Wifi Issues - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

For some reason, my HTC One handles my wifi fine...but my S4 is sloooooooow.
The images will show what I'm talking about. Same WiFi connection, same spot in the living room. Any ideas why this may be?
I have the 24mbps from U-Verse and my laptop, iPad Mini, and Xbox are also having no issues, so the only thing slow is my S4.
NEVERMIND, AFTER FOUR RESTARTS IT FINALLY FIXED ITSELF...

Which wi-fi router are you using? I had a D-Link which would not work with the S4 and it turns out that there are compatibility issues between D-Link and Samsug phones. It would work everywhere else, AT&T hotspots, my work w-fi, etc. I had to run out and get a new router. It now works flawlessly.

No problem here, glad yours resolved itself.

first world problems....

Is this a known issue? I just got a S4 and have a D-Link Extreme gaming router and the phone will just not work. I refuse to change my router for a phone as all my other devices have no issues with this router.

It's a known issue in the sense that there are compatibility problems between D-Link routers and Galaxy phones.

I have not really had issues with my 4500. After some deep searching I was able to get it to work with the right settings. So I will keep my router which works on all my devices.

So, that's it; no solution just screwed if we own a DLink router? Blah... lame. What a bummer.

I have a Dlink DIR-655 wireless n router and I'm having the same issues with my phone/router. The issue seems to be with the dlink implementation of wireless N. Force your router to use wireless G and all probs go away.... I know this isn't a solution, because if your like me... you stream video... and G sux for that!
but its a fix in the short term....

I'm using a relatively new Netgear R6300 that has 802.11AC connectivity but can only get the S4 to connect to it on 802.11G - is there a way to change the band frequency to 5GHz so it can support the AC mode? I cannot find any options in the Advanced when connecting to the router.

Anyone have any luck with this? I just purchased an R6250 and 5Ghz AC only connects at max 58Mbps when I'm standing right next to the router. I think it's more on the phone side. My Tab Pro connects at 433Mbps.

Was it just a design flaw with the phone? My wife's S4 Active seems to connect at 433mbs, but it's a slightly different phone.

Could be the phone, the driver, or the OS. I've seen many mentions of this issue with the S4.

wifi signal, but no internet.

Hi
I just received my htc hero, and I really love it.
The only problem is, is that when i try to browse the web it doesnt load webpages. My WiFi is signal is good, i even removed the WEP key but still no succes, and on my old iPhone I can browse the web using the same WiFi connection
Does anyone know what the problem is?
Mike
Can you use the internet on your pc? Is your router setup properly?
yep everything is good..
does obtain an address ??
yes its 192.168.1.101
also if connected, select the menu key and hit advanced, make sure its not set to a fixed (static) address unless you need that.
I have mine set to 14 channels too... not that I probably need that...
i did that and it is not static also set it on 14 channels but no effect
well i had that issue when i just got my hero phone. everything was fine, signal was excellent, dhcp was ok , and it even got an ip but there was no data connection present. The only solution was to update the router's driver. In my case, it was a d link 524.try that too. ( just to precise that i had no problems with my previous phones with the router)
Another thing is to try setting the router to g mode only.

what type of router do u have? u might want to search for a hacked driver for it. o know for a fact that u can find a lot for linksys.
try to connect to other AP's just to confirm that the problem is a compatibility issue bet ur phone and ur specific router and not the phone itself.
I got the same problem.
at home it works great with the router.
But at another router by my girl,
it connects to the router but the Internet doesn't work.
Sometimes it works for about 3 minutes.
I couldn't find the problem and her laptop works great
with that router.
The router is a Sitecom Wl-173.
Do you have the same router?
I am having a similar issue. It will work for a few minutes and then although the router signal says good I get no data coming through.
This is only a recent development though as I upgraded from a Linksys WRT54G router to a Linksys WRT160NL (which is Wirless-N), now I know that the Hero doesn't support N but the router is set to mixed mode as I have more G devices than N in my house so it should still work fine.
I will try tonight though swapping the router over to just work in G mode and see how I get on.
Its been suggested that the stock Linksys firmware on all models has issues with the Hero, which is why my old router was OK as it was running Tomato firmware instead of stock Linksys.
I guess I'll just have to wait until a 3rd party releases one for the WRT160NL
I had the same problem with my D-Link 524, i changed it to a netgear and internet has worked perfectly on my Hero since. It is a problem with the D-Link firmware and how it communicates with the Hero.
I had a similar problem with my router. What did it for me was to disable all security stuff (WEP / WPA) AND access control (i.e. define which devices may connect to your router). Then try to surf via hero. If surfing works, switch back on security stuff, surfing should still work. At least it did for me.

