Can you post updater script you are using under [ hide ] tags?
Was your /system mounted before you flashed your rom?

I made it without kitchen . I used a sample updater script given by hell_lock/prototype U.
Its attached.
I guess its some prob with my sd card cuz i could not install the same hyperion 7 which used to work before.
Could anyone test it???????
Here is my ROM-http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?3pk413hrcq1ze27

first question, how did u make ur rom?
how did u make the zip file?
how are the files placed inside ur zip?

I think he just grab someone else's ROM and edited it as much as he wanted and then grab the Updater-script from Hell-lock and thinking "hey, this must be works!" and now, look the result. No one has success to make a Custom ROM without a kitchen (Editing the .zip).
If i helped you, Press the thanks button. don't say it

to be honest,
i never used kitchen to make my rom,
i had to code the updater script manually,
@OP.
you need to study the codes first and know what you are doing,
you can't build a house without proper procedures, same with ROM building,
you must learn to research and be patient when you fail,
it happens all the time,
in most instances the phone won't boot and what i always do is to go back and think over what went wrong and what must i do to resolve the issue,
we can help you as much as you can but please try to help yourself understand the situation a bit more.

Thanks for motivating me. I know what is the problem now. I did not mount /system before flashing?. Added that to my script... All working fine now.
@GermanyGSG-
How the heck could you create ROMs before kitchen was made .. Eh? Its a matter of bash and edify... No kitchen needed.

[Q] Is there a newbie's guide for this phone?

I understand there's a tips and tricks thread that explains things in more detail but how does somebody go from just getting the phone to installing, or even understanding, things like obsidian, onyx, morphing and learning what the basic functions of such programs are.
The question I currently have is concerning flashing custom roms. In the tips & tricks thread, it talks of froyo builds (ex: bionix & frankin-twiz). What is it exactly? From what I understand, it sounds like a mini os that you install onto your device which helps in applying different functions to it, which makes custom roms possible.
I'm currently trying to get http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=845530 to work on my vibrant. Can anybody help a newbie out?

the link you posted is just to a theme.
to get the theme to work you'll need to be running obsidian first.
so lets see, the easiest way to explain the different versions 2.2, 2.1 1.6, 1.5 and so forth is this...
its pretty much like going from windows 95 to 98 to 2000 to xp to vista and so forth.
our vibrants come with android 2.1, 2.2 is the next version of the os to come out (basicaly like moving from vista to windows 7)
the different roms like obsidian and Macnut and such are just names that the developers gave their roms.
what happens is a developer starts out with a version of android (in the case of Macnut and Obsidian this is 2.2)
and then they add their own modified tweaks and such to it.
and so in the end they get Obsidian which is a modified 2.2
or Macnut which is also a modified 2.2
they differ a bit though as Obsidian is based almost totaly on a leaked version of 2.2 for the US vibrant, where Macnut is based alot on the 19000 version of 2.2 for the european phones.
so when choosing a rom just choose the base you want first: 2.1 or 2.2
then look through the tweaks on a few roms and read some of the thread for that rom untill you get a feel for what makes it unique
you can also just experiment by flashing a rom for a day or so and then switching to a new one untill you find one you like.
Morphing is a way to apply a theme to a rom, this does not generaly change functionality at all, it only changes apearance.
alot of themes are either morphs (you install them using metamorph, which is an app from the market)
or they also come in zip format (which are installed by flashing from recovery)
for the theme you posted you will need to flash obsidian, and then flash the zip for the theme afterwards.
have you rooted your device yet?
thats the place to start, if you need help just pm me or repost here and I'll do what I can.
also, there is a "newbie's guide":

