Root without unlock? - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any way to root the n10 without unlocking? I've read so many threads about people having a bunch of problems when they root so I thought I'd just root first and see how it goes!
Is this possible?

All of the current root procedures require you to unlock your bootloader first in order to work properly.

Actually I already did it like this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2003938
Works a treat, all my data and apps are all still there!
I'm happy with stock (for now) so I don't want to unlock the bootloader and wipe everything!

Glad you got it rooted, for future reference if you want to fully backup your tablet including your apps and data without needing root access I would recommend using ADB's built in backup and restore feature. I would recommend taking a look at this guide on how to use ADB's backup and restore feature if you are interested.

[Q] No-loss root found, testers needed

Followup to this msg: We have enough volunteers. I just need to work thru some issues with jcase before we start testing. Please be patient.
Good news everyone...
About 8 days ago I rooted my TB -without-losing-ANYTHING-.
I'd like to get a few volunteers to try the procedure before I make it public...
Anyone with an UN-rooted phone who's willing to be a guinea pig, please PM me. Ideal volunteers would be moderately tech-savvy and not have anything on their phone that would be catastrophic if it were lost.
You'd also be a good candidate to help getting this procedure worked out if you just want to root your phone and don't care if you lose anything...
If you're wondering why I don't just post it, I had several false starts (kept getting interrupted because I didn't allow enough time) and then didn't take detailed notes on the final run where I managed to finish it. I want the instructions to be fairly solid before I throw anyone with critical phone data into the procedure.
I hope you understand and will be patient while I get this properly documented...

The current root removes all of your data, he's saying he found a way to do it and not lose any data.

Yes....but he's looking for testers who possibly won't lose any data, apps, etc., by going to root from stock.
We have root, but any process, automated or manual...will put the phone back to 100% stock and remove any and all user info.

We have root but the current method wipes the data. He has found a way to root without losing data. That's the way I took it.
Edit: both of you beat me to it lol

No offense to the OP but once you flash another rom you WILL have to wipe...
Now if its a one click type of root then that's a breakthrough
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
I see the value in this. Some people may just wanna root their TB but not want to install custom ROM. Or they may want to root to see what they can do with a rooted phone.
Thanks for your work but too bad I've already rooted mine.
I'm willing to try it

Not a one-click (I wish...).
If this works for the volunteers, the part in your msg about "... WILL have to wipe." may be obsolete info...

I think we have enough volunteers at this time. Thanks.
I'm working with jcase (who may have a missing piece of the puzzle for a no-loss variant that would take MUCH less time to run). I'll keep you informed as this progresses...

I'm in that boat.. I want root, but not really interested in other ROMs at this time. I went down that road wit hmy X and my Xoom, and its a pain, especially wit hthe Xoom and the move from 3.01 to 3.1 and now 3.2.
I guess one main question is if you root the TB, does it hack the hotspot as well, or would i still need to go get Wireless Tether?
jwb
This would be extremely useful...don't listen to the naysayers.
For those of us who waited to root a week, two, or even a month or two after getting the phone, there was no way to make a solid backup of apps, settings, etc. since most of the better methods require root. So many things had to be wiped clean completely. With a no-wipe root, whether you move onto ROMs or not, you have the opportunity to take a nandroid, use Titanium Backup, etc.
I can't donate my time or phone since I'm busy at work and need a strong daily driver, but I wish you luck.
I just rooted my phone yesterday. I would have liked to try it out and be part of the breathrough.

Sorry... Unfortunately, it's not any easier. It's an add-on to jcase's root method so it still uses adb. It actually takes about 3 times as much time as his, but most of that time is waiting for backup and restore operations to complete.
Very glad to hear development is still ongoing for root! I like this! I hope it works out well. I'd volunteer but I'm past that point. I ran my dInc stock rooted for a pretty long time before trying a custom ROM. This makes a lot of sense to me.
I'll be watching this. My wife won't let me root her TB because she doesn't want to redo her settings.

I advise against using this backup method, taking a DD of /data while its r/w can lead to corruption.
A better idea would be to push su (aka a temp root) into your path and use something like titanium backup to backup you data.

Want to migrate from 8GB to 16GB version - pls help

Thanks for any help in advance.
I have an 8GB Nexus that I've used for a while so it's pretty 'customized' with apps and settings.
I'm going to get a 16GB and want to migrate to that.
What's the best way? Currently the 8GB is not rooted.
Should I use the Toolkit to make a nandroid, can you even do that non-rooted?
Also is there a way to root the new 16GB and then migrate the 8GB system and have root 'stick'? (I want to try out Stickman for flash drives).
Thanks for any tips or hints.
You could do two things.
a) You could do some backups with wugfresh's toolkit like a nandroid, or if you don't want to root it, an app backup (APN)
b) You could root, get titanium backup and upload your backups to your drop box and restore from your 16g.
Good luck!

Thanks for the response. I'm happy to root, I just thought it was a 'destructive' root. Is there a way to root without destroying my apps / data? (I have had two Epic Samsung phones for Sprint so I'm pretty familiar with rooting, roms etc..)

Doesn't it factory reset when unlocking the bootloader? Unless there is an exploit to root without unlocking bootloader, a nandroid wouldn't be sufficient...

