Just bought a new Nexus one to use while I'm overseas (used an EVO 4G back in the states) and one of the first things I noticed was the touch screen seems considerally less sensitive than the one on my EVO. I find myself having to hit the screen multiple times because the first touch didn't register often. This applies to the capacitive buttons on the bottom of the screen as well.
Has anyway used a Nexus One vs. another phone and noticed its screen being slightly less sensitive. I have the SLCD version by the way but I think it uses the same sensor as the AMOLED so I'm not sure that makes a difference.
The N1 has a crap digitizer. It's one of it's weak points sadly.
Hit the capacitive buttons slightly above where you think they are. Works every time...

+1 especially its alignment is really inaccurate when using the multi touch function
It is kinda rough. But not too bad. Maybe just a bit worse then my HD2.
Other than the annoyance, does it really affect anything?

No, been dealing with it since day 1 with absolutely no issues what so ever.

I've had two devices, neither have it.
It's cosmetic, anyway.

No effect on performance, just kinda takes away for the ascetics.
I agree. As long as it works good, I can get over some of the rais

I have a slight raise in mine, I didn't notice it till I read about the issue on here...haha I can live with it. Right now I am in love with this tablet and jelly bean!

Same here. I have a slight raise and that's my only complaint. Theresa little bit of ghosting but that fades away. I have none of the flickering. I'm pretty happy with it and cant put it down. Its driving my wife nuts though.
My first 2 had the raise (3rd did, clamped it down). It was annoying, VERY annoying. One of them was very bad. The entire left side made qa click sound, you couldn't type without hearing it. Did it affect the performance? No. But its not something you want, except, or should have to put up with after spending hundreds.
I just got another nexus 7 yesterday and there's a slight screen lift around middle left portrait mode, probably 1/10 millimeter lol so I'm not going to bother with it and everything else is good. Love this nexus 7.

None issue for me, as it hasn't occurred.
The actually creaking or rise isn't an issue for me. What's an issue for me is that whenever I press the lower left hand area of the screen, I get that rippling effect like when you press down on an LCD monitor.
My first one had a very slight raise with minor clicking. I would have kept it but the speaker was blown. My second one was absolutely horrible. Although the speaker was fine, the entire left side of the device was separating. Slight finger pressure would cause numerous creaks and 'squishy' noises. The silver plastic bezel that goes around the device was buckled on the left side so the case would not completely click into the display. It also had horrible flicker and slight backlight bleed in the lower left corner. After reporting the differences and issues Google assured me that my 3rd replacment would not have any of the previous defects. My third one is rock solid. No flicker, no separation issue. Speakers are clear.
To answer the OP question: Screen separation is purely cosmetic unless you have other issues ie touch response, backlight bleed, flicker etc etc. But, when you pay a couple hundred for a device, you should not have accept any of those issues.
Kind of a nuisance. However, the fix is rather simple. I used the heat solution.
Screen lifting advice needed.
Had my N7 about 2 weeks.
Perfect out of the box; beautiful graphics, no screen lift, no dead/stuck pixels, etc., etc.
About 2 days in I got a verrrryyyy slight screen lift on left side with attendant squishiness. Not too bad and I can live with it.
About 3-4 days later the right side gets the same issues as the left side. Still not annoying enough to RMA it.
I have a Skinomi screen protector that came yesterday and I'm wondering if I should try the heating solution before putting on the screen protector. I'll probably have to use an external heat source as I'm having screen lift on the right side and from what I've read on these forums, the heating from playing videos/games is focused primarily on the left side.
Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.
heating solution =
1. heat
2. clamp
3. cheer?
I have just a little lift on the left side, and a bit of flicker at very low light levels. Other than that, nothing.
The flickering bugs me the most and I'll probably return it in a couple of months when they have (hopefully) worked out all the issues. They are factory defects and with a 1year warranty returning it shouldn't be a problem.
Also, this is my first tablet, first Android device for that matter, and I love it. Way more convenient than my laptop for everyday browsing and email checking. GO Nexus!

What do you mean by backlight bleed?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I completely understand not wanting to put up with issues, but to use the price point as a reason is pathetic. The nexus 7 is a hell of a lot of device for a little bit of money compared to the competition.
So how about complaining without the "for this much money" excuse. That excuse should be iPad exclusive.
Back light bleed is when you see light around the edges of the screen, usually only visible in the dark.