lol true true
Before you even want to start with anything, you have to learn what 'rooting' your phone means.
Without root, you won't be able to do any of the above. You might be able to download the programs necessary, but you won't be able to use them.
For ex. Titanium Backup, ROM Manager, etc.
We use ROM Manager to install different ROMs on our phones.
Much to read, my young grasshopper.
OP, I made the Tips/Tricks sticky... would you PM be exactly what you think it lacks? I want to make sure it is applicable to everyone... I thought it was straight-forward, perhaps not.
my phone is rooted. So how do I go about flashing obsidian?
I thought roms were the same as themes? What's the difference?
And just to clarify I understand the tips and tricks thread is sort of the newbies guide but even then theres a lot of terminology that a new user wouldn't understand. I just wanted some basic information that would allow me to transition into the tips and tricks thread more easily.
I appreciate the responses so far
Have you download Rom Manager from the Market? If not, do so.
Then follow the instructions (in the sticky) to flash the recovery (it's the top of the list when you open Rom Manager).
Assuming you did that, you can reboot into recovery, make a backup of your system.. something you can always come back to (a timestamp of your system at that moment).
Download the ROM you want, put it on your internal memory (sdcard/....) NOT in a folder.
Go to Clockwork recovery, choose to insall a zip from sd card... select the name of the ROM and then click Yes to install it.
It will run it's course, then you can just reboot when done.
The first bootup will take a long time (10 minutes probably)... let it boot.... leave your phone alone for like 10 or so minutes after bootup (suggested by Team Whiskey, I never really do this).
It's that easy.
Think of a ROM as an OS... the developers take Froyo (2.2) or Eclair (2.1) and make a lot of tweaks, remove things, add things... basically anything to enhance the user experience.
THEMES are something you flash over a custom ROM... it can change the icons, graphics, notification bar, etc... they are cosmetic. You see in my signature I have Axura 2.0.3 (amazing rom and there is a newer version out) and then I have BlackFroyo (which is the theme) on top of the ROM to change the look of things. Axura has a steel looking notification bar, I much prefer black (hence the theme I chose).
The ONE thing that can be confusing... if you make a backup right now (you have stock eclair), if you flash a froyo rom... you would need to flash either the stock eclair kernel (the download link is also in the sticky) to restore your nandoid backup.... OR, you could just flash another ROM that has a kernel (most do) and you would be good to go too.
And addition to this is to make sure your phone is NOT hardware locked.
To test it:
1) Take out battery from the phone and put it back in again
2) The USB cable plugged into the computer (not in the phone yet)
3) Push and hold down both of the Volume buttons at the same time
4) Plug in USB cable and it should take you into the Download mode.
If it does you are good to go. Just read some about Odin and Stock Android
If it isn't you need to make sure to flash JI6 to your phone (also Stock) onto your phone using Stock Manager. That should fix your hardware locked. Go over the above steps to make sure that is the case.
At this point, I have rooted my device and downloaded rom manager.I believe I have backed up everything after following the directions and I do have the blackfroyo.zip on my sd card and for some reason it won't "go" (although I'm sure there's a step I am missing here, something with obsidian) so that wasn't much of a surprise.
Edit: I noticed I tried to use a theme on there and not the obsidian "OS" (idiot) when I tried the backup thing with rom manager. Where can I download the most recent version of obsidian and/or is axura an acceptable alternative?

Been working on updating the wiki. Please check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S_SGH-T959#ROMs for the different ROMs currently available.
^^ both are solid. I prefer Auxura *no touchwiz*.... download it from the development section. Place in on the internal (sdcard/ ) and flash it, reboot... I would let the phone chill for awhile then reboot again.... THEN if you want, start messing with the theme. You can see from my signature you and I are similar.
to the OP, I started a noob friendly guide in the Q&A section. Please let me know exactly what you want in there.
Here is a video guide, its kinda old but the principles are the same.

I have been browsing around and reading on XDA since I got my G1 on release day. I have since upgraded to the MYT3G and now to the Vibrant. I have always used XDA as a source of information for rooting, etc. I don't post very often, but, I would like to throw props out to all the individuals in the thread, this is one of the few threads I have read on XDA that no one got flamed for being a "noob" and asking basic info, the information given was clear, accurate and very helpful. No one pointed to using the search function, everyone just gave good answers. AWESOME
I hope to see more threads like this in the future. Bravo and well done to all.
So I tried installing obsidian 5 and this is what happened. I first put the zip file on my sd card, I did all the necessary prerequisites (I think) using rom manager, flash recovery > vibrant yada yada yada and then pressed install rom from sd card and chose the obsidian zip file. Then the phone starts backing itself up and it finally reaches a point where it says (E: Can't open/sdcard/sd/obsidian_v5_beta.zip (no such file or directory) Installation aborted.
I then try to navigate to the file from the menu but whenever I click the sd file, it just exits, I think it says that no zip file is found or something but when I boot it up normally afterwards, the file is still there.
But the file is within the sd file . . . what am I doing wrong? I tried to fix permissions thinking it was that but no luck.
You probably need to move to the rom to the internal sd card. I thought you're able to add it to the external with the recent update but perhaps not