I second this, however,if you still have the Di 524,you should know that an update is out and it fixes the connectivity problem.

The wifi-stack in the kernel on the hero doesn't work well with many APs. With D-link I've found problems when the boxes run in 802.11n with b/g compatibility. The results are best with the AP locked at 802.11g.

I think it is the G2 version, yes. It does say G2 on the label on the back of the router.

Wifi Improvement using WEP instead of WPA Galaxy note 2

I havent had the best wifi experience with my note or my note 2. Hoping that the note 2 would be better I was a bit disapointed to find it was still taking ages on youtube constantly buffering and generally getting on my tits I found with my note1 changing the wifi frequency in wifi advanced options from Auto to 2.4ghz helped a bit but this option has been removed as far as I can tell in jellybean so I was stumped.
After googling my problem for some time it appeared that WPA2 security on my router could be the culprit. I would have thought that a new device like the note 2 would have no problem with any of the well known router security options but after changing my homehub2 from WPA2 to WEP128bit security my wifi problems have completely gone.
My phones wifi is now fast and reliable with what seems like a stronger signal.
I dont see anybody reporting wifi problems with the note 2 but I did have and it turned out to be my router security settings so this maybe something to try for anyone having issues with home wifi.
I dont believe this to be a note 2 issue but possibly jellybean could be improved to cope with router security better.
I tryed 3 routers over a year and it turned out to be just a setting ... Doh!

Well nice but I don't think it's worth risking security.

Some suggestions for poor wifi.
- disable bluetooth. It's been shown that having bluetooth on will slow wifi speeds on this device. Having bluetooth connected and streaming audio makes some people's wifi slow down to dial up speeds.
- of possible, use 5ghz wifi. This will reduce your wifi signal strength, but will help illuminate the problems caused by bluetooth.
Hope that helps.

there also is an issue with YouTube and wired connections. even 240p videos wont load, but its only certain servers. what I have found so far is the ones that on a whois lookup say Google is the owner have the issue. those that say YouTube are OK.

Man so much noob disinformation everywhere....
WEP is a encryption algorithm , 802.11n is a WiFi protocol standard and yes they are compatible.
5ghz in WiFi has a much higher transfer speed then 2.4ghz but at a cost of shorter range.

yup.... WEP can easily be cracked with Backtracks but if your router has WPS enabled Reaver can get your router to cough up its WPA password in a few hours.
Your problem could be with your router and not your phone.

Theres two encryption options with wpa2 personal, try the other one. It is know that some chipsets do better with one, choices are TKIP or AES, you might be currently set to both, try forcing your router to one or the other and compare them sppedwise

OP, you haven't listed your router. I know, as a fact; that the BT Home Hub's (BT provide as default, and it's what I'm using) are the worst piece of **** to have ever been included in their packages.
Try changing to 5.0Ghz, but make sure your other devices are compatible, otherwise they'll cause the router to revert back and decreasing your transfer speed.
No, WEP and Wireless 'n' are NOT compatible, don't believe me? That's fine, try it out for yourself.
There's also numerous threads on this issue, as well as other Galaxy devices.
There are far too many variables to include 'fixes.' What works for you, might not work for me and vice versa.
Grab an app called WiFi Analyzer from the play store, see the surrounding routers and check what channel they're running on.
How channels work, is that they have an overlap of 5 channels. For example, channels 1-6, 6-11, 2-7, 7-13 etc, etc.
As the routers compete for their selected channel, interference happens which diminishes the signal as well as the throughput data transfer speed.
Do some research

I had the same problem, repeated on two different GS4 phones today. I tried everything possible to figure out what was wrong but couldn't fix the problem. The phones would connect to my wireless router, but would send and receive data only intermittently. Sometimes, resetting the router, or pulling the phone's battery, or going into airplane mode would be the only ways to get the phone to actually send and receive data, but it would only work for 20 seconds - 3 minutes. Every other wireless device and wired device works on this router, except for the GS4. And the GS4s both worked in-store on their wireless network. My guess is that it's a hardware or software compatibility issue with certain routers. Oh and mobile data worked like a charm.
What kind of wireless router do you have?
Maybe you need to pay your internet bill

