is smoother than silk. Very expensive on Google Play, but the .apk is a Google search away if you want to "try before you buy"
I know you said another ROM is out of the question but if you have an i9500 then consider checking out Arrow's ROM - He has added his own transitions that make the phone experience feel very fluid, and the ROM is very fast, overall.

you can simply download dialer apps, texting apps, and launcher apps.
i personally use nova launcher, handcent for texting (not the smoothest but definitely flashy and nice looking, better than the touchwiz texting app of course), and i just use the default dialer app personally because i dont do a lot of calling out, i mostly just answer calls. i text more often and use other apps way more often than calling.
this doesnt remove touchwiz, it just fixes the terrible lag that they have by not using things that are built on touchwiz

Agreed, but the issue then becomes what if you want to use the TW stuff. I personally find the TouchWiz 4 x 4 Calendar widget to be the best there is. I see my entire month at a glance without having to launch anything. It even let's you scroll to other month's without launching the App.
I Love Nova and Apex; smooth as a baby's bottom. But I keep going back to Touchwiz because that calendar widget is a functional need for me. Yes home-screen scrolling stutters.
Hello,
So I bought this device a week ago and the lag really bothers me. I noticed this device runs 70+ processes in the background and uses half of its memory on boot!
I remember when I installed cyanogenmod on my original Samsung Galaxy Tab, the thing was flying, even web browsing was several times smoother. Also it gives CPU clock options, and it gave me an option to adjust minimum CPU clock, this way a lot of lag just went away.
Thanks!
No custom ROMs yet. We just got a recovery so custom roms can now be used. Also what little lag I saw went away with the latest update. It is a good idea to get all the updates then wipe and start fresh.

none of those do much of anything to speed up my device overall. just faster homescreen swiping. i've always used alternative launchers mainly for the customizations, whatever speed they grant is negligible since i spend so little time in the launchers themselves. the majority of the apps disabled in that list i've had frozen since root came out. i even refreshed for the hell of it and no difference.
i love the device, but samsung has done some crappy work on the software.

The only issue I see with custom roms is the loss of spen functionality which is really a shame. Without the spen this is just another 10in tab. Samsung has added some great functionality with snote, the air dock, multi Windows.. Etc.
Hopefully we get a de bloated rom soon. But as others have said, the lag has somewhat improved with the latest patch. But I feel where you're coming from, the first thing I noticed when I turned it on was lag. In fact, I should post the gtalk conversation I had with my tech buddy the dash I got it.

a TW based custom ROM won't lose any of the S Pen stuff.
Design
More horrible is the Design of the Firmware. I mean look at that statusbar with that buttons for WLAN , GPS and so on. It looks like some ugly quaters.
I recently bought a Tab Pro 10.1 and I was quite disappointed with the performance of it. For a device that -- on paper, at least -- was really powerful, I felt like the entire experience was very sluggish and clunky.
I wanted to share a couple of tweaks I made that helped boost performance dramatically.
1. Ditch the Samsung launcher. As cool as some of those tiled screens looked, it felt really slow and choppy to me. I gave Nova Launcher a try (I've also heard good things about Apex and Launcher Pro) and was extremely impressed with it. The tweaks that yielded the best performance gains were:
Scroll Speed - Faster Than Light
Animation Speed - Faster Than Light
App Animation - Slide*
* The stock animation on the Galaxy devices [the window that starts out minimized and then grows in size] is very choppy; let me add that the "Icecream Sandwich" option offers even better performance, but I thought it looked a little tacky.
Because the device is running such a huge resolution, these animations still look fine when set to such a fast speed. On my phone (Galaxy S4), I toned the settings down a little bit, because they were too fast. On a huge tablet though, they feel great to me.
2. Tweak the Scale Multipliers
In order to do this, I had to unlock Developer Options. Unlocking this mode can easily be done without rooting. Simply go into Settings -> General -> About Device and click on "Build Number" tab 7 times. This will unlock Developer Options (it'll show up as an entry in your left menu). After unlocking this, go into it and change the following settings:
Window Animation Scale - 0.5x
Transition Animation Scale - 0.5x
Animator Duration Scale - 0.5x*
This settings netted huge gains. The tablet felt so much more responsive for me, especially with regards to animations. In particular -- and perhaps this is a complete placebo effect -- I felt that scrolling (web pages, app lists, etc) was dramatically improved. Sluggish scrolling has always bothered the hell out of me with Android devices. This seemed to help a lot (again, it could just be a placebo, but I genuinely think it helped).
After making these two changes, it seriously feels like a brand new device (okay, well, I just bought this 2 days ago, it already is a brand new device). I went from being extremely disappointed in the performance to blown away by how snappy / responsive everything feels now. I know the 10.1's are sort of lacking with the ROMs we have available, but these tips will help a lot. Please note that all of this is sort of generic advice -- you can find most of this info available on other sites. However, I just wanted to share the changes I made that netted me the most dramatic performance improvements.
I'm guessing a lot of people are probably well-versed in suggestions like this, so hopefully I'm not preaching to the choir.
I hope this helps!
Thanks a lot. I am looking to buy one. but can't decide which one I should get, the 8.4 or 10.1
I don't like that samsung cpu alot. And I think the 8.4 come with snapdragon 800. but I like the size of 10.1. sigh....
Thanks for the info. You're right, just switching to Nova Launcher (and rebooting) made a difference in the RAM usage. Tried your settings, they're nice and snappy. Plus I must admit having the launcher bar at the bottom feels a lot more natural.
I did not believe it really fast .. I do not recognize tablet .. thank you
This worked wonderfully!

