Hi everyone, I'm having an issue where not all files on my Nexus 4 are visible in Windows File Explorer. More specifically, I've been playing an emulated game, and in ES file explorer I can see the game and the save file. I dont always want to play on my phone, but when I plug it into the computer, the save file is not visible, so I have to manually send the save file over via google drive. It also happens with some of my word documents that are stored on the phone. I'll see it on the phone, plug the phone in, and just that one file isnt showing in explorer.
Through looking around it seems like this is a common problem because MTP is stupid. Anybody have suggestions on what to do? I'd like to just be able to access the files straight from my phone so that If I save on the computer with the phone plugged in, itll overwrite the file on the phone. Doesnt seem like editing files like that is a possibility using airdroid and the like.
Thanks for any suggestions!
I don't know what you've tried already so you might have tried these things, but here are a few suggestions.
I don't know if the files you are talking about would be hidden by default in Explorer, but go ahead try showing hidden files. I believe to do that, on your computer, go to Folder Options under Control Panel. On the General tab, check the Show all folders checkbox. Under the View tab, about halfway down there are a few options that start with 'Hide' or 'Hidden'. Pretty much make sure all of those are unchecked. There are also two radio buttons that ask if you want to show hidden files and folders. Make sure it's on the option to Show them.
Try switching between MTP and PTP to connect to the computer. This is doubtful to work, but hey, you never know. To do that, on your phone, go to Settings->Storage->... (menu button)->USB Computer Connection
That's all I have, really. Hopefully one of those helps!
PTP only allows you to see the camera file. And no, they are not hidden files. Some of them are regular word files, .docx and the like. Ive already tried that though

Get this error the other day, and again last night! Says that I was running low on Memory, and wouldn't let me load the YouTube app! Then Last night as I was using Opera, it gave the same error....
So, did some searching throught the File Explorer, and noticed the YouTube folder was rammed with tiny JPEG images....
I plugged the device up to the laptop, and thouht it'd be easier to deleted files this way as you can highlight and then hit delete!
However, it wouldn't show the "Windows" folders. Even when I changed the properties to show all hidden files and folders....
So, a couple of questions....
How do I access the Windows folder on my HTC via my Laptop? How do I stop YouTube, Opera etc storing all these files and clogging up the memory?
TIA,
Mat

Why don't u try Resco Explorer.
Menu--Edit--Multiselection Mode. It will go to the multi selection mode. Then,
Menu--Select All. Then, You just Uncheck those that is not JPEG Files. Delete.
Well, That's one of the ways....
you can access the windows folder on your device by selecting "active Sync" when you connect the phone to your PC.. then just use windows Explorer from your PC..
need to un tick "hide system files" as well as show hidden.

Hi again guys..... Noticed again last night that the device memory is running low....
I managed to connect to the laptop, and show all hidden files and folders... I deleted all Opera Temp files etc, and YouTube files and that only gave me about 30Mb back. Noticed I have several hundred manilla files within the windows folder.... IIRC, they are a combination of numbers follwed by _manilla (ie, 123456_manilla). Not sure on the file type. I highlighted all these and they only came to a few Mb......
Not sure where all the files are being stored, and what is "clogging up" my memory? Maybe browsing on Opera, is causing it. But AFAIK, I deleted all possible temp files etc.....
All I do on the phone is ring and text (obviously), check emails, and browse on Opera. Now and then I may use YouTube, and very rarely use the Facebook app....
Not sure what files I am ok to delete. I don't want to deleting something, and cause a problem later on!
Any suggestions on what to check?
TIA

well here are the basic windows folders that you can clear out.
Windows/app data/volatile
Windows/cookies
windows/history
Windows/temp internet files
windows/temp.
also these folders may be repeated in the windows/profiles/guest folder.
temp folder in root
all those manila files, that actually "is" manila.they're the various scripts codes and layout files.

found a guest folder, not much in there.... also have to delete one file at a time. If I try to delete multiple files it says I don't have permission (or summat like that)... But if i do one file at a time, then the folder, it lets me...........
still stuck, and only have about 12.4Mb on Device Memory left!
also just deleted the cache folder within the Opera folder.... That free-ed up all of 5Mb!!!!!!!
then all I can suggest is running searches for files larger than..... well, start at 500k and see what turns up.
make sure whatever file manager you use is showing everything.
Is there some way to access the x10 though the computer to download pics that i have taken?
I have plug it into the pc and there is nothing recognized like the minisim 16g that is in it or the on-board storage.
I run win 7 so there's not much it misses.
I have been reading the forum for related stuff but coming up empty.
Ok i downloaded PC Companion I can access the phone, but still don't see the minisim, or pics that i took.
I suggest using an app called Wifi File Explorer or Websharing. Search those apps in the market. These applications will only work with wifi on. It will use your Wifi and allows you to browse through your SDCard contents through a browser. No need for connecting cables to your computer.
Instructions:
1. Start the app (Wifi File Explorer or Websharing)
2. For Websharing, press the Start button. It will give you an IP address.
3. Type that IP address on your computer in your browser.
If you want to view pics, I would suggest Websharing cuz it allows you to view pics through the browser and thus allows you to see which ones you want to download to your computer. Wifi File Explorer only gives you a list of files.
Thanks i will get to that right away.
In the mean time the place that i was looking for in showed up in PC Companion under File Manger. It open explorer and at first few times was not able to find the minisim. For some reason it showed up 20 minutes later under the file name DCIM.
I don't know why it didn't show but it does now.
But i am still going to try the programs.