Sorry but whats the "heat solution"?
curious is anyone else has seen this or anything like this. (picture attached)
we got two of these phones in mid december and I just noticed on my phone, while sitting in the dark using the phone, that an odd line becomes visible.
the brighter the screen, the more apparent it is or if I view the phone more from a side angle.
it rotates accordingly if if rotate the phone which makes me thing it's a physical problem with the phone.
I did a screen capture of the screen, and that didn't capture the line, so this is looking more and more like a hardware problem
my wife's phone seems to be fine.
the phone is basically new, opened on christmas, and never dropped. there's absolutely not physical damange to the phone and there's no apparent crack on the outer glass that I can feel or see and as far as I can tell, screen response is fine in the area.
the only thing I can think of is t-mo just shipped the darn phones together in one of those cheap bubble envelopes, and when i opened mine, some of the corners of the cardboard that the phone rested in, within the nexus box, seemd to be crushed in a bit, though again, there's no apparent physical damage that I saw externally.
anyone else seen anything like this, cause I've not heard of any other folks complaining about anything like this
wondering if i should try getting it replaced, though i guess it would require waiting for one to be shipped as i don't think any of my local stores have them yet. thoughts?
Sends more like a screen defect than a crack. Try using a screen color test. If its still there, then do an RMA

more pictures in case anyone else encouters it
just went ahead and ordered a replacement....but adding more pictures if anyone else encounters similar
does seem to be something with the hardware, as it was there with color test apps...just less visible when screen was darker
Looks like a screen defect to me not a crack. U did the right thing RMAing it. At least u have a usable phone while u wait.

If you shine a light across the face of the screen almost level with the screen and watch as you move the light from across to pointing down then you may see the line with more detail and maybe a reflection of it.
Hi,
I'm just wondering who makes the screens for the Nexus 7. Is it one manufacturer, or more than one? I bought a 32GB N7 a few weeks ago. Except for a little bit of screen lift on the right side, it's been fine. It's not enough for me to return it. But I also noticed that the screen was a bit yellow, with more yellow on the right side than the left.
Anyway, my wife really likes my N7 and her birthday is coming up, so I bought her one from the playstore. I took it out to set it up for her, and noticed that the screen is completely different. This screen is not at all yellow, and seems to be much more even than mine. But I've noticed that when light reflects off of it just right, I can actually see the web of sensors right below the glass. It's obviously most noticeable when it is off, but it can also be seen when it is on. It pretty much requires a light to be shining directly on it. On mine, if I look really carefully, I can see rows of little dots, but no web (not sure that web is the right word. Looks like a web). When off, if I reflect light off it indirectly, the LCD reflects back blue. On mine, it reflects back more greenish.
They both look exactly the same when viewing images. I can tell no difference at all. But like I said, when viewing white, mine is more yellow and uneven.
Anyway, just wondering if there are multiple manufacturers, and if not, what could account for the pretty big differences? As an iPad owner since the first one, I am used to multiple screen manufacturers.
Call the manufacturer ASAP mine had screen lift and i didnt notice until my screen randomly broke one day and the crack was right were the screen lift is. now the lower right portion of the touchscreen doesnt work and im using and external keyboard and touchpad. to answer ur question though i have no clue who makes them.

Hey guys,
I've had my nexus 4 for a week now and I am super pleased by it. The phone runs like a dream.
The only issue I seem to be having is that I can see the IPS sensors even with the screen on!.
I'm talking about the little transparent-gray squares all over it, not about the super awesome dots that you can see with direct sunlight.
This is flipping me out!
Is anybody else having this problem with it?
I can't appreciate the beautiful screen because of this.
Also, when displaying single color frames specially dark ones, like on the clock app , the colors are not really solid.
I get this vertical stripes that are approximate to the color but not quite it.
Im posting a screenshot but I don't think that youll be able to notice it since it may be a hardware problem.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
That's a hardware thing, not visible in screenshots. You'd need to take an actual picture.
Are you referring to the dot grid that is visible in direct sunlight? Everyone has is. It's because of the fact that the screen is integrated into the glass.
I think it looks kind of cool but that might just be me.
Edit: Gotta read the whole thread first I guess you're not talking about the dots. I have no idea what you're talking about then.

Question to the OP. Do YOU see anything wrong with those images, or is it a hardware problem? I can't see any difference between your screen shots and my phone.
Damn it man, now i see them too -.-
I went to the clock app, and i can see some stripes on the left but mine are vertical.