My S4 has the exact same problem on a DLink 655. Works ok on other networks I have tried but on the DLink it will work for about 20 seconds and then data stops flowing. No other device I have has any issues.
To figure out whether the issues is the SGS4 or the SGS4<>your router you really need to try it from some different locations. The i9100 had tons of issues with D-Link routers so perhaps that's what's happening here. My solution when I had issues with my i9100 was to ditch D-Link forever and move to NetGear and I haven't had a problem since (at least at home).

My router is a DIR-655 as well. Looks like this may be an actual issue with D-Link routers? Anybody having issues with another brand of router?
And if it IS an issue with D-Link, who's at fault for the problem? Samsung or D-Link? My 655 has been the most reliable piece of network equipment I've ever owned. It works with everything, except for a Galaxy S4...this is annoying.

yeah i actually got my phone 2 days ago and right out of the box had this problem, i was on other sites saying that the s3 i900 had alot of those issues on 4.2 and 4.2.1 jellybean.. lots of users reporting that when the upgraded to 4.2 ect they started having those issues.. i hope its a jellybean issue not hardware issue.. i agree with you though i have had my d-link 655 for years and never had an issue till now.. i have my s3 and iphone 5 all running on my dlink just fine S4 not so much..
Same problem here - excelent connection at 150 Mbps with my dlink dir-855, but dies quickly. wifi toggle helps. Tried a lot of settings, fixed ip/dhcp, 2.4 / 5 Ghz and etc - problem persists.
i have TP-LINK router but i drained my battery till phone went off then charged till 100% and no issues so far wifi works fine... just wondering why this problem could appear...
Seems like I've found the solution - in router settings, in firewall section disabled "TCP Endpoint Filtering" (set from "Address Restricted" to "Endpoint Independent"). Have not had any issues since than. But can't actually tell if it puts the network to any risk compared to previous settings.
i have also different problem
everything seems good but i have a big problem with wi fi but
when i try it with s2, it is working
whenever i want to access internet with wi fi on s4, in Wi fi menu, it writes -----> in order
1) "Obtaining ip adress..." and later
2)saved,secured
3)Obtaining ip adress...
4)failed to obtain ip
5)newtwork disabled becauseinternet connection is low

Samsung galaxy s4 wifi issues
I have the same problem, seems to be a wifi issue with 4.2.2, my router is DIR 655 Dlink, wifi only works if I just connected it then its either slow or disconnects. very frustrating, also I get 3G but its slow.
A family member just got a S4 and is facing the same issue with the DIR655.
I've updated firmware to latest version for my A4 hardware model, version 1.35ww but the problem persists. So I had to bring out another Access Point (TP-Link TL-MR3020)to cater to his needs...
So who should we complain to? the DLink has been serving me faithfully for the past 3 years+, infact the DIR655 was one of the best wireless routers around and I never an issue with any of my wireless toys, until it met the S4...

Can you confirm that this fix works for a lengthy period of time? Is it still working? I thought I had fixed mine once (the phone was working for a while) and then it just stopped transferring data altogether. I think tinkering around with some things can make it better or worse, depending on what it is.

Same here. I was contemplating replacing my 655 after 6 years of service without ever having to reset it only because it will not pass magic packets from WAN to LAN...at least the A versions don't (I have A2). And this is becoming more of a frequent problem as of late. Every other device connects without issue, even my mom's S2. I'm on WiFi right now on my HTC Vivid...no problems.
Which brings me to this...everybody in this thread with a 655, please list your hardware version and firmware version. It can be found at the top of the router's web interface page.

Wifi Issues on wireless N

Hi all,
Does anyone else have issues using their i337 on wireless N? When mine connects, then after a minute or 2 the phone is not able to get access to the internet. I have to reset the router or cycle the wireless on the phone to get it back. If I force the router to only use wireless G, the phone wifi works great.... I have also tried resetting the router to factor, but no change....
any advice/thoughts?
Thank you in advance!