the rom IS on the sd card, unless you mean the memory on the actual phone itself
ROMs go on the root of the internal memory (no folder)... drop it in sdcard/
Also, this was mentioned in Post 8, and in team whiskeys install guide. Please pay attention to details.
oh okay, this whole time I've been thinkin the sd card folder was the root folder. Well I have finally put obsidian with success and now I'm having a difficult time implementing http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=845530. I have downloaded the zip file but I don't understand what "flash it through clockwork recovery" means. It kinda sounds like I should use something in rom manager but I'm not sure, I have tried to reboot into recovery through rom manager with no luck.
I've also tried using metamorph but when i choose the blackfroyo.zip file, it says that the file is invalid and that the theme control file could be missing. Am I doing something wrong here as well?
Thanks for all your help so far, I really appreciate you taking time out of your busy life to help an individual with (what may be to you) simple problems

From where you are now. Make sure the zip file is in the internal sd card, Open rom manager go to install rom from sd card then choose the that file then click ok and CW will do its thing. Also this is only for Obsidian v4.2 and Auxura 2.05. Good luck! Also you should make a nandroid back up first just in case.

[DEV's] OMG PLEASE .. For The Love Of God! - WE NEED A BACKUP PROGRAM!

I am Soooo Sick of re-installing Nand Roms ..

Just like how DFT Team made it with MAGLDR 1.11
SIMPLE - Easy - Works Every Freaking Time!!
Something that makes (1) Img file that gets copied to the SD Card!
No Partions Ect. Crap .. Then you could just Flash it back
I am Looking for a Complete NAND Memory Backup Program more like ..
Acronis or Ghost That Does an Image of the complete Nand Memory.
Something Universal .. would not matter if you use NAND or ZIP Or > Whatever comes next! to install Android
I figure .. If we can backup using "clockwork" maybe it could not be that hard
to make a program .. that will Image the Nand from Sec. 0 - 99999.
I am trying to express my feelings and MANY others I have seen in other threads.
That we need a SIMPLE.. way to backup the ENTIRE NAND And Do A Restore.

A Program That Will Do this .. Thats What This Thread Is About ..
HELP! PLEASE HELP! OMG PLEASE ..
Before I Kill Myself! The Wife And Kids A Depending on you!
I don't see the difficulty of installing CWM, it's descripted nicely:
For new user;
1. download one of the partition files, if you don't know which one you need, use the 250M one or check with rom developer.
2. Extract downloaded zip to a folder of your choice
3. Copy contents of copy_to_sd_root (initrd.gz and zImage) to the root of your sd card
4. boot into magldr and select USB Flasher option while phone is connected to PC
5. Run DAF.exe included in the zip and follow onscreen instructions.
6. After complete, again boot into magldr and select "Boot AD SD" option
7. ClockworkMod recovery should load, you can flash a rom from here.

Inside CWM, do a Nandroid backup and you're good.
Oh and Titanium backup works very well, you probably just don't know how to use it properly. Also, not all settings can be easily recovered among different ROMs, because, you know, the ROMs are different.
I haven't got time to follow every single [Tutorial] thread in here,
so don't know if there is a solution to back-up everything into 1 file (similar to *.ghost back-up file in Window).
Thus, +1 with the demand of WarLockW above

Imagine a backup inside of MAGLDR. That would be great. I want to try different ROM's but like you, find CWM too confusing. Even if I do back up a ROM using CWM where does it save? Yeah, I don't really see any tool backing up a future or old ROM, cause you know, that's not possible. Nandroid is really just 1 thing, and it always works.
1. download one of the partition files, if you don't know which one you need, use the 250M one or check with rom developer.

Where that goes is explained in step 3. Patience, young padawan. Which one you need is pointed out too: 250M, unless your rom dev told you to do otherwise. Having problems reading?
Why you need it? Because it's a necessary file, obviously. If you wouldn't need it, you wouldn't have to download it. I don't think you're after some technical in-depth analysis either, so just do as you're told. Easy, right?
2. Extract downloaded zip to a folder of your choice
3. Copy contents of copy_to_sd_root (initrd.gz and zImage) to the root of your sd card
4. boot into magldr and select USB Flasher option while phone is connected to PC

Surprisingly, DAF.exe is in the zip file you just downloaded. Why do you need to do it? You're installing something here ffs, do you expect to magically install CWM without doing anything?
Yes it does, that's also mentioned in the thread.