Haha Dude that's the digitizer. Don't worry. It's all cool.
Chill out people.. Its just the digitizer that you can see, so close to the screen for better touchscreen responsiveness. The most likely reason you can still see it with your device screen on is that you have your brightness too low.. Put it up
even amoled screen are also the same

When I first got my Nexus4 the weird screen was the first thing that popped out at me. Between the visible digitizer matrix that glints when it catches the sun wrong, to the odd rectangles that can be seen behind the screen I was initially bummed and thought about returning the phone. It doesn't even bother me anymore
This is my 8th android device and the first one that has a funky screen like this, but it really isnt a big deal. Under 95 percent of conditions it looks really nice
I have been able to see the digitizer on every single capacitive screen i have ever owned.
@David_Azar I have to agree.. initially I was disgusted by how prominent the digitzer pattern was, I've never had ANY screen show it as much as the Nexus 4 does.
However, the vertical stripes you're referencing is commonly referred to as "banding". I have this on my Nexus 4 as well, most visible on grays (especially darker grays).
I have been doing some research and I believe the banding issue will reduce over time. If you check your screen when displaying a white background at max brightness, such as gmail or chrome browser, you should see a slight yellowing of the whites. It appears this can be due to the adhesive they used to glue the digitizer to the screen not curing completely. After several weeks of use, the heat from the processor will help cure the adhesive causing the yellow to disappear after a while.
I cannot say for certain that it will completely resolve the banding issue, but I have noticed that the worst banding is in the areas where the yellow tint is most prominent. I have also been testing my display every day to monitor any changes, and I am happy to report I do see a minor reduction in both the yellowing and banding (I've only had my Nexus 4 for five days so far).
Give it a couple of weeks, run some intensive games to get the processor to heat up every day. Keep brightness at max for the next few weeks and let us know if you see any improvements.
As for the pattern of the digitizer in the glass.. it's not going anywhere so get used to it. I don't like it much either but it seems to be less prominent once you start becoming used to it.
Good luck, let us know how it goes
Hey man,
Curiously enough I've never had the yellow tints everybody's complaining about. I'm used to The digitizer matrix ( rectangles) buy at first it was really weird. I was coming from a non HD display ( a RAZR Maxx) so naturally, I expected that my N4 would have a perfect screen.
I've had my N4 for almost two months now and the banding has not reduced. I made some research over the last month and I found that with some kernel settings for saturation the banding is reduced. I'm not sure if it is really reduced or the clear gray tones that have the banding just don't appear anymore because of the saturation.
The Trinity kernel reduces this a bit but like I said, your screen will look life a f*** ing AMOLED.
Right now I'm using the kernel provided by the 123 FAUX CLOCK project. I'm using the LG factory presets and for the most part I'm really happy with the screen. If you or anybody else comes up with a different solution, let others know on this thread.
Peace brothers.

Just for kicks, if you stop by a T-mobile location compare your screen with the display model and see if you can spot the yellow tint on either screen (on a white background)
I will update this thread with my phone's progress (or lack thereof if it stops improving).
I get banding issues also, more noticeable in grey backgrounds; but I can I see them in other colors if I look hard enough
I use a dark black theme to avoid looking at those bands
I can say this. I've had a ton of devices..latest was s3 and I'll just say I'm stoked to have IPS over pen tile. Just knowing HD was plagued by this alone was enough for me to ditch Sammy all together especially after seeing rgb on note 2 was no better. This is my opinion of Samsung's design ...I know why they chose it but I can't and won't buy another amoled until they get another tech in order. So now I say kudos on IPS but I'm surely a screen purest and I found these hardware screen/digitizer artifacts you speak of and to me its so much less noticeable. Your not alone. You just like good clean HD like me. Lol HTC one should be a nice one to check out...
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
That would be a little like kicking myself in the nuts. Nothing good can come out of that.
If I spot the yellow tints once, then I will always look for it. I hate doing that with the banding but it's an automatic thing.
I dunno why but it really bums me out whenever I have a problem with my phone.
Let's keep posting of someone finds a solution or something .

I've got the quite visible digitizer rectangles too. In anything less than a dark room if the phone is not on a perfect angle they are visible.
I can't really tell if "everyone's" is like that, or just some are "worse" than others.

Here's an image with them visible with the screen on (and at an angle) - difficult to take a photo of - but much easier to see with the naked eye.

Few more with the screen off.

Went and checked out an Optimus G today (Nexus 4 isn't actually released in Japan). Given that a Nexus 4 is just a remodeled Optimus G I thought it'd be worth comparing screens. The digitizer matrix is barely visible on the G I was looking at with the screen OFF. With it on you could almost see it at some angles. It is much more visible on my Nexus 4 which you can almost always see with the screen off and at an angle and often with the screen on.
I'm leaning towards my phone being "less than a perfect example of a Nexus 4" and not the "norm" at the moment.
they are much more noticeable in Rev 11 devices and they where barely visible in Rev 10, i am sure that there is a technical reason behind it

See that explains it a little more. Not sure I see the logic in putting a screen with pretty decent viewing angles on a device and then sticking a really visible digitizer on it though.
I've contacted the seller and I guess I'll wait and see what they say in regard to it.