You can also just use Mediascape and Bluetooth the files to your computer (assuming you have bluetooth on your computer.)
It's what I do... very easy, fast enough, and requires no set-up or typing after the first time.
I downloaded a 1.2GB file to my nexus 4. upon connecting it to windows to transfer it over I don't see the file.
I see the other files in the folder but its like the larger file is hidden. Is there some file size cap that prevents it from showing in windows?
Edit: turning on and off usb debugging has no effect, still only see various files except for larger files
anyone?
that happens alot, no file cap, i fix it by rebooting 2 or 3 times to get it shown, must be a issue with nexus media storage manager or some lousy process, i dont know why google wants to make it harder for us.
In Windows try to search a dot (.) in the folder. If you couldn't see it then the file is likely encrypted.

Cool a restart did the trick. Weird that files don't show up at first, guess it needs a fresh media scan to work.
So when I connect my Nexus 6P to my new Dell XPS13 and I chose file transfer as the connection option, the device shows up and I can see all the folders but when I open them it's like only select files are there. For example my download folder has a few word files, an xcel file, a few pictures and a small movie file. In the file explorer on my laptop, I only see one word document. So I know it can see the files but where are the rest? When I look on my phone they are still there.
Also my TWRP folder I see a few things but not the backup folder with my backup in it. I have hidden files selected to be shown on my laptop, is there something else I am missing?
EDIT: So this is strange, if I boot to recovery while connected, the drive pops back up and my laptop can see everything just fine, but if I reboot back to just the regular phone, the laptop stops seeing select files? I had an older windows 10 laptop and it didn't have this problem (I've since sold that, so that's not an option.)
Which files in particular? I noticed that sometimes I have to force media scanner to run and reconnect the phone to the computer at times, but the behavior is a bit erratic I havent pin pointed a specific time this occurs.

It's actually kind of random, but specifically in the TWRP folder there is a folder called BACKUPS that has my backup of my phone, and that whole folder doesn't show up.
Then random stuff like the one word document and one xcel document not showing up, but another word document does show up, it makes no sense to me.
Try going into device manager update device drivers, select location yourself and chose the phone for drivers location. Had to do that to mine when I first got it. It wouldn't let me even copy anything to the phone or create a folder or see contents of folders anytime I clocked on something it would say device disconnected
bump, this is driving me nuts.
This too happens to me. Formatting the phone completely had no effect... I'm going to do more playing around and see what happens.
I searched all those essential forums but did not find a solution. I tried to back up some pictures I have taken to the PC. The phone is recognized and I can find the folder on the phone where the pictures are stored. But in there, there are only a few pitcures and even folders are missing. If I check on the phone in the gallery app, everything's there as I expect it. How can that happen
I have connected the phone to all 3 USB ports of my win10 notebook and tried 2 different usb cabels. Allways the same...
maybe these pictures are synced with google and are shown from the cloud.
they are definitely on the phone. When I check with a file explorer on the phone, the folders are full of pictures.
Try syncthing

Check for a nomedia file.
If your phone sees a .nomedia file in a folder, it won’t load the folder’s contents when it scans your directory.
file explorers can see them
You may have to go to the respective Folders where images / videos are stored and Go to settings > Show hidden file to see the .nomedia file
thanks, but I don't think this the problem. I see all pictures whether I check with fotos app or f-stop gallery. If there was a .nomedia file, I couldn't see the pictures there, right?
Only on the pc I don't see the pictures on the connected phone.
I get the same problem only its not just pictures. Entire folders just don't show up. There's no nomedia files either. I get it to work occasionally by changing USB ports but that doesn't always work.
Yesterday I got all pictures backuped onto my pc. But it's kind of weird, I still don't get it, why
I have now 2 working methods but the "normal" way, with a running phone an copy paste with windows explorer from my pc still doesn't work.
method 1: basically the same as my "normal" way, but having the phone in recovery mode. Then all pictures and folders are present...
method 2: using syncthing. Great app, thanks for the tip! This one's working great even though the phone is running. Took some time to setup everything, but now it does its job