What Model and brand is your router? Your most likely going to need a new router, as it Would be its fault and not the phone. If its D-Link then that should be self explanatory lol
I'm having the same issue with my S4 and my D-Link DIR-655 router. Wireless N allows me to connect to the router and obtain an IP address on the network, but I get no internet connection. If I default the router to only use g and b, it connects fine with internet.

Your just going to have to get a new router. D-Link mostly the older ones are nortrius for having issues like this. Depends on your internet speed and what you do over wireless more than 90% of people dont even need wireless N

D-Link = bad router. Google it and you'll see all the problems it has been causing people for years.
As far as Wireless N, it's new enough that I'm guessing that Samsung and the router people both have some updating before it's as good as it should be

Yea The S4 has AC support I think, Which is the NEW standered. So It would deffantly have 100% Wireless N support haha

My Netgear router is only 6 months old, and doesn't have N support, since it requires multiple IO transmission. And MIMO has been a mess for manufacturers. So A) it might not work well from the phone side and B) any D-link router would probably work as well as you'd expect.

Its only G?? Wireless N has been the latest standered since 2007. Anything more than $20 for a wireless router thats not Wireless N today you paid too much. Bur AC is a WHOLE need thing. The Cheapest AC router is $160 and I think is kind of pointless for a mobile phone.

2009. And I didn't need MIMO since nothing I had supported it. And you're right about AC, I'm not upgrading the router just to get that - G doesn't carry through the walls in my house well enough to use. AC probably would, but I don't need the power draw.

I have an RT-N16 and love it, the main thing I look for is Gigabit ethernet I have a server and a lot of big transfers are needed. I have a network of about 25 total devices.
I'm also having this problem. Why are people so quick to say it is the router's fault? Every other wireless device in my house works flawlessly, every person who visits me and connects to my wi-fi has zero issues. My GS4 is the only thing to ever have issues in fact.
I'm running DD-WRT on a Linksys WRT160-Nv3. Linksys and D-Link are probably the most commonly sold consumer router's here in the states. Your average person goes to Walmart, buys the 60 dollar router, and leaves. If Samsung can't design a phone that works with these common types of routers, then the problem is on their end.
Telling someone they need to go out and replace their router is really not an answer, using the reason "D-Links suck, your router is the problem" is opinion, not fact.

Wifi Connectivity Issues

My new galaxy s4 I9500 has been working fine until 2 days ago when the wifi started reconnecting every few seconds. I'm not sure what the problem is and I cannot find a solution for this. I have read the issues with the D-Link routers however I use a Netgear router and all devices except the galaxy s4 can connect fine without any issues. It started happening after my phone automatically updated to version: I9500UBUAMDK, but I am not sure if it has to do with software.
If anyone else is having the same problem or has a solution, please help me through this issue, thanks.
Anyone? It's the only problem I am currently facing with the phone and is a major problem for me as i use Wifi at home all the time. Please help me solve the issue and I'll be so happy!
i have also problem with my dlink 2640b and i found solution for me
you need to go to wierless settings and chosse CHANAL 13
and in option where you can chose wifi speed ( like b only, b and g mixed, only g ) chose G only
after that i don't have any problem with my s4
i also have security off

Thank you for the reply, and yes I have read that this problem is mostly on D-Link routers and that there are many fixes for that, however I am currently using a Netgear router which I haven't heard many people having problems on, so there are not so many fixes out there for that. Thank you for the reply though, I will continue to look for a solution.

Try changing the channel width to 20Mhz. After I did that the reconnecting issue was gone on my D-link router, but as you've read at 54g speeds. I can now stream video to my TV without it stopping. I am contemplating buying a new 802.11ac router to connect at 433Mbps as my D-link is too slow for my broadband now. I hope that helps.

Changing Wifi channel width from 40 MHz to 20 MHz solved wifi dropping and reconnecting problem for me also. I have Asus RT-N16 with latest updates. Also on my SGS4 has latest updates, stock android 4.4.2.
I used Wifi scanner, and there should not be any interference with my Wifi station. I have channel 1 and my neightbour has channel 7 Wifi. Wifi signal is also strong for my router. I was wondering how this can be possible, as any other device had not dropped connections @40 MHz widht, BUT a brand new Galaxy S4 GT-I9506 drops it withing minutes again and again?
