What is a sleep of death? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've done searching and didn't find much on the sleep of death. I know this is a recurring problem due to low clock speeds. But I don't know exactly what it does to the device. Does it result in a brick or can you just reboot/pull battery?

I know for sure it happens if clock speeds are too low (it wont happen here) and when you undervolt the frequencies too low lower than stock. And when you wake the device up with the power button to use it, the screen remains black and doesn't wake up. The phone reboots itself. It might brick but I think chances of that happening is slim. That's why you have to make sure you know what you're doing before hand.

usually its not because of low clock speeds, but undervolting can bring it on. its when you turn off your screen and the screen wont turn back on but the device is awake(you can hear yourself turn the volume up or down, alarms still go off, etc). a force reboot brings your phone back.

issue with backlight will charging

I've been noticing it happening more recently. when I connect my phone to my charger my phone tends to wake itself up. I plug my phone in and my phone is off or asleep. after about maybe a minute to 2 minutes the screen will wake up. I look in the options and have the option to keep a light on unchecked. my backlight timeout is set at 30 seconds, yet I've counted over 2 minutes where the light stays on until I manually choose to turn it off.
I don't like leaving the phone screen on because it can damage the screen. I can't quite figure out what could be causing the issue. I've done absolutely no modding to the phone its completely stock. I have got the j16 update but this is a more recent issue I'm experiencing.

Using the Nexus 7 in the dark

I seem to have found a weird problem with my Nexus 7. I can't wake it up in the dark. If i turn on the lights in the room, the nexus will wake up when i hit push the power button. I can recreate the problem in a lighted room but putting my covering up the camera and light senor. If i turn off the "auto-brightness" feature, It works like normal.
Anyone else having a problem using the Nexus 7 in the dark?
Auto brightness is pretty buggy currently.

True that. When I put mine on auto, it just stays at the lowest it can go. Doesn't move no matter what.

Exactly same thing here, or it'll get bright but never go down. Glad I'm not the only one.

I ran into the exact same problem. I wonder if it is just our tablet. Since I was not sure if this is a hardware issue or a software I started a RMA.
was just about to start a new thread asking about this issue...
well, at least it's good to know that I'm not the only one experiencing this defect.
I wonder if this is a hardware or software issue.
I cover up the light sensor and it wakes up like normal and very dim. Remove my hand and it brightens as I would expect.
You may want to check out an app called "Display Brightness" by Big Rubber Pepper. It will also save you battery by allowing you to control your brightness from 1 to 100% with the swipe of your finger with an invisible slider at the very edge of your screen that can be customized for any location.
yeah this bug is annoying me. Hope they fix it soon.

Powers on fine here with auto-brightness in complete darkness. Return it to stock to see if it clears up.
I'm getting this too. Also if I manually do the brightness slider all the way to the bottom the screen goes off.. I thought it was bricked at first then turned the light on and hey presto! I'm running a stock rom but its rooted, deodexed and also running the tablet ui patch (dpi set at default 213).

Just an update... I got the replacement and that Nexus 7 tablet doesn't have the auto-brightness issue so I guess it was a hardware problem and I am glad I did the RMA or else it would have kept bugging me
Also finding the auto brightness to not work right, one of the applications I downloaded showed the sensor bouncing around a lot. I picked up Lux brightness and it seems to do a better job of moderating automatic brightness with the ability to set custom levels based on the ambient light.

No one has screen dimming problem?

I don't know if screen flicker and screen dimming are the same thing but I encounter a similar issue whenever brightness is below 30 percent.... Other than that my Nexus is flawless besides a rare notification freeze

So, if mine is also called a screen flicker, how do I fix it?
When my N7 screen went all black out, I have to use a torch towards my N7 screen sensor to have the screen bright up again

I just got mine yesterday. Not rooted but I noticed if the screen auto turns off....sometimes it is locked up. Hitting the power button won't do a thing. Have you had this problem?

Yes, i have this problem too. Then when I have no torch beside me for the sensor, i would need to press power button for 10sec+ for a reboot. How suck it is. This is the only thing bugging me on N7

I just got off the phone with Google play. Having a new unit sent to me. Glad to hear (unfortunately) you are having similar issues.

So, no one seems to know how to fix, then it's hardware problem and have to send to ASUS?

hey!
if it is the same issue as i have (screen turns off in auto brightness or manually set the brightness to minimum), i dont think it is an hardware issue.
i think the minimum background light is set wrong in the system.
also i dont think it is hardware related, because many other owner af a n7 are reporting this issue.

maybe it helps
testcenter, thanks for the recommanded app, but i not wanna root at this moment.
I guess in the mean time just not using auto brightness and pray for not dim out again

[Q] Has anyone found a PGM replacement?

Hey guys
Long time Galaxy Nexus / Galaxy Note 2 user here.
One of my fave apps was the PGM because it allowed control of the phone without hitting the unlock button to unlock it.
I know the dev (who lives in Poland) hasnt gotten an N4 yet, so he hasnt been able to write the kernel tweak yet.
Anyody found any options?
I have been using the app Sleep Tweak. What it does is if you get a text it wakes the phone but doesn't turn on the screen. If you pick the phone up within X seconds after receiving a text the screen turns on. Same with if the phone times out by itself if you pick it up within X seconds it will turn the screen back on. Not the same I know but it lets me decide whether I want the screen to turn on for a text or something.

No answer for you, but a question..
Wouldn't something like PGM (Nexus) drain the battery? As it would require the screen to be "on" to detect any type of touch from the user?

The battery drain was very minimal on my gnex when i was using it, maybe 5% tops.

No,
Snce it's written into the kernel itself the device still deep sleeps and so the effects on battery are minimal.

I mean, that's not bad at all, but man I wish I had 2 N4's I could ship this guy, so we could finally get that.
No lie, it's the ONE app I NEED on a device

5%? No. It's way less than that. When I use it it feels like it has absolutely no impact on battery life because it's a kernel module.

[Q] Cannot slide to unlock phone when battery is very low?

I have a problem: I cannot slide to unlock the phone when the battery is very low. I have to swipe the widgets page on the lock screen to open an app and then click the back button to get to the main pages. Why is this?
Your battery is low and power saving has kicked in. Recharge the battery.

Can I turn off this power saving feature so I can still use my phone when it's at like 5%? Seems silly I can't actually use the phone other than its widgets until the full duration of the battery is used.

Ok, I just thought that the things listed under there were the only things for Power-Saving and none of them were related to my problem. Thanks.