Unlock = Flush
With ADB you can now do a nandroid backup though.

Well, yes you can root without losing your data, but like mat said, unlocking the boot loader wips your data, and you need to do that before you root.

I don't.think you can.. all the adb guides I've seen you need to enable super user, so it looks like the only way to take a backup/retrieve a /system.img or data.img is to have superuser/custom recovery installed...

I guess I have learned a lesson from this. Root every device day 1 if possible even if you aren't going to do a custom recovery or rom yet. ha.
That's what I learnt from my one x, I waited a week to see if there were any faults with it... Set it up how I wanted then OEM unlock and didn't know it factory resets, so didn't know I would have to start again...
Could something like voodoo ota root keep help? If someone was to upload the specific "root file"... Not sure how it works myself...

Download and use appbak, upload it to your dropbox.
Load it on the new tab, download the file, and restore apps.
You will need to setup everything manually.
Guys thanks for all your help. It sounds like I'll at least be able to backup user installed apps and data which I guess will suffice. I've learned my lesson. ha.

My Nexus 4 is on the way. Please guide the newbie :D

This is be the first time for me to use a high end smartphone.
May I know what are the things I should do with my new baby?
Things like Dos and Donts before anything bad happen. A list of must have useful apps and description will be much appreciated.
Thanks!
PS. I heard Titanium backup is best to keep your phone safe. Any comments?

Do NOT FLASH any Nexus 7 kernel into your Nexus 4. One fella here already bricked a NEXUS device (Nexus device are very difficult to brick to how open they are).
Other than that, do whatever you want with the phone. It's an Android, and it's a Nexus.

If you're new to the whole android scene....I strongly recommend that you just use the phone as you got it for 2 months FIRST.
While that's going on, read up through the forums, etc.
Just use it as it is first. =)
Id say the first thing you should do is get a case or a back film protector.
Then just read carefully if you want to start flashing. Read read and read again.
First few things to do with your phone
1. Charge it
2. Turn it on
3. Set up
4. Download apps you might need from play store (this will change over time )
5. Its a phone ffs use it as it is for few weeks. See what you like and what you don't. If you don't like something check if there is an app FIRST that will solve your problem . If you can't find an app think if its worth messing with the phone for one single tweak, unless you have found few things that bug you .
Stock android is nearly perfect and can do most/all of the things for normal user. Even customisation doesn't require root in most cases

Unlock the bootloader before you do anything on the phone. Unlocking it wipes all data, so best to do it when there's nothing on there anyway. Then it leaves you open to easily root in the future.

Sorry but that's not possible. You will need an unlocked bootloader to root.
But it's really easy and with an app like carbon you should be able to back up your stuff before you unlock the bootloader (wich will wipe your nexus)

Well there's not much you can do right now. But make sure you do a nandroid backup after you unlock your bootloader. You could always revert to that and lock the bootloader again if you want to. If you want it to be super easy look into wug's toolkit

Help with rooting for a noob

I am a complete noob to rooting. I got my 16GB Wifi-Only Nexus 7 at X-Mas, and didnt know you could root things until a few weeks ago. It is my first android device. Can anybody give me a step by step guide to rooting my nexus? I don't know anything, although I've seen these words (rom, flash, fastboot, kernel) thrown around, and I have a general sense of what a rom and a kernel is. I've looked at the advantages of rooting and decided I want to do it, can anybody help? I already have a bunch of stuff on my tablet btw, like a few pictures, some music, a few videos, and a whole bunch of apps also. OH and also, I just got 4.2.2, as I've seen other post's here about trouble with that, or something...
U have to Unlock boot loader first ,it will wipe all ur data then root it
U can easily unlock and root using wugstool kit ..search development thread
There are tons of advantages of rooting
Kernels, custom Roms, use apps that require root etc
Go ahead and root ur device
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
To backup your app data before unlocking I would recommend Carbon Backup. It can backup app data without root (using adb backup). The app is available in the playstore
Sent from my SK17i running Android 4.1.2
There is loads of info here on xda so I would start reading and learning before attempting it. The reason this is suggested so often is because what will happen if you as a total noob do something wrong, miss a step, create a black hole etc etc. You are now still a total noob except now you either have a tablet that wont work/you cant use or a black hole sucking you in to where ever black holes suck people to. You don't want to be relying on someone typing up a step by step get out a black hole of impending doom guide as you are sucked into it now do you.
The point being, learn from the excellent resources placed here. If you want to learn, teach yourself with the help of those resources. The step by step guides are out there, but learn the terminology also.

What are the advantages of doing that? Another question, since I'm pretty sure wugs kit backups the tablet for you, does it backup everything? Pictures, songs, app data, videos?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
It is correct that manually unlocking bootloader by using adb fastboot is easy, I will tell you how to unlock boot loader and root
First of all backup your data
it is simple you copy all the data to your PC and you can do a backup of your apk's by sending them to a Bluetooth device by the help of a app ( Bluetooth file transfer) , you unlock the boot loader and send all apks back either by Bluetooth or by using stick mount when you are rooted , and restore all data,
For rooting I will give you a link to my post for rooting
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38195329
I was also a total beginner in rooting but theses steps are very easy , they look very big but are easy to follow