Which menu's? Boot AD SD is indeed in the Magldr menu, flashing a zip is indeed in the CWM menu's. Yes, it's in a submenu.

Arabic Support Update.

Hi to All.
I am new to Driod and this forum as well,
I bought Atrix From BELL.
So far I have flashed the ROM to the New OLYEM_U4_1.4.2 Telstra.
Rooted and Deoxed as well, I even got a Custom theme on it.
In short my story, I tried using the Arabic "Framework.jar" that is posted on one of the Dev-Forum on this site. My phone soft bricks.
Is there a better way to update the file. Or the file is just not compatible
What i have tried.
1 - Reflash > rooted > Deoxed > Arabic suport = Bricked ?
2 - Reflash > rooted > Arabic supprot = Bricked ?
Thank you
Anything
Yes, Please attache your original "Framework.jar" file for me.

Should the permissions be:
rw-r-r ,,,
in CLI:
chmod 4644 /system/framework/framework.jar
and should i do it ADB or just file expert.
Thank you for your great work.

Even though I forgot to change permissions once and it wasn't not anything severe like a soft brick, the fix just did not work until I modded the permissions and restarted.
gold luck.

Red Light Blinking, Soft Brick
I made sure the extensions were set RW-R-R . but I guess this Firmware does not like it.
I guess this is a sign to stop using this Arabic support.

Deoxed.
I know i have Root, I have Titanium Backup and Terminal. Everything is was fine.
Could Did your new framework.jar work ??
PS:
Under windows ADB connects but cant get root access for some reason ?
Can you wait for few days. I promise i will make it work for you and i am trying to get the browser too. So if not today wait till tomorrow and it will work. If you reflash your device do not install anything just keep it Deoxed and rooted. So if we have any problem you do not lose your files.

[SOLVED] Need help with bootanimation.

Hey fellow members of XDA!
If you didn't know, right now while I am posting this it is 3:07AM where I live.
Heres my story, ever since I got my first Android device I've been wanting to contribute to the comunity, but I haven't been able to figure out where to learn how to create ROM's. But today I thought to myself, why dont I just make some boot animations and themes? Because I have been animating through C4D for a while now. But enough with my life story, that will be on the thread for the boot animation.
I have been working on this bootanimation since 9:30, I have rendered it out about 7 different times through Cinema 4D, so I could get just the perfect quality/size ratio. The thing is, I've gotten that down. I have the bootanimation.zip perfectly finished and ready to go, the problem I'm having is that I wanted to make it flashable, and if you read that bit up at the top you would know, I dont have much experience with scripts, so I went online and searched up how to make one and looked through ROM's to see what their updater-script looked like, and I thought I had it down, but everytime I go to flash it, it goes like this,
Code:
]-- Install /sdcard/AFAinHD.zip ...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
* Verifying filesystems...
* Verifying partition systems...
Error flashing zip '/sdcard/AFAinHD.zip'
I'm sorry to be posting this here asking for your guys help, but I have no idea what to do here, I want to release this bootanimation to you guys, but I want to make it simple and easy to install also.
Any help will be greatly appricated.
*The flashable zip has been attached below for you guys to look at*

**Due to the time I have posted this thread if little to no replies are given I will bump this thread later in the day, Thank You**
Well...you missed out the crucial line below "error flashing xxx"...you should see something like a status ? (number) error...if you can tell me that, the maybe I can help you solve your problem......good job in making the bootanimation...
See, now thats one of things I was thinking about, there is no error code. I've tried flashing with both CWM and TWRP, but both fail without providing a reason.
Ok...let me take a look at the zip first...
EDIT: what a large bootanimation! XD...usually they are around 4MB...you don't really need your pictures to be that large, but just edit the dimensions in desc.txt...your device will rescale it for you......but nehmimd, let me complete my download first...slow connection here...

Lol the size isn't under my control, Cinema 4D says what size its gonna be and if you say differently your picture is gonna look terrible, the size is definatly worth the look though, it looks amazing when it starts.
Ok...took a look and found the problem...I am not sure where you got the idea of making flashable zips but your directory structure is totally wrong...cause if you are making one for cwm, it should be something else...let me attach a sample for you ok? Uploading now (this is a dummy zip, contains nothing, only folders)...