The tablet is not necessarily "slow" per se, but it feels slow and sluggish. For whatever reason, stock Android animations have always been terrible. Have you ever used an iOS device before? I prefer Android for about a billion reasons, but one thing iOS absolutely nails is their animations in their user interfaces. Everything on those devices feels as smooth as butter. One thing I've found is that that this is all a matter of perception; for some people, it doesn't bother them at all. For others, it drives them crazy. It's subtle, but once you notice it, it's really annoying. It's almost impossible not to notice if you've used an iOS device for an extended period of time (I owned an iPhone for a couple years). Responsiveness is something that Google has focused on (check out search Google for "Project Butter" for more info).
With every Android device I've used, the animations have looked cheap and clunky. They're not smooth (and never have been). They are choppy and they stutter; the best way I can describe it is like when you're playing a computer game on high settings and your framerate starts to drop. It doesn't look smooth and natural anymore -- it looks inconsistent. Android animations often look like frames are missing.
With the stock settings, go to your home page and start cycling through the pages quickly. For me, whenever it loaded those tiled pages (the thing with the calendar/email widgets, or the digital newspaper page), there was a noticeable hiccup. Successive cycles through the home pages would often feel smoother -- it seems that the device must temporarily cache some of the rendered data for a while. However, when it's of memory and needs to render again, the stuttering returns.
Also, try opening an app. By default, it plays that animation that looks like a window maximizing from a taskbar. That animation was always very choppy for me. Again, it looked like it was missing frames. Using Nova Launcher, I've switched to the Ice Cream Sandwich-style animation (sort of looks like a tube TV turning on), and it feels way more responsive and instantaneous to me.
Again, none of these changes are actually speeding up the device. It's just lowering animation times so that things feel faster.
Fresh owner of Pro Tab 10.1 T520 here :fingers-crossed:
i'm also kinda disappointed, i've rooted, changed kernel for better performance ditch the Samsung bloadware but still kinda lagy
I'm really considering to replace it with Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) i need Snapdragon power
I already had a 8.4 and bought a 10.1 because they are selling them so cheap. After disabling all the bloatware, I think that the speed is just fine, no lags, stutters or whatever. Make sure you really disable everything. To me it's not a big difference in speed with the 8.4.
Hello everyone,
I'm waiting to receive my SM-T520 10.1, replacing a Galaxy Note 10.1 (GT-N8010) broken.
I just tested these settings on my Note2 (GT-N7100). Antutu gives me before your adjustment in economic mode: 17941 And after with your settings. 18476, a real gain.
@ New tricks.
My SM-T525 runs fantastic with Cyanogenmod 11!
I've been hoping to get rid of Magazine UX and the rest of the bloat since I first fired up the device!
Hey guys,
i am about to get a 10.1 and i was wondering if i can use the multi-tasking feature (2 screens on the display) with Nova or Apex launcher or is it only for TouchWiz?
Best regards
I use it with Apex Launcher just fine.
Works fine with Nova too.
I tried these settings, along with cybertronics v5 kernel and graveds rom. I am not disappoint! Very impressive responsiveness and feels ridiculously smooth. Everyone should do this. Thanks!

I am about to get delivery of a 12.2 Tab Pro. Really excited at having all that real estate to play with. I travel a lot for work and can't wait to be able to watch movies on that monster screen. Anyone else here have one of these beasts?
BTW upgrading from a Asus Prime that served well and will now be handed down to my kid