*Points finger at only result from google on how to compline an updater-script for a bootanimation* --> http://androidarea51.com/modifications/%28how-to%29-make-a-flashable-update-zip/
I have never made an updater-script before, or any time of script, I have no idea what I'm doing with them, I would love to know where you learned to make them.
[EDIT] Just looked at your post again, yea my directory structure, that i just winged that... Couldn't find anywhere to tell me how the hell to do that.
The guide is correct but you kinda got it wrong...lookie here:
http://www.androidfilehost.com/Ryuinferno/Sample.zip
By the way, you must replace the update-binary with a working one for Nexus 7 (just extract it from any cwm zip for Nexus 7)...and place your bootanimation.zip in media folder...cause that's usually where custom bootanimations are placed...rezip everything and flash again...
Dead link 404 error
[EDIT] Nevermind i went ahead and typed it in and it worked, let me try to complile one right now and make it into a .zip, brb.
Lol...wait a min...

Man, I just cannot get this to work, could you link me to a updater-script that you think would work? Also what is the update-binary file for that I keep seeing in other flashables?
[EDIT] Just tried flashing it again, didnt work, still no error code...I dont understand this...
There's nothing wrong with the updater-script...except if your tab does not have busybox...then it won't work...the update binary is device specific...think of it like something to tell your recovery what to do...so you should find one meant for Nexus 7 to replace mine...
Gonna give it another try, just pulled the update-binary from stock 4.1.2 rom
Well, we are making progress, error 6, .
[Just read that its an encoding error, so I went back into my updater-script and re-saved reziped, still getting the damn error, Im going to try a different binary....]
[[Just tried a different binary, here I'm gonna link my new build, tell me what noob mistake i made this time...]]
http://www.mediafire.com/?j1w0xp12qbt25jv
Well I'm going to bed, but for u guys that will still try to help through the night here is what I have done so far, I tried three different binaries, one from stock 4.1.2 one from smoothrom v3.1 and one from a theme, and I rewrote my updater_script by scratch, and no luck was gained from any of it, I just keep getting a error 6. So the download in the last post is still valid you can still look at it if you want to try and help thank you.

Okay, so, the flash was a sucess, but it just kinda replaced the bootanimation with a black screen that overlayed the os, so I just reflashed my ROM, were making progress, almost there...
Actually I think you have the EOL (end of line) error...you must use unix format for EOL in updater-script...
And for bootanimation.zip...the compression level must be set as "store"...

[Q] About customizing roms...

I dont have a PC so i've added files to the CM13 rom with ZArchiver. Is it still flashable?
Will it break everything or it will just refuse to flash?
I've added files to app, priv-app, permissions and framework.
I cant try on my HD2, bc usb is broken and doesnt have magdlr.

try it and see. if putting apks in /system/app or /system/priv-app, they need to be in their own folder I think.
backup first though.

Can i post a link to XDA for somebody to try it?
Or that would be a kind of a douchebag move?
My HD2 is zombie-ish right now. I gotta buy a new motherboard... I found out that the broken USB ripped a part of it, and now there is no way to fix it, ever, bc there is literally a hole in the motherboard.
I went to a service and they told me that. They were able to reattach the charging pins, but not the PC connection pin.
I suppose it depends on what apks you are trying to add, whether it would be allowed to be posted here. some apps are copyright protected.
what exactly are you trying to do?

Stock 5.1.1 Sense 7 on my One M9.
Stock WM6.5 on my HD2.
Why does that matter tho? .-.
Is there any way to put MAGDLR on HD2 without a PC?
Anyway, just asked if adding a few apks to a rom (just adding files to a zip with ZArchiver) will break the flashing script or whatever. Like it will make it unusable. Or i dunno, make the phone bootloop or something...
I will not upload any link. Not gonna waste people's time with stuff that doesnt work.
Also, how do you delete a thread. I will like to delete this one.

It matters because cm13 on hd2 will not boot from wm6.5 because it uses 3.0.x kernel.
see this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=949671 for installing magldr from sdcard, not tried it myself.
You should be able to add stuff to the cm13 rom, it installs to sdcard partitions, worst result is it wont boot.
You can use the report button (triangle) and ask a friendly Mod to delete this thread at their discretion. Please tell us how you get on first though.

Awesome! Thanks for the help!
If the worst result is not booting, is totally fine.
About MAGDLR, i would just buy another HTC HD2 and replace the motherboard.
